You have to look at the fuel ratings. The fuel rated for the Merc in the reference(s) made is NOT sold in Nigeria. Also, you have to be mindful of the units. The American units are smaller and does not attest to the SI measure of unit. That is: miles per gallon does not equate to the standard (S.I) litres per cent kilometres. Some math is needed here. This is just for your cognitive evaluation. 4L per unit consumption is not the same 4L in unit consumption in the United States.

Math-or-no-Math, you won't be getting any of the stated miles per gallon. The figures were generated and has always been lowered as time proceeds. A smaller engine also doesn't guarantee great economy in return. It is a case-by-case use of application, which will differ from person to person. A gas guzzler isn't included in the context used.

Soil-Science is also one of the sectors within oil-and-gas. A strong area/field is pipeline - buried pipeline. The engineering is not as complex. The science is another (whatever your pick is) due to research-and-development. Breaking-in with respect to aforesaid would be "buried pipeline design/engineering." That is if you want to use your educational background. Furthermore, you can't escape soil mechanics. This is elementary, lest you aren't going far. Depending on the company, the use of computational simulations is a must (or will be in the stretch of the career).

The thread [indeed] is a serious topic. Though shallow with little spoken (maybe it's just me expecting valuable points addressed).

I will close-mindedly support the shallow thesis to this thread, due to my perspective and limited topic-information. What the government is doing is good. From comprehension (and I may be wrong), the government is taking steps to "birth" manufacturing (semi or full). The car "thingy" is more of a smokescreen (in terms of deeper intentions) and scape-goat. It is the biggest fish and other sectors follow. There are [full] native born Nigerians that give their "visions" to western corporations and help develop other nations. These people need to be "home." Many Nigerians can't return due to manufacturing-absence. It is a serious problem.

Shame: the average Nigerian is still worried about a consumer product; a product that yield no GDP or eligible for exportation as payment for imports. I don't know what the Nigerian industry was in terms of product manufacturing and how well it was run. That was all in the past. The move stated by the initial poster is one pillar to a strong economy. Nigeria will also be empowered to have its legislative laws that manufacturers must adhere to; if to be sold on Nigerian soil for the Nigerian market. A brief examination of the current cars imported outside of franchise: do they work? It is not fully adapted to the socioeconomically factors presented; beautiful metals as parked-junk becomes the ultimate conclusion for many.

The overall national merit should be looked upon. This is securing to you and your posterity. Worrying about inability to import a "Hemi" is just myopic as far as national interest/s is/are concerned. It's not just you or the current populace but the posterity.

Fair enough! It's very well understood. The technical competence [indeed] is the strong point stated; engine being old isn't. I owned a Volvo and the engine was very strong; same as transmission. No exaggerations! They go strong at high mileages. Nairalanders will be able to recommend a qualified person if you open a thread specifically for this purpose.

I don't mean to "sweat" you or tell you what to do. This is an aspect of CAR-TALK that I avoid because it offers no merits [which-ever-way]. This will be an exception. Why would you jump from a sinking boat to another? Why purchase an engine of questionable integrity at the expense of what you are familiar with? This is rampant on this portal (which is nothing but a reflection of how Nigerians think). Rather than root-solving issues, a complete replacement to questionable dependability is preferred irrespective of the potential risks. Labour is cheap - parts aren't expensive; money spent doesn't matter.

My recommendation to you is to fix what you have and discover why the issues arose in the first place. The vehicle should be given to one who is versed in Volvos. This is the simpler way with the least in the downtime and expenses. To keep it [all] simple, you do not know where the transplant-engine is coming from.

Flyboy Zee: My 2002 Acura TL Type S engine requires a SAE 5W20 graded engine oil. I searched the length and breadth of Naija, but couldn't get the oil, so I had to settle for Total Quartz 9000 graded SAE 5W40. I believe that would also work for you. As for the guy saying Mobil 1 is 5W20, I don't think that's true, Mobil 1 is graded 0W50. See the pictures attached below.

Be sure to update the subscribers here the drained-oil-analysis when you are done with the duration of 40-weight.

It's difficult to answer your question because car manufacturers strive instead to make their cars fuel-economical. However, I can tell you that on an average, Toyota does the better job on fuel economy.

I'm not discrediting but you are slightly off. Toyota does not do a better job on fuel economy; that is advertising rhetoric. Fuel consumption per manufacturer is based on the summation of ALL models (including special purpose models and diesels) and then it is mean[ed] ( averaged). This is the standard for rating combustion consumption. The high performance models and heavy duty models (Toyota) do not reflect the satisfaction gotten from the humble model-lineups. Alone in this grouping category offsets the marketing impression cast. In addition, let no one deceive you [that] they are striving for fuel economy. The dynamics to that is diversely-complex. Nevertheless, an appropriate manufacturer stated would be Volvo. You have mass, an integrated safety cage and a measure of engine performance; yet - litre per cent kilometre is acceptable. Mercedes is remarkable in combustion and none to date has come anywhere close. It's a better all-rounder.

sooper rescue: As an automobile repair practitioner, I will suggest you dont go for brands, just lookout for the tyres suitable for Nigerian roads. For your Suv which brand and model is not stated, Buy any tyre with a V speed rating. Even Starfire, Innoson or Appollo, as long as they are V, then they are suitable for Nigeria. Michelin and Pirelli comes with all season tyres and reduced speed capability. The issue on burst tyres on our roads is mostly caused by fitting tyres that are not suitable for Nigerian roads. The Kogi State Governor's road accident was caused by a burst tyre and when a car gets to a certain speed and the tyre does not support that speed, it either melts or burst while on motion. Most Brands of Mercedes and BMW are fitted with Y, Z or ZR and you will find out that these tyres are not even sold here in Nigeria. My Jeep has W speed rating and they are tokunbo tyres and date of manufacture is 2011. I rather buy used tyres than buy new substandard tyres.

The ratings you refer to is for 20 minutes of kinematic loadings at upper capability (max potential). After 20 minutes (at "combined" maximum speed rating), the tyres are not good for the maximum speed-load listed, then you are looking for trouble. The ratings are based on 20 minutes cyclic loadings. V-R tyres wear out quickly than the H's and I believe this is a determining-factor for many when it comes to making a choice.

You are welcome. Don't be intimidated by PDMS. It's simple. It might deem as complicated but it isn't. Be sure the institution that will offer the training is accredited by AVEVA to administer it. If not you are burning money. When done, re-adjust your resume accordingly.

To answer your question(s):

Foremost: the main thing is breaking-in, afterwards, you can be liberal with your choices.

Nigeria is an oil producing country. Schools for oil-well-completion or trainings for the oil-&-gas industry will definitely abound in Nigeria. Companies don't really train in-house. Sometimes, it is contracted. There are rigs in Nigeria; lots of them. I will find it impossible to believe these don't exist. Your worries shouldn't be: if it's internationally acclaimed but accredited and recognised by the oil companies in Nigeria. Inquiries shouldn't be stereotyped as oil-well-control but trainings for oil-and-gas preparation. Depending on how you want to go about it, it could (and not limited to):
---- Mud and Well logging for drill stem curriculum
---- Instruments and power systems curriculum
---- Drilling curriculum
-------- e.t.c

It is from these types of curriculum that gives you the discernment that entry-trained employees possess. For instance, if you take a drilling curriculum, it will have sub-curriculums within it that includes the introduction to drilling rigs, drilling equipments, drilling fluids, mud circulation, hoisting equipments, pipe handling, casing and cementing. Do your tests and proceed.

If oil-&-gas is not preference, I'd recommend you look at other areas of manufacturing. Some Nigerians on this portal have stressed on Plant Design Management Systems (PDMS). Piping isn't a poor choice; as a matter of fact, it pays handsomely. Whatever choice you make, you must consider the future. With all "globalisation" going on, having a career that could be eroded by this social change is something to put into consideration.

Talk to people. The goal is getting into the workforce. When you are in, you can sort yourself out from there because the dynamics have changed.

I also wanted to state this. This advice is concrete. The dynamics to this/these counsel/s should be understood. It is not the knowledge you are seeking. It is the by-product. It is the discernment that is to be acquired. These trainings change your discernment. With this discernment, you can properly apply knowledge in concept. Overall, the university degree only gave you the platform to comprehend the challenges on a professional level. It did not make you a professional.

You are welcome. I will stress on one misconception Nigerians repeat. The very fact you did Engineering Production does not mean you must work there. The discipline helped you to understand the world from that perspective. I wouldn't be surprised to discover that you may not have heard of a graduate with a Bachelors in Food Engineering (or something like that) working on the oil site (as a drilling engineer) along with engineers who graduated with dedicated degrees. Such [a] person did not struggle but understood what he wanted and broke-in. Your objectives will have to be clear and your goals must be within the parameters of your concluded objectives. I am unaware of what Engineering Production as a university curriculum is. However, I do know where it is and how it functions on the engineering spectrum. There are three approaches you can go about this. That is: design-engineering, engineering-technology or engineering-production. These should be the parameters to which you itemise your objectives. Since you have started and funds is not a problem, you may want to intensify what you've started by going to a Well Control School and start with the fundamentals. You take all the servicing (well service) curriculum (as far as you can go). In other words, this objective is Well Completion (or Drilling and Oil Well Completion). Though, a certificate of completion and professional hours would be earned, this is professional training. This is the same training companies will send their entry-level recruits to attain. Despite university degrees, there are new recruits that still flunk. These are the people that make it difficult for you to get in when you fresh after graduation. Skepticism becomes core-factor when possible potentials are available (as far as employers are concerned). This is greatly exacerbated by the fact that deliberation by a group might have to be part of the process. I'm sure you are aware how expensive these professional trainings are.

Drilling and Oil Well Completion is the only reference I can present to you as a sole objective (from what you have stated). When you're done exploiting the training classes, your resume changes. You'll have something to complement your degree. Your mindset becomes different and you will be able to hold specialised conversation in manners the layman graduate (of same degree) will not be able to understand. If you are good with computer-aided process, don't omit this as well. Getting in is what matters now. Once in, the rest is to you.

Truly, you will have to interface with a person in the real world to get a deeper understanding of what I am talking about. Especially, design-engineering, engineering-technology and production. You aren't anticipating the short-run but the long-run, in the overall plan. If you've gotten this far, the "door" is all that is left. Everyone is trying to get through as well. As you talk to your instructors, they might leak certain things. At this point, you are realising that information isn't coming easy. Everyone is tight about it.

It appears to be the front-left wheel speed control cable and connector for the wheel speed sensor. Why do you want it disconnected? Disconnect the battery and use something logical to clean it and close the connection when appropriate.

I am a graduate from production engineering(uniben) currently waiting for nysc batch c.I graduated with a 2.2, what are my chances of breaking into the E&P coy.i recently did a short professional course on drilling(Drilling operations & Equipments)which I paid 60k.Right now,i seriously feel that isn't enough as I need other qualifications to boost my chances but the problem is I don't know which certifications to go for.
I vehemently need all the help I can get from you guys in creating a path toward the dream of working in this sector.
The funding isn't the problem here as I can atleast take care of the bill with my HARD grin earn cash in acquiring the certification here in nigeria.

You can break into any industry. The professional course you took may have been introductory. One isn't enough. You also don't want to limit yourself to one area except you are certain the job-demand exist in that area and the competition is somewhat weak. So far, you have started, more might be needed. The goal is to present to employers that you have what it takes to be qualified amongst others. It might sound awkward because further developmental trainings causes a drain to your financial account but it is still considered investment.

I'll be painting the car a unibody paint rather the upper part of all doors adjacent to the windows will be going in matte..plz i need paint colour suggestions not too dark not too light in colour.

I might not be practical on this but it isn't worthless disclosing it. It is true there are essentials owing a Mercedes Benz. These essentials affect long-term ownership (if it'll be short or not).

Fortunately for NL, there are people who make imports. In corroboration, an appeal can be made that will seem enticing. If enough people can commit to suggest and attest to pay, a market then has been produced. It will start as a thread. Interested people will include their input as a pledge of interest. Parts like plugs, lubrication (all or certain genres), carbon-controlled additives (Techron) and so on can be petitioned. The higher the numbers of committed numbers, the easier these "dealers" will embrace the provocation.

The ingredients for such petitions are available. There is a forum (which is NL), there are two related portals (Car-Talk and Auto). All that is left is the awareness.

This has been my thoughts.

Moving on, my smartkey cant open the door from the driver side except in cold weather, especially when it rains. Overall, I can't even open/lock the doors from a distance, only at close distance that's when standing by the car.

In response to your proposal, the best I have done is to make the awareness open. This has been from my very post in this thread. My firm belief has been the importers (car importers) from the Auto-Forum be made aware of a possible market that lies unrecognised. The [subframe] mounts will have to be replaced. Rubber would have disintegrated by now. The difference will be [very] tremendous. I can't give a finite answer on the second question because I'm just being aware that there was a facelift model. Europe had the diverse models. The United States did not. If it is a direct bolt-on with no hard-install, then it serves to be aesthetic. No problem with that.

For the trims, just leave it alone. You aren't pimping-the-ride. You are restoring. Except you replace it. Anything you do will yield little results thereafter. Except you replace it. It isn't obvious - plus nobody cares.

Oh! I know what you are talking about. It's purely aesthetic. I believe you are referring to the visual stylings like the 90's Series E (94/95 E Class) lower door pads. If it fits, then its fine. If you have to drill, beat and re-work, it's really not worth it. It doesn't diminish it from being what it truly is. RE: bumpers - if it fits, that will not be a problem. You aren't messing with anything. The bottom of the vehicle was carefully designed to stream air without the anomalies experienced by vehicles of those generations. The location of the exhaust was also a design consideration and the air around it carefully tailored. When you go AMG or the rest, the variables change. The air going through it (at the bottom) becomes faster - thus hotter - because they have to squeeze through, then pressure drop occurs. The affect ([a]ffect) to this is higher road-hold-ability and stability. Where the possible risk is [is] the case where it is not properly tailored (for the smooth streamflow). The air-stream is questionable and improper evacuation occurs. Then you have a problem at high speed. Those bumpers and skirts are colloquially called "aerodynamic add-ons" because they affect aerodynamics. There is nothing wrong with getting trusted bumpers and skirts; getting aftermarkets is where the skepticism arises. There are very few wind-tunnels in the world. One at the major university in the United Kingdom, Saab, Honda, Mercedes and a few others have this facility. To accept in faith that it was tested through a wind tunnel is slim.

SmartChoice, it doesn't feel right. This thread was the very reason I remained in NL. I spoke with certainty because I had factory information to back it up and years on MB. This is because, due to experiences, working wide from specifications shorten the span of these vehicles and the possibilities of needless repairs. I didn't have the conscience to read what I saw and mind my business. I didn't expect to be received well, nevertheless I did. I had to seek time to follow-up on support because I'm not a "connected" person. I don't have an online life (except NL). The basic rule (that I have stressed) is to stick to specifications and keep the rest of the money in your pocket. I stressed on the two key-things that causes engine failures in MB's. Time was taken to explain. Sincerely, I never play on intelligence; despite the fact I know how Nigerians behave. These cars are not expensive in milestone up-keeps if you follow specifications thoroughly. Parts might be expensive but don't fail as often. Recommendations are not illegal but you recommend with a disclaimer when you are going off-specs. At least imply it in your context. I've recommended out of specs once or twice: one out of ignorance: the second out of my practice (this I implied a disclaimer). To recommend something and it cost the owner in the long-run is not right. I respect everyone; they might not understand. Ever wondered why there are so many engine swaps and transmission replacements (especially on MB's)? Ever wonder the ECU swapping? Is it normal? These are costly procedures and the probability for the service to be done badly is high. Addressing and preventing issues from the roots is save you time and leave your bank account undrained. I get insulted and another implies troublemaking proceeding it.

Sorry for not making myself clear. Also, my mistake on the mirror with the metal backing. The 190's don't have that. Forget about the anodised aluminiums. It wouldn't matter to you. However, what I meant originally was getting the trim back to newish appearance. The 190 isn't that embellished.

That is the sub-frame. The associated mount to it is at the bottom. Altogether, you should have four subframe mounts for the fore and rear.

I realised that I omitted seals. I meant the doors, trunk, hood and other areas of similar application.

I had a reason for asking the question on engine oil. Someone advertised a "synthetic" oil that could rival Mobil 1 for less about 40% of the latter. I believe if there is an alternative oil of same manufacturers specifications as this, its not an offence to try it out.

The name of the said oil is - Somotek - or something.

Pls Trac, au.hanson, lets help the thread and not destroy what we've built.

Because of a fair original statement --- This is not how a thread is to be. One has become territorial of the thread. I deliberately avoid this. Search earlier and see how I dominated the thread at one point. I intentionally avoided the thread afterwards to avoid dependency and recognition. It's also why I don't make posts in this thread. My philosophy is to make people be on their own and self-sufficient. Please, don't get me wrong on this. I'm making no accusations.

It will be useless without the accredited training. It's a guarantee. It'll be remote.

After training, it becomes clearer. Especially certain pipe layouts, interdisciplinary layouts and attribute manipulation in equipment design. There are specific precautions only unique to Aveva. There are certain key-points only the instructor will pass along that the Aveva course note does not disclose.

I'd advise anyone trying to get into the oil sector to make out a clear objective and optimise that. Many are not fit candidates. Yet they have degrees. This clouds the demarcation to differentiate those truly fit from the misfits. Companies - in today's times - do not want to pay for the training and then conclude it as a total loss, because the trained employee fails to meet job criterion/a.

Typical training cost about $30,000 (more or less). The money may not be the factor of annoyance but the downtime.

How do you prove yourself? A graduating set is at equality in terms of academic knowledge, thus degree is issued. What differentiates an alumnus from the other is the experience and concerned continuous-studies. In other words, meet the companies half-way. Spend some money and acquire some skills and certification(s). Your intellectual knowledge at this point is put to test. It might be a bit late for some people but it isn't. Those [still] in school should see to it that they acquire as much (much as in quality) as they can.

Mechanical-Engineers are decentralised. They are more diversed. Industrial/Manufacturing are the most flexible and needed. Petroleum is very restrictive because it is a dedicated and applied form of mechanical engineering. Nevertheless, the ground is still common.

What skills are many presenting to the oil companies to differentiate from others? The approach should be to eliminate or minimise the competition for consideration.

For Business oriented graduates or undergrads, there are lots of areas that makes you economically valuable.


No doubt: I am discussing with reasonable people here. The summary is to prove that you are of economical value to the proposed company and worth the investment.

The Bumpers and Side skirts you're mentioning are really very expensive items and you might end up having to source from ebay or dedicated w201 enthusiast forums...and even at that the only relatively cheaper ones (fiberglass replicas) might be within you budget.

Take it step by step and you wont be overwhelmed.

True, the parts are expensive (about $1100 or so for the bumpers alone and misc. not considered). Not because of the brand but the purpose to it. It takes a lot to bring to creation from the sketch pad (research to production). In addition to the parts being expensive, there are not many in the manufacturer's stock. There weren't many to begin with. If I am not wrong, there are in the hundreds or in the very low thousands.

Again, it's not cosmetic. I'd say it is of very low to no priority.

Vulcanisation is adding properties to rubber to attain an objective it primary cannot sustain in its natural state. In this, I meant bushings, mounts, etc. The mounts at the frame will have to be completely replaced. Never use an American part.

The anodized trims are referenced. When oxidized, it is appears faded or tarnished.

The moldings I referred to are the skirts and the bumpers you emphases on. The reason I expressed my concern was the sole reason of purpose; which is an engineering function. To which risk you open yourself to if certain precautions are not considered. I’ll elaborate. It has a lot to do with vehicle stability for adhesion. This is by virtue of the flow of fluid (that is air) under the vehicle. The engineering purpose of the skirts and bumper is to increase fluid velocity for the sole purpose of dropping the pressure underneath. There is also a drawback, more power is needed to propel the vehicle due to drag. This is not noticeable; except extremes. The area of concern is the purpose integrity of the skirts and bumpers. How is the fluid channeled? Especially at high speed! It is a tailored concept. If constructed without the applicable engineering laws to it (which many in the market are), you’ll experience questionable stability at high speed. Such modification is considered tuning. You changing the handling of the car dynamically. It’s considered Stage III tuning under Mercedes classification. Carves and indentations (or what can be visually considered pattern) on the bumpers and skirts are not aesthetics. They serve engineering functions. However, AMG, Cosworth and Lorinser parts can be used. There are no worries there. There are other reputable brands but should be investigated with skepticism. They’d be German (I suppose).

The mirrors are cheesy. I’m unsure if the McLauren inspired the exterior appearance of the gold-colored example. It has a McLauren exterior color and mirrors that emulates it (which appears plastic). I’ll stick to the quality mirror that came with the vehicle and its anodized rear.

I'm not making light the references given to you (that is Frando, Honharr etc). If the product Honda specifies cannot be gotten from their references, import as you have stated. Don't fall for any superior product if unapproved by Honda. Honda is unforgiving in their transmission systems and the track record proves it. Use the recommended product. Also, there are Honda dealerships in Nigeria.
