Barnabaseloka: I do not doubt the truth that one has died and risen with Christ during baptism. But what saves one is the believing on the name Jesus. If you agree that we die and rise with Christ in baptism then what have you been argueing about? If you agree with paul that in baptism we die with Christ and rise to a new life then why are you in the bandwagon that teaches that baptism is obsolate? And lastly what saves one realistically speaking is grace (granted to us by the merit of Jesus Christ), with faith as a precondition and actually usually given in baptism. |

MuttleyLaff: I am sorry brother, if you sincerely and genuinely do not understand what Peter was saying there
Let me ask you a question though, this question applies also to Syncan and possibly Ubenedictus too Dont worry, its not a trick question, its just a question, answers are for my benefit, are for estimating or gauging sake. Whose baptism, do you prefer? The baptism of John or the baptism of Jesus Christ?
Please carefully read and try to understand 1 Corinthians 10:1-2 before answering. No hasty reply.
1 Corinthians 10:1-2 1For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. 2They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.
You definitely must have earlier read me, post that Jesus sure did instruct them albeit this instruction was before he died and resurrected, in other this was before Jesus was glorified since I saw my name i'll answer, I prefer ofcuz the baptism of Jesus. |

Barnabaseloka: I don't know who Calvin was and I do not wish to know. Everyone with an open heart will easily understand what I have written concerning being 'born again'. All Christians believe that being born again preceeds water baptism, except you and few others who are yet to come to terms with this truth.
Water baptism does not save a sinner, but only the word of God and the Holy Spiriit. Water baptism is a 'physical' replica of what has 'spiritually' happened to anyone who is born again. It conotes how one has died with Christ (dipping in water) and the way one has risen with Christ (raised from the water) unto newness of life. Water baptism uses physical illustration to explain to one who is born again what really happened to such life spiritually. The 'spiritual' (being born again) MUST take palce before the 'physical' (water baptism). oh, Calvin is the guy who originated the doctrine of once saved always saved he also originated the doctrine of born again before baptism. He was the creator of reformed theology and the father of the reformed churches. He was the first person to teach what you are teaching today, you can read up on him. The doctrin you teach is a relative new doctrine in Christendom merely 400yrs old. Calvin is the fount of the doctrine you have been trying to explain. Baptism is not a replica of what had already happened, instead in baptism were were joined to Christ and became sharers of his death, it isn't some mere symbol, if it were Paul wouldn't have taught that when we were baptised we were baptised into Christs death. It isn't some symbol of a past event, it isn't a remembrance, it is a present reality whereby God unites us to the death of Christ and grants us new life. |

Barnabaseloka: Sorry, he did not put it or inferred it that in baptism anyone will receive salvation. Baptism is a 'symbol' of one dying and being raised with Christ. The actual event of salvation occurs spiritually before one is baptized physically. When one goes to the water to be baptized, he is not going there to be saved, but to demostrate symbolically or physically his fellowship in the death and raising of Christ. read it again he say we were baptised into Christ an thus baptised into his death and resurrection and into a new life. There is nothing like "symbol" there unless you have manufactured you own bible. All my own are discussing realities like been partakers in Christ death and resurrection in baptism. It didn't say "you died in Christ before you were baptised" or "baptism is a symbol of your dying in Christ" this is what it says You cannot have forgotten that all of us WHEN WE WERE BAPTISED INTO Christ were baptised into his death" I agree with Paul, when I was baptised into Christ I was baptised into his death. I died with him when I was baptised in him, not before. I chose what scripture says above Calvin. |

Barnabaseloka: Up till now, you are still hardened in your heart. Acts 9:17 And Ananias went his way and entered the house, and laying his hands on him said 'Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me that you may receive your sight and, be FILLED with the Holy Spirit. 18. Immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he received his sight at once; and he arose and was BAPTIZED.
Ananias did not need preaching to Paul again about salvation b/c Jesus had already met him on his way to Damascus. In Vs. 11, Paul was already praying, which I believe was that of repentance and believing in Jesus. This was manifest when Ananias called him 'Brother Saul'. It clearly showed that Paul had repented and believed. The only work Ananias did there was to pray for Paul to see again and to baptize him. Note also that Paul received his sight, was first filled with the Holy Spirit before he became baptized (Vs.17).
In summary, Paul repented, believed in Jesus, was filled with the Holy Spirit and was baptized. Only those who have been saved will be filled with the Holy Spirit and be baptized with water or vice versa. sorry you are again reading into that passage insead of read out of it. Annanias said he came to for the restoration of Paul sight and so he may be filled with the spirit, no where does that passage say he was filled with the holyspirit before he was baptised. Instead the teaching the bible gives is "believe and be baptised...so you may receive the holyspirit the promised of God". |

preetyb: Faith comes first before baptism. Faith is believing. U cant be baptize if you dnt believe in baptism. Nevertheless we are saved by grace. Many may have faith but may not be save if the grace is not there for them to please God. it is true we are saved by grace and faith does preced baptism. |

Barnabaseloka: Rom.6:4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Paul showed the 'significance' of baptism here, which is 'walking in the newness of life'. As we are baptised, it shows that we have died with Christ. As we are raised from the water, it shows that we have risen with Christ unto 'living in newness of life'. Paul used this to demostrate what water baptism meant i.e its significance in our lives. It is not at the point of baptism that one is saved. One is saved before going for water baptism, which shows physically how one has died with Christ and risen with Him into living a new life. sorry paul didn't say one was saved before baptism certainly not what Rm 6 is saying. It isn't saying "baptism symbolised what you have already received", it actual says "in baptism you were buried with him" and you were raised with him, put simply, in baptism you received savation. |

Barnabaseloka: 1. Being BORN AGAIN and being BAPTISED with WATER are never the same thing. Being born again PRECEEDS (occurs first before) being baptised with water. that is what YOU are saying, that was certainly not what Christians before calvin were saying all the way back to the apostles. Born again was alway water and spirit, it didn't preceed water nor spirit. I hear what you say, but I submit that it is a latter day manipulation not a Christian truth. 2. You mean that one has not been born again (saved) if as a sinner, hears the salvation message and accepts Christ into his life (believes in Jesus)? This your belief is erroneous. Acts 16:30 ... Sirs, what must I do to be saved? 31. So they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household. all you need to do is continue reading. 32 Late as it was, he took them to wash their wounds, and was baptised there and then with all his household. The apostles didn't separate faith from baptism, it is yoy who do so hence the reason why paul will say in Rm 6 "baptism which unite us to Christ". |

God bless you, for exonerating me with "you didn't use those words" and thank you noticing italo making up words from my post and putting words into my mouth.
So? Obsolete is not a stigma or is it to you?
Try and be objective instead of doing this the subjective way This in the full and complete context, is what Peter said in that 1 Peter 3:21 you out of context referred to: 1 Peter 3:21 And that water is a picture of baptism, which now saves you, not by removing dirt from your body, but as a response to God from a clean conscience. It is effective because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. another thing that pains me is when a Christian decides to play ping pong with scriptures. This is what my bible says. From vs 20b in the days of Noah during the building of the ark in which a few persons, eight in all were saved through water. This prefigured baptism which saves you now that passage says the waters in noahs time prefigures, foreshadowed, is an antitype of baptism which now saves me. It didn't say baptism is a mere picture or a figure, it instead said the waters of Noahs day is a figure of baptism which today saves us. You should go back and study the passage and maybe learn a little english. Am 100% certain, you are unable to quote verbatim anyone or me particularly, on this thread "teaching" or stopping anyone from using things obsolete or things gone past/beyond the "Best Before" date no! You didn't shout "stop it". You just called a new testament practice obsolate. And you remember Paul says what is old and obsolate is to pass away? When you start calling new testament practices obsolate then you are alledging the new covenant has failed, is obsolate and passing away. For you its no big deal right? Jesus DID NOT PERSONALLY water baptise anyone Jesus DID NOT PERSONALLY water baptise anyone. His disciples did the water baptism, not Jesus hahaha, you should read your bible more often, unless ofcourse you believe the bible writters were mistaken. Jn 3:22 After this, Jesus and his disciples went into the region of Judea, where he spent some time with them baptising |

OLAADEGBU: No man has the power to forgive anyone it is only Jesus who forgives and washes our sins away when we come to Him in faith.
"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).
As you can see there is no confessional nor any provision for priests that we should go to when confessing your sins. Jesus has replaced the priests and is now our High Priests who forgives and cleanses us with His own blood. We receive forgiveness and remission of sins through the name of Jesus Christ alone and not through any priest. you can take this up with Jesus he was the one who said "whosoever sins you forgive are forgiven" |

Yes, there are WORKS (actions) that back up one's FAITH, which SPEAKING is one of them. Nevertheless, we are not talking about 'speaking' but WORKS (living a godly life that shows that we have believed in Christ). FAITH (believing in Jesus) without WORKS (actions) is DEAD. Works keep one's faith alive and growing. If there are no works to prove one's faith, then there is no faith. You can't tell me that you believe in Jesus (have FAITH in Jesus) without showing me WORKS (actions) that testify of your faith. How do I know that you have believed in Jesus? amen! |

To answer your other questions Barnabaseloka: 2. John 3:5 talks about being BORN AGAIN and not about WATER BAPTISM as you might have thought. and i submit, that to be born again and to be baptised are exactly the same thing. 3. If one repents of his sins on hearing God's word and believes in Jesus, is he born again? no sir, to repent and accept Jesus is a good thing but that isn't what the bible means by born again, to be born again is to receive new life by water and the holyspirit, and the water is really water and this has been the consistent belief and understanding of all Christians for abt 1700yrs until calvin reformed the reformation, anyone who it defining it differently is making a new doctrine unknown to all older christians and playing with the word of God. It is of these "latter teaching" that scriptures rightly warn us about. 4. It is not everywhere the word 'water' is mentioned in the bible that it signifies 'physical' water. It can also signify the 'Holy Spirit' as well as the 'word of God'. This is what we have been trying to make clear here. my dear water is used as a symbol for things in scripture apart from "physical water", nobody is argueing that, instead I am saying for the passage at hand the literal water is the exact meaning of the passage, the practice of all early Christian and the consistent belief of christian, the latter teaching been inventions of men! |

Rm 6:4 So by our baptism into his death we were buried with him, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the father's glorious power, we too begin living a new lifethis shows us that the new life we are talking about is giving to us in baptism as we are buried with Christ and rise to newness of life. This my dear is a very clear passage and it also makes it clear that the birth of water and spirit is truly of water and spirit. It is certain baptism. Members go to confession on a set day with a set priest once a week. They need constant forgiveness, even though their “sins” may not even require absolution. They confess their defects because the aim in Opus Dei is perfection. Since no one is perfect, they always feel “sinful.” In The Way #780, the Founder says, “'Deo omnia Gloria” – “All Glory to God.” It is an emphatic confession of our nothingness. He, Jesus, is everything. We, without him are worth nothing: Nothing. Our vainglory would be just that: vain glory; it would be sacrilegious theft; the “I” should not appear anywhere.” opus Dei members go for confession once a week to a regular confessor and the founder believes all glory must be given to God, what is wrong with that? How does that relate to cultism? |
Christianity Etc › Re: Any Current/former Opus Dei Here? by Ubenedictus(m): 6:59pm On Jun 23, 2015 |
This is from the site already provided by d other poster, it addresses d so called coercion, manipulation and cult tags
Opus Dei and cult allegations In various places, The Da Vinci Code describes Opus Dei as a “sect” or a “cult.” The fact is that Opus Dei is a fully integrated part of the Catholic Church and has no doctrines or practices except those of the Church. There is no definition or theory – whether academic or popular – that provides a basis for applying the pejorative terms “sect” or “cult” to Opus Dei.
Opus Dei is a Catholic institution that seeks to help people integrate their faith and the activities of their daily life. As a personal prelature (an organizational structure of the Catholic Church), it complements the work of local Catholic parishes by providing people with additional spiritual education and guidance.
Opus Dei was founded in Spain in 1928 by a Catholic priest, St. Josemaría Escrivá, and began to grow with the support of the local bishops there. It received final approval from the Vatican in 1950 and began growing in many countries around the world. Today Opus Dei has roughly 83,000 lay members (over 3,000 in the United States) and 2,000 priests. Several million people around the world participate in its programs and activities, which are conducted in more than 60 countries.
The Da Vinci Code also makes melodramatic assertions that Opus Dei engages in “brainwashing,” “coercion,” and “aggressive recruiting," unfairly trying to tar Opus Dei with the same brush used against groups more deserving of such epithets. Opus Dei proposes to people to give their lives to God, following a special path of service within the Catholic Church. One’s life can only be given freely, through a decision coming from the heart, not from external pressure: pressure is both wrong and ineffective. Opus Dei always respects the freedom of conscience of its members, prospective members, and everyone else it deals with.
As a manifestation of its beliefs about the importance of freedom, Opus Dei has specific safeguards to ensure that decisions to join are free and fully informed. For example, nobody can make a permanent membership commitment in Opus Dei without first having completed more than 6 years of systematic and comprehensive instruction as to what membership entails. Additionally, no one can make a temporary commitment before age 18, nor a commitment to permanent membership before age 23. |

Barnabaseloka: Bro. Did you read my post carefully? You might have read it in a haste to pick out errors just as you have done. No one has denied the fact that baptism after one has believed in Christ is done with physical water, or did you not read the beginning part of my write-up? If you continue like this you will only get a biased or contradictory knowledge of the scriptures.
I made you know that it was not anywhere you see the word 'water' in the Scripture that it meant 'physical' water as in the case of baptism. Water can also be used to symbolize the 'Holy Spirit' as in John 7:37-39 and the 'WORD of God' as in 1 Pet.1:23, which are the two 'instruments' or 'means' by which one is born again in John 3:5. I made you understand that Jesus did not talk of giving people 'physical' water to drink but 'spiritual' water in John 4:13-14. What you succeeded in doing was not to understand what I have written but to talk pointless. It takes one to do a background study of some passages of the Scripture, under the power of the Holy Spirit to understand them. lol you have again swaped water for word. Maybe you should check roman 6. |

Let's do this the bite-size way What is another word for baptise and baptism? Are baptise and baptism exclusively used in relation to water and for water only? Can one be baptised with anything else than water? Can one have a baptism of anything else than water? What kind of water is Jesus referring to in John 7:38? Syncan are you familiar with John 7:37-39 (i.e. particularly the instructive and revealing bit in verse 39)
I have reproduced two translations below of John 7:37-39, for you
Jesus Promises Living Water 37On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! 38Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’” 39(When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.)
Living Water 37Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. 38"He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, 'From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.'" 39But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. this is why I enjoy the gospels, the evangelists always make sure to explain the figure of speech, d above passage is explained. Do you see any such explanation in jn 3:5? What is actually written after that discourse is that Jesus went to the countryside of Judea and baptised. There is nowhere that passage lends itself to figurative interpretation |
