It seems these ACN guys are on overdrive abi na turbo,am seriously liking this but please cultural symbolism and the economic implications of policies must be considered and given due attention, unlike someone who woke up one day and felt the only way to protect the naira is to ban spraying,it didn't work.
Okada maybe next
Let's take Ibadan back.

Politics / Re: Yoruba Groups Want Okada Banned In South West by Ufeolorun(m): 10:11am On Dec 01, 2012
I know how annoying it is hearing settlers arguing out history of the land with the natives and we also have seen shocking lack of introspection from a lot of the fluffy chest- beaters on this platform but there are millions of none natives who have embraced all that Lagos has to offer and are happy being part of its ongoing history,we should be careful not to isolate such people, they are Lagosians and worthy of all benefits.
They should be embraced wholeheartedly at least, this is what the same culture preaches.

The problem with a lot of these guys here is: they love Lagos so much but ironically unwilling to admit and embrace all that it stands for. They tend to forget there's no choice, you either embrace it or ship out !
All these stories about oil developing certain places are just stories and story it will remain.

Politics / Re: Chinua Achebe, Chimamanda Adichie And The Limits Of Art, By Kehinde Owolabi by Ufeolorun(m): 9:11pm On Nov 26, 2012
I call that the Achebe ‘Awolowo And Yoruba Hate Industry and Religion” Though, Adichie is a more contemporary Igbo writer, her narrative on Awolowo and the old Igbo narrative are the same conceptually and qualitatively. And that is the beginning of the problem with Adichie’s narrative. She managed to put a lot of writer’s style onto it basically to screen off the primary goal. But those melt off under serious analysis.
Your analysis here,is spot on and explains very well what jumped at me reading her essay.
She wrote; "Awolowo was undoubtedly a great political leader. He was also – rare for Nigerian leaders – a great intellectual. No Nigerian leader has, arguably, articulated a political vision as people-centered as Awolowo’s. For Nigerians from the west, he was the architect of free primary education, of progressive ideas"

That write-up gives her away as another intellectual utterly saturated with unsubstantiated talking points but afraid to state them clearly like her mentor, she probably know it's too early for her to start side lining a key literary constituency in Nigeria and this may explain her funny equivocations.

shymexx:

But Africans will never agree with your assertion, rather, they'll curse and swear at you, for looking-down-on-them... I think living-in-denial, fake-bigman, blame-game, and inferiority complex are also part of the major reasons why Africa/Africans will continue to lag behind in the grand scheme of things in the globalised world..
You often exhibit the typical attitude of black diasporeans : irredeemably spiteful of the establishment where their migrant parents bore them and at the same time going on about with the perception of Africa ,constructed by this same system.
For every "Nigeria" in Africa being shockingly run aground by utterly bottomless old men and women who love to ride posh cars on roads with pot holes, anchor yacht on dirty and unkempt waters and fly jet around an air space voted as one of the most unsafe, there are glimmers like Rwanda,Ghana,Bostwana.

Politics / Re: Obafemi Awolowo: When Will They Let The Name Go by Ufeolorun(m): 6:15pm On Nov 21, 2012
truth4meal: I wanted to cook an article on sth related to this post which is the thankless and churlish modus of an average Igbo man. Chief Obafemi Awolowo is respected and revered till today because Yorubas are grateful for his splendid lofty contribution towards the growth of SW and Nigeria. Lemme give u an example of how absolutely ungrateful an average Igbo man can be - November 16 happens to be the great Zik's birthday but its off-putting that only 3 pple wished that legend of a man - happy birthday and a dismaying 72 views. We don't treat our legends like dat in SW we venerate them because we believe their selfless contribution to our development can't be eroded by events.
Hmnn...
Most of the rantings and supposed anger we see here aren't really rooted in any strong ideological perceptions, inclinations or appreciation, they are just basic nl ego tripping and the penchant for circular, long winded arguements

I agree, deep offshore wells, should not belong to any state, but to all Nigerians.

This is similar to when countries find islands offshore, they do not belong to the nearest state, but to the whole country. Cases in point, France (French guyana, Guadeloupe etc), UK (Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, Montserat etc), USA (Guantánamo Bay etc). These offshore properties belong to the commonwealth.

Lucky dube,Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Brenda are/were some of Africa's greatest so they shouldn't be compared to all these pseudo-American, soggy musics being bandied around and promoted by Channel O.

Oumou Sangare of Mali won a grammy for her beautiful music last year, here we are going on about an award put together by some South African teenagers cheesy
Long live sensible indigenous musics.

Nothing oppressive about ensuring fairness.
I don't see how tenable claims can be made about hydrocarbon located far in the sea.
Derivation rights proceed from these well should go to fixing some federal institutions like the Nigerian police rather than making jet flying, billionaires out of some self serving creek war lords

Lol. Northern majority + SW = More Niger Delta oil money for looting.
Rather than encourage IGR and emphasis on utilising every region unique advantage, you are advocating further dependency on limited oil resources.

Anyway I expect nothing less from masters and slaves.
I don't know what you mean by "masters and slaves" but its senseless and unfair for carbon on the seabed of the country to be cornered by few using dubious claims.
Pursuing unique advantage and seeking for a fair share aren't mutually exclusive.

Funny enough common sense has no religious divide,it's universal. There's no way you can explain away how a pro government pastor got his private jet,its not about the end,its the means to it: a jet is no biggy but how it came about should concern any right thinker not burdened by Iroju raye.(confused mind)
The advent of One-man church has bitten badly into the image of christianity and I pray God put an end to the ravaging "Awa daddy syndrome"

Use your majority+SW reps, annul the offshore rule, give some exception base on distance .Hydrocarbon on the high sea should belong to all Nigerians.

ACN should not agree to the six states basis for regionalism, rights should be given to states to merge as they deem necessary. We could still add states like kwara, kogi,Niger to our fold.

Tinubu and his friends have shown they like talking more than acting anyway.

Career / Re: ICAN Stops Direct Conversion Of Foreign Qualifications by Ufeolorun(m): 11:37pm On Nov 09, 2012
hopeyemmy:

I bet you mean internal auditors, who perform auxiliary functions, not external(statutory and independent) auditors as it requires the seal of ICAN for any audit report to be accepted. If you say ANAN members can function as Auditors, what then is the implication of their exclusion from IFAC membership?
listen to the poster above, hes very right as long as Nigerian law allows ANNAN qualified accountants to do external audit,it has nothing to do with IFAC recognition. All i need to do is join ANNAN just for the practising certificates,my acca certificates provide the credibility i need to function.IFAC is basically a well recognised international association and they do not issue IFRS. but code of conducts mainly for auditors;they issue the ISAs on audit through IAASB.
Its a good move for ICAN , they need to give some more credibility to the professional body and build a fort against the rampaging onslaught of ACCA but it wont be enough. What has happened to the big audit misfiring that has been going on for so long in the country,ICAN cant always pretend nothing is happening, members must made to always uphold the ethics and sanctity of the profession :where are the auditors who audited the collapsed banks? what happened to them? credibility is the key word here not politics of survival.
On the academic side we cant function well without knowledge of the Nigerian tax laws and the gaap

This particular Nigerian gave an account of his stay in Nigeria. There were also Ghanians all over the country but Lagos will always have a huge chunk of them and Lagos is the closest Nigerian state to Ghana. While i was in Port-hacourt there were loads of Ghanians teachers.

Thank you for this heart warming account of our Nigeria, the Nigeria of Awolowo wink. I have heard the stories from my parent and i felt a abit of it growing up. My brothers couldn't stop showing their mates our passports indicating family holidays and visits to England (it was a big thing then ojare grin)I have close Ghanians friends and they tell me about their Nigerian stories and of friends and families but yours is more fascinating and well laid out.
I have been taunted with Omo alata, agege boi,Anogo pele pele o, grin cheesy, and i have always retorted ;it is not anogo its yoruba, anyways, "ese bondenche" (my favourite Ghanian word meaning-its up to you). You should add Orlando Owoh to the playlists cos i have a Ghanaian mate who has never been to Nigeria sing "Yellow sisi" by Orlando which he learnt from returnees.

wink wink wink wink

I do not have Gaap knowledge, mine has been strictly ifrs so I wouldn't be able to do a lot of comparison but the little I have seen,I can conclude: Apart from some name changes, gaaps and ifrs do not have much differences except on some high level treatments and criteria EG Goodwill amortisation under gaap and impairment review under ifrs.
Your credits still remain credits and debit remain a debit.

If you are a small business I don't think ifrs is that relevant to you except you r going big but there are IFRS for Smes though.

How I wish those who actually ran the company aground got the boot rather than these poor, lowly paid assistants.
That a company operates in your industry doesn't necessarily make it your competitor: what's the spread of the '300 staffed' company
Sacking lowly paid employees does not always make business sense, kicking out those who were expected to stir the affairs of the business into the future is far more strategic.

The bottom line is those who approve crappy contents, engage in political shenanigans and refuse to embrace new technology should get the boot first or else the company is likely to eventually die, even if they automate all their operations and have only one staff.

If after few months in Nigeria you are still confused about leaving the country then there's something you see or feel/perceive that majority here cannot.
looking at the comments, you reasonably shouldn't be confused-its obvious Nigeria is no option.
The thing is :if you had asked whether you should serve or not, the majority answer would probably be "No!, dont do it"
