Thank God Nairaland doesn't truly represent Nigerian's opinions, as our brothers portray it here. When something is bad, it is totally bad. No sane man will ever repatriate a sane man.
Our Igbo brothers say Yoruba hate them, reek insults at them at will, but that will never affect the hospitable nature of these people. That nature makes Yoruba not to grow hostility at foreigners, contrary to what are being propagated here and there. Reminds me of a situation in Osun State, not Lagos State, where an Igbo man contested for a councillorship position in his Local Council. The said man didn't marry a Yoruba woman, talk less of saying he was using the influence. When asked why he wanted to contest in another man's land, he said he had lived in that town (Ikirun or so) for good 20 years and everyone had been good to him and respected him and he also had respect for the culture and of the people and the land, andthe people saw him as an Igboman and also a Yorubaman. Though he didn't win the election, yet he was given an opportunity to contest with the locals of the land. Which tribe can do that in Nigeria?
In Yorubaland, an Ibadan indigene won't say because he is a Yorubaman, he has to defy the custom of Ondoland or Ijebuland. It's not done that way. He will still regard himself as a Yorubaman in a Yorubaland, but not to question the authority of that land he sojourns or resides.
Let's not politicize issues.

Gov. Fashola's DAMAGE CONTROL goes on, after he had done his worse. 14 or 70 or 72 or 65 persons does it matter? What matters is that Gov.Fashola-led government dropped those he called destitute humans at nobody's care in Onitsha. In other words, Gov.Fashola deported humans from Lagos to Onitsha.

Ibos are only special in their own eyes, other tribes see them as pest.
Lagos is helping ibo men and women earn a living,Ibos are inconsequential to Lagos-just part of the numbers.

I have followed this topic for a while and indeed I weep for this nation called Nigeria. I weep for Nigeria because her only hope of becoming a great nation lie in its people. But it is evident that the people of Nigeria no matter where they hail from do not believe in the nation. They believe that individual nations are congregated together in the Nigerian project and as such the Nigerian project is a cake which must go round. The Nigerian people don't care to hold elected office holders accountable for their actions as long as those public office holders are from natives of their native nation.

After taking a critical look at the whole deportation saga, I am of the opinion that the Lagos state government is totally wrong in its actions and have grossly abused the fundamental human rights of these deportees or involuntary returnees as the case may be.

First they went about picking people from the streets claiming they were either beggars, mad people or hawkers. A state is governed by laws and laws are interpreted in court and offenders are punished by the courts. I do not know the law of Lagos state the beggars and hawkers have violated but assuming there exists such laws. Such offenders must be charged to court and the courts will prescribe appropriate punishment. In the entire responses given out by the Lagos state governor and the documents presented so far, I have not seen anywhere it was mentioned that these people were charged to court and made to appear before a judge. These people must be made to appear before a judge and must be given lawyers to defend them. If they are found guilty they will be handed over to the prison authorities and after serving their time, it is the prison authorities that have the expertise and rights to seek ways of re integrating them back into their communities. This the state did not do, rather it simply went about looking for ways to send them back from where they came from. The logical conclusion derived herein is that the intention of the LASG in carrying out the sweep was with a view to return poor people back to where they came from rather than to punish law offenders.

Secondly if the victims were mad people as claimed by the LASG, what does any reasonable person or government do when he meets a mad person on the streets - Take him to the psychiatric hospital for treatment and after treatment seek a way to reintegrate them back into families that can take care of them or put them permanently in welfare homes if there are no families anywhere coming forward to take responsibility. This was what Akwa Ibom did to the Lagos state indigenes that were mad according to the documents shown here. In the Akwa Ibom case There was evidence of them been kept in a hospital not a cell, and secondly there were doctors report to show they were been catered for in a hospital. In the Akwa Ibom case, the Akwa Ibom people did not hurriedly carry them to Lagos and drop them off at the Ojota Bridge rather they waited till Lagos state officials came and picked up their people. What purpose does the LASG serve by picking a mad person up in one bridge and after detention dropping them off in another bridge. The logical conclusion here therefore is that the intention of picking up the mad people from the streets in lagos is not to treat them as sick people but to send them back to where they came from.

While understanding that there could be no other reason behind Dr. Chris Ngige and his Aka Ikenga Group's show of solidarity with the Governor of Lagos State on this issue rather than political convenience. Lets us all remember that any of the victims could have been any body's relative. Society's world over are governed by laws and not the wishful feelings and thoughts of members of its government and any government that sweeps people off its streets without necessary laws to back that action is tyrannical.
In this instance I wish to tell the Lagos state Governor in case he does not know that arrested street beggars and hawkers belong to the civil courts not detention cells/camps then another bridge and arrested mad people belong to the hospitals and welfare homes not Head Bridge or Upper Iweka bridge. I have no other conclusion than to say that the actions of the Lagos state government in this instance can to the barest minimum be described as selective tyranny and injustice to the less privileged.

Fashola Receives One Day Governor, Miss Lilian Ogbuefi At Alausa
…Says Lagos will always give fair opportunity to all

Jun 25, 2012 - Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Monday received the 2012 One Day Governor of the State and winner of the Spelling Bee Competition, Miss Lilian Ogbuefi at the Executive Council Chambers of the State House Alausa, stating that the state decided to resuscitate the various literacy skills enhancing programmes because they have proved to be useful building blocks of character.

The Governor who spoke when he received the One Day Governor who was accompanied by some members of her cabinet added that the various programmes like the schools debate, schools quiz have all proved their worth since they were reintroduced.

He said the fact that the winner is a product of a public school is a reaffirmation of the industry that has gone into the revitalization of public schools by the state government despite the fact that it cannot compel people on what choice to make between a public school and a private school for their wards.

He added that even if the government cannot force people to take their wards to public schools it is committed to ensuring that it provides standards that are comparable with the best in the private schools stressing that it is not ready to abdicate that responsibility.

Governor Fashola noted that the emergence of Miss Ogbuefi underscores the fact that Lagos State will always give fair opportunity to everyone who chose to live and work here irrespective of where he or she hails from.

The Governor said the fact that Miss Ogbuefi had once won a quiz competition where he presented her the award underscores the fact that she worked her way to the present glorious opportunity.

He added that there have been many past winners of the competition who have gone ahead to become outstanding students and leaders with some graduating from the University with First Class honours and some Second Class honours.

He charged Miss Ogbuefi to note that this is just the beginning and that life is all about reaching for greater heights by finding the inner motivation to record better performance noting that she cannot afford to lie at ease.

The Governor explained that part of the exposure expected from the winning of the Spelling Bee Competition is that it connects the very best young ones to what governance is all about so that they know what it takes for governmental decisions to be arrived at.

Governor Fashola opined that the earlier the young generation connects with what the government is doing at the seat of power the better for the state, adding that he hopes Miss Ogbuefi will have a sense of connection that one day she too will want to serve.

He gave a commitment that the list of requirements made by the One Day Governor for her school would be worked upon by the Commissioner for Education and her team whilst also taking cognizance of other schools' requirements in the state.

He added that all the State demands from residents is for them to pay their taxes regularly and contribute to the development of the community.

To the runners- up in the competition who emerged as members of the Cabinet, the Governor urged them to always note that there is always an opportunity for someone to emerge as the champion.

He said they should not settle for being the second best but resolve to go back and rededicate themselves to ensure that they continue to improve themselves.

Speaking earlier after being ushered into the Executive Council Chambers by State Government Officials including the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Chief of Staff, Mr Olukunle Ojo and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Mrs Omolara Erogbogbo, Miss Lilian Ogbuefi commended the State Government for the wonderful transformation which it has brought about in education, transportation, security and road networks in the State.

Miss Ogbuefi who received a standing ovation from members of the State Executive Council for her masterful command of English Language lauded the government for the infrastructural development across the state, saying: "I can proudly say that Lagos public School is the best and the students can shine any time anywhere".

She commended the innovation that has been brought about in terms of academic competition in Lagos State and also gave kudos to the New Era Foundation for the opportunity which she said has brought her to lime light and enable her to mount the 'hot seat'.

The One-Day Governor also made a case for the provision of a 250KVA generator and school bus for her school the State Senior Model College, Kankon, Badagry so as to enhance learning in the school.

The 16 year-old winner of the 2012 Spelling Bee Competition, Miss Lilian Ogbuefi, who was accompanied by her parents also had other members of her cabinet which included: the Deputy Governor, Miss Ireti Ogedengbe; Speaker of the House of Assembly, Master Chibueze Jonathan; Secretary to the State Government, Miss Temitope Fumilayo; Commissioner for Education, Master Moutoe Samto, Commissioner for Health, Master Olebi Favour and Commissioner for Science and Technology, Master Okeke Chima Obi.
