The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen.
Azubuike Ihejirika, said the army had commenced
massive recruitment to tackle the security challenge
in the country. Ihejirika said this while opening a five-day seminar
organised by the army’s Department of Civil-Military
Affairs at the 2 Div. Odogbo, Ibadan on Monday. “I have commenced the recruitment of 9,000
persons in our various training institutions’’,
Ihejirika said. The COAS, represented by Maj. Gen. John Ewansiha,
said the objective of the seminar was to foster
better working relations with civil society
organisations toward winning hearts and minds. Ihejirika reiterated the intention of the army to train
and retrain its officers in order to meet the security
challenge of the country. “Indeed, the Nigerian army is currently occupied
with domestic challenges in several parts of the
country, especially in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa
States’’, he said. The Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, Maj. Gen. Bola
Koleoso, said the seminar was part of the quests to
resolve the crisis currently facing the nation. “As we all know, the civil society organisations
stand for the defence of human rights everywhere
as well as in crisis situations. “The military aims at defeating insurgents as well as
protecting law-abiding citizens’’, he said. Gov. Abiola Ajimobi, who was the guest of honour,
stressed the need for constant engagement and
discussion between the civil and military publics. “The modus operandi of the military is force;
obedience to order and immediacy of that
obedience. The modus operandi of the civil public is
persuasion and constant engagement, which takes
time“, he said. Ajimobi said the task of such relationship should
thus be how to bring the two publics together to
pursue same agenda for the democratic vision of
the nation. “The Nigerian civil public cannot afford to stand
aloof from the military. “Since independence, the military has fought wars
toward the sustenance of Nigeria’s sovereignty and
territorial integrity. “It has lost thousands of its men who are martyrs of
the peace and nationhood we enjoy today. “We cannot but support the military in its quest to
protect the nation and her territorial borders’’, the

Society Organisations/Military Relations for

Students have called on the Academic Staff Union of
Universities not to betray them in the on-going
strike. They said they would not like a situation
when the strike would be called off without
achieving anything. This came as herbalists in Oyo State pledged their
support for ASUU. According to the President of the herbalists in the
state, Dr. Arunoyemi Asanlaye, “we are in support
of ASUU on the on-going strike”. The students in large number at a town hall
meeting, tagged, Save Public Education Campaign,
which was organised by ASUU, UI chapter at the
Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan Monday
showed their displeasure at the seeming docility
and indifference of the Nigeria Labour Congress calling on the labour union to embark on solidarity
strike to force government to respond to ASUU
demands. Dr. Olusegun Ajiboye, Chairman, ASUU UI chapter,
said the union would use any method to actualize
their demands clarified that the struggle was not
about the salaries of lecturers but the funding of
education in the country. Ajiboye said, “We are using so many methods. We
cannot tell you when to move to Bodija Market.
That is part of our strategies. Instead of begging ASUU, the government should
declare a state of emergency in the education
sector”. Responding to the call by the students, Mr. Bashir
Olanrewaju, NLC Chairman in Oyo State, said, “By
Wednesday, we will come out with a more
proactive stance on the strike. Though, students
have called on us to go on strike, we will not go on
strike now. We will only mediate. If an affiliate has a problem, joining it in strike will collapse the whole
system. We have never been docile about the incident”. Prof. Remi Raji, lecturer at the Faculty of Arts,
University of Ibadan, said, ”Government should
look at the NEEDS Assessment report. It is almost a
year now that the 169 recommendations had been
made and nothing has been done. Salary of lecturers is just one of the nine demands

Lagos State Government has said no
underage pupil would henceforth be eligible for
admission into any public secondary schools in the
state without completing primary six. Meantime, a standing committee to harmonise the
school calendar, curriculum and time- table for the
Basic Education Certificate Examination (Junior
Senior Secondary JSS111) of public and private
schools in the state would be set up soon. The state Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka
Oladunjoye, who disclosed, weekend during a
stakeholders’ session with school proprietors,
affirmed that the era of admitting underage
children into secondary schools in the state was
over. Oladunjoye explained that the need to align the
school calendar, curriculum and time- table of
public schools with that of private schools became
necessary in order to standardise the process. According to her: “Henceforth no pupil will be
eligible for admission into any secondary schools in
the state without completing primary six; the era of
admitting underage pupils into secondary schools
in the state has gone.” She also advised parents and guardians as a matter
of fact to converse in their native language with
their children and wards at home, stressing, “it is by
so doing that our mother-tongue will not only be
promoted but would be spoken effortlessly by the

A tricycle opera-tor, weekend, allegedly
committed suicide by hanging himself in the
residence of his lover at Okpokiti Street, Warri South
Local Government Area, Delta State. Vanguard understood that the deceased
committed suicide because his lover left him in her
house to sleep somewhere else. When Vanguard correspondent arrived the scene,
neighbours were seen discussing the incident,
while homicide detectives from the ‘A’ Police
Division, Warri, came to remove the dangling
remains to the morgue of the CentralHospital, Warri. The policemen, who declined comments later took
the girlfriend away for questioning. A tenant, who pleaded anonymity, told Vanguard,
“it all started last night (Saturday), when we heard
the deceased and his girlfriend arguing. “I was sleeping in my room when I heard them
arguing. It is like the young man wanted to spend
the night with the girl, but the girl refused. “The argument got to a point and the girl told the
boy that if he was going to spend the night in her
house, she will not sleep in the same house with
him. “The boy told the girl that if she leaves, he would
kill himself. The girl, thinking that the boy was
joking, told him to go ahead and kill himself, left the
boy in the room and went to go and sleep in
another place.” It was gathered that when the girl returned in the
morning (yesterday), she discovered that the door
was locked. She alerted her neighbours, who
helped her to force the door open, only to see the
lifeless body of her boyfriend dangling from a rope. The community people took the girl to the police
station. A senior police officer at the ‘A’ Police

The advance team of President Goodluck
Jonathan’s entourage, returning from Ado-Ekiti on
Sunday rendered emergency rescue services to
accident victims on the Lokoja-Abuja highway. The accident which occurred at Okpu village, few
kilometres after Lokoja, involved two cars, carrying
11 people. A Nissan Almera car with registration number AH
47 KAA going to Lokoja and a Honda Accord car
(Baby Boy) with registration number BG945BWR
en-route Abuja, were involved in the accident. The two vehicles had a head-on collision with
serious impact, causing varying degrees of injury to
the occupants of the vehicles. The accident occurred few minutes before the
presidential motorcade came to the scene. The security team in the convoy swung into action
by rescuing trapped victims in the two cars. The front door of the passenger seat of the Nissan
car was axed before a middle aged woman, who
was trapped inside, could be rescued. The medical team, led by Dr Aliyu Usman of the State
House Clinic, rendered emergency medical
treatment to the victims, aided by two nurses. A team of Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC),
led by one Mohammed Haruna, came to the scene
of the accident about 30 minutes into the rescue
operation. The victims were taken to the Federal Medical
Centre, Lokoja in an FRSC rescue van for further
medical attention. An eye witness, Aliyu Sadiq, said that the accident
was caused by over-speeding, dangerous driving
and the poor state of the road. Sadiq appealed to the Federal Government to
expedite action on completing the dualisation of
the Lokoja-Abuja highway. The eye witness, who is a commercial bus driver,
said he plied the road on daily basis, adding that
“there is a hardly a day that an accident is not

Jos – Medical authorities in Plateau have confirmed
an outbreak of cholera in Namu village in the
Qua’pan Local Government Area of the state. Namu, a village at the Plateau and Nasarawa States
border, hosts displaced people in the violent crisis
that broke out in the Obi Local Government Area of
Nasarawa State. “Yes, there has been an outbreak of cholera in
Namu village, eight people have been killed while
61 others have been hospitalised,” the Plateau State
Epidemiologist, Dr Raymond Yuryit, said in Namu on
Sunday. Yuryit spoke when he received Alhaji Alhassan
Barde, the Executive Secretary of the Plateau State
Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), who had
gone to assess the situation. He said that those hospitalised had been diagnosed
with the disease and had been admitted into
various health centres. Juryit attributed the outbreak to overcrowding,
dirty environment and the consumption of
unhygienic food and water. He described cholera as a “deadly disease” that
could kill “within the shortest possible time because
its dehydrates the victim, leading to severe gastro-
intestinal impact”. The medical expert explained further that the
Namu victims suffered chronic diarrhoea and
vomiting, saying that many had been hit by the
disease before government intervened. The specialist said that the epidemic was not
altogether a surprise as the area had lots of
internally displaced persons from Nasarawa State, a
development that had put much pressure on the
environment and portable drinking water. “But we are happy that the situation is already
under control,” he said. The epidemiologist explained that he had advised
health workers in private and government health
centres on ways to avert a recurrence of the ailment
and also on how to quickly manage the situation if
it arose. He thanked the Plateau and Nasarawa States
Governments for their quick response to the report,
lauding the SEMAs for their massive support. He called on government at all levels to ensure that
the monthly sanitation exercise was taken
seriously, especially in rural areas, to ensure good
hygiene for rural dwellers. Juryit also appealed to government to provide
portable water to rural dwellers, pointing out that
dirty water was the main cause of the epidemic. He called on people in the area to promptly report
any case of diarrhoea or vomiting to the nearest
health centre, saying that quick action could
minimise casualty rates. Barde, in his remarks, said that the quick
intervention by the agency was part of its statutory
mandate, promising to continue to offer quick
assistance to areas in need. The SEMA chief said that the agency intervened to
avert the possibility of the disease spreading to
other parts of the state, calling on relevant agencies
to assist in the management of disaster cases. He thanked the Nasarawa Government for
donating drugs that would be distributed to

Convener of the Save Nigeria Group (SNG), Tunde Bakare, has welcomed the proposed national conference with some level of caution but warned that if the nation does not talk before the next general elections, the country might cease to exist. The pastor of the Latter Rain

criticised the national leader of the All Progressive
Change (APC),Bola Tinubu, for his stance in
opposing the planned national conference.
Referring to the former governor of Lagos state,
Pastor Bakare inferred that "those that have being campaigning for the national conference in the past
are now campaigning against it because tables
have turned and they have benefitted from the
public treasury." "If we do not talk before the 2015
elections, we can just kiss Nigeria goodbye," the
clergy predicted. Mr. Tinubu has repeatedly expressed his objection
to the national conference, describing it as a
diversion and ill-timed, with about 15 months to

Zuriel Oduwole, the 11-year-old Nigerian girl
advocating for education for the girl child in
Africa has been appointed Ambassador in
Tanzania. The ‘wonder girl’ was honoured by the
country’s first lady, Her Excellency Madam
Salma Kikwete where she also attended UN
event in Dar Es Salaam last week. It was the 11 years old’s second country stop
on her East African leg to launch the acclaimed
Dream Up, Speak Up, Stand Up program, aimed
at inspiring and encouraging Africa’s girls. Senior officials of the Tanzanian State House,
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ministry of
Education, welcomed her to the land of
Kilimanjaro as he stepped out of the plane. On the first official day of her arrival, the
atmosphere was purely festive at the Olympio
School, one of the oldest academic institutions
in Dar Es Salaam, where Zuriel went so speak as
part of her project. In the afternoon of October 11th, the day
designated by the UN to celebrating the Girl
Child, she attended the United Nations UNFPA
event in Dar Es Salaam, which focused on
reducing the incidence of child marriage in
