Music/Radio / Re: Reuben Abati Vs Banky W: A Must Read! by tundewoods(m): 6:38pm On Jun 24, 2009
All this because of Reuben Abati's article about Nigeria's identity crisis !!! WOW , i am truly impressed !

@ Posters

Lets face it Reuben Abati being a seasoned name in Journalism here in Nigeria, made some candid points even though he miss fired in some areas and really did a good job contradicting himself several times.

I still respect the dude for having the guts to speak his mind or better put his opinion.

But dont go killing your selves over Dr. Abati's remarks and observation because i dont think it changes a thing. Instead i think the present generation's artists should take a sober reflection on the valid points that Dr. Abati made.

@ Banky W

With your intelligent and well articulated reply to Dr. Abati's opinion, you may have gathered a larger fan base. LOL ! Good for you.

But please pass the message across to all the so called artistes in this our present generation that are missing the vital points that Dr. Abati tried to raise.

no be by force to be artist, after all as someone has rightly put it rap music seems to have more rappers that rap fans. Naija truly don jaga jaga as Idris Abdul Kareem put it.
Education / Re: Why Is The English Language Skill Of Nigerian Graduate So Appalling? by tundewoods(m): 1:41pm On Jun 24, 2009
Uchek:

Why is the English Language skills of Nigerian graduates appalling? Is (it*) the fault of teachers, parents, government or students? Is it the lack of sufficient Internet time (What on earth does that mean !) to prepare their resumes?

We received hundreds of application for job positions in our start-up company (,) (A comma is obviously missing here)within 24 hours of publicizing them (Wrong use of a pronoun. Without even bothering to look at the suitability of the applicants for the positions, 90% of the CVs( yes 90% so far) deserve(d) to be disqualified because of (use)poor English Language skills: (I believe the use of t he word namely would not be a bad idea.)
[li]bad grammar.[/li]
[li]Spelling mistakes.[/li]
[li]Beginning sentences and proper nouns with small letters.[/li]
[li]Not following application instructions.[/li] ( Is this sentence english language or pidgin ?
If our microscopic experience is anything to go by(, the coma should be placed here not after then)then, the comments that the quality of Nigerian graduates are nothing to write about may be sadly true.

Uche k. Oparah * (Sadly you are a typical example.)

@ Poster, you have posted a question or better still a riddle that you will only be able to solve once you also learn to write and speak correct English Language.

LOL ! Your case seems like a pot calling a kettle black !
Islam for Muslims / Re: Islam And My Profession - I Need Help by tundewoods(m): 1:56pm On Jun 23, 2009
@ Javalove

Now the issue you have raised,i believe is quite a straight forward one. If you feel that your religous belief is against you taking the job. I believe you have your consience to guide you to making the right decision of either accepting or declining the offer.

Emphasising that a lot of money is involved still may not be a determining factor depending upon your conviction. In respective of your religious belief. Lets also try to be religious tolerant.
TV/Movies / Re: Can Nollywood And Bollywood Ever Work Together? by tundewoods(m): 1:03pm On Jun 23, 2009
captured:

It is no more news that Nollywood and Bollywood have given HollyWood a run for thier money, but how will people especially nigerians respond to shows, movies and such projects between Nollywood and Bollywood.
Would we get the response level we get when you mention Hollywood stars?
For example: If Bollywood living legends like Anil Kappor of Slumdog Millionaire,  Dharmendra and Hemamalini were to come to Nigeria on a tour or something like that?

@ Poster

I am trying hard to comprehend what seems to be your motivating factor behind this thread. But that at it may be,is for another day. The point is why on earth do you think our "glorified home video" industry nick named Nollywood can even be compared to a much more organized and sophisticated Bollywood ?

We dont make movies if you ask me but home videos that can only be glorified by the likes of MNET's African Magic Channel. Dont take it personal but MNET knows what its doing by glorifying these home videos. They need a leverage which they seem to have found in the DSTV African Magic due to its mass appeal in Nigeria and West Africa.
Politics / Re: American Gala Seller Responds! by tundewoods(m): 8:39pm On Jun 19, 2009
When i initially saw the story about Sean selling Gala on PM News then subsequently reading the really clumsy posts about the presumed conspiracy theories and para phobia of him being planted by the CIA or FBI was just a laughable rib cracker that reminds you how relevant and important the average Nigerian likes to feel.

What however caught my attention and got me rolling on the floor laughing was some excerpts from your blog quoted below.

I hawk, you hawk, we hawk,   Blog Source

Gala are sausage rolls that taste like sawdust to me, but at 35 cents each they are cheap, filling, and thus very popular with Nigerian commuters. Typically sold by young men during traffic tie-ups, they are the most frequently-hawked item in Lagos.

I put on my running shoes and went to Ojota, where I bought a half box, or 50 rolls, from a wholesaler for about fifteen bucks. I set out. Of course I knew that, as an oyibo, I would not get a wholly accurate peek into the life of a Nigerian street vendor. I thought that it would be more difficult for me to make sales, since potential customers would think it was a joke.

Its really a commendable thing you are doing for your Flubright Exchange program and to face the fact, Street vendors or better known as Hawkers are not a threat to the society,if are to be sincere with our selves.

Why ?

A down to earth female web designer simply posts her availability to work on web projects and some of you now seem to turn her thread upside down. Is it because she is female or because its written in your books that Males are the best web designers.

Simple point of correction to most of you Ego driven dudes. Grow Up ! Get matured and face the realities of this present time.

Obviously a good female web designer or developer can double both as PR and Techy Personnel.
Webmasters / Dora Akunyili's Appointment A Blessing In Disguise For Web Developers by tundewoods(m): 9:30pm On Dec 25, 2008

Source : http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art20081225217390

The Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili, has lamented the shutting down of the nation’s official website – www.nigeria.gov.ng – as a result of the inability of government officials to maintain the national flagship.

Akunyili, who spoke at the first meeting she had with heads of parastatals under the ministry in Abuja late on Tuesday, also gave all agencies in the ministry a deadline of March 2009 to establish their own websites.

She also barred officials of the ministry and the parastatals from receiving free telephone lines and cable televisions, directing those that already had such gifts to return them before the end of January 2009.

Noting that the incidence of poor telecommunications services has continued, the minister directed the Nigerian Communications Commission to monitor and report quality of service parameters on regular weekly basis.

She said, “Today, we live in an information age where access to information should be made readily available, and yet information about Nigeria from Nigeria is not easily accessible. I find it disheartening that the Ministry of Information and Communications does not have a website.

“It is also very discomforting that our flagship corporation, Nigerian Television Authority, does not have a website. It is unfortunate that the official government website www.nigeria.gov.ng, which was launched in 2005, and recoded 1.3 million visits in its first year, making it one of the most viable national websites in the world, has been shut down for many months. This website, which serves as a gateway to Nigeria, must be reactivated.

“Every parastatal must have an active and vibrant website up and running before the end of March 2009, and I am ready to support you to make sure that this happens. On our part, before the end of March 2009, this ministry will create a vibrant website that will enable people around the world to find everything they need to know about Nigeria in a click. This will be an interactive website that will allow people to ask questions and get answers. It will also provide polling opportunities as an avenue to know the feelings and desires of our people on various issues.”

On telecommunications, Akunyili said it was general knowledge that services rendered by telecom operators were poor, adding that most Nigerians were unhappy and expressing displeasure over the services of mobile telecom operators.

The minister said the incidences of dropped calls, poor voice signal quality and poor reception have caused unnecessary financial burdens for Nigerians as they carry multiple handsets to be able to connect to working networks.

Music/Radio / Wale Adenuga Of Fop Recipes For Achieving A Successful Live Worship Recording by tundewoods(m): 1:34am On Aug 21, 2008
Wale Adenuga of (FOP)Fountain of Praise shares the recipes required for achieving a successful live worship recording

Among his many successful multi selling live worship albums include the following

1. Of a Truth
2. You are the only One
3. This is not Enough

Below are excerpts from his article

Over the past one year, I have been inundated with several requests for appointments with respect to advising on how to do a successful live recording. I do feel like a big boy! We now have the experience, right?! Oscar Wilde is quoted as saying “experience is the name we give our mistakes” That’s just it. I will like to share our experience in that light so that you won’t make the mistakes we made if you intend to go on that route.

It’s easy for me to say now that doing live recordings are not a big deal. I recall the goings-on at Hope Hall, Surulere in December 2000 when we were recording Of a truth. But four live recordings later, I can say that with God on one’s side and with knowledge of the basics, recording live can be a glorious experience

Why do you want to record live?

Our answer to the above question was based on the kind of songs we wrote and our worship experience in our local assembly. The songs we wrote and continue to write even now were of the praise and worship genre. And since the late eighties, most of the music I have listened to has been from Integrity, Maranatha and Vineyard Music. That was a major influence for me and people like Dehumo Bickersteth [our producer] and my friend Theophilus Emmanuel with whom I constantly bounced ideas back and forth in the mid nineties.

We had done two studio recordings Surely as my God lives [1997, out of print] and Hosanna [1999]. Both of these recordings were great but we felt it didn’t adequately express the potential and passion of our songs and style.

What have you got?

Songs. But it’s got to be more than that! In line with Matt Redman’s song Heart of worship, it should be a situation that is reminiscent of bringing God more than a song. We aim to make every recording an experience. Dehumo, who has been our producer from the start is always particular about presenting the songs in such a way that will not intimidate anyone.

I have always been responsible for which songs end up on all our recordings ultimately. In so doing, I liked to include confessions, testimonies, prayers and recitations to accentuate our expression of worship. A live worship recording in my opinion should be an aggregate of expressions of worship that have adequately worked in church, that is in terms of providing a refreshing to people.

I have noticed that most loved live recordings have an evergreen nature about them. It almost seems to never go out of fashion. Left to me, Of a truth would never have been released. And that’s because till today, I hear all the mistakes we made. But the truth is, we’ve sold hundreds of thousands of this recording [not counting the ones the pirates have sold] and it’s still selling fast. I can tell you this, it’s not selling that much because the music is tight, there’s just a God factor involved.

Who have you got?

The thing with doing a live recording is that you have to get a lot of things right on the day of the recording. You can’t do another take like you would do in the studio. Of course you can do over dubs, but then it becomes tricky when you are also doing a video recording of the concert. Everything must be in sync otherwise, it would seem fake. So it requires lots of rehearsals so that even if you do overdubs it will be for things like backing vocals, bass lines and the like.

Good singers. Don’t let your girlfriend sing on the recording if she can’t sing. Go for the best that’s available. We’ve worked with other church choirs and even groups like Lagos Unity Mass choir. The musicians must be tight but must also have a heart of worship. Tosin Odumosu and Bimbo Olatunji who have become a standard feature on our recordings are not members of our choir.

All said and done, the key person you need is a producer. Current hit Songs like Lagi mo, Igwe, Mo fe ran Jesu gan are a reflection of the quality of producers engaged by the artists that sang these songs. A producer is not just somebody who can sequence music on a keyboard. A producer according to Wikipedia is someone who can be compared to the film director, in that the producer's job is to create, shape and mold a piece of music in accordance with their vision for the album.

Once I gather the songs we need for a recording, I mail them to my producer, Dehumo who lives in faraway Singapore. He then molds each song. I don’t say to him "this is the way the song must be done because that’s the way God gave me!" I always tell people who say songs must be performed in the “very way God gave them” should prepare to sell just 3 copies of their album – and that will be to God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. If only they knew that God never gives us finished products!

Technical support

The company you choose to do your recording is very critical to the success of the recording. The know how, track record as well as the equipment they have is of paramount importance. That said, things can go wrong on the day of the recording. I recall when we were recording Of a truth, one of the ADAT recording machines stopped working. And the engineers were waving frantically from behind asking us to stop. Our guest artists, Panam Percy Paul must have spent another half hour talking on what I can’t recall now. Everybody enjoyed it. They didn’t know something was going wrong. Of course we cut out that “speech” from the recording.

We’ve worked with two companies in terms of live recording and both are exceptional in the passion they bring to the table. These companies are Praise Foundation and Frontier Reelmix. We have meetings again and again going over how many singers, which instruments we need, stage layout and so on. And of course, the budget! We go over that a lot of times. We try and get the best price possible. What compromises can be made without discounting quality? What do I mean? Let me give you an example. Say Praise Foundation gives us a quote of N750,000 and that includes the cost of renting backline equipment – keyboards, bass guitar, congas etc. If you have these, the cost can be discounted and then you would provide these as long as they are great working condition.

Aside from You are the only one recording, we’ve always had our own recording engineer in place. That’s been Monday Williams and all he does is monitor the output from the sound guys and the input into the hard disk we are recording into. Monday has also been responsible for post production mixes of all our live recordings save You are the only one

Will you be doing video? That needs proper planning as well. Have you watched the video of Worship by Michael W. Smith? Or Blessed by Hillsong? We contracted Image Extenzion to handle video recording of You are the only One and I can say our expectations were met. The resulting video must be the recording of an experience that inspires people to worship. This means the director knows what to look out for and when to look out for it.

Prayers

So many things to pray for. We always pray that God be present and that we will end up with a recording that will cause people to have encounters with their Redeemer. And that has happened and God has confirmed this with each recording with signs following. For example, recording Too much for me was a humbling experience for us all. We were all broken because of some traumatic things that happened days before the event. So we just abandoned ourselves into God’s hands. We were broken, depressed and in debt. But during that concert with a seemingly disappointing attendance, God healed someone of Pneumonia .

A gentleman called our office and remarked how he had listened to You are the Only One CD repeatedly for days. It had brought him the needed comfort, joy and strength while his wife had a stroke and was in coma for 2 weeks. Now she’s Ok and I’ve actually spoken with them a couple of times. For me if that’s the only reason we did the recording, that’s fine.

Everytime we have a recording, we have huge budgets and we always end up asking ourselves who asked us to venture into such tasks. But God meets those needs.

Well I do hope all I have shared will help you somehow in your quest in recording a worship experience that will bless people.
Politics / Robin 'Ndi Okereke' Hood : Robbing In The Name Of Obama by tundewoods(m): 12:45pm On Aug 20, 2008
Recently, a full paged newspaper advertisement by an organisation, Africans for Obama ’08, for a dinner/concert was published. The advert was signed, amongst others, by Dr. (Mrs.) Ndi Okereke-Onyuike OON, as Chairman, Africans for Obama.

The Dinner has since been held but the effects and implications are just about to unfold especially since the objectives of the Group and the dinner/concert is to raise funds for the Barack Obama Campaign in the United States of America, now what actually baffles me and has got me so perplexed is “ Why on earth a Nigerian group now decides to start raising money after Barack Obama has clichéd the primaries ticket, I guess you may find this baffling too right ?

Now checkout the ridiculous cost of the so called dinner tickets that were sold in the category of Platinum (Corporate table for eight people for N2.5m and individual N325,000. For the gold category, the ticket was sold for N2m for corporate table of eight and N275,000 for an individual.

Your bet is as good as mine, the dinner was a success with gullible Nigerians parting with such a hefty sum all in the name of “supporting Obama”
However in a swift reaction, the campaign organization of the Democratic Party‘s candidate for the November 2008 United States presidential election, Senator Barack Obama, has dissociated itself from the activities of a Nigeria-based group, Africa for Obama.

The letter disowning Ndi Okereke's Africans for Obama.

The campaign organisation said in a letter to the Editor, PUNCH online, that it was doing so based on an advertisement that the Nigerian group was organizing a fundraiser for Obama.

However Okereke-Onyiuke sensing the storm also swiftly responded and said the event organised by ‘Africa for Obama’ was not aimed at raising funds for Obama but to sensitise Africans living in America.
The NSE chief said, ”At no time did we say we were raising money for Obama. No this is rather pathetic and in my opinion the anticipated reply considering that the average Nigerian will defend his wrong or better put evil doings even when its obvious that he or she has erred.

Ndi continued by saying that
what they are saying is that Obama is for the world and he has been getting support from Europeans, from Arabs and from all over and Nigerians should not be different. Please can you explain anything sensible in the above statement quoted to her.While her next line below will certainly knock you below the waist line as the highly placed corporate openly admitted that the money being raised was not for Obama according to her own words ;
“We are not collecting money for Obama” .

according to her they are just mobilizing people who are eligible voters to go out and register and vote for Obama.
Now what rubbish, if mobilizing is about selling dinner tickets for sums ranging from 2 – 3 million naira per table to gullible money bags way back in Nigeria.
Then i challenge the noble and respected corporate woman that she and her cohorts are simply robbing in the name Obama.

Kini big deal is a ground breaker currently,if you doubt go ask Storm Record's Obi Asika for sales figures both outside and inside Nigeria.

Face it,Naeto C and Ikechukwu have paid their dues.

By the way, if you hate him then it's got to becos he was born with a silver spoon and still making a mark in the entertainment scene right.

By playing ball i mean you should start a poll on the thread to sample of other peoples opinion. Lets see who wins this man.I fall on the side that clearly feel the song falls extremely below his previous efforts.

Nice attempt to get us registered to your naijapals but on a very serious note,i am of the opinion that that track falls below the previous standards of Dbanj tracks.Every thing from beat, composition and even the off key voice of the lady singing the hook was not right.

Personaly that song is just there the regular Nigerian tunes, nothing special or worth the hype boys.Even my wife is of the same opinion after listening to it.

Once again nice try to get us registed on naijapal.

Now i want to borrow Yawa's brand thread title's to actually try to play big brother NL a little grin

Lets do a rather brief step by step tutorial on developing a 100% dynamic database driven website. By 100 % i mean that abosuletly every data outputed via our web page will be dynamic and called from the database. This consist of the following dynamic sections

1. Dynamic Navigation Links

2. Dynamic Head section containing (Titles, Meta tags, Keywords and Description)

3. Dynamic Cascading style sheets

4. Dynamic webpages and content

5. Dynamic flash adverts banner

And lastly Dynamic Images.

Now to start with we will be implementing a dynamic news content website that has a custom content management system using the combo of php mysql,

Our Softwares for the project comprise of
1. Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 for design and developement of our serverside apps
2. SQLYOG as our mysql GUI client
3. E.world's PHPmaker for generating our content management system.
4. WAMP5 as our testing & local server.

This will last over the next few days.

Let me clear the air regarding the channels tv portal, first of all,by default i don't really like to talk about my clients projects on public forums but for this one i guess smartsoft has already busted the bubble so well let just carry on.

Now the channels tv portal,if i can still remember clearly i did about 4 years ago and originally was outsourced to me and since 2004 till date it has gone through series of visual interface design changes.

The present visual interface the portal has is totally different from what we put in place however most of the serverside dynamic functionality is still in place.

Lastly regarding setting up your TV portal,it all depends on how you plan your web project. Note of warning a well laid out plan must be in place in terms of visual interface feel and serverside functionality before you rush into implementation.

all the best Girlfriend and good luck !

Webmasters / Deploying Generic Templates For Client Websites Is Rather Un Professional by tundewoods(m): 6:02pm On Jun 28, 2008
Now some of our self claimed "Web Programmers" now seem to want to confuse us with claims that designing rather sad and un attractive templates for their dynamic websites that can generated in less that an hour as they usually claim for their platform is the order of the day.

now my question is this,is it not rather absurd and unprofessional to have a generic template implemented for clients that have paid hard earned money to have a befitting website to end up being given a generic template already implemented for dozens of clients.

if creativity and concept development is still key in web development then i guess that clients deserver more than for some folks to claim to have platforms that can generate such generic websites for a million clients under 12 hours.
Webmasters / Distinguishing Between Basic Website Functionality & Severside Functionality by tundewoods(m): 5:30pm On Jun 28, 2008
Now lets clarify the difference between Basic Website functionality and Task oriented serverside functionality.

Funny as it may seem some web developers have come to confuse both concepts and are rather of the opinion that web development in this present Web 2.0 age must be aligned towards the later concept .

Now based on the basics i still remember i believe basic website functionality and essentials for either simple static websites or complex web apps are thus.
[li]Well defined meta tags,keywords & page titles [/li]
[li] Web pages should have relatively "OK" download time[/li]
[li]Neat and clean page and Content Layout "with or without CSS" [/li]
[li]Proper page & file naming conventions [/li]
[li]Easy to use navigation links with regards to web page links [/li]
[li] Web page information should be easily accessible [/li]
[li]Web page image files should be well optimized and edited [/li]
[li]Web pages information and content should updated regularly depending on the nature of the website [/li]
Now these are the basics i learnt from the books and tutorials i had back in the days and i doubt if they have changed. However when it comes to task oriented serverside functionality for web applications i am of the opinion that the earlier mentioned points also cover web applications however functionality in terms tasks oriented serverside apps depends on client needs and specifications.

Lets say for example our client is a Private School A that requires a web application with specific serverside application tasks for managing student personal
records and results.Obviously we will be dealing with setting up a website that has a remote database with the required db tables, custom serverside developed scripts to carry out the specific tasks required by the school website.

Now assuming that another Private School B that also require a website however this time around they just want a neat, clean and basic static website that makes all the necessary information accessible to visitors however doesn't perform any serverside tasks.Does that make the website not functional simply because it is static or no database driven tasks are performed.

I don't think so,The point is websites either simple static & visually appealing or task oriented serverside web applications with functionality are both website and both useful to their targeted audience.
Webmasters / Re: Between Functionaly And Beauty - Where Lies The Future Of Web Development? by tundewoods(m): 3:19pm On Jun 28, 2008

What is the use of a SIte that is not Functional? Don't forget That the reason For the site in the first place is not Beauty. Take for Instance JAMB online, no matter how Ugly it is, people will still keep browsing the site, as long as it is Providing the Required Functionality.

Also, I'll tell u the beauty of Nairaland is Not that Great At all. But why do I keep coming here, IT PROVIDES THE NEEDED FUNCTIONALITY.

Now can you please define or clarify your use of the word functioanlity in the first line of the quoted post of yours about "What is the use of a site if its not functional " Is your definition of functional based on dynamic functionality or basic functionality required of any standard website.

See lets stop decieving our selves,Beauty will always remain king when it comes to the concept of the world wide web. You mentioned a rather typical example in your thread which is the JAMB ONLINE WEBSITE.

No hard feelings i am of the opinion that yes agreed we are forced to use the website based of its rather irrational functionality but one point must be emphasised that its monopolistic website in its nature being that it is the only website you can use to access results be as difficult as it may seem but i bet you fif there other optional websites with better visual appeal and improved functionality most Nigerians would rather access UME results from them.

Beauty is prime , basic functionality is key and task /serverside oriented functionality is optional or dependent on nature of operations.
