Kobojunkie:
If you do not believe this is really about islam, why then should we argue is in a religious context when we know that the almajiris are not all muslims, and not all those who are beggars and also muslims are doing it in the name of islam?
LOL!!! U have a way with twisting words to suit ur own argument.

I believe there are major pre disposing factors to make one take up panhandling. One that cuts across the nation is poverty. That would explain the steady rise of pan handlers across the nation be it in Anambra, Ondo or Benue.

Another pre disposing factor is religion. That would explain the localised phenomeno we are seeing in just two areas of the country.

Did Yoruba's all of sudden become muslims? Most have been muslims all along, why the sudden rise in almajiris?
Maybe they are now becoming more conscious of their religion?  undecided I dont know !!! Ask them. grin

The point U are trying to make is that there is poverty. I agree with that. But that does not answer why there is a localized surge in "almajiriness" among the Western states.

If U are blaming poverty (which I believe is nation wide) then there should be a concomitant , if not proportional, surge in other parts of the country.

Here is what your answer does for me. It shows me that even you do not believe it is all Islam as you admit that the rich ones avoid sending their kids to beg as the
I wonder why U are just realizing that now  when I have made this clear in my previous posts  shocked shocked

Uche2nna:
Maybe not. I dont even think that I am the best person to answer that question but I would tell U what I know tho. 80 percent or more of kids begging in the North are almajiris , at least it used to be when I lived there.

And honestly, thier begging dont bug me that much. I am only concerned that these guys are the ones that are easily brainwashed into thinking that they have 9 virgin maidens waiting for them if they die trying to kill all the unbelievers.
I also stated clearly somewhere that the issue of panhandling cuts across tribe, nation or religion.

Yes religion is a factor here but the Yorubas did not become muslims overnight. We should put it into consideration that the economy is not helping matters either.
The article again mentioned Yorubas.

Last time I checked, the whole nation is not doing too good economically. Or are U suggesting that the Yorubas are the worst hit?  undecided

I think it is more of a coincidence that the issue of this almajiris is rife in the the two areas of the nations where we have the highest concentration of Muslims .

Kobojunkie:
Then you are the best person to ask this question. How many of the rich folks up there send their kids out to beg on the streets as islamic scholars?
Thats a one million dollar question. I ask myself that too. Not very many.

During my time in the North, a few (very few I must admit) comfortable folks (I would not wanna use the term rich cos that is relative) actually sent their kids to study under an Islamic Scholar and those kids also end up doing what other almajiris do. Most however, would prefer to open their houses to the almajiris and feed them rather than allow their kids become one.

The rise of beggars is as a result of poverty in Nigeria.
must_a_far:
people are responding to the issue from a most convinient angle. religion.
The article specifically mentioned almajiris and that is what I am responding to.

I understand the place of Almajiri’s in Islam but can we simply and fairly look at them all, I mean all muslim kids begging on the streets, and label them scholars of islam. Is this that they are ALL begging in the name of islam?
Maybe not. I dont even think that I am the best person to answer that question but I would tell U what I know tho. 80 percent or more of kids begging in the North are almajiris , at least it used to be when I lived there.

Kobojunkie:
I gave an example of a Christian man married to a muslim woman and unable to provide for his family. If it turns out the man is some drunk or irresponsible provider, is it still a religious issue if the wife feels it is ok for her to go out to beg as an almajiri so she can feed her kids?

If you say it it, then fine.
The issue of pan-handling cuts across every tribe, nation or sect and I dont think that is the issue that is of interest. We are talking about almajiris here. These are a group of kids whom are designated as scholars of the Koran. Their place and role is heavily recognized and espoused in the Muslim world. You are not doing the almajiri a favor by giving to him, actually, he is doing a favor by condescending to even receive from you.

I dont have a problem with them as long as they dont constitute a nuisance. But if U have been near a religious riot or near someone who has been one, U would understand these are the guys that do most of the damage. That is my concern
PoliticsRe: Yorubas Littered With Homeless Beggars, All Children And Women by Uche2nna(m): 12:29am On Jan 26, 2009
Kobojunkie:
Sure, we can speak of it in religious context but I think the issue has crossed over to other areas at this time. I believe this problem is more than just a religious one.
Unless if the Christian sect of the Yorubas help in the dissemination of the almajiris, I still see it as a religious issue.

The Article was not written by the poster and there is this misconception that all Almajiri’s are Hausas. That is not the case at all. There are Yoruba muslims who live as those too.
That we know very well. The concept of almajiri is an Islamic thing. Its on the back of that knowledge that I believe that the title of the post is inflammatory given the kinda environment we have on NL

I have always brought up the almajiri issue in the context of religious riots. They are the cannon fodder for these riots. I agree that something has to be done.

As soon as a topic comes on, the tribal labels and insults start flying. Gosh!!!
I am with U on that one.

However, the title of the post was what threw me off in the first place. Then when I went thru the body of the article I saw where the author was heading to. But then the issue of almajiris is not an ethnic/tribal thing. We have almajiris all over the North. Why single out one tribe?
PoliticsRe: Yorubas Littered With Homeless Beggars, All Children And Women by Uche2nna(m): 11:47pm On Jan 25, 2009

I thot NL have gone beyond this tribal bashing?

Xavier.:
Ok I ll make it clearer. The few rich Yorubas, who have gotten their wealth either by looting our treasury or by exploiting the masses, have taken all their children abroad for education.
U can substitute Yoruba for Nigerians and U would still be right.

Xavier.:
These children rather mind their studies end up squandering the hard currencies on frivolious endeavours like drugs and partying. Consequently, millions back home are deprieved of education and end up on the street as urchins.
I would really want to know ur source of information. How did U come up with these conclusions?  undecided  I am asking these questions because the few Nigerian students that I know of are ranked very high in their classes. As of hard work and enthusiasm, they are as good as the Chinese. I still want to know where and how U meet these students that just party and do drugs?

Remember that the Bible talked about principalities and powers of this present darkness in high places. These are some of the powers being manifesed in Nigeria for your information lipsrsealed.
Ok, even if this is true why would one want to change into a goat when in danger? That is not too bright. The goat is not particularly known for its swiftness.

If I were a thief and on the verge of being apprehended, why would I want to change into a goat? undecided I would rather change to a bird and fly away, an ant and disappear from sight or even a snake and dare any officer that comes near. Changing to a goat makes no sense at all cheesy

The Police guys for there don dey eye that goat since. I sorry for the old woman that the goat belongs to.
SportsRe: John Mikel Obi Is Far Overrated! by Uche2nna(m): 12:58am On Jan 19, 2009
What u can say of Mikel right now U can easily say of the entire Chelsea midfield. Ballack is yet to be a big hit and my guess is that he would never be, Deco is already as ordinary as a midfielder in West brom. Lampard comes up with an odd goal or two but he is not really up to the standard he was last season.
Mourinho summarised it aptly when he said,,, I did not see Chelsea , I saw just Man U.

Having said that, i am really worried about Obi's future not only in Chelsea but in general. That guy is just going downhill like no man's business. Essien's injury presented a good opportunity for him to cement his place in that team. His performances a la the whole team makes fans clamour for Essien's recovery and return. He is sorely missed in that team. If and when Essien comes back, I dont see a place for Mikel in the starting line up. He would be lucky to end up like Olofinjana at Stoke city.

And the odds are not in his favours either. He started the last two matches for Chelsea but Chelsea were able to come up with the goals when he was substituted in those two matches. That makes me wonder.

i invest long term

U have just stated the three principles important for navigating the stock market but allow me to add two more.

Invest in companies U understand what they do.
Warren Buffet was averse to investing in technology stocks for a long time. "I dont understand what they do" he said.

Invest only what U can afford to lose (that is unless if U are an expert in the stock market).
It is really sad that people had to borrow money to pour into the stock market and I am sorry to hear that it back-fired but that might be one of the reasons why it crashed in the first place.

The bonobo allusion got me cracking up!!!!!  grin grin grin grin grin

But I would have to agree with debo. The Bonobos are primarily found in Congo and I dont think the Yorubas were aware of that when the word was coined.

Foreign AffairsRe: Answering Israel’s Critics by Uche2nna(m): 7:31pm On Dec 31, 2008
Anytime the issue of the US alliance with Israel comes up , religion is always thrown into the midst . That makes me wonder what religion we are talking about here,  is it Christianity or Judaism?  undecided

Obama's choice of a clergy for his inauguration is already drawing the ire of various sectors of the American community including the Jews. Their grouse,  the possiblity that Christ would be mentioned in the prayers.

So is the alliance really about religion or just politics? undecided
