I have never been this angry and disappointed at an embassy....its an obvious case of racism and discrimination. They wouldn't refuse an American or any other white person visa based on such ridiculous reasons. I wish I knew the schools, I would have applied from here in Canada(I'm a Canadian citizen of Nigerian descent), get the admission and funding, and of course easy study visa, and then I will decline the visa after issuance, with a strongly worded letter to the Australian immigration here, in solid solidarity with the OP. So sick of these embassies. actually, the embassies are sick of Nigerians flooding their gates |

Let's not go as far as lekki, you need to checkout some places at festac and GRA Ikeja The prices there are so exorbitant, you'll begin to wonder if you're in Nigeria. Let's talk about the roads, means of transportation, electricity, standard of education etc. The dude did not include all these. And to think that after paying so much, you still get sub standard services Running gen for just 8 hours a day will dig a hole Paying out of pocket for sub standard medical service will dig another hole How about the indirect cost to vehicle maintenance you pay due to terrible roads What about the cost of sub standard school |

naijaman3: Hmmn, I don’t know how you are doing your math. It looks to me that 7M Naira (or about CAD $25,000) per annum in Nigeria will be equivalent to maximum CAD $50,000 (or 14M Naira) in Canada taking tax and cost of living into consideration.
Your math is off because you did not take into consideration a lot of other things that you will spend money on while living in Nigeria but you don’t spend money on them in Canada. Some of the other things are:
Elementary and Secondary Education: In Canada, world class quality education is free from kindergarten to the end of high school. However, in Nigeria you know what you have to pay per term for schools that are not even as good as the free ones here in Canada.
Health and Medical: In Canada, you get this for free. However, in Nigeria you know what you have to pay for medical treatment at all the death center you call hospital. It is so bad that your yeyebrity (celebrity) that are believed to be making more than 7M Naira per annum run to social medial looking for help to cover hospital bills when they are sick.
Unemployment Benefit: If you lose your job in Canada due to no fault of yours you are entitled to government paid employment payment for between 14 weeks to 45 weeks. This is in additional to whatever severance pay that your company will pay you. What do you get from government in Nigeria if you lose your job due to no fault of yours? Nothing.
Government Pension: In additional to pension you get from your employer when you retire; you also get government paid pension monthly in Canada when you retire (You don’t need to work for the government to get this). What do you get from government in Nigeria when you retire? Nothing.
Old Age Security Payment: In Canada if you are 65 years and above you get paid Old Age Security payment irrespective of whether you have worked or never worked all your life. What do you get from government in Nigeria when you are old? Nothing.
You can argue that all of the above are not free because the government uses our tax to cover for these expenses. This is why our tax is a little high. But in Nigeria since you do not pay high taxes like we pay and you still need all of the above basic needs you have to pay for them or plan for them by yourself from your 7M Naira annual income. So, if you add high tax to your Canadian expenses, you also need to add the cost of all of the above to your Nigerian expenses.
Apart from the above items covered by our taxes, there are a couple of other items below that are extremely expensive in Nigeria compared to Canada:
Generator Running Expenses: Despite paying your NEPA bill, your power is not stable or not available at all. Hence you run your generator. In Canada, I don’t have to run a generator to live so the cost is zero. What is the cost of this per month or per year in Nigeria?
Tokunbo Car: The tokunbo car that you buy for about 2.24M Naira (CAD $8,000) in Nigeria will only cost me about CAD $2000 (N560,000 Naira) in Canada.
University and College Education: In Canada my kids have the following options available tom then in financing their education without me as a parent paying anything (government tuition grant not to be paid back, academic scholarship, part time work while schooling etc). In addition, they also get tax refund from tution and books etc but in Nigeria parents have to spend their live savings sending kids to the university.
There are more but I stop here for now!
Taking all of the above, all other cost of living and taxes into consideration, I would say that 7M Naira (or about CAD $25,000) per annum in Nigeria will be equivalent to maximum CAD $50,000 (or 14M Naira) in Canada. this is a good analysis |

Jabo1000: Why would somebody want to go inside cold when he’s living comfortably in Nigeria. 7m per year is more than 500k monthly that’s like earning cad $150k per annum in Canada taking consideration of cost of living and tax. it's not a bad idea if you look at the bigger picture |

Let us even assume it is 'clean money' he laboured for, in a legitimate manner. Are there not better things he can do for hi Umu Hometown? Can he not build schools? Can henot offe paid Scholarship to his neighbours, in his own clan (I am not even talking aboutother Nigerians)? Can he not come and build 100 2-Bed Bungalows and distribut eit for free, to all the widows and homeless in his town? Can he not tar or construct an express road to his own village?
But the idiot money-miss-road prefer to be making stupid and outlandish offers on the internet. Financial Poverty is a crime but POVERTY OF THE MIND is a worse EVIL what is this one saying? topdee: Really? First and foremost, America is literally a "no man's land": a significant majority of people in the US have been foreigners at some point (referring to the lineage). The infrastructure you talked about was built by foreigners.
In fact, many top tech companies in the US was founded/cofounded by foreigners who were once enrolled in school; in Silicon Valley majority of the people there are foreigners who were once on visas, some are still on visas. The booming real estates and housing is as a result of foreigners. Many of these same foreigners have better credibility than some US citizens (with reference to background checks, credit scores, criminal records, etc.).
Generally, Americans don't study past a bachelor's degree, many don't study past high school. Most of the professors in schools were once foreigners, and a large number of students in the top tier universities are even foreigners. Most people studying masters, MBA or PhD are foreigners. Without foreigners most university endowment in the US will be very low.
Most foreigners are even more law abiding than its citizens. Without foreigners US economy will be merely like that of Mexico.
Yes, I know many people abuse the visa, but a majority of Nigerians who attend school in the US with student visa excel academically, and whether you like it or not, these same students add value to the US economy when they get jobs (I'm referring to students enrolled in STEM programs). I know many people who got jobs in the US after school, worked for a while and after gaining valuable experience returned to Nigeria to setup their business.
Have you ever reasoned that some times in order to critically examine something, one needs a different exposure to cultivate a different mindset: corruption is looming in Nigeria, to the extent that the average Nigerian, who haven't probably left the shores of Nigeria, with the wit to boycott corruption might fail at it. International exposure could play a major role in tackling corruption in Nigeria.
The "hardship" you mentioned isn't anyone's choice (referring to the youth), but the foundation of which the economy was built on is the problem. At times, one may need to breathe a different air to see things from different perspective in order to solve problems. you got that right |

WritePal: His interest in the Rohinga people crisis in Myanmar is purely fueled by the fact that the supposedly persecuted group there are Muslims. If he hadn't been a soldier or politician, Buhari probably would have been an imam. He's so religiously and ethnically shortsighted it colors everything he says and does. That's why his advisers tell him to talk less so he doesn't spill his intolerance every time.
No matter how his paid promoters here hail him, these parts of him will always betray him and make him consistently unattractive to broadminded people like us. History will remember him more for his acute, unhidden ethnic and religious biases more than anything. It was grave error electing a bigot in the first place.
His electoral appeal is mainly to close-minded people who are mainly moved by ethnic and religious sentiments plus financial gains (like the paid BMC crowd) rather than clear ideology and development plans. And they are masses of them everywhere. If we had a more educated, enlightened populace with independent minds, Buhari can never come even third in a presidential election. exactly |
