Zanna Bukar Mustapha, a legal practitioner who runs a school for kids orphaned in the result of Boko Haram activities, on Sunday, July 6, 2014, said the only way to stop the Islamist from launching more mayhem in the country is to involve clerics from Saudi Arabia. Man claiming to be leader of Nigerian Islamist extremist group Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, in video screengrab, unknown location, Sept. 25, 2013. Mustapha, who owns a Maiduguri-based foundation called "The Future Prowess", made the revelation to Sunday Trust. He revealed that the sect's leaders belonged to the Salafi movement which has its headquarters in the Islamic holy land. Related: Missing Chibok Girls: Parents Ready To Die In Sambisa Forest The lawyer who expressed doubt about the involvement of the United States and other Western countries towards putting an end to insurgency insisted that the best way was to bring clerics from outside the country who are of the same faith, who may have a better understanding of the faith which Boko Haram believe in, so that they can sit with them and dialogue. He expressed optimism that these Saudi Arabian clerics would definitely come up with ways of engaging the sect, noting that not with arms but rather academically as they poses more superior arguments in judgment, in knowledge and in what the doctrine truly stands for. "Muhammed Yusuf, (Abubakar) Shekau and all the rest are of the Salafi movement. And when you talk of Salafi, you have to go to Saudi Arabia to get them. When you get them, you can find an international organization to organize advanced contact that will bring the Salafis in Saudi Arabia to go to the prisons and meet the insurgents that are in the hands of the Federal Government of Nigeria. By the time the insurgents get a clear knowledge of what the Salafis stand for, you release one, two or three of them to go down to the leadership of the group. "They can talk to the leadership and they would also see the girls that are now in captivity. They would therefore sit and discuss with their own people because they are not afraid of other sect members. Thereafter, they would come back to the government. From there, you go to the second stage of swapping the girls with the prisoners. They would tell you who and who they want government to release, and government can decide those to be released. "That would also open another window of opportunity for the peace process. But where you are carrying guns, sending people to fight where they cannot even fight, you are even creating a sort of a mutiny within the military because there are fifth columnists within the military who don't want the crisis to end. "There is misunderstanding being imported into the insurgency that we don't even know. But by the time you engage in these measures, and put the processes in order, all shall be well," Mustapha said. TheCable reports that when Mustapha was asked why his school has remained operational as well as the only school that has not been attacked by the Islamist who have been busy burning schools and killing students in Maiduguri, which has led to the closing of most schools in the area, the lawyer revealed that his school was not picketed because he is trusted by the sect due to his open mindedness. Related: Why We Are Yet To Storm Sambisa Forest - Defence Headquarters Reveals "I have an Islamic foundation that caters for the well- being of orphans which cuts across various divides and that does not in any way exclude the insurgents' family members, widowed and orphaned in the crises. Having them is a leverage. As you know, we have the Future Prowess widows who are part of the Parent Teachers Association, which often guides the making of the school curriculum. "We had problems in the curriculum at the early stage of the school when insurgents' wives complained of the inclusion of western education in the curriculum. We changed it to be 'conventional education' instead of 'western education' because when you say western in Arabic, it means pagan (garbi)". Meanwhile, Boko Haram onslaughts which have claimed more than 10,000 innocent lives in the past five years, attracted the attention of foreign powers, when it kidnapped over 234 female students from Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State nearly three months ago http://m.naij.com/news/69229.html

s | Nightout | Classified Ads | Games | Music mp3 | Photos & Pictures | Bible BREAKING NEWS: Rivers Assembly Majority Leader, Chidi Lloyd, Arrested For Murder 03.01.2014, 6:39 Local Share this story The Rivers State Police Command said it had arrested the Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Mr. Chidi Lloyd, for the alleged murder of his kinsman, Mr. Kingsley Ejeuo and a police sergeant, Urang Obediah. A statement made on Thursday night indicated that Lloyd was purportedly arrested on his way to join the state Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, in his private jet in order to escape justice. The statement sent via e-mail by the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ahmad Mohammad, specified that Lloyd knocked down Obediah while pursuing Ejeuo, identified to be his political opponent. Lloyd, who was still standing trial for his involvement in the fracas that took place in the State House on July 9, 2013, was said to have rammed into Ejeuo's Passat car with a bulletproof vehicle and killed him (Ejeo). The police command pointed out that it had initially thought it was an auto accident until Lloyd relocated to another hospital, "conscious of what he did." "The Rivers State Police Command has arrested Hon. Chidi Llyod of the Rivers State House of Assembly for murder of police Sgt. Urang Obediah and Mr. Kingsley Ejeuo, his kinsman and arch political opponent. "He was arrested on his way to join Governor Amaechi Rotimi in his private jet at the Airforce base to escape justice. "Hon. Chidi Lloyd on December 30, 2013 while pursing his political opponent, knocked down Sgt. Urang Obediah, in spite of his effort to stop him, rammed and killed him and went ahead to crush the Passat car of Mr. Kingsley Ejeuo was driving and killed him. "Initially the Police thought that it was a mere accident, which ought to have been a manslaughter. The Commissioner of Police directed ACP Aliyu Garba, the Area Commander Metro, to visit him in his hospital bed and commiserate with him, conscious of what he did, Chidi Lloyd relocated to another hospital. "Facts emerged that Chidi Lloyd drove a bullet- proof vehicle while pursuing his political opponent, late Mr. Kingsley Ejeuo, and he (Lloyd) knocked down Sgt. Urang Obediah, who died on the spot and (Lloyd) moved ahead to smash a political opponent in his Passat car who equally died instantly," the statement reads. The statement added that late Ejeuo, who hailed from the same place with Lloyd was believed to be in the PDP camp led by Elder Felix Obuah. The statement also indicated that the Leader of the House allegedly escaped from the hospital where he was being guarded by four policemen. However, a top government official told our correspondent that the claim by the police that Lloyd tried to join Amaechi in his (Amaechi) private jet in order to escape justice was a blatant lie. It will be recalled that Lloyd, who presented himself to the Nigeria Police after a video clip showed him hitting a member of the House of Assembly, Mr. Michael Chinda, with a mace on the head, was charged to court on a six-count charge, including attempted murder. Lloyd was later granted bail in order to receive medical attention after sustaining injury during the July 9, 2013 free-for-all in the chambers of the State House of Assembly. Related News |
Okonjo-Iweala Shuns House Deadline 03.01.2014, 6:44 Local Share this story Is the economy healthy? There seems to be no answer to this knotty question, with Minister of Finance Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala's seeming refusal to clear the air. The House of Representatives Finance Committee gave the minister 50 questions on the state of the economy. She was to answer in two weeks. The Minister was yet to respond yesterday. The Committee, on December 19, last year listed the 50 questions for the Minister at an interactive session where she told the lawmakers that she was "sick due to lack of sleep". The meeting ended on a sour note when the Minister insisted that she could continue with the session, with the assistance of her two subordinates. The Committee refused to grant Mrs. Okonjo- Iweala's request, saying her health could not be compromised. Committee Chairman Jibrin Abdulmumin said the backlash could only be imagined if she collapses during the session. Though the Chairman could not be reached for comments, it was learnt that the Committee is not opposed to giving the minister more time for her response. A source told The Nation: "You see, the minister almost succeeded in making us look like we were inconsiderate whereas we were not aware of the reaction that would follow if we insisted on questioning a sick minister. "I am sure the Committee will give her enough time; we won't leave any room for anyone to put the blame on us by the time we wield the big stick. Nobody is bigger than the country. "We are not here on our own and we are constitutionally empowered to do what we are doing. The issue is about the country and not about an individual and this is not a party matter. "My guess is by the time we resume from the break, more than enough time would have been given and by then, whatever we decide to do would not be seen as vindictive." The Committee's concern on the economy is premised on the fact that the government has been celebrating a single-digit Gross domestic Product (GDP) growth, but facts do not support the claims. The Committee noted that while speaking recently at a breakfast dialogue with some members of the organised private sector in Lagos - a forum organised by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), the Minister was quoted as saying: "We are growing, but not creating enough jobs. That is a very big challenge…We need to grow faster. I think it needs to grow at least 9 to 10 per cent to drive job growth the way we want." The Committee asked: "Don't you agree that a good finance minister managing an economy like ours should be celebrating a GDP growth as high as 20 per cent annually? "Why is it that our economy cannot grow beyond a single digit? How many jobs are being created as a result of these said growths? In which sectors of the economy are these jobs created? If in private sector, what contribution is government making to further assist these private sector firms? "In the presence of Nigeria's huge infrastructure deficit, why is it that the country's debt-to-GDP at about 19 percent in 2012 remains one of the lowest in the world when compared to nations already with world-class infrastructure and industrial economies, such as America's 105 per cent, Brazil's 65.49 per cent, India's 67.60 per cent and South Africa's 40.9 per cent? "Since facts don't lie, have you any disagreements with the September 4, 2013 Global Competitiveness Report of the World Economic Forum for 2013-2014, which ranked Nigeria 120th out of 148 countries ranked in the Global Competitiveness Index, including being ranked far behind some African countries, such as Mauritius 45th, South Africa 53rd, and Kenya 96th? ''For the first time in Nigeria's 53-year history, we have successfully privatised the electric power industry,'' so said the President at a recent meeting in London with some foreign investors. "As minister of finance, should you agree that the recent privatisation of the country's power infrastructure is worth celebrating as a major economic achievement in 2013, when in reality there is little or nothing to show as an improvement in the country power supply? Also, why our rush to wholesale privatisation of the power sector when countries like South Africa, generating as high as 42,000MW, still have their power sector mostly in public hands?" The Committee was also cognisant of the fact that Nigerian leaders are always quick to compare the nation's economic growth or otherwise with other countries. However, the Committee was of the opinion that while it was easy to compare, but economic indices in the two environments were conveniently ignored by the leaders. Looking at the essence of the Excess Crude Account and the Sovereign Wealth Fund to internal economic growth, It was pointed out to the minister that "Your references to the country's economic growth profile have always been based on Fitch, Standard and Poor's, and Moody's ratings. "Are you aware that these same rating agencies are being sued in New York (with case # 652410/2013) by two Bear Stearns hedge funds for fraudulently assigning inflated ratings to securities in the run-up to the 2008 financial crisis? If you do, why do you insist on accepting the rating as reliable. "How much exactly has been the amount of money lost in government revenue as a result of import duty waivers in 2011, 2012 and 2013? Provide the names and beneficiaries and justification for same. "In your opinion as the minister of finance who oversees the economy, what are the implications to the country's economy? What efforts have you made to stop this waiver policy, which is distorting the economy? "Our non oil income has dropped in 2013. A case where increased tariffs on various items effectively reduced importation to zero in some sectors. However, those items now find their way into Nigeria through our borders. "Does it make any sense to increase these tariffs when we have such porous borders? As an example, officially, Togo imported more rice this year than Nigeria. "Do you really believe that Nigeria needs a 'Sovereign Wealth Fund' at this critical juncture of budgetary deficits, and having to be borrowing extensively in an effort to address government revenue gaps? "Shouldn't the presence of Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) simply mean spreading government's scarce resources thinly? Why will you insist that no matter what, we still need to operate a sovereign wealth fund? "Sincerely speaking, how sustainable are the objectives of Nigeria's Sovereign Wealth Fund, particularly in the long-term? You should agree that a lot of Nigerians are interested in the link between NSIA and the government. "Since there is no doubt that Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority is an agent of government - or is it not? The question is: How should we think about the management structure in so far as major decisions are concerned? "Where is the line between NSIA, as a commercially minded entity, and the government, especially given government's policy of having no business doing business? If, for example, government does not get involved in specific investments, then, who appoints the external managers involved in managing some parts of the NSIA funds? "Who determines the investment objective and who establishes the risk parameter for the NSIA's portfolio? In providing answer to this question, it is also important to understand and explain why NSIA recently hired a Swiss national as its chief portfolio investor? "Answering this question is important since it should help us to know who determines the maximum draw-down that the government would be comfortable with in extremely negative market environments. "Do you agree that the Excess Crude Account (ECA) as being operated by government is illegal and unconstitutional, especially given how it has been managed? "Can you explain with clarity how the ECA is being operated? Also, provide a statement of account of the ECA from 2011 to 2013? Also, how much have we made in excess of the benchmark price from January 2013 till date? "If there is nothing like Excess Crude Account, would you have been demanding lower oil price benchmark for the budget, especially when the executive arm of government around the world is known for demanding more money from lawmakers in order to be able to meet government spending obligations, particularly capital spending? "Why is the reverse the case in Nigeria only, notably since 2011? With respect to the Excess crude account and our Sovereign Wealth Fund again, there have been allegations and counter allegations on its legality. "Assuming, for the sake of the committee's enlightenment, the FGN alone saved its own excess in its ECA/SWF (which is about 52% of the Federation Account) and the states and local governments get their funds in full compliance with the constitution, what would be the effect on the economy?" |
This interview had been conducted by Premium Times before President of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, Muhajid Asari-Dokubo was arrested in Benin Republic in late November, 2013. Here, he touches upon such subjects as Jonathan's chances at winning in 2015, oil stealing, Governor Amaechi's betrayal, among other things. On "bloodshed" in Nigeria: If you look at the attacks that have been directed at Goodluck since it became apparent that he was going to become President since 2010, certain individuals, especially the Ciromas, Lawal Kaita, General Muhammadu Buhari, General Ibrahim Babangida, have also made several statements. I quote: Lawal Kaita said, "It is the turn of the North to produce the president, that if Jonathan by default wins the nomination of the PDP, we will stop him at the general elections. If we fail to stop him at the general election, even if he wins he will not be able to rulel we will make the country ungovernable for him." Nobody has a monopoly of violence. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. We cannot sit, fold our hands and watch. If we had done that, Goodluck Jonathan would have been killed long time ago. He comes from a place that feeds the nation. Nigeria is only existing because of Ijaw, Ogoni, Itsekiri, Isoko, Ibo and Urhobo oil. Nigeria is only existing because of its access to the coast provided by the Ijaws, Itskeri and the Yorubas. Nigeria would have become a landlocked country. So we contribute to the survival of Nigeria. All these men have gained from the misnomer called Nigeria because Nigeria claims to be a Federal Republic but it's not, it's a very crude primitive state where we have an all-powerful centre. [In] the last interview I granted, I said it on Channels television, there was no such thing. I said, and I repeat, and I have no apology to anybody, that those who said that the blood of the monkeys, baboons, dogs and if they want to soak them on the water we will help them to soak the blood of the baboons and the dogs on the street; if they want to soak them in water we will help them. That was my statement. On presidential pardon and amnesty: I was president of Ijaw Youth Council, which is the biggest youth group up till date, and I'm also the leader of the Niger Delta Peoples' Volunteer Force and Niger Delta Peoples' Salvation Funds. Did I tell you that I collected amnesty? I am not a criminal. I don't know what you are talking about. Asari isn't a criminal. I am not a militant and I have a pedigree and I cannot soil my name. If the Nigerian state has any evidence to criminalize me, they should go to court. They've done that several times and they failed without evidence. Yes, people who took amnesty have been criminalized, that's what it means. You pardon someone who has committed an offence, not all of them were criminals. But if you accept pardon as a criminal, why will I speak for you? You have accepted willingly. I did not collect amnesty and the majority of my people did not. Only those who broke away from us did. I was granted bail by a competent court of jurisdiction and I am still on bail. I employed my lawyers. We went to the Supreme Court for bail application and for the first time in my life, the court suspended the constitution of this country because of me. The court says people can be arrested and be detained as long as the government wants. It's a shame on the judiciary of this country that the Supreme Court gave a judgment suspending the constitution. That's why some of us feel Goodluck is playing with these political miscreants who call themselves governors. If I was hit with the hammer by Obasanjo, what is holding Goodluck Jonathan? He should hit these political miscreants with a hammer. Obasanjo should be arrested and detained, and Atiku, too. They are ordinary citizens of this country. They are nobody. I don't know about Babangida [because] he has not come out to talk about where he belongs. The government first refused to bring me to court. Yar'Adua was compelled to release me from prison because of the bribe, because of the oil, that they want production which had fallen into 600,000 barrels. Nigeria was losing money, so they wanted to release Asari but I refused to sign. So many things were offered me but I said no and I refused to sign. Henry Okah and others signed. My mother died at the age of 29. I'm 50. My father died at the age 59. I'm 50. So, why should I be afraid of death? It will come when it will come. When God says you are going to die, you will die. So I cannot mortgage my integrity, my honour, my pedigree and that of my children. On the amnesty programme of Jonathan's administration, and the fact that his friends are beneficiareis: I am one of the people who have been against amnesty. Amnesty is a crime against humanity. That someone raped, killed, committed all sorts of crime and after doing that, because you want money, mostly to steal, then you pardon the person. A man kidnapped another man, put him through trauma and you pardon him. A man raped and you pardon him. A man killed and you pardon him because you want money. My friends and I are not the same. My child and I are not the same, even my wife. None of my siblings took amnesty and NDPVF didn't take amnesty. God has a way of preparing things since the time of creation. On meeting with Major Hamza Al-Mustapha: You cannot divorce politics from whatever man is doing. Even between man and woman, politics is involved. The meeting with Al-Mustapha is to bring peace. Faseun, Uwazuruike, Yerima Shettima, Abacha, Tony Major and over 50 different organisations were there. Government wants to be oblivious of what is going on. It is a tsunami. It is the first time that people from the Caliphate, Borno and people from other part of this country are meeting. People have come to say "look, whatever has happened before we should put it aside, have a focus and put an eye on the future." All of us have suffered from one form of deprivation or the other. All of us have been in prison - myself, Pa Faseun, Uwazuruike, Al-Mustapha, Mohammed. We have been imprisoned at one time or the other. We have all suffered one form of deprivation or the other. Our collective suffering should be a sacrifice to bring hope to our people. We met and we saw the sincerity in them. Some people say I hate the North, but I laugh. They say I hate the Fulanis, Kanuris and I find that funny. I have two boys, and their mother is a Fulani, living among Kanuri people from Borno state. One of them is named after me - Mujahid Dokubo, and the other one is Nurul-Islam. They have been living with their mother. My son even speaks Hausa and Fulfude. He doesn't even know how to speak my language. I am married to a Shuwa Arab also from Borno Empire. My in-laws come to my house, eat, sleep, live in my house and we do things together. When it comes to protecting the interest of my people, it is beyond me because of my personal life. So if people want to kill my people, I should fold my hands because I'm married to a Fulani woman? When everyone dies, it will remain only my two sons and myself. God created me an Ijaw man for a purpose. On whether he supports the President because he is also an Ijaw: They say charity begins at home. Goodluck is an Ijaw man, who will I support? Prophet Mohammed said whether your brother is right or wrong, support him. And the people asked why you should support your brother when he is wrong. The Prophet said support him by correcting him. I am one of the most fiery, balanced critics of Goodluck, inside and outside the house. When the President does anything wrong and I don't have access to him, I come out and shout at the roof top that he should fix things and they will start fixing it. The most important thing is that he is an Ijaw man. There is no compromise on that. As president of Ijaw Youth Council, I'm to protect their interest. I'm an Ijaw man and I will protect their interest. In terms of performance, if you put Nigerian past leaders together, he has outperformed them. The Benin-Lagos Expressway is now passable. Obasanjo was there for eight years, he didn't fix it. Abdulsalami was there, and also Abacha. During IBB's time, the road was okay. Look at the Abuja- Lokoja Expressway. They budgeted for it every year. In all the eight years of Obasanjo, they didn't go more than 5km on that road and money was budgeted, appropriated, misapplied and misappropriated. The road was comatose. Under Yar'Adua, they said N500 billion was released for special agricultural funds on a piece of paper, but nobody saw the money till today. Nigeria agricultural sector has come alive and everybody knows that. The investment profile of Nigeria has increased. The Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) profile has increased. On insecurity: Nigeria is in a civil orchestrated by the Ciromas and the Kaitas trying to breath evil right on the back of a tiger. Abeg he go enter tiger belle. In Niger Delta, we have organization on the ground to put heads and balancing that when they put order everybody fall in line. We have order. But in the North, they don't have the capacity because of years of deprivation of their people. The billion they made over this years doesn't translate to the life of the ordinary northerners. The northerners are the poorest, the northerners are the most diseased, there is a lot of underdevelopment in the North. After years of looting so they have no control over their people so when they were thinking Boko Haram will be their own militia, their own militants they didn't know how far Boko Haram will go. I schooled at Gamboru Gala. I learnt Quran there. Today Gamboru Gala is a no- go area. On President's possible actions: Goodluck Jonathan should declare a war in Nigeria. The country is in a state of war. Foreigners are coming into Nigeria, encouraged by the Ciromas and the Kaitas. These men should be arrested. They are the people who have come out to say they are displeased and they have done it and its happening. They should be arrested. They say if Goodluck wins they will make the country ungovernable for him and it has happened. If a witch says he will kill you today and tomorrow you have headache, it is the witch that caused it. The president should declare a war against these men. They have all apparatuses of a state. They are not ashamed. They said as far as they are concerned they are at war. Obasanjo brought helicopters to bomb my camp for 11 months we fought. In which state where he declared a state of emergency did he allow the political structure to remain? How will the president be playing with a life when we know and politicians from Borno state have accused SAS (Senator Ali Modu Sherif) that he's responsible for setting up Boko Haram and he is a stalwart of APC. So why will the president be playing with them with kids gloves? If I was put in prison, why should Ciroma not be out in prison. Why will Kaita and SAS not be put in prison? As for IBB, one statement or the other that he made is not enough for him to be put in jail. After that, he has made many mitigating statements. Goodluck Jonathan should use hammer against those political miscreants. They are all miscreants and hammer must be used against them. There is only one registered PDP known to INEC and its only PDP. Jonathan is indulging. If you break the law you should be treated as a lawbreaker. On relationship with Chibuike Amaechi: Let me tell you - Amaechi is a traitor, a traitor to all people of the South-South and South East. I've said it over and over when this thing started that as a traitor you will be treated as a traitor. Goodluck is shielding him. The president is not even fighting him. If Goodluck were fighting Amaechi, by now he would not go to Port Harcourt again. Many people have made sacrifices. Ken Saro Wiwa fought for our people. This man who calls himself Amaechi, who never won election, is a miscreant. We know his origin. He was Peter Odili's "houseboy" that Odili imposed on the people of Ikwerre Constituency without winning election. They collectively deceived the people of South- South. We were all student union leaders. I'm older than him. Can Amaechi win election in his unit? Has Amaechi ever supported Goodluck? This is how you indulge this criminal, common criminal who is supposed to be in prison. How did he get over one million votes? It's rigging. I voted for Goodluck. Immediately after the election the position of PDP was that the South West should take the speakership seat. Amaechi and his people he brought to the National Assembly by manipulation supported Aminu Tambuwal and that is why they are heading important committees in the National Assembly. These are the characters working with this miscreant that we are indulging. On Jonathan-Amaechi opposition: I have already told you that all the PDP legislators that came from Rivers State stood against the president and supported Tambuwal. The problem started since then. The only president that can be compared to Goodlcuk in Nigeria is Shagari. He is peaceful, he has human feelings and he doesn't want to hurt an ant. Amaechi and Adams Oshiomhole from the South-South have projected that if Goodluck is the president for the next four years, they will become irrelevant. They will be out of power for four years. Oshhiolome will be out of power for two years plus. Oshiomhole is my brother, but when it comes to standing with the president, friendship has got nothing to do. If oshiomhole is going for the presidency today, I will stake my life for him. But if he wants to go and join people because of political agenda or survival, we should jettison sacrifice and die for the South-South. So if Goodluck does not come back, anyone of them will aspire for the position of Senate President or the Speaker. Oshimhole is level headed than this small boy, Amaechi. He is not doing his own like a matured person, same as Rochas Okorocha. If Goodluck can complete eight years, they believe there is the likelihood that the presidency will go up to the north, that is if he wins the second term which I know he will. The political interest of our people is at stake. They will chase Rochas Okorocha away. Rochas is a goner and he knows it and he will go. That is why some of us are going to be aggressive with Goodluck. There is no begging, there's no retreat, no surrender. We are not taking any Prisoner of War. It is going to be total vanquish, no Prisoner of War. This one is do or die. We are fighting for our soul and our survival now. They have aligned with Tinubu and we are going to see how it goes if Goodluck will contest. Let's see how you will pass Goodluck and sit in Aso Rock. It is not about weapons to fight. Everything will be glaring and we will see it clearly. We heard Amacehi has been buying guns for the people. It is human beings that will shoot those guns. When the time comes we will see. Oshimhole is very mild. He opens ways for reconciliation, but Amaechi is not allowing reconciliation. He has reached the point of no return. On the opposition of some PDP chieftains against President Goodluck Jonathan: Kwankwaso is in charge of Kano. What is Goodluck's business in Kano? They printed Kwankwaso with Buhari's posters in Kano. Whether he's behind him or not, they will not win the election. I don't know whether he is part of it or not. Kwankwaso support is nothing. Atiku has started singing a new song. He said Goodluck could contest in 2015. I read it [in the newspapers] . I read it somewhere that Obasanjo is the problem of the PDP. Bukola Saraki did not support Goodluck; he was a presidential candidate. It is that same grudge that he is bearing against Goodluck. Each of the states has its own political colouration. Goodluck didn't win any state in the North East and North West zones. People forget so soon. He got two-thirds of 36 states. He will have the two-thirds and win the 2015 presidential election. The election is concluded, it is a foregone conclusion. When they are contesting election in the USA they will tell who will win. We have done our calculations, and we know Goodluck has already won. If Goodluck won the last election with six million votes, now it will be 10 million votes. Most of them will start begging very soon and some have started begging. On the drop in revenue in Nigeria: He who owns the land owns everything on the land and above the land. The Niger Delta people own all the things on the land and above the land in accordance with equity. They can't steal what belongs to them. In accordance with equity and good conscience and natural justice, we will continue to have problems. You can't take it from the Niger Delta and bring it to build houses in Abuja and go and develop Lagos and create Dangote, Otedola, Adenuga, Emeka Offor and even create Dokubo- Asari. There must be natural justice and great conscience Somebody sitting there at the National Assembly is opposing the Petroleum Industry Bill, a bill that will give more capacity to the oil producing communities. On Niger Deltans stealing oil: The oil belongs to them. They have the right to take it. My problem is the environmental degrading that comes with taking of the oil. They have the right to take it, but have no right to destroy the environment. RELATED ARTICLE: |
APC To Assume House Leadership 02.01.2014, 6:11 Politics Share this story There are strong indications that the All Progressives Congress, APC, may, on resumption from recess of the House of Representatives on January 13, 2014, assume the leadership of the House from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. This, however, may not affect the offices of the speaker and deputy speaker respectively. The impending development is followed by the defection of 37 members of the PDP to APC late last month. Speculations had been rife since December 2013, shortly before the House went on Christmas break, that the change would have occurred. A member of the House and PDP decampee said the first quarter of the new year would herald changes that would affect the leadership structure of the House. He said: "Within the House, 2014 will be a remarkable year for Nigeria, remarkable in the sense that, of course, the trend which began in late 2013 in terms of power shift will continue and what that means is that APC should be able to get the requisite 181 members which gives it complete majority. When that happens chances are that the leadership will shift from PDP to APC. "APC has between 172 to 174 members in the House. And what we just need, I think is between 8 and 9 new members in terms of those crossing from PDP to APC. And that will be the APC requisite that will shape the House and points the future direction of the House. "But what is certain is that if everything does not change, the leadership, the majority leader will need to relinquish that position because at the end of the day, a party cannot be in the minority and still hold the position of the Majority Leader." President Goodluck Jonathan said yesterday that Nigeria has the potentials to lead Africa if public office holders, politicians and indeed, the citizenry, stop being selfish. The President recalled his encounter with United States President Barack Obama when the latter revealed that about 25, 000 medical consultants work in the U.S., the number which the US leader said, was crucial to the American economy. photo Jonathan said that Nigeria has what it takes to lead the African continent, considering the country's human and natural resources. The President spoke at the New Year service held at Our Lady Queen of Nigeria Pro-Cathedral, Catholic Church in Area 3, Abuja. The service was attended by dignitaries including Senate President David Mark. He challenged politicians to plan for the next generation instead of wasting all energies on their own personal interests, adding that there was no need for anyone to heat up the polity in the struggle for political offices as the Constitution does not back life tenure for president and governors except members of the National Assembly. Jonathan said Nigeria has great potentials to lead Africa as was observed by world leaders including President Obama, assuring that he was convinced that this year would be better than 2013. "All what we need to do is to make sure that we continue to do things rightly. That is why I always plead with my fellow politicians that yes, we must play the politics, but let us take the interest of the country more than our own individual interest. And as we continue to play the politics in that direction, leaders will come and go, but the country will stay. "Luckily, we have a Constitution that says that nobody will be a governor or president forever. It is only in the parliament that you can be there till you die. As long as we consider the interest of our country, children, grandchildren and we begin to plan for the next generation instead of wasting all our energies to think about ourselves, before we get to the next 100 years, the country will be better. Nigeria can even change in the next few years and things will be better for everybody." On security, he again said Nigeria is not an isolated case, assuring that the country will certainly overcome the challenges. "Just like Senate President David Mark mentioned, the world as a whole is facing a lot of challenges within this period. If you switch on your television and if you flip through the newspapers, there are always breaking news and the breaking news are not positive news. Whenever I see breaking news, you know there is one crisis somewhere in the world. "We are reading about crises everywhere. And our country too, unfortunately, we also have our own fair share of crises. There is the issue of Boko Haram and the excesses of the militia groups, kidnapping in southern Nigeria. Boko Haram terrorist activities in the northern part of the country, but government is committed to bring this to an end", he said. On the economy, the President said: "As we enter the New Year, we will surely get our economy to continue to move in the right direction and in the direction we want it to move. We shall continue to work hard to make sure that not just that the economy will be growing based on economic parameters and indices, but that jobs are available for our young men and women and that food is cheap in our markets for ordinary people to buy and eat. That is the commitment of government". To deliver more dividends of democracy and good governance, he promised to work hard with the National Assembly, his cabinet and other officers of government. "Despite our challenges, all what we continue to request from you is your continuous prayers because we believe and luckily we are in a Christian congregation, we believe that no matter what an individual think he is, if God doesn't want you to succeed in achieving anything, you will not. You will get so close to it but at the end of the day, you will not get it. "I remember the second time I met President Obama after 2011 elections, he said that Nigeria has the potentials to lead Africa and Nigeria has the potential to be a great country. He said in America, we have over 25,000 Nigerian medical consultants working in the health system, not just people with MBBS but consultants, over 25,000. And that today, if all these Nigerians leave, they will have a lot of challenges in the health system of America. And that is the President of the number one country now. He believes that Nigeria has a lot of potentials." On Nigeria's centenary celebration, he said: "Surely, the country will get to where it wants to get to. Today is a special day, very special. January 1, 2014 because we have been informing you that the amalgamation of our country to what we now call Nigeria happened on the 1st of January, 1914. Today, modern Nigeria is one hundred years old." "The formal ceremony will take place by late February, the programme will soon be advertised for all Nigerians to see and know the areas they will participate because it is a programme for all of us. All the religious houses will be involved in one form of prayer or the other." "So, today, we are not just celebrating the new year but we are also celebrating a special new year. A new year that Nigeria, modern Nigeria is 100 years. And we use this period to begin to think what will be Nigeria in the next 100 years", Jonathan said. |
Nigeria plays Mali on January 11 in Cape Town in the first match of CHAN 2014 in South Africa. However, the decision on who will represent the nation at the tournament has just been made. According to MTNFootball.com, the Super Eagles handlers have dropped injured Gambo Mohammed and Yinka Adedeji from participating in CHAN. Both players have since left the Eagles' training camp. The highly-rated Pillars star Gambo, who featured for Nigeria at the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil, has been nursing a hamstring injury, which has kept him by the sidelines since the Eagles resumed training for CHAN earlier this month. Adedeji also suffered a hamstring injury at the weekend. Golden Eaglets goalkeeper Dele Alampasu is also set to be in South Africa as third-choice goalkeeper after FC Taraba goalkeeper Ibrahim Pius was axed, but his Eaglet teammate Taiwo Awoniyi did not make the final cut. A new Enyimba signing Mfom Udoh, who was a late call-up to the Eagles after his goals for Akwa United last season, was also dropped. SEE the final squad below: Goalkeepers: Chigozie Agbim (Enugu Rangers), Daniel Akpeyi (Heartland), Dele Alampasu (Abuja Football College). Defenders: Solomon Kwambe (Sunshine Stars); Francis Benjamin (Heartland), Azubuike Egwuekwe (Warri Wolves), Kunle Odunlami (Sunshine Stars), Ikechukwu Gabriel (Bayelsa United), Umar Zango (Kano Pillars), Bright Esieme (Enyimba), Erhun Obanor (Insurance FC). Midfielders: Ugonna Uzochukwu (Enugu Rangers), Rabiu Ali (Kano Pillars), Christian Pyagbara (Sharks), Ikenna Hilary (Sunshine Stars), Abdullahi Shehu (Kano Pillars), Joshua Obaje (Warri Wolves). The All Progressives Congress (APC) has assured Nigerians that the party is ready, willing and determined to make all the necessary sacrifices to reverse the prevailing gloomy situation in the country and bring about the much-needed change for the better in the interest of the long-suffering citizens. In a statement issued in Lagos on Tuesday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said Nigerians should go into the New Year with an unyielding commitment to be part of ongoing efforts to set the country on the path of growth and development, rather than get into a state of funk on the basis of the cumulative mis-governance of the past 14 years by the PDP-led Federal Government. ''While wishing all Nigerians a great 2014, we hereby solicit their unalloyed support for our efforts to reshape the country's political landscape, shake off the heavy yoke imposed on them by their selfish, self-serving and clueless leaders and make the country a source of pride not only to its citizens but to all black people in the world,'' it said. APC said the first step in what will be a tough but final battle to rescue Nigeria from the clutches of rapacious leaders will be to bring the citizenry on board the train of change that is barrelling through the country, and to ensure that elections in the country are free, fair and credible. ''As we wrote in the preamble to our manifesto, 'democracy, to be stable and meaningful, must be anchored on the principle that government derives its powers from the consent of the governed....This means that governments are instituted on the basis of free, fair and credible elections, and are maintained through responsiveness to public opinion. '''In addition, the exercise of political authority is rooted in the rule of law. APC believes in the doctrine of social contract between the leaders and the led; which means that the public office holder is a trustee of the people and that power must be used in the interest of the people rather than in the interest of the public office holder','' the party said. It said in order to ensure that as many Nigerians as possible are brought aboard the APC train of change, the party will kick-start its membership registration drive early in the year, targeting in particular the youth who are indispensable in any effort to bring about change. ''We ask all those who are yearning for genuine change to seize the moment and embrace the engine of change, which the APC represents! Our compatriots who have lost faith in our dear country because of inefficient and corrupt leadership can count on us, because we represent committed, transparent and focused leadership,'' APC said. The party pledged to halt the country's drift towards a failed state with a conscious plan for a post-oil economy in Nigeria, details of which will be outlined in the weeks and months ahead; and to make the welfare and security of the citizenry, which is the raison d'etre of any government, its top priority; APC said that in order to extricate Nigeria from the dire straits in which it has been plunged by the successive PDP governments, the party has decided to make as its priority the War Against Corruption; Food security; Accelerated Power Supply; Integrated Transport Network; Free Education; Devolution of Power; Accelerated Economic Growth and Affordable Health Care. ''We know skeptics will sneer at these and deride them as mere sloganeering. After all, Nigerians have been taken for a ride for the past 14 years by those who have mistaken transmogrification for transformation, and those who have relentless pursued power for the sake of power, rather than to use it to harness the country's abundant human resources. ''But most things look impossible until they have been achieved, and the impressive record of performance in the states under our control, from Kano to Imo states and from Lagos to Edo, testifies to our ability, determination and willingness to make things happen for the benefit of our people,'' the party said. Meanwhile, the party has said the year 2013 is among the worst, if not the worst, for the citizenry, who have been pauperized and dehumanized by a government that keeps touting favourable economic statistics in the face of an unprecedented fall in the standard of living of its people. ''They say President Jonathan's achievement in 2013 is unprecedented, yet Nigerians celebrated the Christmas and New Year holidays in unprecedented pitch darkness and an unprecedented number of our youths are unemployed; They say they are winning the war against corruption, yet key government officials, including the so-called Coordinating Minister of the Economy, do not even know how much Nigeria earns from crude oil and gas sales, and what happened to 12 billion dollars earned from domestic crude lifting; They are so eager to cling to any straw of 'achievement' that they are celebrating the revival of the locomotive engine in the 21st century! ''Such is their insensitivity and total lack of compassion for human beings that the Jonathan administration will rather spend the nation's scarce resources on importing animals for the villa zoo and on purchasing presidential jets that they do not need. ''Because this government has become numb to reason, because this government has deteriorated from cluelessness to hopelessness and because this government has totally lost any sense of direction, we say it is time for Nigerians to gird their loins and join hands with all those who are seeking genuine change. To adapt Mahatma Gandhi's timeless quote, Nigerians must be the change they wish to see in their country, and the year 2014 must be our Year of Change!'' APC said.
