Dear poster,  I've gone through all you've been writing and responding to. Frankly speaking, life here in America isn't as hard as you're making it seem here on NL. I was doing quite well for myself before I left Nigeria, and ever since I've been here, it's nothing but better than what it was back in Nigeria. We all have our different stories, so don't come on here to corrupt or persuade people not to at least try to archive their dreams if it's something they've always wanted to do.

So my fellow Nigerians and dear great NairaLanders, there is nothing bad about America and unlike Nigeria that our leaders have made to seem like a failed state, America is the land that you can be whatever it is and do whatever it is you wanna do without the fear of no one, not even the cops unlike Nigeria.

I rep my motherland till the death of me, but America, God bless her!

I hail o!

and speaking of chicago. this is one of the worst places to live in america. during winter if you dont have your own parking and you parkon the streets, you are in trouble. snow will rise to the level of your cars windscreen and then freeze your car there. you will have to dig yourself out (try digging your way out of frozen ice that is the levelof your windshield ) this winter that passed a lot of people just abandoned their cars on the major highways (lake shore drive ) because the cars were frozen.

summer time nko ? the heat is hot enough to cook meat. in 1995, 750 people died from heatwave because of the summer heat. the humidity makes it worse. the air is heavy and nasty and hot. extremes of weather

taxes nko ? chicago has the highest taxes in america. mayor daley is a thief. they have always had the highest gas prices in the country

police harrasment nko ? make i no even start. chicago popos are the most  brutal and predatory cops in the whole of america. they have a reputation for scandals.

neighborhoods nko ? absolutely segregated. if you dont pay at least $900 a month for rent where you live, chances are that you will see lots of crazy people an dangerous people loitering around your neighborhood at night.

unemployment nko ? its in the double digits. no jobs

what has this all done to the city ? between 2009 and 2010, 1 million residents of chicago and greater chicago ran away from the city. they all moved to the south (ATL and TX mostly), some ran back to their different countrys because they thought if this is what america is, i dont want nopart of it. so chicagos population reduced drastically by a million people. now if you look around ? lots of empty boarded up houses. lots of unoccupied businesess,

The OP makes a lot of very valid points but many posters simply can not get beyond their materialistic and consumer orientated perspective on life to see the truth in his words.

I dont think the poster is comparing the US to Nigeria in terms of economic development - america is an industrialised nation which built its wealth on the enslavement of african people and the appropriation of land of other weaker peoples- its an empire  - that is enough for it to be a world leader, no if im not mistaken the op is referring to the adverse effect that life in america has on the average nigerian.

debt - i agree with the poster - debt has a terrible effect on the every day lifestyle of the average person in america, and unless you are a multi millionaire, have paid off your mortgage, are not shelling out huge tuition fees to pay for an education you cant escape it in america - debt is the reason you have to put up with doing a job you hate or working with people you despise - effectively you have to go out and work in order to get rid of it in order to prevent losing your home and your lifestyle - in other words you become a wage slave, this debt hangs over your head sometimes until after you die.

stress - for the average nigerian who wasnt brought up in the west life can be stressful because of how much harder you have to work in order to afford your standard of living - unlike nigeria when you can chill out with friends and family after a hard days work you may find yourself coming home to either an empty home with just the tv for company.  If you are lucky enough to have friends and family around you they may be too busy to visit because they too  are caught up in the treadmill lifestyle as well, a survey was carried out in the uk and it was discovered that blacks who live and work in the uk are more prone to suffer from depression and stress related illnesses than their counterparts who live much harder lives back home in nigeria!!!

professional devalue - unless you are a medical doctor, scientist, surgeon or trained in any other highly specialised field where there are a shortage of skilled personnel you will not be placed on the same level as american or uk trained professional and will be expected to start your training from scratch - which means going in to debt (see above) so i agree with this point as well.

prices - food prices are rising steadily all over the western world and are set to go through the roof the minuite the US dollar crashes and is no longer the world reserve currency, american economists are predicting that the dollar's value will drop so steeply that the end result will be hyperinflation  -so all this so called cheap food that many of you continue to crow about will become a thing of the past .

cultural diffusion - american culture which is based on empty consumerism, sex, pornography, promiscuity and general vacuousness is all consuming and all present - it contaminates and destroys every thing it touches but above all it does not tolerate difference - anything that departs from the above is ridiculed or and ignored, also america is a society built on legalised racial segregation  as a result america is divided along racial lines and people of african descent are relegated to a position of inferiority (although this is no longer practised openly) as a result of this a lot of nigerians born and raised in america will do everything possible to dissociate themselves from anything that reminds them of their culture - that is if they want to fit in with their fellow americans.
Therefore loss of language, sense of identity and culture is inevitable for most nigerians born and raised in america.

I don't know why some of you people that claim to live in the United States can even talk about suffering or slavery, 4 goodness sake the biggest injustice is living in your own country 9ja and watching the government hold the people ransom over and over again. As for me, I went through the loan system and I never went over, borrowing just 50k, for goodness sake why would you borrow 150k for loan, u be thief! Average tuition should be about 14k to 22k a year with the government providing free grants and other resources you should be able to cut it down to 7k to 14k a year, also get a part time job to cover other expenses, you have to live smart in America but unfortunately most Nigerians here love to live large, doing and buying things dem papa never buy b4, imagine someone also saying that you can't get rich in America, that's absolute nonsense, this country is filled with unlimited opportunities just because you are not smart enough to see them doesn't mean they don't exist, I'm a living witness to this.  Someone had the audacity to talk about American transportation,  he talks about taking the train and the bus system, my guy buy yourself a car and learn to drive. To my final amazement, a country that provides constant electricity, excellent security, tax returns, job assistance, tuition grants, health care benefits and so much more can never be worse than a country with no healthcare benefits, constant violation of human rights, poor living conditions, no disaster response and complete devaluation of human life. I remain confident that in America as long as you are hard working and cut your coats according to your size then you will definitely make it,

You guys must really think every Nigerian that lives abroad are hustlers!! Have you ever heard of a Nigerian as Expat in US, UK etc? Some of these Nigerians couldn't get any kind of job in Nigeria but they were lucky to leave Naija and in the western world today they are consultant, chartered engineers representing big companies all over the world.
My advice to you all is where ever you find yourself please try and make the best of it. I know taxi drivers in Naija that are graduates my brother is in that category and I know graduates in Nigeria that are jobless so , do your best and leave the rest. Sorry but this guy shouldbe called Odemchi as in Odechukwu Jonathan. I do not want to diss anyone becuase of their level of education but you must be either educated to a very low level or you are just plain dumb. All your examples are so meh!

1. Taking up credit is a personal choice. You do not have to make use of credit facilities but it may be necessary to do so to build your credit if you plan to buy a house in the future as you do not find overnight millioanires in america who can afford to buy a $500,000 house cash like you do in that mad country Nigeria where government officials use the peoples commowealth for themselves.

2. The 24 hour system is part of what makes the country and very few people work are compelled to do 12 hour shifts. even when you do a 12 hour shift, you ahve the appropriate number of days off. If you care to know my dads driver in Nigeria arrives at my house at 6Am in the morning and only leaves after droping my dad off at 10/11pm and he does this 6 days a week. sometimes he is asked to come on Sundays as well and there is no official overtime! how many ours is that. The same goes for the boys in my mums shop. 8am to 7pm Monday to Saturday for N12,000/ month.

3. Professional devalue my a$$. In the western world, experience counts. All your paper cerificates are worthless! What do you expect? To walk of the plane and into a $100,000/ year job? Wake up mofo! pay your dues.

4 Does any memebr of your family have N83,000,000 cash to pay for a house. Cut your coat. Tthere are house way cheaper than that. You can get $50,000 house in some run down parts of Atlanta if you can afford it. Please give me the contact details of the car seller in Nigeria where I can buy 2 brand new SUVs for N6.6million.

5. Screw native language. can Barack Obama speak Kenayan or whatever they speak over in kenya? Is he not the bloody president.

In summary, You are not a very bright spark!

Shame on you young man! You were really making valid points until you got to point number 5. Chinese, Indians, Koreans etc. that are in America are not loosing their languages and cultures, yet they speak the American accent better than an average Nigerian. Loosing your culture and language in other to get rich is actually not an option. You can get rich without loosing your identity. If you dont know how to balance that act, learn from the Hispanics, the Chinese, the Koreans etc.

bros where do you see the bad belle in my post ? who said all nigerians abroad are hustlers ?i live abroad and i am not a hustler. still dont negate the fact that the western world is a pressure cooker environment. not saying i am complaining. all am saying is that i can see the point of people who prefer to live in nigeria. see i am not one of these types who cant understand why anyone will pick nigeria over america. i have lived in both places and can honestly tell you that i had a better time in nigeria. so either way i aint knocking naija or america. but i wouldnt live in america again. the culture just does not fit in with my personality.

Sorry, a lot of your numbers are baseless, I am currently looking at homes in one of the nicer suburbs in Ohio and a brand new home, new build ranges from $130K-180K, And these homes typically have basements (non-existent in nigeria). Secondly, cars that are shipped to nigeria typically have a high mileage (above 90,000 miles), if you wanted to buy a car of the same mileage in the US, it would be ridiculously cheap. Cars in the US last much longer, so even if you spent 40K buying a "jeep" (which by the way jeep is a brand name of an SUV), but 40K in the US would buy a brand new rav4 with change, and on top of that, the car will last you 12 or more years. In nigeria, its not even worth buying a brand new car, because in 5 years you will need a new one.

I'm sorry, but as much as I love my country, there's still far too many things wrong with the country that still gives america the upper hand in this argument. I know way too many people who died of a common treatable diseases like diabetes in nigeria, but since the health system is in shambles their poor lives couldnt be saved. And with cancer rate on the rise in nigeria right now because of all the toxins citizens are exposed to, and a healthcare system that is still in shambles, I pick my choose and say America is better.

And please, nigerians work like dogs. At my company, I can work from home when i choose to, i work 8hr days 5 days a week. I start work at 8:00 am and live 10 miles away from my job. I leave home at 7:40 and I'm at my desk by 8:00am. I get a one hour lunch break at noon and then leave the office at 5:00 to get home by 5:30. None of that leaving egbeda or some remote place at 3am getting to the island at 8, and leaving the office at 8 to avoid traffic. And just working the simple 40 hour work weeks and the employees are complaining of needing more work life balance. I go on vacation whenver I want to, no questions asked. The only thing I have against the labor force in America is this - women get 6-8 weeks off work when they have a baby. To me thats BS. Granted you can take up to 3 months off for partial pay, and you can take another 3 months of unpaid for a total of 6 months, but this is nothing compared to our Canadian neighbors. Although, you have the option of quitting your job and finding another one when your baby gets older. But I wish they gave 6-12 months off in america.

I get startled when the power goes out, because its such a rarity. I've never turned on the tap without the expectation of running water. No one in my neighborhood has a single generator. I can call 911 in the event of anything, and they will respond within 10 minutes. 10 minutes. Can anyone in nigeria respond to anything within 10 minutes? Absolutely not. It will take 10 minutes for your 2002 Mercedes with 120000 miles to start.
And you can live in America debt free too. It is the ojukokoro that nigerians have in general that makes them take on excessive debt, so they can be flamboyant and "floss" and live large. If only you just cut your coat according to your size, you would be far better off, and your level of thinking will be by far elevated.

Even that last bit about culture which is probably your only valid point, i've seen people successfully give birth to and raise "Nigerian" children here in America. I've seen a ton of other west africans do it to. So if there is a problem, it is not a result of the american society, just that of the parents.

@buzugee

You talking true, this country is just full of so many troubles. Imagine, I have to pay close to $15 daily to work, and parking is no joke not if you wanna shell out $20 or more for parking and the traffic is jus another issue. As for the weather, did yall see the weather for this weekend? Sh/i/t, that sent me running out of the office @2:30pm yesterday. Anyway @ OP, Nigeria is a lot better only if you have money (average) doing ok because U.S. here is one problem or another, if it's not taxes, environment, or the law or one stupid thing or the other. Yeah U.S has opportunities but please that's more like slavery.

I kinda get ur drift, but think 4 a min, how many people will take culture or personality reasons over economic gain and basic comfort. I'm sure u know the kind of opportunities available in the U.S. 95% of Nigerians will not agree with ur grounds of comparison. Scenario 4 ur mind:What is the likelihood of success in naija without "man no man" connections and with little money esp as a new immigrant.

Again, what is the quality of life of the average American compared to the average Nigerian? Remember that America's problem right now is acute, but that of Nigeria is chronic. wages from a low paying job is greater if not equivalent to that earned in civil service in naija, without benefits. sad but true. All the selfish ones can go to America. They will live for 60 years in "comfort" and die in there 70sm or 80s and so what? I will stay in Nigeria and and try my best and die here. I will urge and advice  my children to do the same. In that way my own country will one day develop. I am not a quitter and not a coward. I will sacrifice my lifetime for Nigeria and not for America.

The experience of people in the US are different. It depends on how you get to the US, your right to work or not to work, and the type of job you are doing. So, you want to tell me that Seun is doing better than the database administrator of my school who got here just 5 years ago and making above $120K? he is not an American. he is a Nigerian, an Ibo boy. According to him, he saves almost 5K per month because he doesn't live a flamboyant life. The only problem this guy will have is the one he creates for himself, and not the one the US system creates for him. Also working for my school, I do not earn as much as my Ibo friend. But despite the restrictions placed on students employment, I am still earning more than many Phd Holders or even medical doctors in Nigeria. Meanwhile I am still a graduate student. So, you can imagine what will happen when I graduate and my school decides to retain me just as they did to my friend? I know you will say bills swallow up our money. Yes and No. It depends on what you earn and your lifestyle. After all the bills, I can still save above 500% of my monthly savings in Naija. So, what are you talking about?

America is full of opportunities. But the opportunity is not for everyone. It is for those who are equipped to tap into it. Once you develop yourself to the level the system wants, you can go as far as possible. And the story of Obama should tell you more,

Seun you are truly working hard. But don't get carried with what that guy has just said. Just keep doing your own work. If I want to be your friend, I will also say the same.

Try it and when they grow they will screw you up , joke grin but really Nigerian is the graveyard of talented children not all but 90%, the system is designed to ruin lives and not to improve it.

OP you muist be trully deluded
1 you said it is more expensive to leave in America than Nigeria
how much do you spend on gen and gas for your gen on a weekly basis?
hgow many of your inlaws or relations have been atacked by armed robbers
how many of your relatives have the soldiers slapped for just putting on a camo outfit
how many times have you had to fix your car cos of bad roads
how many times do you have to dodge refuse on the roads and cover your nose while driving by cos of refuse heap
in fact no need to go further
education
when 82% of nigerian grads either slept with lecturers, have god fathers in the school and got a superb cert for services rendered nd not education gained how do you expect anyone to respect Nigerian degrees, even Ghana no respect our degrees
what does that say about Nigeria if an african country that had refugees in Nigeria for yrs now turns around and tell us our education is not good ebuff
think things thru b4 u yan

I guess the poster is looking for words of encouragement and reasons not to feel too bad living in a Country with no Electricity, good roads, good hospital or school system, 164 naira to $1, high unemployment rate, 40s-50s life expectancy, etc. Well to cut long story short, enjoy naija while we tough it out here and just visit. I just don't get how people claim they love naija so much with all the hell they go through in that Country, what will they say if naija is close to any western world? and you turn around and cry that your government is doing nothing to better your life! why will they do anything with this kind of topic spreading on the www claiming you're happy and comparing death (naija) to sleep (America).

when you buy petrol for your gen is the money freely given to you?
when you pay for electricity that is never there was the money being paid by the govt
you complain of people paying for what they have, your car  and house, did you get them for free, did you not pay all in one swoop?for your info, car payments and mortgages is just you simply for those things which you have bought but will only pay back in installments/the govt is not asking you to pay for a house you do not own or a car you do not own.Naija is so stressless and all companies are running away
Nigeria is so loving to live in and still yet almost everything in our country is imported even down to tooth pick

@buzugee

Anyway @ OP, Nigeria is a lot better only if you have money (average) doing ok because U.S. here is one problem or another, if it's not taxes, environment, or the law or one silly thing or the other. Yeah U.S has opportunities but please that's more like slavery.

I know people in the same DC who DO NOT HAVE TO PAY  . . . . I know people who live in the same city who are OK with the weather!

a) If Parking is your problem, then move to SOMEWHERE-ELSE AMERICA so you do not have to Pay $15 daily

b) If Weather is your problem, then move to SOMEHWERE ELSE AMERICA where you can get the same sort of life, and job with way less of the weather issues . . .

To Everyone else , these are PERSONAL CHOICES made by these INDIVIDUALS that are complaining. People make choices daily to either COMPLICATE or DE-Stress their lives. Judging the whole country by that is morose.

This person CHOOSES everyday to pay $15 bucks for parking -- Chooses everyday to hate the weather in a CITY he CHOOSE to move to. You have to understand how hating one's PERSONALL CHOICE does not equate to a mark against a whole country.
