CareerRe: Mathematicians' & Statisticians' Colloquium by zebra(m): 11:06am On Nov 22, 2010
Nigeria is a very funny country. Most Statisticians in nigeria are either not doing the job of a statistician or are jobless. where as people who read nonrelevant courses are made to be heads of statistical bureaus and departments in most ministries. Tell me how we can have reliable data and how we can plan effectively and move the country forward with this kind of attitude, putting a squared peg in a round hole?? Until our government start employing and making use of statisticians both at Federal, state and local government levels, Nigeria will not move forward.

igbo boy:
another daft girl, igbo is not the central language for these group of people (not tribes). Igbo is not just one language, there are different dialects, there is central Igbo, and other dialects, I am Ikwerre and Igbo so dont generalizae
keep quiet there, you cannot be igbo and ikwerre at the same time. you are either igbo or ikwerre. Just like some people say hausa/fulani; that's a wrong term to use in describing them. It's not possible. you are either fulani or hausa, you cannot be both. Do we have hausa/yoruba? Do we have ijaw/igbo? Do we have igbo/yoruba? And stop calling people daft when you are the one behaving like one.

Crude Oil:
Zebra, not only that they both have similar languages and names, they both have almost similar traditions and culture.
Traditionally, igbos dont have kings. Ikwerres dont have kings too. Igbos use the offor, the ikwerre do to and so many others.
Dissimilar Language is cannot be used seperate them. The people of nsukka are igbos, but i understand ikwerre more than nsukka.
i thought there is an Obi in onitsha? is he not a traditional ruler??

@zebra.if you are from greater igbo or ikwerre then u would understand.it is like saying ngwa and igbo is similar.aro and igbo is similar, item and igbo is similar, nkanu and igbo is similar, ezza and igbo is similar, ehugbo and igbo is similar, etche and igbo is similar, orsu and igbo is similar, ukwuani and igbo is similar, ika and igbo is similar, ndoki and igbo is similar.each of these sub-groups speak different versions of igbo.the centralised igbo is a mixture of many dialects including ikwerre.
igbo language is the central language for all those tribes you listed, agreed. But the ikwerre man does n't see himself as igbo, that is the issue. if you ask an ikwerre man his tribe he will say he's ikwerre and not igbo; thats the truth. other tribes you mentoned in your list will proudly tell you they are igbos at worst they say Delta igbo, but ikwerre will always say they are ikwerre and not igbo.
CultureRe: I Am Not Igbo, I Am Ikwerre! by zebra(m): 7:17am On Apr 01, 2010
Abagworo:
this ikwerre issue has been argued over and over again.what people fail to understand is that ikwerre has no separate language.igbo is not a 2nd language to an ikwerre.it is his only language.igbos can never say okrika, ogoni or kalabari is igbo even though most of them speak igbo as a 2nd language.
it's like saying hausa is fulani or fulani is hausa.
ikwerre language is similar to igbo language but not the same thing. even their culture differ a bit. igbos are enterprising people while ikwerres are not. igbos struggle to make their money through business and sometimes bad runs while ikwerre waits to take over abandon property. so how can they be the same thing?

@ RIVERSMAN, an igbo proverb says that 'nwata bulie nna ya elu ogodo ayochie ya anya' u are an ignorant man or non ikwere claiming one simply to cause confusion here. true ikweere sons and daughters have made d point known that they are IGBO, u may go hit ya big head for OLUMO rock or jump enter lagoon if u think otherwise, u are not igbo but u speak igbo and bear igbo name and ikwere as a name ain't igbo too? i pity u!
gwari, zuru, nupe, kataf, jukun and others in the north speak hausa and bear hausa names. infact hausa language is the means of communication among the minority groups in the north; does that automatically make them hausa?

Leave it alone people. Ikwerres have a massive Igbo influence in everything except for eating Eba and fried fish I don't think Igbos do that. Ikwerres have to be of Igbo extration cause of their names and dialect. Amaechi is not an Ijaw name is it? The point is Ikwerres are Igbo. An Igbo can easily speak Ikwerre and vice versa. But here is the important thing; Don't hate them cause they don't want to be Igbo they have influence from other tribes too. What does Rotimi means in Igbo? Nothing Rotimi is a Yoruba name. Ikwerres have influence from Ijaw, Ogoni and other surrounding tribes but the major influence is Igbo and Igbo land should be recognized as their mother tribe. Just identify them as Ikwerres if they don't want to be called Igbo.
Help me tell the nairaland igbos to leave ikwerre alone.
Ikwerres can easily speak and understand ibo language and it's not vice versa. Most igbos don't understand ikwerre language.

my friend even if no school admits you, just buy JAMB UTME and apply for computer science and start from 100 level. Don't go close to HND sha, that's my advice.

Thank you.

Guy, lets not decieve ourselves, Bsc holders are enjoying themselves everywhere. They give them priority in almost every industries, ministries and schools. If you are about to go for HND please i beg you in God's name to drop that idea, preferably, take JAMB again and start from 100 levels in the university; it will save you the discrimination HND holders pass through in future.

Thank you.

This is an utterly brainless analogy. As long as you were born and stay in the African continent, you are an African.

'Igbo' is an Ethnic group. wikipedia's definition below

An ethnic group is a group of people whose members identify with each other, through a common heritage that is real or assumed- sharing cultural characteristics[1][2] This shared heritage may be based upon putative common ancestry, history, kinship, religion, language, shared territory, nationality or physical appearance. Members of an ethnic group are conscious of belonging to an ethnic group; moreover ethnic identity is further marked by the recognition from others of a group's distinctiveness.

So if these fellows do not identify with you, and they are officially recognised as a separate and distinct ethnic group, why make a fuss over it? It really matters not if you share history, it's what happens today that counts.
Help me tell that daft that is trying to force another ethnic group to accept being same with his own. i wonder why some igbo people would even bother themselves about that; na wa o.
Formerly we use to look at minorities from the north like Plateau, southern kaduna, niger, bauchi, adamawa, nasarawa, etc. as hausas. But these groups today have come out to say they are not hausas and that is what is happening today, they are not hausas. But prior to the nigeria civil war they had that single identity, "hausa". can you force the birom man now to say he is hausa? can you force the southern-kaduna man now to say he is hausa? can you force the gwari man to say he is hausa? can you force southern-borno people and adamawa to accept hausa identity today?

Why can't the ikwerres refuse to be igbos too?

When I said many Ikwerres don't see themselves as Igbos many Igbos thought I was Igbo bashing. Jus see them as your fellow Nigerians. They can deny the fact that they have Igbo ancestry cause their language and even names proves they do but they just don't see themselves as Igbos. Just love them for who they are.
The same thing happened to me, I told them in one of the threads that no ikwerre man sees himself as igbo, they almost crucified me. Now here it is coming from an ikwerre man that they are not igbos; yet some igbo people here are still insulting him. Is it now by force to become igbo??
This happens whenever the CDS is not from the ARMY irrespective of his the tribe or region .

In the days of agwai, ogomudia, azazi it was not so. The rivalry amongst the forces always put a non-army CDS at a disadvantaged position.
Not true. Air Marshal al-Amin Daggash was a CDS (The first Air force officer to hold that position - during Gen Abdulasalam's regime). Also Admiral Ibrahim Ogohi held that post too during OBJ's regime in 1999. They had all the priviledges of a CDS and were well respected by all members of the armed forces (Army, Navy & Air Force).

i believe it's a tribal thing; you must come from the north before you can earn enoff respect.

i used to live on the airforce base and some of the officers who were student pilots were my friends.

It depends, sometimes because of bad weather they extend their training. sometimes if the aircrafts have problem they extend the training; but ab-initio plus basic flying should not take more than 18 months, after which you go for advance flying. The NAF presently has a good number of pilots who were trained abroad as either figther or transport/operational pilots.

@ Spyker

The Nigerian Air Force does NOT operate the Dash 8, but brand new ATR-42 Maritime patrol aircrafts. Please get your facts straight.
It's not the ATR-42 that crash landed; it's a G-222. The ATR-42 is used for maritime patrol and air recce, and its base is benin-city. The G-222 has its base in ilorin. I called one of the ATR pilots yesterday who confirmed to me that it was a G-222 that crashed landed during a mock excercise in PH. The pilots involved are experience pilots who after their basic flying training in nigeria went abroad to qualify as transport pilots; The captain of that flight is a Group Captain while the co-pilot is a Wing Commander. I know both of them very well when they were fling in NAF flying school in kaduna. i doubt if the crash was a human error.
