I tell you. Over 40 students died yesterday and focus is all on elections. No compassion or value for human life. |
Why can't this money be invested in Nigeria 's media instead of CNN. Waste of money which can be used to improve the health and education sectors. http://www.thecable.ng/2015-cnn-rejects-political-adverts-nigeria |
What a dumb statement. So everyone has the right to enter a country and do whatever they want? Sorry the uk is not Nigeria where anything goes. where your ass is licked and you are above the law because you are a pastor Orunto: |
Interesting thread, but people saying where is Dubai and Saudi Arabia, from a global tourism perspective they are not in the top 10. Saudi Arabia has about 3.7m visitors for hajj every year so def not up to top Dubai definitely has a growing tourism industry, and for Nigerians it's a popular destination due to the ease of getting a visa, but from a global perspective dubai is not top 10. Global tourism is driven by the Chinese, Europeans etc and I would say countries outside the usual suspects of western countries, Asian countries like Thailand attract far higher numbers than dubai. In fact dubai had roughly 10 million visitors last year while Thailand had over 26 million. |
This is not trash. I attended Corona in the early 80s when there were quite a few British teachers and I remember the bead when I started was white as well. So there are some people who will have adopted such accents from such a foundation. This has probably changed now. This is not saying there are lots of people faking accents. shedraq1: |
The reason he came out is because there has been so much speculation about his sexuality and as he said he has always been private about his life but with all the speculation he had to announce. Also being gay is being a minority so you can't compare it to husband and, wufe who have no need to announce salt1: |
I'm sorry but this statement smacks of ignorance. Being gay doesn't mean you go around sleeping with everyone as you all seem to think. You have gay people in committed relationships same as straight people, and you have gay people who are promiscuous same as straight people, but you will not see gay people trying to.sleep with straight people and have a harrasing them like you make it sound. Pure ignorance. To me homopobia is discrimination, same as you all face discrimination in all facets in Nigeria e.g. based on age for jobs, based on tribe, based on religion etc Live and let live. I am not gay but I have worked with gay people in my project teams here in the UK and NO they have not tried sticking it in my ass the way u all like to paint it. We work as colleagues with mutual respect and I go home to my wife and do what I want, they go home to their partners and do what they want. Shikena. Godson32: |

Blah blah blah... as usual nigerians always blaming enemies. If not one witch in village, it's evil spirit, or America and now reuters. You are a gullible bunch of people who support mediocrity for your selfish reasons so the article is totally right. In a civilised society all the rubbish your politicians do will not be tolerated but nigerians don't even know what it means to have a good government anymore. It's all about me me me. How can you have a government that cannot be held to account? Anyway You deserve that government you get. Goodluck "giant of Africa" ratiken: |
Whilst I understand the reason behind your statement and in some way I feel the same, I am really scared of this prayer coming to pass cus the effects will be felt.more by the ordinary nigerians on the street. The politicians have stolen billions already and will continue which means less money for the citizens. All their children study abroad, they travel abroad for health issues etc. It's the man on the street who will suffer and that hurts PassingShot: |
This must be the most ridiculous statement I've read on nairaland. Sorry to tell you but you seem to have a larger than life impression of Nigeria ad a country the whole world is scheming against. Saying oil prices goes down cus of Nigeria having good leadership is utter bullocks and so ignorant. All the opec countries and non opec oil producing countries like Denmark, Norway etc are all scheming with America to reduce oil prices cus of nigeria... wow The recent fall in prices is due to America now producing enough oil to be a net exporter of oil. Unlike your great Nigeria who has remained an importer of refined oil despite all your resources. Oh wait it's Obama and cia who make sure Nigeria haven't developed refineries and oh it's Clunton who fostered corruption in the oil sector, and it def was bush who cursed Nigeria with the Dutch disease (look it up on Google if you don't know what it means) As usual nigerians spend their time finding excuses for mediocrity instead of demanding service from their leaders. You spoke about America using loans to control Nigeria. Is this the same western countries that forgave your debt a few years ago? Was it Obama that put a gun on your head to force Nigeria to borrow? And if the loans are being used for development of infrastructure then I don't see any problems, but typical Nigerian government will steal most of it till you end up owing a large sum with no assets to back it up. Look Nigeria has the potential to be a great nation that provides a good life for its citizens, but it in your hands so stop looking for excuses and conspiracy theories to defend the myriad of issues facing the country. Roll up your sleeves and work hard to move the nation forward as one, eradicate corruption, stop defending bad leaders. Fix your education sector, health sector, power sector as these impact the lives of the average Nigerian and diversify the economy. Look at Norway as an example. Excuse the typos. chloride6:For real? So insensitive |
Lexusgs430:My bad. Then that's ok. No risk if unexpected charges if you go over |
Lexusgs430:One other thing to be aware of is 1gb of data is not as much as it sounds and the cost of using above your alloted 1gb will be high. If not careful you can easily end up with monthly bills of £60ish Gone are the days when unlimited minutes were a big deal. It's all about data now. |
Nice write up JB And interesting perspective from MadCow (can't help feeling like I am insulting you writing your username lol) I think it's important to know who you are and what you want out of life, and also where you have opportunities. I know people who prefer life in Nigeria and have good opportunities there and that works, and those who prefer life abroad and feel they have more opportunities there and that works as well. |
atbu1983:yes countries like Qatar and Luxembourg have a larger GDP per capita than America but i would rather live in America than luxemourgh due to the better standard of living and opportunities. If I was a member of a royal or important family in Qatar then I would be happy there but as a common man on the street, the GDP per capita is skewed towards the few who control the resources and will not benefit me much compared to Amerca. |
ducii:Simply google China' debt and the information is there. China has built a massive debt pile to push through rapid investment in the country over the past few years, and most of the debt is held at the local government level and not federal which is why you may not see it depending on which numbers you look at. China funded massive investments in real estate and infrastructure to grow their economy and if you research online, you will see cases of ghost towns all around as a result of excess investment. This was possible because the government controls the banks - note this is different from a bail-out. In simple terms what they did was use the banks to fund investment and thereby boost production and employment. Problem with this is sustainability. The economy needs to go through a correction to stabilise and it may be a painful correction due to the debt pile and property bubble. After all the investment in properties, prices have been falling leaving the banks with lots of bad debt, but given they are controlled by the government, they are not recognised as bad debt like in America which operates a near free market system. In pure accounting terms they have a shitload of debt. Regariding China holding the bulk of America bonds, that doesn't say much because America has loads of assets as well (holding debt of other countries) despite their debt. Having debt doesnt mean you have no asset. In my opinion I actually see it as the Chinese government hedging their economy against the US economy which they know to be a stronger and more sustainable economy. e.g. If Dangote Industries is owing GTB N1bn, that doesn't mean they don't have the assets to back it up. I must say though at some point America may need to look at their role as saviour of the world cus all the incessant wars are taking a toll on their finances and the main reason for the massive debt they have. |
No money to pay teachers but ebola billions diverted to buy "cars" |
China’s economy is not as healthy as they will like you to believe. And the difference with the us economy is America is a consumer based economy with strong capitalist characteristics while China is predominantly government funded which is not sustainable. Burgeoning local government debt is a cancerous tumour weighing down the health of the Chinese economy, and figuring out how to manage the growing burden is one of the biggest challenges facing Beijing. The State Council, the Chinese cabinet, last week issued a comprehensive set of directives designed to improve transparency, clarify the responsibility of debtors and put a lid on the overall size of the debt during the National Day holiday. Before examining Beijing’s effort to rein in its debt problem, it is useful to remind ourselves just how bad the situation is. The collective debt of local government soared nearly 3.9 trillion yuan, or $720bn, to 10.6 trillion by June 2013, according to the last comprehensive survey by China’s National Audit Office. |
podosci:Firstly gdp per capita is a better measure than gdp based on ppp. It means 300 million people generated same output as 1.3 billion people. Secondly, don't be deceived by the fact China holds the bulk of America's debt. It's because they are hedging their economy against the usa - beneficial to both countries. China has a massive debt problem which they are gripping with and the economy will undergo a massive correction over the next few years which may be painful. |

Also note, China's gross domestic product bigger than USA in only one indicator based on a method of calculation by the IMF which can be said to be flawed - by adjusting GDP for China's relatively low cost of living, compared with USA's higher cot of living. On the face of it you may say China is cheaper so better, but no America has a higher standard of living and workers earn more. Also on a GDP per person perspective which to me is far important, $58,000 to $6,000, I don't care how much China's gdp is, USA is a far superior and better economy. China has 1 billion more people than USA so they have a long way to go. Also there is lots of talk about USA's debt, but China has a lot of debt and the way they account for debt doesn't give the true picture. Most of the Chinese boom was funded by state backed bank's which means the debt is all internal and not exactly transparent for accounting. |
China is facing years of slowing economic growth and is struggling to contain a property bubble due to government intervention in the market over the past few years. In absolutely gdp terms China may be slightly ahead now but the USA has a superior and more sustainable economy. Gdp per person is a good example with China having over a billion people. China is now trying to transform it's economy into a consumer based economy like the USA cus that is the sustainable model rather than a government based economy. Also from a debt perspective China has a lot of debt but the way it is structured it doesn't show like America e.g. China has funded it's boom over the past few years via banks backed by the government pretty much the debt is internal compared to external like the USA. I commend China for their economic growth and achievement but USA it is not. |
While PapiWata's post is a bit harsh given the guy is dead, I share the sentiments as he should not have travelled. Same with sawyer who travelled to Nigeria despite his sister who he lives with having just died from Ebola. More annoyingly about Eric Duncan case is his family were quarantined to avoid spreading the virus if infected, and 4 of them had the guts to leave the flat which resulted in a court order and armed police watching over them. Why in hell would you decide to leave the house given the situation with Eric? |
gbadexy:I'm sorry but this sounds a bit ignorant. America said it over and over again that zmapp was an experimental drug which is still in development and under testing on animals. You Nigeria crucified America claiming they hated you that's why they didn't give you. Now you say it was a fluke. Nigeria was lucky in containing ebola thanks to the sacrifice of the Dr who died and hard work to contain the spread. I still maintain though that we are not out of the woods as it can always easily come back. Imagine how easy it is for someone with ebola who is not yet showing symptoms to come in through land borders. Sawyer came via Lagos airport which made it a bit easier. If say he drove in though land border or somewhere more remote it would have been a different story. Moral of my story Nigeria should not rest in her oars but should continue to invest in preparation for future situations and also in research. We keep blaming the white man for this and that but what is stopping us taking control of our future and doing something about bit rather than waiting for the West to help every time? All the people blaming America for zmapp, remember they only had limited supply which was sent to the worse affected areas and they do not have anymore. |
Austindark:How did they not support you? |
DisGuy:Definitely better than nothing and btw IBM is a good brand, similar to Accenture in my opinion. I assume you are referring to the I.T. Consulting arm. Any experience will make a difference |
See below seo website. I checked and applications are already open. http://www.seo-london.com/apply-now |
dustydee:I second this post. Good list above and as poster said it's very important to start applying now as most companies who sponsor for work visa start their graduate recruitment from about now most close before end of year and offers out by feb. For those going for undergrad degrees, I cannot stress enough the importance of an internship. I thank God I had this information and was able to secure an internship with an investment bank. As they say the rest is history as I got a grad role with another bank after my second year so my final year was spent relaxing in the knowledge I had a job and work permit sorted. After the graduate programmes, I moved across to consulting where I currently work. I will also advice people who are interested I'm business and finance roles to look at seo London. They help people from ethnic minorities to get roles in the city. I was able to get a second internship via seo so they are very good. For those interested in areas like audit or consulting. The big 4 is a good area to look at because they recruit a lot of grads so easily sponsor for work permit. Depending on the school you are attending, you may find it a bit easier applying to regional offices e.g. reading etc as competition for London is high and you are competing with the lse's, imperial etc. Anyway good luck all and always happy to help with any queries. |
I know this thread is old, but I find it interesting that inspirational threads like this which showcase nigerians doing well abroad never get traction on nairaland, but a thread talking about nigerians washing plates abroad will have thousands of comments lol |
The case of sawyer is well document. How he travelled to Nigeria despite the known risk he could have been infected with Ebola given his sister who he lived with recent died from ebola. Now we have Thomas Eric Duncan who travelled to Dallas to visit his sister despite the risk of him being infected given he had contact with a pregnant woman who had ebola and was convulsing when trying to save her. Question is why would they be traveling to other countries knowing the risk they pose? Let's assume it was all innocent, the most annoying part is Duncan family were quarantined given he had stayed with them hence they were at risk. Four of his family members (his sister and her kids I think) actually ignored the quarantine order and left the flat prompting a judge to issue a quarantine order and have armed guards ensure they stayed in quanrantine. Now after your brother had put people lives at risk by importing ebola, you then ignore quarantine to put more people at risk. It is ignorance that has allowed the virus spread to the epidemic level faced in Liberia e.g. people due to rumours and superstition ignoring medical advice, attacking health workers or not reporting cases on time leading to faster transfer as people were not quarantined. Nigeria need to be vary wary about flights from Liberia going forward. Is this just sheer ignorance or is there something else happening? |
Instead of spreading the disease to Nigeria and America. Wouldn't it be great if some of the infected Liberians infiltrate IS in Iraq and Syria and infect them? Maybe infiltrate boko haram whilst at it. Would sure do the world some good. |
