News from APC is the selection of the VP has been handed to Tinubu, Amaechi has not been Selected by buhari |
Common sense at last. So much misinformation and conspiracy theories flying around with no basis, no investigation, no verification or confirmation. Yet everyone speaks authoritatively like they really have the facts. ocelot2006: |
Nigeria is one big confused misinformed country. From the leaders, to the followers down to the chickens on street. One big massive confusion. You never know the truth with all the lies and half-truths from the government, and Nigerians love of conspiracy theories and adding salt, pepper and Maggi to stories they heard. We're not helped by half baked journalists for whom investigation isn't in their dictionaries. It's all about copy and paste with not verification or checking if the story is correct or makes sense. True words. You only have one life to live. deeptesting: |
Wise words Goldenboy007: |
I've noticed this trend on nairaland where everyone is told to set up a business or statements like below the at 45 you must be an employer not employee. The truth if life is there will be employers and there will be employees. Not everyone is cut out to own their business and not every business owner is cut out to develop a business which is why the likes of Bill Gates needed Steve Balmer to make Microsoft the global company it is now. Why Mark Zuckerberg needed Sheryl Sandberg to make facebook the successful public company it is now. (notice I said company not product). There are people like bill Gates who have the idea and product, and there are those like Steve Balmer who come with the skis, knowledge, experience and connections to build that product into a successful corporation. This is especially important as many innovators like mark zuckerberg are not good at monetising their products. You have no clue what his background is so stop putting people down with such statements. Suzyky4u: |
No ask God to punish your leaders past and present who have put you in this situation where with all your oil blessings you still go around begging left and right as you cannot do anything on your own as a country. UK and US do not have any obligation to Nigeria sorry to disappoint you and good luck with Russia and China. Let's talk when they have finished with you. bogolobango: |
Thanks for this point. I have always stressed the fact nigerians seem to have a misguided impression of how important they are to the US and even the international community. Our only attraction is/was oil and even then we still towed behind Saudi Arabia and did their bidding. We need to being more to the table and stop kissing ass about from US to China to Russia and next North Korea. [quote author=SirShymex post=28575294] That's a fact. Especially a country like Nigeria that's inconsequential to the US strategically. I don't know why most of you can't just do a simple research - and it's all about jumping on yank's d1ck. |
Sorry to disappoint but China and Russia do not have Nigerians interest at heart and will only make decisions that benefit them. The what's in it for me factor will always play a role. Solution is for Nigeria to step up to its rightful place in the international scene so countries partner with us due to what we bring to the table not all this begging left and right we currently do. Our main negotiating tool of oil is increasingly losing its value and hold everyday due to falling oil prices, over supply nd slowing demand. We need to diversify our economy and develop the keys sectors such as health, education power, defense, etc and the ripple effect will be through the economy so we can bring more to the table and demand to be treated as equal contributing partners and not some nuisance to be fed crumbs off the table in exchange for the future rights of our citizens. |
Tell me about it. Why does everything have to be so stressful? And annoying thing is the email then refers to you a newspaper advert a few days What the he'll ? Giant of Africa can't send a details in the email? They have to send you email to look for newspaper advert a few days ago ?? vivichocs: |
Nigeria is a shit country that does everything to frustrate it's citizens. Shit shit shit country Commonwealth scholarship which foreign body wants to give your citizens to better their lives you frustrate them for what? Sending email for interview hours before the interviews. Is this because they have already allocated the scholarships amongst their people? So pissed with the crap attitude. Selfish inch of people. Why does everything have to be so difficult and stressful in Nigeria? Poor people who applied getting email hours before and start stressing on how to get there, and worse you go through thick and thin to get there and they have already allocated to their people. Arrrgghhhhhhh I did not apply for the scholarship, but know people who did and it just infuriates me |
Good points. I guess it confirms out educational sector is in shambles and needs to be sorted out urgently. I wept for Nigeria when I heard people are going as far as Rwanda all in the name of I studied abroad. As the so called giant of Africa, Nigeria should be the hub in education, health, tourism, financial centers etc in West Africa at the very least if not all of Africa, instead we have schools in countries like Ghana which operate in porta kabins exploiting nigerian students who are so desperate given the education situation in Nigeria. saxywale: |
One of my main concerns with this trend is the fact that the universities coming to Nigeria to advertise and chase students are NOT high ranking universities with good reputations. As I tell people who come to me for advice on picking universities in the UK, if the university has to advertise and chase students, or if they cannot fill their places locally and have to go through clearing even for British students then as an international you will find it hard to get into good companies in the UK post graduation especially now where there is no post study worker visa and you need a company to sponsor you. I find it interesting that you look at top universities in the UK and the nigerian population is small from say 1 admit a year at the likes of Oxford to a few more at the tier 2 universities, but nigerian make up nearly half of the population at schools like London met, East London uni, South bank etc. Look at China, they use foreign universities to train their best and brightest that's why you will see high population of Chinese students at the likes of lse etc, for Nigeria it's more our of desperation and maybe a fad. Shame cus you go to uk or us student visa forums here on nairaland and everyone is asking which school is cheap, which doesn't ask for toefl or gmat etc. Looking for the cheapest and easiest to get into. Well if it's cheap and easy to get into them expect nothing special. |
Because Saudi Arabia want to keep price down to combat the shale industry in America. If OPEC cut production, oil prices will stabilise or rise meaning America continue to increase shale production. If prices continue to fall then shale oil is less commercially viable. The problem with this strategy is countries like Saudi Arabia have built large reserves from oil and can easily withstand falling oil prices. Countries like Nigeria who as the poster explained didn't build good reserves during the hay days are facing rapidly falling revenues leading to austerity measures. By the way it fell to $70 by end of day and general consensus by analysts is oil prices of about $60 which will be the norm for a while. As they say what goes up must come down podosci: |
This pretty much sums up why Nigerian economy is under so much pressure from the falling oil prices: "Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates have combined savings of $2.5 trillion dollars. Unlike Iran, Nigeria and Venezuela, they can afford to be less concerned about falling prices because they have built up a deep financial cushion." What happened to all the excess crude oil earnings? Anyway given Saudi Arabia wants oil prices to fall to fight shale gas, Nigeria is going to face more pressure in the coming months and years |
And what is the cost of doing business in Nigeria? Financing alone costs over 20% for bank loans if you even get it. The 36% thrown around by Aganga means little without understanding the high risk and cost involved in doing business in Nigeria |
Infantrydoctor, God bless you for speaking the truth. Nigerian leaders are a reflection of the people and we need a total overhaul of our mentality and values. infantrydoctor: |
Who you be? Oh sorry my oga at the top. I'm loyal lol MissMeiya: |
Yeah they never do that's why you have people on the us student visa page on nairaland with success stories. If you meet the requirements you have a higher chance of getting a visa, but unless you prefer to receive yourself we all know there are lots of nigerians applying for visa when they don't meet the requirements . This is the same in India, China, etc. How many times have we seen on nairaland people who have no financial means looking for people's bank statement to use to decieve the embassy? As I said in my previous post the rule applies to all. Even British passport holders who are visa free to the us. If they do not meet the criteria for visa free entry e.g. if they have a criminal record which wasn't declared they will be turned back at point of entry. The us immigration will not say ok nah oga pikin or cus he is British. You will be sent back. onila: |
It's common knowledge that the US tend to deny people applying for non-immigrant visas when you have close family in the states with permanent residence in this case the wife as the impression is you want to migrate. The correct thing will be to apply for an immigrant visa class and not non-immigrant visa based on the wife's status. For all those claiming America embarrassing Nigeria etc sorry but bit nigerians aren't the only ones applying for visa. Indians, Chinese, Filipinos etc all applying so stop this entitlement attitude you guys have. It's Nigeria who make decisions based on do you know who I am rather than do you meet the criteria. The mentality there is different e.g. there is a video on the Internet where Obama visited someplace and the security lady asked for his I'd to sign him in. Woe betide anyone who tries that with Jonathan. Even with some lowly councillor. That's the difference - do you know who I am culture. Cus she is an athlete from nigeria means nothing. UK rejected snoop dog from entry a few years ago. The rule of law applies not the rule of who you are and anything goes. |
Oh yeah all those americans queuing at the nigerian high commission new York since 5am have been crying because they will miss the carnival. Richy4: |
AT LEAST!!? That's the phrase that keeps Nigeria in the mess it is in. The phrase that is used to justify everything that is wrong with this Country. At least your got your passport even though you had to pay far more than the official price to grease elbows. At least they least you go even though the police extorted money from you, at least you have a job even though your employer discriminates and pays pretty much illegal pay levels, at least, at least at least. Stories like this makes me agree with the usa when they did not sell weapons to Nigeria. And yet in the giant of Africa all these abuse goes on and nothing happens. No one held to account. In a sane country even war crimes are persecuted if you do not follow the engagement procedures. Nigerians Nah anything goes and Jonathan is using blame on America to campaign. |
You sound like of those nano silver believes. For your information Nigeria handled ebola with the help of the CDC based in America and for your information aside the index case of Duncan, America has treated every other ebola cases unlike Nigeria where 50% died. Nigerians have perfected the art of blaming everyone and everything for the failure of its people and government. Blame witch in village, blame devil, blame America, but never blame mediocrity . I'm a sane country there would be questions asked as to why our army is so poorly equipped. What has happened to all the defense budget for the past years Has it all been stolen or arw we saying the government purposely did not equip the army? Nigeria budgeted $2.3bn for defense in 2013 after years of average increase of 20% since 2007. What has been done with the money as we know families of soldiers who died in service were not getting their entitlements Wh ere is all the money going? Instead it's blame game. Continue blaming America and don't cox the rot in your country. You blame America for everything yet everyday queue at their embassy. Rexnegro: |
Yes Nigerian military lack the technical know how. beating civilians you should be protecting around doesn't make you a professional fighting force. Burning buses on ikorodu road are not the signs of a professional military. We saw the news recently of the hundreds of people released by the nigerian army after being arrested as boko haram suspects. Those were the lucky ones how many would have been killed innocently all in the name of boko haram. Whilst boko haram must be stopped, human rights must not be trampled on as that is a fundamental foundation of a sane society. The rule of law must apply, but in Nigeria it is the rule of anything goes. I saw a documentary on the abuse by the army and it is appaling. If the Nigerian army were so technically advanced then let them develop our own weapons and stop begging around. Why is is now we are trying to equip our army? Closing the door after the horse has bolted. When you show you can maintain your international airport, the myriad of bad roads all around the country, maintain a national airline, provide functioning accommodation for youth corper, maintain proper barracks for soldiers then let's talk about how you can maintain high tech weapons. I will not be suprised if the helicopters end up with boko haram or worse end up as scrap in a yard in a couple of years time. How many planes does the Nigerian airforce have? bandisandi: |
Wow what an incompetent government. USA has not sold arms to you for 20 years and yet you spent all these months begging them and waiting. Don't even know what to say. |
Following the recent outburst by the Nigerian Ambassador to the US on their refusal to sell arms to Nigeria, I have been wondering why we are finding it so hard to buy the arms needed to defeat Boko Haram. This seems to explain the USA's reluctance: "Although US officials are keeping silent on the subject, it’s not hard to figure out why Nigeria is not a good candidate for weapons deals. Unlike many countries, US law expressly forbids the sale of weapons to militaries who have been implicated in serious human rights violations. Unfortunately, the Nigerian military falls squarely into that category." http://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2014-11-13-why-will-no-one-sell-arms-to-nigeria/#.VGSXjpjivIV On one hand I agree that the human rights abuse is wrong and must stop, on the other hand not getting the arms means more innocent people will die in Northern Nigeria. What's the way forward... |
Hahaha, not just any broom stick, but a broom stick from the broom Oduduwa used when he came down from heaven with a broom and hen CoolHunk: |
True but I can't think of a country which values it's citizens who will be paying for election adverts in foreign media. Really? With all the issues facing nigerians Okijajuju1: |
diresimdi:I have no political affiliation and I don't know if it is APC who bomb the children or not. If it is then it is a sad situation when we kill innocent people to get into public office just to steal steal steal. Now even if it is APC it is a failing of goodluck 's government in one of its primary objectives - protect lives of Nigerian citizens. |
Vicotex:my statement was on the lack of value of human life by the Nigerian government with their misplaced priorities and not CNN. Thanks for the insult btw |
I would normally agree with you, but in my opinion the money being spent is directly or indirectly public funds. Okijajuju1: |
