A bag of rice selling at a price equivalent to minimum wage is absurd.

A Nigerian soldier told me he earned N36,000 per month in 2014, and bought 4 bags of rice from his town at N7,000 each and still got N8,000 to run expenses for the month but today, he is paid N90,000 and he can only afford a bag of rice. Na so, I begin to pity them.

Justice for military cadets.
How many months will he eat the bag of rice? Is his salary meant for rice alone? How can you earn #36,000 and spend #28,000 on one item of expenditure?

PoliticsRe: FG Manipulating Food Prices For Political Gains – ADC by Vision101(m): 12:52pm On Oct 28, 2025
Mrchippychappy:
Bro that's not the case. Crashing food prices when you have insecurity issues that led to the scarcity of food prices in the first place is not sustainable. What is basically happening here is that the FG are using the national reserves to balance out the actual price of the agricultural products so the sellers can at a rate that doesn't actually reflect the true cost of the product.

If for example a tuber of yam now sells for 3k due to insecurity and the FG covers N800 of that, the farmers can now sell for 2200, not because there's been an actual price reduction but because the FG covered for a substantial amount of that 3k.

It's a stop gap, it might help make food more accessible for a short time but it's not sustainable because the FG are taking funds directly from the national reserves and this would have to be replaced one way or the other (does the new 2026 tax policy ring any bells?) , Also that 3k tuber of yam would most likely sell for almost twice that price in 6 months to a year, as the Islamic terrorists destroy more farm lands and kill more farmers, meaning the FG would have to cover more cost for agricultural products which would in turn lead to more taxes on Nigerians ( remember the FG are not getting this money from thin air, they have to replenish the money they take out meaning more taxes OR request a loan from the IMF and to pay that loan we would need to raise money from somewhere, example...taxes!)

We could do this or, here's a thought, we could just crush the terrorists once and for all. And a first step towards doing this is by calling them terrorists and not bandits. Enough of the silly games
So what is your option and what are you saying: leave the food prices to soar until we crush the bandits. Are you people not the same people advocating for subsidy in every area of our economy? Were you not the same people that condemned Bubu when he shut the boarders to encourage local food production?

When the government quotes increased reserves you say that Nigerians are not feeling it. The same government is using the reserves according to you to make Nigerians feel it you still condemn. Ha ha ha.

When food prices were soaring you used it against the government and now that the prices are going down you still use it against the government. Ha ha ha ha. I tire ooo.

Propaganda and outright lies by APC is for the consumption of their laptop boys online.

But offline, these laptop boys are the worse hit by tinubumonics.

You flocked the market with imported food items which sold at cheaper rate without any consideration for local farmers and the inherent losses they'd incure, then went to town chanting hallelujah over a shortlived fit.
You guys are funny 🤣. The same people that were not happy with Buhari for shutting boarders against food imports are again not happy that PBAT opened the boarders for food imports. See you people's life?

This man has indirectly sentenced himelf to prison. I'm sure his senior lawyers must have told him the true position of law. The prosecutor's presentation and evidence were damning. They must have told him that nzogbu nzogbu will not help him but he ignored or as usual insulted them. They decided to hands off.

Once Kanu submits written address it means that he's resting his case on the evidence of the prosecutor and the judge will foreclose and give judgement.

How about products made in UK that are still cheaper in Nigeria?
Or some global products like coke that is much cheaper in Nigeria?
Products made in UK but cheaper in Nigeria - trade policies. In some countries exports are subsidized by lower tax rate and incentives. Our importers bypass some of the duties through corruption.

Global products like coke - lower quality, lower labour cost and lower tax in Nigeria. These factors wipe out other costs associated with Nigeria economy eg power.
PoliticsRe: IMF World Economic Outlook Growth Projections For 2025 by Vision101(m): 6:32pm On Oct 25, 2025

Nigeria does not exist in isolation to global economic situations. In the same 2010 that you are talking about, China and India had a GDP growth rates of 10.4% and 10.3% respectively. Today, IMF is projecting same China and India’s GDP to grow in 2026 by 4.2 and 6.2 respectively. So, did Tinubu also brought APC to destroy and slowdown China and India’s economic growth?

Nigeria’s economic growth from 2010-2014 was powered majorly by the oil boom. In 2014, Nigeria had a GDP growth rate of 6.3%. That was the same year global economy started falling. The oil boom ended and Crude oil price was already on a free fall as a result of slowdown in global economic growth and By 2015 when APC took over, Nigeria was already borrowing to pay salaries and GDP growth rate had dropped to 2.7%.

Global pandemic finished off every country between 2019 and 2022 so what we have now is a global economy that is gradually recovering despite trade issues by Donald Trump. So, get yourself properly educated before jumping to compare Apple with oranges. While we all want a faster growth rate, we are now very stable and on a better and more sustainable growth trajectory.
Thank you. You are very well informed. Leave these political chochocho. Proper economic analysis requires reasoning without bias.

FreeIgboho:
I give up. What?
The simple answer:
1 the products are from China.
2 the Nigerian currency is weaker than pounds sterling.
3 logically a Chinese amount converted to both currencies should result to Nigerian price being higher than UK price.
4 why then is the UK price higher than Nigerian price?
5 answer: tax and trade policies. There is higher tax in UK than Nigeria. The trade policies encourages importation in Nigeria but discourages same in UK.

Stop comparing this shit hole to US
I prefer to have 100 naira in US than to have 100 thousand in Nigeria. E get why .
You have not been there. That's why you think so. There was a time in this country when people from other parts of Nigeria particularly the south east used to think that once you come to Lagos you pick money on the street. People that lived in Maroko, Mushin, Ajegunle, Orile etc. when they go home they painted a picture of El Dorado.

I have someone that after spending so much for a masters in engineering in the UK is still stuck in care job three years after graduation. They have been scammed by a Nigerian into an employment that has no income but they were made to pay £11,000 for skilled labour sponsorship for the wife. You can imagine someone that lives in Aberdeen that is made to go to work in Glasgow and at the end of the month the employer will say that he has no money to pay. She is stuck with it for three years unless there is divine intervention.

Japa is like any other thing in life. Sweet but not sweet for all and all the time. Let's not make it look like El Dorado.

Enough of these noise and comparisons.

If the conditions are better in Nigeria, the folks abroad will return. You don’t need to sweet talk them into returning.

Less than 2% of folks who left have returned, the remaining 98% who stayed back have their reasons. The government of the day should quit these japa propaganda and focus on making Nigeria work for Nigerians
No matter how good a country is people will always japa. It didn't start today. People japa into Nigeria and out of Nigeria. Are Chinese not here? Is their economy bad? Is just that the awareness started recently that's why it looks like there's anything bad about it. Go to Europe there are several nationals there.

We have a large population made up of youths so people will always leave for pastures new.

The op is right in his analysis. There are things that are good in this country. Someone sent four ties when I looked at the label it was £9 each. They are all polyester material made in China. £9 is almost #18,000. This amount or with a little addition can get a good made in China silk tie in Nigeria. There are some drugs and other items that we buy in Nigeria and send to our relations in the UK. They are cheaper here compared to there. Let me disturb your knowledge of economics: what do you think is the reason for lower cost of the items here?

Adjust the debts by the exchange rate pre 2023 and today and then compare. If we are owing $1b pre 2023 the same $1b today will look like it has bloated when you convert at the present exchange rate.

If Nigeria's total debt is 152 Trillion, is it reasonable to ask that has it not all been borrowed under Tinubu?

The mumu also knows that fx adjustment means our debt in Naira terms went up, while in Dollar terms it has been stable or even going down.

Lastly the fool knows that govt generaly borrows to meet up with budget and payback as revenue flows in. Tinubu has the biggest budget ever and will continue to borrow to execute. He also have the buggest revenue ever, meaning he is paying back as he is borrowing.

This shirt term borrowing keeps the economy rolling
