A’Ibom

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Obong Godswill Akpabio, has won this year’s award for best practices in education.
Organisers of the award, International Awards Committee of Exam Ethics International, said it was pleased to announce Akpabio as winner of 2009 Exam Ethics International Award for Best Practices in Education.
The Committee, in a statement said it sat at Hotel Wangara, Accra, Ghana on November 20 and considered 15 nominees from 11 countries and unanimously voted Akpabio as the best and most deserving.

It also said that the governor's achievements in education as researched and documented in a special edition of Excel Africa Magazine was most instructive and impressive.
It added: “Of critical importance to the Committee, however, is the seriousness and commitment with which the Governor has pursued the implementation of his free education policy.

In taking free education beyond political jingoism and making it really free, the Governor has demonstrated that it is possible for national and regional governments in Africa to domesticate United Nations and other Multilateral Conventions on provision of access to education to the millions of deprived children. Beyond the obvious social and economic benefits, it is a practical step towards combating child-trafficking child-labour and child-prostitution.
The award will be presented to Akpabio in a gala dinner reception to be organised in his honour this Friday at Alisa North Ridge Hotel, Accra, Ghana.

One of the sins is that his purchase of security helicopters were against the grain of due process and that the companies that handled the purchase is related to his brothers

Lagos Helicopter was purchased by Fashola's brothers. Hahahah! Lagos State= family affair. May we also know more about the Sunburn Yatch? The big breeze is blowing slowly.

How Fasola can derail his second term chance.
Written by Ajibola Oluti Sr
Tuesday, 22 September 2009 19:56

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To every Lagosian, Governor Fasola is the best that happened to Lagos since the creation of the state. One cannot deny the governor took some giant stride since he took over the running of the state. To begin to enumerate his achievement here is to repeat what others had written before which is not the purpose of this write-up.

No matter the achievement of an individual, the moment he began to see himself as the man who knows it all his free fall begins. Remember the Roman emperor who declared pompously “I am the state?”

The fall of Olabisi Akande in Osun state was not because of non performance but because only he knew what was good for the state. Against the advice of his advisers, he commenced a systematic reduction of the state workforce which was eating deep into the budget of the state in a purely civil service state. The cry against the move was monumental but because his move was in the best interest of the state, he ignored his people cry of anguish. When the political buccaneers came calling, the people just looked away.

Despite Fasola’s achievement in Lagos, two moves he made signify the beginning of his political downfall and scuttle his second term ambition. These are the Land Use Tax and the Consumption Tax. The land use tax replaces the tenement rate while the consumption tax is a duplication of the Federal Government VAT.

Against all advice like Akande, Fasola is going ahead in implementing those two unpopular decisions. The Land Use Tax will drive house rent to the roof in Lagos. Before the introduction of the unpopular land tax, I paid 1, 200 Naira as tenement rate to the local government for my two bedroom bungalow in Ikorodu. Now people tell me the least I can pay under the new tax regime is between 25 and 30,000.00 Naira. Where would a poor retiree like me get that kind of money? I receive only 11,000 Naira as my pension every month which is not even enough to feed my family. If I have tenants which I don’t, I would simply add this to their house rent. See what I mean.

The industrial people that are to pay the consumption tax says it amount to double taxation. If the governor succeeded in having his way, the added cost would just be passed on to us the consumer. Where then is the poverty alleviation the governor mouths every time? The man rather than alleviate the suffering of the Lagosians would be adding to it with this two unpopular taxes. If he man continue to implement this two taxes, I can guarantee him that no matter how well he beautifies Lagos landscape, when the buccaneers comes calling Lagosians will look the other way.

Whatever touch the life of individual personally is what matters when electoral decisions are to be taken by them and not what touches their lives collectively. Fasola should listen to what the good people of Lagos are saying, his consumption tax and his land use tax are two tax too many.

Let me school you a little bit,

The money for the helicopters came from the police trust fund. Fashola and the state has zero jurisdiction over the trust fund  because the money doesn't belong to the state. Fashola  didn't award the contract because he has no authority to do such, the trust fund's governing board did.

I'm not asking you to stop peddling your rumor and ignorance since it's gonna be like preventing you from doing what you do best, lmao

IG to commission Police patrol vans
Latest News Dec 3, 2009 By Anayo Okoli

Umuahia—The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Ogbonna Onovo, will soon commission 40 new patrol vehicles procured for the Abia Police Command by the state government.

Abia Police Commissioner, Mr. Jonathan Johnson, made the disclosure while taking delivery of brand new Hilux Patrol vans donated to the Command by the Chairman of Isial Ngwa South Local Government Area, Dr. Anthony Agbazuere.

A happy Jonathan noted that the gestures received from the government of the state and the support from Agbazuere would propel the command to do more in fighting crime.

“I will say that I am a very lucky man. I have seen love, I have seen commendations and I have seen encouragement since I came here. This is one thing that will normally propel us to do better,” Johnson said.

He called on other council chairmen in Abia to emulate Agbazuere, saying that if all the 17 council chairmen should provide vehicles to the police “it would go along way in providing equipment for the police to fight crime.”

Again, the money does not belong to the state government or the Nigerian police.

The money was voluntarily donated by Lagosians,

When asked if he was aware, as the chairman of the House Committee on Security, of the issue of the helicopters, he said, “I am not complaining. The Security Trust Fund is not a government institution; it is not an agency under the purview of the state government. It’s an agency initiated by the government and funded by outsiders. It’s not an agency of the government, so I cannot go there and ask them to open their book.”

Who got the contract to purchase the helis? Is it a coincidence that money that Fasola claims not to be in control of was used to purchase helicopters by his own very brothers? Only a Fasola boy boy will believe that.

Who got the contract to purchase the helis? That is the important issue here. Is it a coincidence that money that Fasola claims not to be in control of was used to purchase helicopters by his own very brothers? Only a Fasola boy boy will believe that. The Lagos house of assembly know better.

@blueteeth, leave the morons alone, they're posting pictures of slums that have been there since time immemorial, what about the revolutionising development he has brought many places in just 2 years. I haven't been to lag in years but i know how people have been commending the mass transit now available there- don't forget the population of lag.
I wouldn't be suprised if he introduces a subway system in the not too distant future, feats like that are becoming his signature. Mind you, just like any of us HE IS NOT A SAINT. cool

FASHOLA is the best.
you must all consider that Lagos internally generated revenue as at 1999 was just about N600m/month tinubu increased this to about N3.5b/month after blatant funds deprivation from the federal government. Now fashola has since increased this to N15b/month and still counting after a rigorous approach to up internally generated revenue in Lagos state. This stems out the fact that each government can be responsible for the success of its state. Its high time we thought of what each state can do with its own resources and stop the cap in hand pose to the federal government. No state government has an excuse, use what you have to get what you need and implement projects. some have land, some mineral resources, some population, some,

Fashola is a Good yard stick. HE IS THE BEST, NEED MORE OF HIM!!!!
