Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by xwolverine: 7:19pm On Jan 03, 2015
GreenandGold:
In the meantime, Nigeria (a nation of barbers) begged South Africa to modernize her aged and useless Hinds.

Now thank to South Africa, Nigerians have a chance of flying a machine with 21st century avionics.

Thank you South Africa
Was it done for free? NO
Can SANDF/SAAF afford a similar upgrade? NO

If Nigeria with approximately 22 Mi-35P (Plus 40 more ordered), upgrades its fleet because it can, how does it change the fact that SANDF/SAAF is broke and can't afford the same, coupled with the fact that the Rooivalk project is stalled.

Its just like me buying a Lamborghini and my neighbour who helped in fixing in some custom rims (which I paid for) sounding excited, what should the manufacturers do?

So whats your point exactly?

You've done an excellent job already bro. Like you, I believe it's a South-African ATE up-grade. The Algerians also have this up-grade, the MI-35 Super Hind.

The problem is, we don't know where we bought the basic hinds from.

We have outstanding orders for a significant amount of MI-35M and MI-171sh from russia. We signed this contract at ADEX 2014. All brand new.

We also have a previous order for MI-171SH and 3 second hand MI-35P helicopters from Russia

There is also the order for 12 up-graded MI-35P helicopters from belarus.

Lastly, we have MI-17 and MI-35 helicopter orders stuck in Ukraine. The Ukrainian order has been slow due to the conflict in the Donbass region.

All in all, we have a significant order for helicopters for our Airforce.

#to hell with back stabbing uncle sam.
Wow... morale go too high be that.

Kai,
Those birds are sweet.

We need an experienced tactician to command this helicopter force. Someone that knows how best to inflict maximum damage on Boko Haram equipment and firepower using these birds in close support with military intelligence.
I hope they have night fighting capability with infra-red. So that they are used mainly at night to hit the Boko boys, their tanks and armored vehicles with surprise cheesy attacks.

PoliticsRe: I’m Coming Up With Anti-corruption Plan - President Jonathan Says by xwolverine(op): 8:27pm On Jan 02, 2015
What happened to the vision 2020 and other millennium development goals? This administration has since jettisoned it in favour of emergency governance. No that the elections are close, we suddenly realised the importance of anti-corruption.
PoliticsI’m Coming Up With Anti-corruption Plan - President Jonathan Says by xwolverine(op): 8:24pm On Jan 02, 2015
Speaking during a special New Year service at the Dunamis International Gospel Centre, in Abuja yesterday January 1st, President Jonathan said his administration is coming up with plans and programmes to fight corruption in Nigeria. What he said below...

"There are two main problems confronting us as a nation: The issue of insecurity in the North where we have the Boko Haram terrorists and in the South where we have commercial kidnapping. The next thing that people worry about after security is the issue of corruption. We are coming out with programmes and plans to clean up. These are things that you don’t just use a magical wand to wave off, otherwise even before I became the President, there wouldn’t have been corruption in Nigeria.

“It is not just about shouting corruption. It is not about looking at one person, arrest the person and show him on television. It is about strengthening institutions and coming up with credible plans to make sure that anybody who gets involved with corruption, the system must have a way of detecting him and punishing him.

“Until you put such a system on ground, you cannot talk about eradicating corruption, you will just be celebrating corruption. You would have noticed that from Christmas to New Year, at least, it has been calm. It did not happen by accident.

“It happened because you have been praying for this country and the government has also been doing something. We do not need to announce what we are doing. With your prayers, we will surely get there. We will continue to come up with programmes that will help the ordinary people.
“The same way we won the war against Ebola, we shall win the terror war. 2015 is a turning point because of the elections. Some people will not mind if half of the country get burnt because of their ambition.

“I always say that we must have a country first, we must have a people first before talking about ambition. We must pray that God should give us the wisdom to do things with some decorum and we should not compromise the lives of the people for ambition.

“I always say that my ambition and the ambition of any politician for that matter, is not worth the blood of the smallest Nigerian.”

“For you to achieve anything, you must have a clear vision. Even if you look at what we have been doing as a nation, you will really see that before this time when the country used to have this 25 years plan, the budget was based on 25 years clear plan for the country. So you know where you are going for 25 years.

“Then it was broken down into five years plan and annual budget and we knew where we were going. But after some time, things collapsed and we run government on emergency basis and you see government start wobbling.

“We are going back to those good days when we had vision. We have plan for agriculture, we have plan for industry, we have plan for automobile and many other areas. If you have a vision, any proposal that comes in, no matter how good they are, must fall into your vision for it to go through. With your prayers, surely as a nation, we will get to where our vision will take us to.

“Having passed through school and being in government for quite some time, I have realised that for you to achieve anything, you must have a clear vision. If you have a clear vision, even if you don’t get the exact target, you will get something close to the target."

Wonder why Nigeria needs a squadron of a one engine fighter jet. I bet they'll be flying in the pakis for maintenance, assuming they bother to maintain it.
Well, its a case of what are the available options, is it the Migs with problematic engines? or with the issues with the SU-30 of the indian Airforce, the fleet has crashed 5 times between 2009 and now like christmas fowl, grounded twice between 2013 and now, Pilot seats ejecting prior to landing which happened in October, or is it the cost of production shooting up from $20 million to $75 million despite production shifting to HAL facilities in India. We have had situations where the pilots have had to land with single engines when the SU-30 engines failed and the Indian airforce as a precautionary step, it has started servicing the engine after 700 hours instead of the mandated 1,000 hours of flying, adding to the non-availability of the aircraft.

At this point in time, with the non-availability of western Jets, the JF-17 is the best we can get.

SirShymex:
Nah, I think technology was included in the initial deal. And that is a huge deal for a country like Nigeria that can't build anything. At least, if they can't use it now, it might come handy in future, when the country starts churning out real intellectuals. Also, it is 4th gen aircraft and they is nice, regardless of its capabilities.

Technology can't be lost - and getting Engineers to show you how to use the technology is the easiest part of the puzzle. Two squadrons, with probably 10 of the 4th gen Sukhois should be enough.
To add, the old F7's were crashing like chickens until the pakistani airforce sent some instructors to rescue our pilots, I think the JF-17 is a good step in the right direction, we cannot risk having a repeat of the Sepecat Jaguar debacle with western Jets.

I would have recommended the Rafale's and /or Typhoon Jets, but thats a huge risk at this time, with France supporting our enemies (cameroon, chad and Niger), they wouldn't think twice before grounding the Rafales if we ever have a confrontation with their minions. For me, looking east was always the option because these westerner (UK and US) are two faced and dangerous.

With the US predicting that Nigeria would disintegrate by 2015, the right time to arm up is now, and upgrading our Air force should be our focus, because we already have the largest army is sub-saharan africa.

Typical nigerian mindset of thinkin that non western things r inferior
RE the Jaguar debacle

The Jaguar jet has had the shortest service life in the Nigerian Air Force, thanks in no small part to the nature of the purchase contract and the international politics of arms transfer at that time.

An initial batch of 12 (twelve) single seat variants were supplied and later 6 (six) twin-seat versions which were used for pilot training in the United States were inducted into the NAF.

The Nigerian Air Force was denied the option of purchasing advanced weapons to enhance the deep strike capabilities of the Jaguar jets except for iron bombs of limited effectiveness. A request for in-flight refuelling tankers was also turned down because they could be used to invade neighbouring countries.

It was stipulated that the jets were to be used only for defensive purposes or they ran the risk of a withdrawal of technical support and spare parts and NAF could not resell/transfer the jets to a third party (another country) without approval of British Aerospace (now BAe Systems), UK Ministry of Defense and the House of Commons.

Subsequently, the technical support agreement expired and was not renewed and more importantly, the assembly line for the Jaguar jet was shut down. The only maintenance facility that can undertake rebuild/repair work is located in India.

Sometime in 2007 when these jets were put on display by the NAF for prospective buyers to inspect, it emerged that a Jaguar B TRAINER variant (NAF 703) had flown for only 150 hours 54 minutes since it was manufactured in December 1984. It had its 100 hours inspection on the 10th day of February, 1986. It suggests that the crated fleet of Jaguar jets is almost brand-new still.

So it is imperative that future airplane purchases should also be backed up by first class in-country maintenance facilities and support structures. When NAF offered the Jaguar for sale, BAe officials came for inspection/evaluation and among others conditions; they said that BAe will consider purchasing the planes at the purchase price or lower value than what Nigeria spent on the acquisition of the said jets.

As modern military technology is brought to bear on today’s battlefield, the theory, tactics and strategy of air combat maneuvering have impacted significantly on the composition and force structure of Air Forces around the world.

From the lessons learnt through recent air wars from the Israeli-Syrian air war, Falklands War, Bosnia to Gulf War I & II, modern Air Combat Maneuvering (ACM) techniques indicate that Beyond Visual Range (BVR) engagement is the way to go.

Also deep strike operations became so expensive in terms of airplane and crew losses (especially during Gulf War I where Tornado jet accounted for a large number of air to ground losses) that the strategy of package strikes (Vietnam era tactics) was revalidated and today remains one of the current modes of offensive/defensive counter air operations

More:

Nigeria, long targeted as a potential customer for the Chinese/Pakistani JF-17 Thunder jet, is close to ordering one or two squadrons, according to reports from Pakistan.

IHS Jane's Defence Weekly quoted a senior Pakistani Ministry of Defence official at the IDEAS 2014 exhibition in Pakistan as saying that Nigeria was close to signing a contract for the jets and that the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has finalised its recommendations for the acquisition of 25-40 aircraft.

This comes after NAF chief Air Aarshal Adesola Nunayon Amosu visited Pakistan in October, where he toured the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) facility where the JF-17 is manufactured. Pakistan also offered Nigeria tanks, armoured personnel carriers, radio equipment and night vision equipment.

At the IDEAS 2014 exhibition, Pakistan’s Air Chief Marshal Tahir Rafique Butt said that Nigeria had expressed interest in the JF-17, reports Army Recognition.

In March this year Pakistani and Nigerian defence officials met and discussed defence opportunities. In addition to the JF-17, Nigeria has previously shown interest in acquiring Al-Zarrar main battle tanks, Kaan 33 fast attack craft and small arms.

Nigeria and Pakistan enjoy good defence relations, with Pakistan training Nigerian officers. Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Pakistan, Malam Dauda Danladi, recently said that 120 officers attended various courses in Pakistan, with 40 currently undergoing training this year.

The JF-17 is jointly produced by the Chengdu Aircraft Industries Corporation (CAC) of China and the Pakistan Air Force and Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC). The Pakistan Air Force has 50 in service and has been flying the type since 2007, although only officially inducting the aircraft in 2010. Pakistan may acquire up to 200.

Pakistan and China have also been promoting the JF-17 to various countries, such as Bangladesh, Myanmar, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Venezuela and Turkey.

Last month PAF Air Commodore Khalid Mahmood, head of JF-17 sales and marketing, said Pakistan and China were in advanced talks with ten countries to sell the JF-17. A Middle Eastern country was expected to be the first foreign client.

The FC-1 Xialong/JF-17 Thunder programme was launched in 1991 after the United States cancelled development of the Chengdu Super-7 following the 1989 Tianamen Square incident. Collaboration with Pakistan began in 1995, leading to a joint development contract in June 1999. The aircraft first flew in August 2003 and the first JF-17 squadron was inducted into the Pakistan Air Force in February 2010.

The aircraft has a design service life of 4 000 flight hours or 25 years. It can carry up to 3 600 kg (8 000 lb) of ordnance in addition to its twin-barrel 23 mm cannon. It is powered by a Russian RD-93 turbofan, a variant of the RD-33 used on the MiG-29. However, China is developing the more reliable and powerful WS-13 engine to replace the RD-93. A glass cockpit features an electronic flight instrument system with wide-angle head-up display and three colour multifunction displays.

In addition to JF-17s, the Nigerian Air Force has expressed interest in buying a squadron of Textron AirLand scorpion jets. Last month Air Vice Marshal Rufus A Ojuawo, the director of operations for the Nigerian Air Force, said the NAF wants and needs the Scorpion and that a formal request to buy could be made soon.

The NAF uses seven Mi-24 attack helicopters for counter-insurgency operations as well as 11 F-7 fighter jets, 21 L-39ZA Albatros, 12 MB-339 and 12 Alpha Jet trainer/light attack aircraft. However, the majority of these aircraft are several decades old and have been worn down by attrition. The F-7s are unable to carry precision guided air to surface weapons while the country’s ATR 72 surveillance aircraft are able to detect insurgent activity but not deploy weapons.

Ojuawo told IHS Jane’s Defence Weekly that the Air Force has obsolete equipment with low serviceability rates and that it needs a rapid response capability with concentrated firepower. He added that the NAF would shortly argue the Scorpion’s case with the government in the hope of initially buying a squadron’s worth of aircraft and possibly more in the future.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is close to finalising an order for the purchase of one or two squadrons of the JF-17 Thunder fighter aircraft co-produced by Pakistan and China, a senior Pakistani Ministry of Defence official told IHS Jane's on 2 December.

Speaking at the International Defence Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS) 2014 in Karachi, the official said the NAF finalised its recommendation for the purchase of 25-40 JF-17s after NAF chief air marshal Adesola Nunayon Amosu visited Pakistan in October. AM Amosu's engagements in Pakistan included a visit to the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) at Kamra, north of Islamabad, where the JF-17 is manufactured.

Just parking a squadron of SU-30 in a Tarmac somewhere in the south East airforce base, would be a deterrent to our neighbours, we don't even need to fly them to achieve this aim. As of today 23 November 2014, nigeria doesn't have any mordernised air defence system, what we have was purchased in the 70's despite what we are making daily from crude sales, and you think France would be happy to have a rich nation as neighbours to its former colonies in africa? A United nigeria is a threat to other African nations any day anytime.

We are where we are because of the lack of commitment on the part of the NAF top brass. $2 Billion was approved for the purchase of military hardwares, what do we get, purchase of VIP transport hellicopters. They have turned the NAF to a transport company, at this point in our history as a nation when we have insurgents declaring a full scale war on Nigeria, our priority is purchasing 2 Augusta wetland VIP hellos, cash down. I've never seen an unserious set of administrators like what we have presently, abeg don't get me started.

Billyonaire:
I say we start bombing Chad Republic. I am ready to go on covet operation this time. Are you fucking kidding me ?
Nigerians, we love taking ourselves too seriously.

Don't make me laugh, the Chadian airforce has 4 mig-29's and 6 su-25, these two fighter jets can strike Lagos without leaving the Chadian airspace. How would you bomb them, please tell me, is it alpha jets that would pursue mig-29? Or are you thinking of striking Chad with amdioha? grin

This is what you get when the NAF top brass doesn't put money where there mouth is. I'm not sure they've even seen a mig-29 sales team, talk less of buying one.

FYI

Marussia has folded up

Up next Caterham
Heard Ferrari and red bull are willing to run three cars next season, don't know how true though. But that would be hilarious, Alonso and Seb in the same team!! Nico crashing into Lewis would be child's play compared to what those two would do to each other.....it would be fun though

Lol

I'm no lewis fan boy

His pomposity put me off..though he has chilled down now..

For me its about merit

He has 10 wins..nico has 5
And Nico doesn't perform well under pressure, remember what happened in the US, despite qualifying in pole.

The championship is in the bag for Lewy I tell ya

Nothing irks me more than an ungrateful pleb. I'm so pissed off right now at Seb, now I know why he was struggling all season while Ricciado was performing well in the same car. He simply wanted to trigger his release clause. I doubt he made the right decision though because looking at the way Alonso is being treated like an outcast, I doubt Seb with a similar temperament would get it easy with the team setup. New car, new team with an impatient driver and a management not willing to make timely decisions. But after all is said and done I'm still grateful for the fun times we had with him, but hey, life goes on and smiley Dan is looking very promising and with Kvyat in the mix, I'd say 'bring it on!' Silver bullets.
