Then you missed the ultimate point of my missive...which, while defending religion...also points out the fact that development is based on a lot of other factors.

50-80 years ago, these countries were developed...and also very religious. Infact, many of these countries were religious during the industrial revolution.

Gay rights is a recent phenonenom. (Many European countries only got gay rights when they were long developed. Heck, Japan had gay rights in the 1950's...Europe has caught up in the 1990's. UK got there in 1968 ).

Again these are recent trends. Plus...Christianity was growing too...from 5% in 1962 TO 27 percent today.

Besides, the South's development has a lot to do with lack of natural resources and defensive purposes, plus a Confucian influenced ethos regarding education.

And then there is the US which has a high proportion of religious people. In Africa , we have South Africa that is very developed...and has high proprtions of religousity even among the white people

And throughout the Industrial revolution, most European countries were religious. Many inventors of the stuff you use were religious (Faraday who made inventions that advanced electricity was religious. As was they guy who developed anesthesia)

But to me, a country's development is not based on religion or lack of it...it is based on whether a country is willing to work hard for it. Here in Nigeria, we are poor and underdeveloped because most people have a daily bread mentality which prevents long term thinking. Many European countries are developed because they lacked enough natural resources....and had harsh climates...which meant you had to adapt or not survive (That's why they developed the theory of evolution over there...heheheh...too much adapting!). IN Nigeria, we think that we have lotsa natural resources that we can sell for money, and use to import stuff we can enjoy life with...and that makes things harder for us.

If Nigeria wants to develop,we have to work hard for it. But in a country where people somehow expect us to magically have everything the developed countries have because...we has oil..which isn't even earning us enough cash anymore.....we have a long way to go. Atheism won't change much if we adopted it.
I beg u in the name of God , pls ,don't say South Africa is developed .

South Africa that 2 percent of the people control about seventy percent of the wealth.

It's kind of amazing that since that time till now , we are still yet to shed this useless " self sufficiency " argument.

It even gets sad when u see the nonsense championed by the finance minister chief festus.

The night before the meeting [Commonwealth conference], Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, whom I had visited two years before, gave us a banquet in the hotel. Raja and I were seated opposite a hefty Nigerian, Chief Festus, their finance minister. The conversation is still fresh in my mind. He was going to retire soon, he said. He had done enough for his country and now had to look after his business, a shoe factory. As finance minister, he had imposed a tax on imported shoes so that Nigeria could make shoes. Raja and I were incredulous. Chief Festus had a good appetite that showed in his rotund figure, elegantly camouflaged in colorful Nigerian robes with gold ornamentation and a splendid cap. I went to bed that night convinced that they were a different people playing by a different set of rules.

Interesting thread.

Lee Kuan Yew in his book From Third World to First mentioned at the start of this thread, recounts encounters with African leaders, including those that occurred during a Commonwealth conference hosted in Lagos in early January 1966. Perhaps we can find therein a few clues to our predicament - from his perspective, at least:

7 things GDP numbers tell us about Buhari’s reelection bid

February 12

by Mayowa Tijani

On Tuesday, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) released the gross domestic product (GDP) numbers, showing a 1.93 percent growth in the Nigerian economy for the year 2018.

Financial analysts, public commentators, local and foreign media, and opposition bigwigs have said repeatedly that President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has done poorly with the revival of the economy.

Former president Olusegun Obasanjo, who is fiercely opposed to Buhari’s reelection, went as far as saying Buhari is weak on the economy, after over a year in economic recession.

Obasanjo added that a change of the current administration will birth “a government that will improve the economy, regain the confidence of investors and generally drive growth”.

TheCable reviews seven things the GDP numbers say about President Buhari and his re-election bid.

1. BUHARI IS REVIVING AGRICULTURE — FOR REAL

Buhari and Emefiele

President Buhari promised to revive agriculture, and diversify the Nigerian economy. His government, in partnership with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) launched the Anchor’s Borrowers Programme (ABP) to empower smallholder farmers in the country.

The GDP numbers show that Buhari’s plan in agricuture has been working — beyond the rhetoric, as agriculture now contributes over three times more to the Nigerian economy, than oil does.

“Four activities make up the Agricultural sector: Crop Production, Livestock, Forestry and Fishing. sector grew by 18.58% year-on-year in nominal terms in Q4 2018, showing an increase of 8.45% points from the same quarter of 2017,” the NBS report read.

Crop Production remains the major driver of the sector, accounting for 89.84% of nominal agriculture GDP. On an annual basis, agriculture GDP grew by 14.27%, higher than 11.29% recorded in 2017, The sector contributed 23.08% to nominal GDP in Q4 2018 , which is higher than its contribution in Q4 2017”.

There are evidence of growth in virtually every part of the agriculture sector, despite the floods recorded in the year under review.
bid
Is it just me or isn't agriculture meant to be contributing a smaller portion to gdp as services and industry rises ?

Automation does not pose much of a threat to African countries as they are still quite poor. Wages are therefore still low and therefore no pressing need to automate in order to become competitive.

China can no longer rely on cheap labour as labour is no longer cheap. That is why it is turning automation. Mexico for instance is now the cheapest place to produce goods headed for the US.

China is now an upper middle income country and now needs brain power rather than brawn to grow to achieve rich world status.Thankfully, it seems to have a well educated population hence should scale this stage of development. Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore were able to become advanced nation's because of a well educated workforce.

Thailand on the other hand is stuck in the middle income trap. It's workforce is not well educated. It is even presently ruled by a military dictatorship.
If their fellow Chinese people in Hong Kong , Taiwan , Macau and Singapore could have become so developed , then surely China can do this to.

But if I may ask, why is their economy cooling ?

Is it solely because of rising labor costs ?

When the Japanese economy was booming in the 1980's, this was how magazines wrote wonderfully about it and maligned America and it's system. Businessweek even in an early 1990's editorial suggested that American companies embrace the Keiretsu conglomerate system.

Then, Japanese were buying American assets such as prime real estate such as the Rockefeller center in New York and golf courses.

Despite all these, America out of the 120 critical technologies available controlled 43, Japan 34 and the rest of the globe shared the rest.

In 1991 or so, the bubble in Japan burst and the economy has never been the same again. It began suffering from a huge bank bad debt problem that took it over a decade to confront and eliminate.

It also started suffering massive budget deficits that still plagues it till today. It's public debt is over 200% of GDP!

It's also perennially plagued with deflation and under Kobenomics (the Japanese prime Minister name is Kobe) is now expanding money supply to boost inflation. (Deflation is disliked by economists as it discourages investment. Imagine that you intend to buy a plot of land but heard that prices of land in that neighborhood never appreciates but even goes down. Will you buy?)

Things aren't this fantastic in China.

Also, those over praising China must take to mind a Chinese adage that says, "Money hides a thousand imperfections)

Where China gets the money to build it's transport infrastructure has always amazed me. I can understand the road network is financed through tolling. The money trains and bridges however don't add up. Many are bridges to nowhere.

Also, the trains are heavily subsidized.

Also critics should remember that China's per Capital income is only about a seventh of America's so things are bound to be cheaper. However, many companies are reconsidering China due to rising cost of production. Many Nigerians have left China as being a middleman isn't no longer that lucrative as China's goods aren't as cheap as they once were.

China will one day over take the USA all things being equal.

However, the US is resilient and despite it's shortcomings should never be written away. Naysayers should learn from America and Japan in the 1980's
Some analysts said that this is also due to the rise of automation. The question is that if automation is rising , what then becomes the fate of African countries that hope to attract fdi inorder to industrialise ?

If Jonathan couldn't save during the time of plenty and was already borrowing, how woukd he have carried on during this crude oil price recess?

I was coming from mainland in Lagos last week Friday, my car broke down going back home.

Got fixed after 3 hours, I decided to go get some good food and drink. Drove past Toyin Ikeja, a beautiful girl caught my attention, I can tell she's a runs girl but she damn look clean and beautiful.

After intense negotiation she settled for 3000, took me to a hotel she already paid for (she already paid 5k for whole night) I did 2 quick round and honestly she tried to get me ready for the 3rd round. I asked why is she generous ? She said her friend just message her police are picking girls on the street so she's not going back outside until maybe towards day break. (2 am that time).

I ended up begging her to let me go towards the morning time when my battery was zero.

Why rape a girl when Olosho full everywhere especially Lagos ?
I don't think people rape because of there is no olosho , I think they rape because they derive a sadistic sense of fulfilment when they see women struggle and suffer.

Christianity EtcMassacre At Beziers by urahara(op): 10:16pm On Feb 07, 2019
Massacre at Béziers, (21–22 July 1209). This brutal massacre was the first major battle in the Albigensian Crusade called by Pope Innocent III against the Cathars, a religious sect. The French city of Béziers, a Cathar stronghold, was burned down and 20,000 residents killed after a papal legate, the Abbot of Cîteaux, declared, "Slaughter them all!"

ALBIGENSIAN CRUSADE EVENTS
1
2
The Cathars—also known as "Albigensians" after the French town of Albi, sometimes identified as their headquarters—were "dualists," meaning that they believed in two gods: a greater embodiment of goodness and a less powerful evil deity that created the world. Emerging in 1000–50, they established their own church in c. 1140 and by the late twelfth century had eleven bishops in France and Italy with a large number of followers in the Languedoc region of southern France. Cathars denied the divinity of Christ and the authority of the pope; the Roman Catholic Church declared them heretics in 1176.

Pope Innocent III sent preachers to convert the Cathars, but called a crusade after his legate, Pierre of Castelnau, was killed in January 1208. Many were attracted to the crusade by Innocent’s declaration that they would be entitled to keep any land seized from heretics. In 1209 the 10,000-strong crusade army gathered in Lyon and marched south under command of another papal legate, Arnaud Amalric, Abbot of Cîteaux. Arriving at Béziers, the crusaders called for the surrender of the Cathars and local Catholics. The defenders of the city made a sortie to attack the besieging army, but were overwhelmed and the crusaders poured through the open gates of the city. The abbot wrote to the pope, "The city was put to the sword. So did God’s vengeance give vent to its wondrous rage." Nevertheless, Cathar resistance remained strong elsewhere and the crusade lasted twenty years.

Losses: Albigensian, and citizens, 20,000; Crusader, minimal of 10,000.

That's why things are not better.

PoliticsRe: Nigeria’s Tax To GDP Ratio, the Lowest Among Global Biggest Economies by urahara(m): 12:22am On Feb 05, 2019
grandstar:
The tax cuts actually make fantastic economic sense.

India found out that as it lowered taxes for instance, revenue increased as tax compliance increased. What matters most is the tax base and not the tax rate.

Atiku plans to slash company taxes to the lowest in Africa. This will great fuel compliance but most importantly it will boost massive foriegn investments into Nigeria creating lots of lots and boosting economic growth. It also boosts investment by domestic investors.

China, Singapore and Ireland we're very dependent on foreign investments to get to where they are today and they all used low taxes to varying degrees to lure them in.

So, Atiku's tax reduction will greatly boost tax receipts and not reduce it as people will be readier to pay taxes than before.

Less than 1% of Nigerian companies declare their true profits. They are unprepared to give 37% (if you include 2% education tax) of their profits to the treasury. Simply increasing compliance levels to 10% will great boost government's books.

The main reason for the tax reduction is really to boost growth. Economic growth last year was a lamentable 1.81%. The country needs growth rates of 7% to create enough jobs yearly to absorb those entering the labour force yearly.

The slash in company taxes and a merger of the exchange rates should achieve economic growth rates of up to 7% yearly .
How is it that many African countries e.g Ghana have huge informal sectors but yet have a tax to gdp ratio of close to 20 percent or 15 percent ?
