Politics / The Future Awards: A Parody Of Nigerian Vanities? by vikiviko(m): 12:37pm On Jan 31, 2009
It wasn't really curiosity that killed the cat; it was the car. Perhaps the cat got pretty excited chasing that fuzzy looking ball - which had captured its curiosity - across the road that it didn't notice the car coming along in a hurried screeching pace. So the cat died, with the fuzzy looking ball now well out of its reach, but fortunately, in the hope of a happy ending, cats do have nine lives, but we on the other hand have got only one. And in the reality of a not-so-happy ending, in Nigeria we don't even have lives to live. We survive; and now we have a fuzzy looking ball tapping along the horizon of time into a foggy destination, and it seems we have gotten our tails locked inside a cultural frenzy that keeps us hopping after the fuzzy looking ball, into a destination unknown.

We all know that in Nigeria, we don't have the luxury of vehicles crushing us when we miss our way. Rather, what we have here are freight trains; the creeping line of military dictatorship, the busy line of corruption, the speeding line of human rights violation, the crowded line of poverty, to mention a few (we have been limited by corporate privacy laws of these booming businesses), all crushing generations and generations of great Nigerians, both known and unknown, from the past to the present and on they are on their merry way to the future. How interesting is it for our readers to observe that most of these trains have already arrived at the future and some of them have begun a return trip back to the present hoping to crush generations trying to rise from the ashes of the past. And what are we doing in anticipation of the inevitable recurrence of this looming catastrophe of daunting astronomical proportions? We are having a party!

Yes dear reader, in the midst of this dreadful quagmire, we are having a party. Perhaps we are taking the whole positive attitude thing a little too far. We celebrate a future of which we haven't the slightest idea how it will truly be (well, intrinsically, many of us still believe we are headed for doom, but no negative thinking here). We celebrate a projection, an assumption of a future we have no blueprint for. And then we give awards to ‘successful’ individuals; most of whom have no idea or a plan on how Nigeria's future should be. Sadly, in this country, we are yet to understand that although a man may have achieved material success, praise is only due when he effects positive changes into his environment and the nation as a whole. How much of his success has he diffused into the society he lives in and buys his success from? And by such, we do not mean “birthday-ly” visits to the orphanages with gifts, food and money (well video-taped into award winning documentaries and covered by media houses or blogged about on our international grapevine: Facebook). No! We mean a proactive alteration of the present in order to lay the foundation for a future that can hold promises. Having a successful business or living a materially successful life cannot and will not do that.

Thus, The Future Awards is a fanciful parade of dull vanities. At its best, it is yet a well celebrated excuse for another gathering for Rice and Stew Very Plenty (RSVP) – a well rehearsed performance that thrives on the recognition of wannabe celebrity cliques and young Nigerians who are obsessed with becoming the Visible-In-Public (VIP). What are we celebrating? Have we achieved so much in this present that the future is the only “thing” left worth celebrating? We are yet to begin true democracy; have a transparent government that is truly for the masses. We are yet to have in place a system that truly works thus deleting from our ambitions the hunt for greener pastures. Country citizens do not have the right to walk the roads without having their rights violated by the same authority that swore to protect them. We pay taxes for non-existent government services; we trade everyday in a corrupt, biased business environment and return home to food left over by the movers and shakers of the country. Yet here we are, celebrating a future and giving out awards to immortalize the folly. We truly are lost in our merry chase of the fuzzy looking ball.

And just as if to drive the whole mournful message home, The Future Awards parades an array of respected Nigerians like Prof. Wole Soyinka, Prof. Pat Utomi, Dr. Reuben Abati et al – all in a frenzy to secure credibility for the awards. While we are not averse to such generous patronage by the older generation, we believe that more caution should be exercised in the way and manner today’s numerous youth ‘initia-thieves’ are endorsed. What we really need is a future, not a party about the future. We need to truly believe in ourselves as Nigerians, for those of us born in this generation never had the pleasure of being proudly Nigerian. Most of us may deny this observation, but it is true. Many of us never had that pleasure, neither the luxury nor the obligation of being proudly Nigerian. We speak with a foreign accent which is the confused mix of the brisk east American English, Queens English and Nigerian English accent. Many of us today claim to be proudly Nigerian, we shout it on media mountain tops, and we have turned the phrase “Proudly Nigerian” into a quality tag put on all products as if assuring standard manufacturing quality. But we all know that we are not. We all harbour the secret desire of migration and when we have free time, we all chase self-rewarding projects which is probably all the time. Nobody truly thinks of Nigeria as a future destination of peace and well-being. We have to change our present thinking and actions. Only those who become successful in doing that should be given awards, if at all we really need to party.

For the basis you were refused making a large deposit without a clear cut explantion on the origin of funds.
I think the reason given is tentative and whether the appeal is granted does not alter or defer the school calendar. Most likely you will have to defer the admission by informing the school of the progress of your appeal so they can grant you another letter.

Family Visit to UK

Family visit visa is for the purpose of visiting close family relatives already settled in the UK. There are certain requirements, which need to be satisfied in order to make a successful Family visit application.

1. Rules and Regulations:

a) Intention To Leave After Visiting
A person requires making his intention of leaving the UK after a particular period of time which can be done by showing strong financial, social and family ties in his/her home country.

The following list of documents is normally acceptable to establish strong ties of a person in his or her home country.

Evidence of Ownership of property
Evidence of an established business oversees

Evidence that the candidate has got family living in his/her home country. The entry clearance officer normally takes into a/c only close family members of the candidate (e.g. spouse, other children) while ascertaining potency of family ties.

Evidence that the applicant has got memberships of professional bodies or social groups would be sufficient to prove social ties.

Bank Statements showing sufficient amount of money.

b) No Intention to Study During Visit
Visitors/tourists are not allowed to study or switch their immigration status to any other status.

c) Not Intention to take employment
The candidate requires proving that he neither needs to nor intends to take job whether full time or on a part time basis. Family visit visa is normally issued on the basis of the assumption that the candidates would not take employment during their stay in the United Kingdom and if such persons engage themselves in any sort of employment whether paid or unpaid, full time or part time then their leave to remain may be shortened by the Immigration Authorities and they may be removed from the country.

d) No Intention to Produce Goods/Provide Services to public
The candidate needs to prove that he neither needs to nor intends to produce goods or provide services to public whether full time or on a part time basis. Family visit visa is normally issued on the basis of the assumption that the candidates would not engage themselves in these business activities during their stay in the United Kingdom and if such persons do take such risks their leave to remain may be curtailed by the Immigration Authorities and they may be removed from the country.

e) Able to sustain & accommodate himself and any dependants without option to public funds
The candidates need to establish that they can maintain and accommodate without recourse to public funds or any employment. It can be proved by providing sufficient availability of funds either in Bank Statements or by some other form of evidence.

f) Able to meet the expenses of the return or onward journey
It can be confirm by providing sufficient availability of funds either in Bank Statements or by some other form of evidence like purchase of a return ticket.

2. Duration of Visa
This type of visa is normally issued for a maximum period of 6 months. Visas issued for longer than six months does not mean that the person has got leave to stay till the end of their visa. This is in fact leave to enter for six months from the date of arrival/influx in the UK and permission to make any subsequent visit to the UK for another period of 6 months till the validity of visa.

3. Right of Appeal
If the British Embassy refuses the entry clearance application of a family visitor, the candidate has got a right of appeal that need to be lodged within 28 days of the receipt of refusal letter. The Manager of Entry clearance normally reviews the decision in the light of the grounds of appeal and may overturn the decision and decide to issue the visa. If the decision is not overturned in the analysis then the case is sent to the Asylum & Immigration Tribunal in the United Kingdom for a full Court Hearing.

4. Work Allowed
The holders of family visiting visa are not allowed to do any sort of work weather paid or unpaid or cannot engage themselves in any sort of business.

5. Extension of Visa
Immigration policies do not allow any extension of visa for the family visitors while remaining within the United Kingdom. However, in cases of absolute emergency family visitors can surely apply for an extension of their leave to remain to the Home Office. The Home Office can only approve this category of application if good documents are provided to its satisfaction in order to exercise judgment in the applicant's favor. But efforts should always be made to return to the Home country within the prescribed time period as any application for extension of a visit visa in the UK may risk any visa application made from outside the UK in future.

6. Spouse / Children
Family visitors cannot invite their spouse / children to join them as their dependants once they are in the UK. Though, they can certainly include them in the entry clearance application and bring them along. It is more probable that the ECO would ask for some more evidence of financial, social and family ties of the family in its home country.

7. Switching Rules
Since 01-October-2004, there have been some major changes in the switching rules. Family visitors can no longer switch to any other category under the immigration rules. Family visitors are normally issued visas on the responsibility that they would return before the end of their permitted leave and have not got any other intention.

8. Settlement Prospects
There are no settlement prospects for the family visitors as it is a temporary visa and they are not allowed to switch to any other immigration category that leads to permanent settlement.
It is important to meet all the requirements of this category by appropriate documents in order to qualify for this visa. Sometimes the visa application gets refused due to the lack of a document, which could have easily been obtained. Although refusal of a visa of this category triggers a right of appeal but unfortunately it takes too long for an appeal to be considered by a senior Entry Clearance Officer (review) or AIT (Court Hearing). It is therefore advised to give full attention to even minor details while proceeding with the entry clearance application for this category as your family might need your presence in the UK on important occasions of their lives!

@opsy4real1

The onus is on you to prove the origin and source of funds of your sponsor.

Your unemployment situation was considered a factor because you have no funds of your own to support you.

Your sponsor's vechicular documents are classified because car documents are not the ideal as origin or source of funds in cases peculiar.

You can apply again but make sure your sponsor's financial commitment and employment or business activities are expicitly defined and his source of funds traceable.
Car documents is not a good source .

Best wishes
Travel / Re: Why Does Embassies Treat Us Bad by vikiviko(m): 11:50am On Jan 12, 2009
Embassies act the way they do because of the ineptitude of our sysytem and the connivance of Nigerians within there rank and file.

I got an email from a visa pplicant who applied at the Irish embassy, Abuja after paying close 6000 euro for a degree programme , he was refused and summarily banned for 5 years for supporting his applications with fake documents.

He was seeking my opinion and i aksed he be truthful with me if he had applied else where and if he had used fake docs, he siad he cant recall.

After investigating i discovered he had used fake documents about 5 years ago to apply for uk visa. The irish emabssy also noted that in the refusal notice.

When applying for visa make sure your documents are original at least that will save u form embarassments thereafter.

In embssies like the south african embassy where curruption thrives and reigns, there is no deceny. The treatment you get from them is as a result of the connivance of Nigerians in there system

The italian embassy is no exception to criminality.

I think embassies in Lagos are currupt ridden and fraudulent.

Not to forget the french embassy too. Some officials of the embassy collect as much as 700k to secure visas for applicants.

Can you imagine Indian visa fee jerked up 43k from a paltry sum of 8k, there are must be regulations as regards vis a issues in the Country.
