Now that the F.C. Barcelona vs F.C. Liverpool face-off in the Phillipe Coutinho transfer saga seem to have come to an end (at least for now), some hitherto unknown details are beginning to filter out of the press in Spain.

One of such is a report emanating from Spanish TV show El Chiringuito, who claim that Juventus star, Paulo Dybala was twice offered to the La Liga giants. The report claimed that F.C. Barcelona were so desperate to sign Philippe Coutinho that they turned down the chance to buy Paulo Dybala.

it is no longer news that Barcelona went all out for Phillipe Coutinho’s signature this summer as a result of the departure of Brazil team-mate Neymar to PSG. But despite the fact that the 25-year-old handed in a transfer request, his current team blatantly refused him the chance to leave for the Nou Camp before the Spanish transfer window closed last Friday night thereby ensuring that F.C. Barcelona ended up missing out on their top target of the transfer window.

El Chiringuito went on to reveal the fact that F.C. Barcelona were twice given the chance to sign Dybala instead, first of all for £110m (€120m) but they snubbed those offers to focus all of their attention on signing Phillipe Coutinho.

Some other unconfirmed reports however attributed all of that to the fact that “Barcelona were concerned that Paulo Dybala and Lionel Messi could not play together, according to Jugones”. That however sounds funny and unbelievable since both Lionel Messi and Paulo Dybala play together in the Argentinian National Football Team.

After enjoying a 4-0 demolition of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroun just a few days back, the Super Eagles face the uphill task of holding their own once again against the same team away from home later this evening.

Lawn Tennis Diva Serena Williams has scored another winner as she gave birth to a bouncing baby girl on Friday at St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach in the United States Of America.

The already famous baby girl reportedly weighs 6 pounds, 13 ounces. A reliable source at the hospital informed our correspondent that both baby and mother are in very good condition.

Serena was admitted to the St Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach on Wednesday where she later put to birth. She is in such a good condition after the event that she is already planning to return to tennis for the Australian Open in January.

Meanwhile, lots of accolades and congratulatory messages have been pouring in from her ardent fans, family members, prominent sports stars and celebrities.

Serena’s senior sister Venus got the good news as she prepared to go out on court at the US Open and this is what she had to say;

The great soccer wizard, Lionel Messi has once again proved his fans right as he again showed why he is head and shoulders above all his competitors on and off the soccer pitch. Just a few hours ago, this young man of indescribable qualities was walking into his hotel surrounded by bodyguards when he noticed a young fan being forcibly removed from the scene.

As to be expected of such a humble guy, Lionel Messi simply refused to go in and asked for the fan who was already in tears of disappointment to be brought back to him. Messi said; “No, no, that is not cool” as he noticed what was happening.

Lionel Messi, seeing the boy being led away in tears, demanded that the child be brought back and thereafter hugged the lucky fan as well and posed for a series of photos with the lucky fan.

The emphatic 4-0 win of the Super Eagles over Cameroun yesterday evening is still reverberating all over Nigeria as celebrations continued right up to this morning in many parts of the country.

Many people have also had a lot to say about the implications of that superlative win that will go down in memory lane as one of the best moments of Nigeria’s Soccer History.

Immediate past President of Nigeria described the win as a unifying factor for Nigerians and thanked the Super Eagles for always bringing Nigerians together through soccer.

His former adviser, Reno Omokri while congratulating the Super Eagles in the same vein (serving as a unifying factor for Nigerians), however added his own twist to it by taking a jibe at the present Nigerian President, Mohammadu Buhari.

It was a Friday evening to remember in Uyo, Akwa-Ibom, Nigeria for the home fans and the rest across the country and abroad as the Super Eagles of Nigeria virtually more or less qualified themselves for the 2018 World Cup coming up in Russia as they demolished reigning African Champions Cameroun by a whopping four goals to one.

This Super Eagles team was surely heads and shoulders above the ones that lost to South Africa on the same pitch some weeks back. As a matter of fact, this team seemed to have come to the stadium to “cleanse” it of the “sins” committed by their compatriots earlier on and “anoint” the stadium for future games.

The game itself was a beauty to watch especially if you are a Nigerian or supporter of the Super Eagles as they reminded everyone watching of the stuff the “Real Super Eagles” were and are made of when they mean business.

The returning trio of Odion Ighalo, John Mikel Obi, Victor Moses in that order scored very important goals to ensure that nothing was left to chance before a certain Kelechi Iheanacho came on from the bench to complete the job done by his “senior brothers”.

It all started on a bright note as the Super Eagles were put in front as early as the 29th minute by Odion Ighalo who connected with a superb pass from captain John Mikel Obi and slotted home a nerve-relaxing goal.

It was then the turn of captain fantastic John Mikel Obi to register his name on the goals chart for the evening as he scored from a corner kick taken by Victor Moses just before the break.

Moses refused to be left out of the goals feast as he scored a sweet goal after a solid combination of passes with Moses Simon in the 55th minute.

If the Camerounians still had some hopes of turning this game around, all of that was dashed as new Leicester City signing, Kelechi Iheanacho came from the bench to add his own contribution to the win by heading home a cross from Ogenyi Onazi late in the game.

This superlative win ensured that the Super Eagles remain at the top of Group B with nine points while Cameroon have just two after three matches.

When the Eagles are complete and have a "common sense of purpose", winning becomes so easy. A lesson to all Nigerians generally. We can achieve a whole lot more generally. Life can be real interesting sometimes.

Liverpool F.C., a club that is ready to do anything to block its players from leaving for other teams even when the players concerned have declared their intention to leave the team, is busy comfortably buying players from other teams without batting an eye-lid.

They not only agreed a fee for the signing of Keita from Leipzig (he will join them in some months’ time), they have now successfully signed a player from a direct competitor for the British Premier League crown – Arsenal F.C.

The player in question is no other than Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who underwent a medical at St George’s Park last night. He is believed to have signed a five-year contract worth around £120,000-a-week with Liverpool.

Some armed soldiers recently received the beatings of their lives from an angry Mob during a protest in Lome, Togo. The soldiers had gone to shoot two persons dead, an action that got the rest of the protesters really angry and consequently made them to attack the soldiers in a do or die battle.

The angry protesters went on to seize the Ak-47 rifles belonging to the soldiers and attacked them with sticks and sharp objects.

Monday the 28th day of August, 2017 was a real “hot day” in India as a court sentenced the popular but controversial spiritual leader Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh to a total of 20 years in jail for raping two women followers.

Gurmeet has been in police custody in the Indian northern town of Rohtak since his conviction took place on Friday.

Even though the sentencing was done amid intense security, this did not stop thousands of his supporters from setting fire to numerous vehicles and clashing with security forces, in a situation that has so far left 38 dead, in the northern state of Haryana.

All of this happening despite the fact also that more than 100 of Singh’s senior loyalists have been placed in detention as a precautionary measure, said Rohtak police chief Navdeep Singh Virk.

He said his officers would use “whatever force is required” to resist the guru’s devotees should they again resort to violence. The Police Chief went on to say that; “If the situation so arises that (we) need to use firearms, my officers have complete authority,” the police chief told broadcaster NDTV.

A judge was flown by helicopter to sentence the 50-year-old spiritual leader known as the “guru in bling” for his penchant for bejewelled costumes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already condemned the violence even though his ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, which is also in power in Haryana, has been criticised for failing to anticipate the riots.

For those of you who follow World News closely, I believe that you must have heard about the various natural disasters going on around the world for sometime now and how the various governments have been responding to their peoples’ needs at such critical times.

I honestly hope that that the various arms of the Nigerian Government are not just watching the scenes on television like a Nollywood Movie but are actually learning how to correctly govern a country in a bid to make it greater.

I have neither heard nor seen from those reports anything like what is happening in Nigeria where it is more important for members of the House Of Assembly to hustle for a car worth “millions of naira” while the people in their constituencies are dying from avoidable natural disasters.

And as far as our military arm is concerned, I hope they watch the video clips on what is happening in Macao right now. They will see how the PLA (Chinese Soldiers) have become the toast of the civilian populace as they have come to their rescue by helping the people overcome the effects of a recent storm that virtually brought life activities to a halt.

These soldiers have not only restored sanity by clearing debris, wastes, garbage and done a whole lot more in order to have water, electricity and free transportation restored to Macao but have also become a source of pride to the locals, some of whom confessed that they never expected such acts from the PLA. Some others confessed that they have never seen the soldiers live on the streets before now.

Now comparing all of that to the situation in Nigeria where we only hear about our own soldiers when they extort innocent motorists, get involved in rape cases and other related criminal acts, is it still difficult to understand why a nation like Nigeria is lagging behind countries such as Benin Republic in terms of developmental strides?

And why won’t “RATS” send away the President of Nigeria from his office in the Aso Rock Villa?

The two arguably best football players in the world for some years now, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi met in Monaco at the UEFA’s Best Player awards Ceremony and had some discussions on football generally and specifically about the crisis at F.C. Barcelona.

After all the days of disappointing news here and there, some good news have finally arrived as Barca succeeds in signing Ousmane Dembélé from Borussia Dortmund after a hectic time negotiating the deal which saw the player forcing his way out of his former club.

FC Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund finally reached an agreement for the transfer of Ousmane Dembélé for around 105 million euros plus some add-ons.

The player is expected to sign a five year contract with his buy out-clause is put at some 400 million euros. This surely shows how much the Catalonian Giants value their latest acquisition.

Ousmane Dembélé is expected to arrive in Barcelona on Sunday when he is scheduled to undergo a medical on Monday morning local time after which more details of the plans for the player’s presentation to the waiting Nou Camp fans scheduled for Monday, will be made public.

The President of the United States, Donald Trump has been described as “a danger to the world”. This ordinarily would not have raised any dust but for the fact that this claim is coming from a group of Psychiatrists in the United States Of America.

‘It no longer takes a psychiatrist to recognise the alarming patterns of impulsive, reckless, and narcissistic behaviour,’ the group claims. The group in a letter sent to the Congress further warned that the US President poses a “clear and present danger” to the world.

A member of the group, Dr Bandy Lee, of Yale University, says she is very concerned about Donald Trump’s “dangerousness”.

According to the group, “It no longer takes a psychiatrist to recognise the alarming patterns of impulsive, reckless, and narcissistic behaviour — regardless of diagnosis — that, in the person of President Trump, put the world at risk.

It went further to say that “We now find ourselves in a clear and present danger, especially concerning North Korea and the President’s command of the US nuclear arsenal.”
This is coming after the creation of an 11-member, cross-party Oversight Commission on Presidential Capacity which would be responsible for examining the US president’s mental and physical health. More than two dozen members of the House have now backed the bill which would see Mr Trump or any other US president forced from the Oval Office is he or she is deemed to be mentally or physically unfit for the role.

Very Good News for all fans of Manchester United! Mercurial Striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has signed a one-year deal to play for the team once again. He will wear the number 10 shirt for the team as he “tries to complete what he started at ManU” according to him.

Some level of good news for ardent F.C. Barcelona fans at long last after days and weeks of disappointing news concerning transfer targets Coutinho and Dembele.

The Catalan Soccer Giants have reportedly agreed a four-year contract with Jean-Michael Seri, the dimunitive Ivorian midfielder who currently plies his trade at Nice in the French Ligue 1.

F.C. Barcelona officials are now being expected in France on Monday to open talks with the Management of Nice in relation with the transfer deal. Nice values Seri to be worth about €40million.

Some other reports have it that the player’s agent is already in Barcelona to finalize details of his client’s move to the Nou Camp.

The F.C. Barcelona Manager Ernesto Valverde is bent on getting a proper replacement for former Barca player Neymar, who left for Paris Saint-Germain in a world-record move.

However, Seri who stood out in his team’s games last season on their way to qualifying for this year’s Champions’ League is seen in many quarters as more of a defensive mid-fielder.

NPFL Table Leaders, Plateau United got their lead cut to three points ahead of MFM at the week-end as they bowed 0-2 to an ABS team that is desperately struggling to escape relegation from Nigeria’s First Tier Football.

The closest challengers for the League Title, MFM narrowly defeated another relegation threatened team, Gombe United by a solitary goal at the Agege Stadium in Lagos. The 1-0 win was however all they needed to get closer to the Table Toppers with just three points now separating both teams.

The Nigerian Home-Based Eagles yesterday over-turned their first leg 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Republic Of Benin team by beating the visitors by a convincing 2-0 at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano and thereby qualified for next year’s Africa Nations Championship.

The two goals came courtesy the boots of Kingsley Eduwo and Rabiu Aliu as the hosts overran the hapless visiting team from the Benin Republic.

The game itself had earlier on looked like it was going to be another bad one for the home team as the visitors were awarded a penalty kick but then the Nigerian goal-stopper, Ikechukwu Ezenwa rose to the occasion to deny the visitors a goal by saving Sidoubou’s penalty kick to the applause of the home fans.

With this victory, the Home-Based Eagles can conveniently start preparations for their participation in the 2018 Africa Nations Championship taking place in Kenya.

After spending some 103 days away from home and office, President Muhammadu Buhari finally returned to Nigeria today, Saturday (19th August, 2017) from London, United Kingdom where he had been receiving medical treatment.

Dozens of state officials were present at the airport to receive him as the Nigerian Air-force plane carrying President Buhari touched down at the Abuja international airport this evening.

At the airport to welcome the president were members of the National Assembly, Service Chiefs, The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, as well as other presidential aides.

Also at the Airport were some state governors such as  Abubakar Bello of Niger, Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano, Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi, Nyeson Wike of Rivers, Muhammed Abubakar of Bauchi, Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara and the Deputy governor of Kaduna state, Barnabas Bala.

Equally present on the occasion were the National Security Adviser to the President (NSA), Babagana Monguno; the Director-General, State Security Service, SSS, Lawal Daura, and some other dignitaries.

President Buhari who appeared in a traditional attire with a cap, took a national salute from the Presidential Guards Brigade while cultural groups were on hand to sing and dance to welcome him back home. He later rode in a motorcade to the presidential villa. 

According to Buhari's media aides, he is expected to speak to Nigerians in a broadcast on Monday at 7 a.m.

It is surely not the best of times for people living in and around Barcelona. The soccer team of recent has not had the best of times especially in their Spanish Super Cup games against Real Madrid after losing a certain Neymar Jnr. to PSG and here they are on the receiving end of a terrorist attack.

Just yesterday (Thursday the 17th August, 2017), a driver deliberately drove a van into a crowd on Barcelona’s most popular street in what police said was a “terror attack” and in what also reminds one of the Charlottesville attack in the United States of America only a few days ago.

Already, some 13 people have been confirmed dead with a whole lot more (about 100 as at the last count) are injured and being treated for various degrees of injury. The five attackers operated from an Audi A3, wearing suicide bomb belts and were shot dead, police said. The bomb belts were detonated by the force’s bomb squad.

The city’s soccer giants, the Barcelona Football Club on Thursday evening expressed their heartfelt condolences to the families of victims of the terror blasts that hit the city.

The attack has left the world in total shock at another senseless but ruthless attack by terror groups, and FC Barcelona released a statement Thursday evening on how they intend to honor the victims.

“FC Barcelona wishes to express its profound sorrow, grief and utter disgust at the terrorist attack that has hit the heart of our city, la Rambla de Barcelona,” a statement on the club’s website reads.

F.C. Barcelona will start the 2017/18 La Liga season against Betis on Sunday. The Camp Nou plans to hold a minute silence in recognition and memory of the victims.

“As a mark of respect, the flags will fly at half-mast at all of the Club’s installations and the players from both teams will wear black armbands in all the Club’s matches this weekend.”

“The Club wishes to express our support and thoughts to the victims, their families and friends as well as the people of Barcelona and its visitors.” The statement further said.

Sometimes I wonder if up to 99 % of my people in Nigeria know anything about the term “Democracy”. That includes the governing class, by the way. If you cannot take constructive criticism, you have no business leading a family talk less of a country.

Closely related to the thought above is that of the difference between a Military Rule and a Civilian one. The whole thing is so mixed up and bastardized that I wonder why some people still blame our young ones for not performing well at school. What examples are the leaders giving to them? They do not realize that the best way to teach a child is by example. I am very sorry for those people in the teaching profession and that includes “My Honorable Self”.

Back to the issue at hand however. It is not news that for some days now, there are two opposing groups camping in the nations’s capital and protesting the issue concerning the fact that Nigeria’s President Buhari has been away from home for some 100 days on sick leave. While a group is asking for him to come home or resign, another is pro Buhari and saying that he has the right to stay away on sick leave for as long as is necessary.

However the hitherto peaceful convergence of the two groups in a place not far from one another has suddenly taken a violent turn as the leader of the anti-Buhari group, Charles Oputa aka Charly Boy, was almost sent on an unscheduled errand to his Creator by a mob made up of supporters of the president yesterday.

The incident itself has negatively affected the lives of other non-participating citizens as it has now led to the closure of the Wuse Market with innocent traders now locked out of their shops. This is all happening in the very capital city of Nigeria, Abuja where the so-called leaders of the country hold sway and are resident.

Reports reaching our News Desk has it that the whole problem started when the anti-Buhari protesters known with the #Our Mumu Don Do group led by its leader, Charly Boy, took their protest to the market and were subsequently confronted by the pro-Buhari group. This of course led to a free-for-all fight, with stones and all manner of objects flying from different directions like bullets.

How did all of that happen? A reliable source said that before the whole issue started, Charly Boy and his group were turned back at the main gate of the market on arrival by the leader of the market task force. This naturally led to an argument that ensued between the two groups, culminating in the pro-Buharists swooping on Charly Boy and other co-protesters.

The mob consisting of various elements in the area who were said to be chanting “Sai Baba, Sai Baba” allegedly attacked Charly Boy’s group with stones and sticks, saying that they have no right to bring their protest to the market. However, a co-convener of “Resume or Resign” movement, Mr. Deji Adeyanju, informed journalists that it was not true that the group went to the market to protest.

He explained that some of the leaders of the group went to the market to see one of their coordinators who owns a shop in the market only to be attacked by the hoodlums. “Yes, our group was attacked by some hoodlums in the market. We only went there to see one of our coordinators and not for protest. Right now, some of our members are wounded and Charly Boy’s BMW bike was damaged by the hoodlums”, he said.

Going by all of the above, is it really correct to say that Nigeria is operating a democracy? If such things can happen at the seat of government without any preventive measures in place, what would happen when such take place anywhere else in the country? Where was the Police Force when all of these were taking place? What measures have our so-called leaders taken since the beginning of the protest actions to fore-stall the violence eventually took place?

Oh sorry friends, I forgot that not all of them have gotten the cars (worth millions of naira each) that they allocated to themselves and are still busy handling that issue which is of more national importance.

This otherwise talented and hard-working footballer is fast destroying all his hard work with childish displays that will get him nowhere but down. This particular aspect of him is the major difference between Lionel Messi and him. Interestingly, he is the older of the two.

If Cristiano Ronaldo was to be a Nigerian, I am very sure people would by now have been tracing his problems to his village and family members (extended and immediate) as well as witch craft. He would have gotten recommendations to go for “Spiritual Cleansing” somewhere along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in December.

On a more serious note, it is difficult to sometimes understand the actions of this otherwise mega-talented footballer. What for an example, did he gain by imitating Lionel Messi’s “Shirt Showing” gesture in a game Real Madrid was comfortably winning?

Worse still, what in the name of all things football made a soccer star of his level shove a referee in the back in a match being watched by millions (if not billions) of people all over the world?

Just in case he has not yet rendered a public apology to that referee and his club’s teeming supporters, close friends of his should please advise him to do so asap.

We do not wish to see a soccer star of his stature and level go down in shame after sacrificing so much towards the growth of football by way of the amount of hard work he has put into becoming one of the very best of footballers in the world.
