Aba has even assumed a euphemism for the possibilities of the spirit of home grown technology. In so many neighborhoods in lasgidi are corner shops of wonderful small scale manufacturers- shoemakers many a graduate of the Aba technology whose products u dorn when 'fine boy ' you 'track' kemi, Nneka or Rejoice.

Charity begins at home. Aba should be making shoes for the military for starters. The FG should allow the duty free importation of cutting edge footwear machinery to boost the standard and quality control of locally made footwear. At the same time they should raise the duties on all imported footwear to at least 100% cost price in order to encourage buy local footwear. It's nice to say proudly made in Aba... but how do we know they are? No branding... very poor promotion, advertising and marketing of products. I see the tall tan construction boots..... how on earth do I get a pair if interested? No doubt. .. the footwear are very durable ... much more than most big name brands on the market but quality control is the set back.

I also want to suggest the government agencies getting a brand ambassador like the successful stars from Abia state like Kanu Nwankwo, basket mouth, Don jazzy and J martins to brand Aba shoes and become brand ambassadors of the Aba shoes and watch sales hit the roof top.

There is really a lot to do, the governor of abia state as the chief marketing officer of the state should be visiting some key states where the Aba brand will be launched with the brand ambassadors using their skills to show case these products.

Having retail outlets where distributors, retailers can get these products will also assist like a warehouse in key regions of Commerce . Also friendly states can also promote these products in their states while abia reciprocates. For instance anambra and abia can partner, abia to promote and patronize anambra cars while anambra can promote and patronize abia shoes of the same contract.

The abia and Ebonyi government can get into bilateral trade agreements for rice and shoes instead of Ebonyi importing shoes and bags for staff they buy from abia while abia should purchase all its rice from Ebonyi.

Eastern states are not cooperative enough.


The government should also leverage on the affordability to offer free shoes to pupils, primary and secondary school students who perform academically very well.

Documentaries also on the aba shoes should be made and made available freely on the Internet.
Calendars, diaries should be used to highlight these products and given free to friends of the state

Many guys who claim ABA shoes are fake but patronise shoes from Dubai are in for a surprise. Aba shoes are exported to the free market of Dubai only to be re-imported to Nigeria in fantastic Dubai packaging.

These smart guys end up making more profit on the supposed foreign shoes just because some people do not appreciate what they have locally.

My suggestion is to take these shoe samples to the developed countries like Britain, United States, Canada, Germany etc, they will carry out a quality of products test on these shoes and once these shoes pass the test an export corridor like the AGOA would be opened between Aba and the United States, Britain, Canada and Germany.

Aba would now compete with China for American shoes market.


Quality assurance should be taken very seriously,
Training and capacity building for the skilled workers, provision of capital at very little interest rates for purchase of equipment and machines.
The construction of industrial clusters where these things can be made and packaged very well for export.

The access to the sea via aba sea port or akwa ibom sea port for easy export of products and import of raw materials.

If Aba gets 10% of the shoe industry of the developed world that would be making more than 100 million shoes coupled with the ones they make for local consumption it would become a real shoe cluster.

Shoes will become to aba what watches became to Switzerland

But we want the boys to get adequate training in best places out there, come back home ,form a cluster get all d supports like financial/ machinery ,which AGOA or BOI gives for examples, n produce cheap but quality shoes in mass so that we can b self sufficient first before exporting.

Whenever I'm on nairaland to read articles/comments, I have mixed feelings, depending on the nature of the article. Some comments are funny, some give me hope for tomorrow, some make me feel hopeless for this country (but it won't stop me from praying and hoping things will get better), some comments even make me angry.
I am a Nigerian in my late 20s. I am from the North-East, because that's where my dad is from, while my mum is from the Niger-Delta. I am privileged to have lived in Ibadan (though I have no memories of that time), Kaduna, Yola, Benin, Lagos, Enugu/Abakaliki and Port Harcourt, where I currently work (by the way, I was born in Port Harcourt). I also schooled in the Jos, Warri and the UK.
It pains me in my spirit when I read how Nigeria has been religiously and ethnically sectionalised. A lot of people on here are so bigoted to the point it has clouded their sense of reasoning. Truth is all these didn't start today. It started right from the 50s (and I stand corrected, as I'm no history student, but an engineer by training and profession). The onus is on us to put aside this sectional attitude and become objective in our criticism and judgement of each other, because it is the bane of our development as a nation.
Recently, due to economic hardship being experienced in the country and the world at large (largely due to drop in oil price which the country almost wholly depends on), I developed an interest in economics and business matters, and nowadays it doesn't take much to get info off the Internet. In my so doing, I realised that as a nation, we are an import based economy. The only thing we sell is crude oil, which right now sells for between 35-40 dollars/barrel. And forecasts have that prices will further plummet, with Iran preparing to flood the market with even more oil. As a matter of fact, oil price is not expected to make any significant upturn, until 2017, when it is forecasted that unconventional (shale) oil production by America will begin to drop.
Why am I saying these things? We see our industrious brothers from Aba, producing shoes and other items. Rather than commend them for a job well done, encourage the government to support and grow the industry, I see people saying stuff like "it's fake", "it's Aba made" etc, just because they are from a different geopolitical zone or a different tribe. What you lot fail to realise is that whether you're from the NE, NW, NC, SS, SE, SW, we are all enveloped in one entity called Nigeria. The economic implication of production, be it in Aba or Alaba or Abaji or Ajaokuta or Argungu, translates to us all. The other day I went out with a friend to a grocery store, he wanted buying a sachet of corn, to make pop corn. On looking at the pack and seeing that it was made in, and imported from Ghana, I almost broke down in tears. It has gotten so bad that we import CORN from Ghana. The same corn I had in my small garden as a kid in Yola! That shows how much of an import-based economy we are. Little wonder our Naira keeps losing value daily. We need to start encouraging local production, and stop with the unobjective criticism, due to ethnic, religious and regional prejudice.
There's also the issue of people having a habit of cursing Nigeria, to the point of calling it a zoo. I won't speak on the Biafra issue, because it is a very sensitive one, and I'm not well informed on that topic. But I will speak from a biblical point of view. First of all, I believe the Bible is God's word, and His word is always true, whether anybody likes it to be, or not. Jeremiah 29:7 says: Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper. ITimothy 2:1-2 says: I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone - for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peacefully and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. The point is this, don't curse where you live, rather, pray for it and bless it. Cursing Nigeria would be like living in a glass house and throwing stones. If Nigeria became a zoo, it's inhabitants would be treated like animals, so would their children.
The onus is on us to build the country and make it habitable for us and our unborn children. For us to do that, we'll need to change our sectional mentality. Remember, the ripple effect of what transpires in Maiduguri somehow affects you in Yenagoa. You may not see it, but it does.
