The followers of Christ were first called Christians at Antioch. They were called Christians because the were behaving like Christ. They saw Christlike attributes in them, so they were like "these are Christians!"

You can't call yourself a Christian if you're a scammer, thief, fornication, liar or committing any kind of sin. The question is, can Christ Jesus be living the kind of life you live if He's still here on earth? If the answer is no, then you're not a Christian.
