RIP PRETTY! GOLDIE |
A proud Globacom, leading and pace-setting supporter of Nigeria Football at all levels, yesterday in Johannesburg, opened the floodgate of rewards to the Super Eagles and reaffirmed its commitment to make the Super Eagles fly comfortably in the Confederations Cup in Brazil later this year. Demonstrating a rare joy of seeing the Super Eagles win the Nations Cup for the third time, by taking a close look at the gold trophy in front of him, Chairman of Globacom, Otunba Mike Adenuga said he was so glad to see this day happen and that “we are very proud of the Super Eagles as they have made us very proud”. GENEROUS GIVER: Chief Mike Adenuga Jnr (with the trophy) is flanked by Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo, Coach Stephen Keshi and Vincent Enyeama. GENEROUS GIVER: Chief Mike Adenuga Jnr (with the trophy) is flanked by Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo, Coach Stephen Keshi and Vincent Enyeama. And whilst thanking members of Nigeria Football Federation and members of the team represented by the team’s Captain, Joseph Yobo, Vice Captain, Vincent Enyeama, Mikel Obi as well as Chief Coach, Stephen Keshi and his Assistant Daniel Amokachi, Chief Adenuga responded to the plea for all round support from the Nigeria Football Federation President, Aminu Maigari by giving the team $1million (One Million US Dollars). He also invited the team to a reception in Abuja after their visit to President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday. Chief Adenuga was particularly glad at the performance of the team and he said, “if we don’t support our own, nobody will do that. Globacom has through the thick and thin, struggled with the National Team and thank God we have seen this day”. The all-smiling Globacom boss said Globacom will further support Super Eagles’ preparations for the Confederations Cup in Brazil coming up in June this year and turning to his left in an early morning reception for the delegation, he responded to the Federation who requested for car and house for record winning Stephen Keshi and said, “you should tell me exactly the kind of car Keshi wants and that will happen immediately. We have to deliver to him (Keshi) and make him comfortable and don’t allow him do an Andrew on us because he has a very big edge now particularly with his fluent French, he is wanted by so many other countries; we don’t have to go far to look for top success; we must treat our own very well” Acknowledging Keshi’s contributions, he added that the success of the Super Eagles today was as a result of the support of yesterday which Globacom has consistently given to the National Team and he congratulated all the boys and members of the team for their victory in the finals which also gave joy to the Governor of Bauchi State, Isa Yuguda who was present at this heart-lifting ceremony which lasted for just 30 minutes at his Johannesburg residence. Also present was the Marketing Consultant to Nigeria Football Federation and CEO of Padmodzi, Chief Mike Ituemagbor who said the reward of $1 million was the first official material appreciation coming to the Super Eagles and that any other organization making such rewards must have to come through Nigeria Football Federation. He reiterated that the only partners of the National Team, who have been with them, have the right to enjoy the benefits of this moment. In a brief comment, the newly appointed Chairman of the Interim Management Committee of Nigeria Premier League, Hon Nduka Irabor thanked the Globacom boss for his outstanding contributions to Nigeria football especially the Professional League. He solicited for his further support of the Nigeria Premier League as they look ahead to resolving lingering issues affecting the take-off of the League. ews Kano - The Kano State Government on Tuesday ban the activities of commercial motorcyclists in the state from Jan. 24. The Deputy Governor of the state, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, who announced the ban in a broadcast in Kano, said the measure became imperative considering the current situation in the state. The ban is coming in the wake of last Saturday’s attack on the convoy of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero. Ganduje said: “the action became imperative so as to ensure that all commercial activities of motorcyclists in the state were registered in their local government as part of government measures to ensure security in the state”. He said the ban would take effect on all commercial activities of the motorcyclists from Jan. 24, adding that the attack on emir’s convoy shook the city of Kano. Reacting to the ban, the National President Amalgamated Commercial Owners/Riders Association of Nigeria, Malam Muhammad Hassan, however, described the development as “unpleasant and highly devastating’’. Hassan said that no fewer than 1.5 million people would be rendered jobless by the government’s pronouncement. He then called on the government to come up with a new measure that could create job opportunities for the people that were rendered jobless by the new policy. LONDON (AFP) – Queen Elizabeth II gave thanks on Tuesday for Britain’s year of Olympic and diamond jubilee festivities, in her first Christmas message to the Commonwealth broadcast in 3D. The 86-year-old monarch said it had been “humbling” to see the vast crowds joining celebrations marking her 60th year on the throne and paid tribute to the volunteers, as well as the athletes, who took part in the London Olympics. “The success of these great festivals depended to an enormous degree upon the dedication and effort of an army of volunteers,” she said. “All those who saw the achievement and courage at the Olympic and Paralympic Games were further inspired by the skill, dedication, training and teamwork of our athletes.” Everyone was able to share in the “excitement and drama” of the Games, she added. The monarch formally opened the Games in dramatic fashion herself, after taking part in a James Bond scene which ended with the pair seemingly parachuting down to the Olympic Stadium from a helicopter. Her pre-recorded Christmas message was broadcast across Britain and all 15 Commonwealth realms where she is head of state — although just a small minority have access to the 3D-television facility. The 3D broadcast comes exactly 80 years after the queen’s father, king George V, gave the first royal Christmas broadcast to the Commonwealth by radio. Behind-the-scenes photographs showed the queen beaming as she previewed the footage, wearing customised 3D glasses marked with a “Q” in diamante studs. Emma Amaize, Regional Editor, South-South, Austin Ogwuda & Festus Ahon ASABA — THE gunmen, who abducted Professor Mabel Kamene Titi Okonjo, the 82- year-old mother of the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, reportedly mounted surveillance on the palace for about one week before they kidnapped her, Sunday. The one-storey building with adjoining apartments for some family members and palace workers is located at an isolated area in Ogbe-Ofu in Ogwashi-Uku, Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State. Investigations by Vanguard showed that security in the area inhabited by the traditional ruler of Ogwashi- Uku, Obi Chukwuka Okonjo was porous and the kidnappers took advantage of it. However, being aged people, the king and his wife, never thought there was anything kidnappers would want to do with them. However, the state governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, yesterday, temporarily relocated his office from Asaba to the palace, where the queen mother, a retired professor of sociology,UniversityofNigeria, UNN, Nsukka and an indigene of Obomkpa in Aniocha North Local Government Area was kidnapped, to monitor and coordinate security interventions for her release.
