Compared with other United Arab Emirates' states, Dubai is very liberal. Islamic law still is observed there, but the tourism industry also is very powerful. That means thousands of visitors arrive to Dubai every week, many of whom are unmarried. While many Dubai hotels are likely to turn a blind eye to the issue, you still should take precautions about what you do and say. Regulations Islamic law prohibits unmarried couples from living together. The same rule applies to sharing a hotel room. In theory, hotels should also not call you a cab or help you book a tour in which you will be alone with your partner. This is based on the Tawajed clause, which states that people of opposite sex cannot be alone together unless they're married or are family. Practical Applications Most Dubai hotels don't enforce the "only married couples" rule. Luxury hotels, which often cater to foreigners, are especially relaxed, so chances are you won't have trouble booking a room. At check-in, you'll be required to show your passport, but having different surnames won't raise any eyebrows. In Dubai, married women often keep their surnames. Public Conduct Public displays of affection are not well-tolerated in Dubai. Holding hands is fine for married couples, but kissing or hugging in public are not acceptable. Keep in mind that if you're stopped by the police because you're holding hands and you're not married, you might run into trouble. This is unlikely to happen in the hotel and more likely to happen in public places like restaurants or shopping centers. Be aware of your surroundings. If you're staying at a hotel with a lot of Muslim visitors, it's always possible for them to alert the authorities about inappropriate behavior. If the police then discover you're not married, you might be in legal trouble. Precautions Once you've checked into a hotel, refer to each other as "husband" and "wife" rather than saying "my boyfriend" or "my fiance." A Tanzanian-based firm, Export Trading Group (ETG) has disclosed its intention to build a 50 million dollar fruits juice factory in Benue state Nigeria. Mr. Sanjay Sethi, Chief Executive Officer of ETG, stated this when he led a delegation of the company to the Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Samuel Ortom, in Abuja. Sethi said the management of the firm was in Nigeria to find a suitable location for the setting up of the company. He said that when operational, the company would make use of local products such as orange, mango and pineapple to turn them into citrus products. “We will also explore other areas of the citrus . We can also make citrus fibre. Apart from this, we believe that we can process and create made-in- Nigeria brand of citrus. “We have a commitment to set up a 50 million dollar investment in Nigeria for processing of fruits. We intend to set up this factory in Benue,” he said. The CEO said the choice of Benue was because of the availability of fruits in the area. “We need a peaceful investment environment in Nigeria and we have found it, especially in Benue”. “In our mission, what we heard about Nigerians is different from what we are seeing. “Nigerians are hard working people. It is a form of guarantee that you may come back if issued an entry visa. Even at that, the CO still has doubt regarding your reliability as a traveller. The onus lies on you to proof him otherwise. I will advise you not to claim that you're a student, because you will be discovered and it will be bad for your cause. Dont get red flagged. Get yourself occupied with something back home, become a consultant in your specialised field, or get occupied with volunteer work or an NGO. It could also serve as a tie to your country and also show that you have a responsibility here. THE Port and Terminal Multipurpose Services Limited, PTML, Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, yesterday, intercepted arms and ammunition concealed in one of the two vehicles loaded into a container. The Command’s Comptroller, Mr. Taju Olarewaju disclosed that the container was shipped in from the United States, adding that a suspect, who is the clearing agent to the importer, has also been arrested. Speaking to newsmen Olarewaju said one Smith and Wesson short gun, one Bushnel Sniper rifle, a revolver and two empty magazines were found inside GMC Jeep upon examination of the container. adeg: Very informative thread.She can't know if she will get the visa until she attends the interview. That means the earlier she makes payment for her visa, the better for her in securing a convenient date for her interview. She doesnt need the company to send her IV directly to the embassy, as this may not help sway the CO's decision in her favour. Even correspondence gets lost in transit. She will need to go for her interview with her IV in her hands. |

NEW YORK (AP) — The game that will be talked about for years and years required 198 strokes, 30 points, and 21 minutes to decide. Entire sets have taken less. It might be easy to conclude that Novak Djokovic won his tense, topsy-turvy U.S. Open semifinal against Stanislas Wawrinka despite dropping that epic third game of the fifth set. The truth is that the 2011 champion emerged with a 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory in 4 hours, 9 minutes on Saturday at least in part because of the one that got away. "Even though I lost that game, I felt like, 'OK, he's getting a little bit more tired, and maybe this is my chance to step in,'" Djokovic said. "And that's what I (did)." The No. 1-seeded Djokovic will play No. 2 Rafael Nadal on Monday. It's their record 37th match against each other, their sixth Grand Slam final, and their third meeting for the championship at Flushing Meadows since 2010. Nadal was a 6-4, 7-6 (1), 6-2 winner over No. 8 Richard Gasquet of France in Saturday's second semifinal, which was far less competitive than the first. Indeed, the tennis and theatrics at 1-all in the last set alone of Djokovic-Wawrinka were so compelling that the game was interrupted twice by standing ovations. By then, Wawrinka's strained right thigh had been taped after a medical timeout in the fourth set (he would be seized by cramps during his postmatch news conference). Former Inspector General of Police Mr. Sunday Ehindero has said that junior officers of the Nigerian Police lack proper training. He said this in a paper he presented at a training workshop on law, security and terrorism, organised by the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies in Abuja, yesterday. He said that the officers do not know how to balance their duty with human rights demands in a democratic society. Osun state governor, Rauf Aregbesola has said that the state government is planning to introduce special rural posting allowance to encourage its workforce to serve in the rural areas. The Governor stated this today at the second edition of an interactive public feedback programme tagged “Gbangbadekun" which took place at Baptist Day School, Oke Ejigbo, Ila Orangun. Aregbesola said as soon as the bill goes to the State House of Assembly and becomes law, workers from grade level 12 who want to get promotion will have to pass through the rural areas for at least three years. He explained that 25% of their basic salary will be added to their take home pay as rural posting allowance to serve as encouragement. Three persons were killed when gunmen attempted to kidnap chairman of the Young Shall Grow transport company, Chief Vincent Obianodo, along 22 Road Festac Town, Lagos, Daily Trust gathered. A witness said the gunmen, who were five and driving an SUV, over took the vehicle conveying Obianodo. They fired into the air to scare away passersby and then attempted to drag Obiabodo into their car when the police patrol team which was attracted by sporadic gun shots arrived the scene. The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, said she could not say if it was a kidnap attempt or robbery. She said two of the gunmen were killed in the cross fire while the others fled with gunshot wounds. She identified one of the deceased persons as the driver to the victim, adding that he was killed by the gunmen when they over took the vehicle. Fenerbahce have been excluded from European competition for the next two years after losing an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) against a Uefa sanction for match-fixing. Yobo The Turkish side had been due to go into the Europa League following their defeat by Arsenal in the Champions League qualifiers but will now be excluded from that and also from all European competitions next year. Ukrainian side Metalist Kharkiv’s appeal against a one-season exclusion from Uefa’s club competitions – also for match-fixing – has also been upheld by Cas. Uefa welcomed the Cas decisions and will hold a meeting on Thursday to decide which club will take Fenerbahce’s place in the Europa League group stage. U.S. -- In July, Kenneth Enlow was arrested after he was caught spying on a mother and her 7- year-old daughter from inside a public restroom's septic tank in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. Last Thursday, the 54-year-old pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of peeping Tom and was sentenced to one year in jail plus a $5,000 fine. Tulsa County sheriff's deputies arrested Enlow after the woman and her young daughter noticed something moving in the water beneath their public toilet at White Water Park; when the woman looked closer, she saw Enlow looking up at her from inside the toilet. The outhouse-style bathroom has a concrete floor that separates the toilet from the waste-filled pit below, the sheriff's report said. The suspect was peering up from beneath the plastic toilet seat and "covered in feces", the report said. "He went in there, climbed down in the septic and was looking up at the people utilizing that facility," Tulsa County Sheriff's Maj. Shannon Clark says. With the help of the Keystone Fire Department, the sheriff's department extracted Enlow, who was "covered with human waste," and took him to a nearby hospital for evaluation. Deputies say the 6-foot tall, 240-pound Viewer claimed his girlfriend "Angel" knocked him out with a tire iron and threw him into the tank. It is not clear what sit-tightism had to do with drab speeches of sit-tight leaders. Last Thursday, 22 August 2013, was another “inauguration” of Robert Gabriel Mugabe. The inauguration word-count of the last old man in the world to be sworn in 7th time for another five- year term in office was almost 4000. The diatribe- filled speech tasked the listeners (who were certainly as many as those who boycotted the predictable polls that made him another “winner”). The word count competes with his long reign! Obviously there was truly a long diatribe in Africa before Mugabe and there may very well be after him as long as Africans have no zero-tolerance to dictatorship. Perhaps the late former umpteenth Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi at the 64th General Assembly of the United Nations in New York in 2009 could have beaten President Mugabe’s record in incoherence, self-praise, arrogance and demagoguery packaged as an address. In his list of protocols were “Representatives of War Veterans, Detainees, Restrictees and War Collaborators”. This underscores the biometrics of citizenship in Zimbabwe under Mugabe’s 30 years in office. Mugabe with tongue in cheek acknowledged “For- mer Heads of State and Government” and “Outgoing members of cabinet”. Just think about it; if all former heads of states were to sit-tight like Mugabe, could there have been “Former Heads of State and Government” and “Outgoing members of cabinet” at the inauguration? My findings show that in Nigeria, from President Shehu Shagari in 1980s to President Goodluck Jonathan in 2014, as many as nine heads of states had witnessed Mugabe’s serial inaugurations and left him behind. If Mr Mugabe were to be a British prime minister through his hide and sit-tight game, the British would not have known such Prime Ministers as Sir John Major, Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and Prime Minister David Donald Cameron. Mugabe came to power almost same time Prime Minister Baroness Margaret Thatcher came to office. Of course, if Mugabe were to be a Chinese, Li Xiannia, Yang Shangkun, Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin, Hu Jintao, and the incumbent Xi Jinping could not have been Presidents of the fastest growing economy in the world compared to impoverished Zimbabwe. Robert Mugabe came to power when Ronald Reagan was in power. The two “Bushes”, namely George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton met and left him in office. Indeed President Barack Obama was in the college in the ‘80s when Mugabe was already a President. By Mugabe’s design, Obama may very well complete two terms in office before he completes his 7th tenure! If Mugabe were to be a South African, there would not have been a Nelson Mandela to succeed him! We would have been crudely denied a global moral authority on freedom, democracy, reconciliation and peace that Mandela represents. Since Mugabe came to office as many as seven presidents had emerged in South Africa. Four actually were democratically elected after apartheid; namely Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela 10 May 1994 – 16 June 1999, Thabo Mvuyelwa Mbeki 16 June 1999 – 24 September 2008 (recalled from office), Petrus Kgalema (Kgalema) Mothlanthe 25 September 2008 – 9 May 2009 and Jacob Zuma 9 May 2008 – to date. Mugabe shared statesmanship with apartheid Presidents: Pieter Willem (PW) Botha 3 September 1984 – 15 August 1989 (resigned), Chris Heunis 19 January – 15 March 1989 and Frederik Willem (FW) de Klerk 15 August 1989 – 9 May 1994. Reading the mind of RGM through his inaugural address, the continent would have to wait for long to see his back. His speech was certainly not a farewell one. Indeed it might very well be a beginning of history of his elongated rule. A man with selective sense of justice who accepted to be happily knighted in the ‘90s by the Queen under Lancaster House constitution, said his new re- election is the “first...under a new home-grown Constitution”! Note the “first”, not his last re-election. 33 years after independence, RGM’s selling point was still colonialism, not open unemployment as high as 80 per cent, multiple digit inflation and currency devaluation and unprecedented human drain in modern Africa. Indeed his opponent in the polls was “Lord Lugard, the author of this anti-African, neo-colonial notion” (his words!) But it was Sir RGM, not Lord Lugard who brutally suppressed Zimbabwean patriots like Joshua Nkomo, Herbert Chitepo, Josiah Tongogara, Ndabaningi Sithole, Abel Muzorewa, Edgar Tekere, Byron Hove, Margaret Dongo and left 13 million people with a no-challenger called Morgan Tsvangirai. According to RGM, election was over. His speech was however hunted by the spectre of the very election. He almost defined the world in terms of “Our enemies and detractors”! Even friends were qualified: “Genuine friends”. Increasingly xenophobic and insular, RGM blackmailed all with the land question. Witness him: “Yes, we regained control over our land and our people are happy. They revel in the ownership of that land which has now come. They are beginning to use it profitably, using it for durable wherewithal.” It is an open knowledge that Zimbabwe is less food secured than when he came to power despite his vote- catching land reform. But is RGM the only land reformer in a country of 13 million people that must cling to power for so long? RGM hinges his sit- tightism to “African values”. A 43-year-old final year Law student of the Lagos State University, Bruno Ehidiamen, on Tuesday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrate’s Court over alleged examination malpractice. The police arraigned Ehidiamen along with 35- year-old David Onuche, who allegedly falsely presented himself as Ehidiamen and assisted him to sit for the university’s final year examination. The accused, both male, reside in Ikeja. They are standing trial on a four-count charge of conspiracy, forgery, cheating in examination and impersonation. The prosecutor, Asp. Barth Nwaokoye, said that the accused conspired with each other to commit the offences at 4p.m. on August 15 at Agidingbin, Ikeja. He said that the offences contravened sections 322(2), 363, 378(2) and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. Examination malpractice is punishable with 10 years imprisonment under the criminal law. The accused, however, pleaded not guilty. The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Eniola Fabamwo, granted each of them bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum. @shiba0147, the situation your friend finds himself, is very complicated. Any wrong and contradictory statement he makes before the CO, can lead to red flags or outright ban. I will advise him for the sake of the records, to tell the CO the true position of his situation. Even if he gets refused this visa for now, it will clear his blunders and also enable him have another fighting chance some other day. |

A retired Archbishop of Benin Catholic Archdiocese, His Grace, Archbishop Patrick Ebosele Ekpu, recently, marked 50th anniversary as a priest. Since his retirement three years ago, the Uromi born cleric has dedicated his life to praying for the Church. On October 26, 2013, His Grace will be marking his 82 birthday. If they bought private jets, how did they come about the money? Félix Houphouët-Boigny built a basilica. I remember visiting Abidjan and from there I went to Yamoussoukro. It was the Nigerian ambassador to Cote D’Ivoire who told us that the man built the basilica from the resources of his family, that his father had a large expanse of land and that they had a lot of cocoa from which they made their wealth. But an outsider will say that he used government money to build it. So if a pastor had also bought a private jet and used the resources of his family, you probably will say he has used his followers’ money, but if indeed he uses his followers’ money and his followers allow him, then they have endorsed what he is doing. It may not be a good example he is showing others, but he has not abused his position or somebody else’s right. But if he uses the Church’s resources, I will say he has some questions to answer to his worshipping community and his God whom he claims to serve. Churches are springing up every day in Nigeria, but they don’t seem to be able to check corruption and immorality. It is necessary you go in to the embassy next year 2014. Forget submission for the current period in order to avoid signs of desperation. Secondly, the cousin you mentioned, how well do you know him / her and what is his / her resident status in the States? These are questions you need ask yourself to avoid a similar blunder you made in 2011...... |
