bashr8: this should answer your question to an extent

Female literacy is seen as the key to raising living standards for the next generation. For example, a newborn child is far likelier to survive if its mother is well-educated. In Nigeria we see a stark contrast between the mainly Muslim north and the Christian and animist south. In some northern states less than 5% of women can read and write, whereas in some Igbo areas more than 90% are literate.
pure lie...

Desola: Imo? Anambra? Are we talking education in spare part dealership or cocaine courier, here?

It is a pity how you do not know what is going on in Nigeria.

1. Imo and Anambra (and also Abia) has a lecturer in almost every faculty in all Nigerian higher schools>>>FIND OUT

2. Imo and Anambra has amongst the highest cut-off point in almost every exam written in Nigeria when it comes to using the quota system....Why this?!>>>FIND OUT

3. Onitsha, Orlu and Owerri is the origin of a good number of the most renowned and most respected professors in Africa>>>FIND OUT

4.Imo and Anambra are amongst the areas with the largest percentage of English speakers in Africa>>>FIND OUT

And lastly, Philip Emeagwali is the most respected (real) African computer scientist on earth>>>FIND OUT WHERE HE STARTED LIFE OR ORIGINATED FROM

Yaya Maigida,

I really don't see the need for name calling. We are just trying to have a civil converstaion. I could be wrong but just try to make your point.

That aside, I am impressed by your link which just goes to underline my point.

The link states 123,865 applications CAME FROM IMO STATE....what does that imply. Let's think...does that translate into indigene?

Statistically, most of the states ranked highest, rank in the second 1/3 of population figures except Oyo. Others ranked above them are mostly northern states where literacy is low. This could buttress your own point only that this would majorly b an assumption/educated guess.

As the data and information doesn't specifically say the 123k applicants are indegene of IMO, you cannot infer thus. You will not be able to quote this in an academic thesis.

AM JUST SAYING!

I dnt call names pls. If calling u a young man equates nsmes calling to u, then am truely sorry about it, cus i mean no harm.

As for d common sense, i mean, if its is by state of examination and not state of origin, lagos should come tops and maybe closely followed by kano state, cus u tend to have more exam centres in these states compared to imo or delta, thats s just a fraction of lagos population.

They dont need to spoonfeed us or spell out eveything b4 we can get them.

Hope u understand.

Oh, I see the confusion.

The stats show people who SAT the exam in IMO state not people of IMO state origin.

You can check the dailies again....kindly confirm!

JUST SAYING!

It seems young Nigerians lack brains, no wonder we are not developing. JAMB has always told us that the number of applicants who indicated IMO as state of origin has always been the highest. What more do you want to hear ?. If you feel it is the number who sat in IMO state, this means you are now saying that population in IMO is higher than Lagos, OYO, Kano etc.. this becomes a big question for Nigeria.
Please if we cannot believe BBC statistics on education, JAMB and WEAC records on education, then we cannot believe this world is real. perhaps we are in a dream world.
WHY do we allow sentiments to becloud reasoning even when we see facts starring us in the face. Face the fact, IMO is the most educated, forget the statistics of Ekiti/bear parlor talks. Give us empirical data about anything and we believe you. Poor brains in Nigeria

Apology accepted sir.

I just don't like us drawing conclusion from incomplete data. As much as we do not require spoon feeding, things aren't always as they seem even when in plain sight. There are and should be underlying explanations to data before conclusive inferences can be categorically stamped.

All that was based on my own personal observation. There is a high chance that its wrong!

Very well then, I would say the reason you see only females is because thats where your eyes are, not that I'm a saint though. You know, its obvious you love Igbo ladies and, perhaps, dont get along with their males which is the reason you only see Igbo females as educationally "hot" as opposed to our males. Well, to burst your bubble a bit, Igbo males have a slight edge over their females in litteracy rate, not that I'm happy about it but it is what it is. For example - try any stat that has student names in Nigeria and tell me what names are more prominet - Igbo males or females? that'll help you know whats going on. The truth is - "Igbo males only do trade" is another myth that most people are sucked into. Yes, we do trade but do you know what else we do? For instance, I had a side-Biz even as I was attending school in Nigeria and as soon as I was done with school I didnt have to put up with unemployment. I guess if you saw me in Aba or Alaba doing a hard bargain with you in Igbo, pidgin, or english (heavy accent) you would, by default, think I was Igbo "omata."

Anyway, I've said enough already. The point is - Nigerians, for the most part, are Knowledge seekers. Yorubas, Igbos, Hausas, Ijaws, etc we all seek knowledge using different routes. Some go straight from high school to unis, some spend one yr or two to help a brother in Biz before moving on, others combine Biz with education, and the rest pursue knowledge in islam, etc. I guess I would say that no one is out-educating anyone, we're, for the most part, on the same level.

Could everyone on Nairaland have a look this http://www.nigerianstat.gov.ng/ext/latest_release/ssd09.pdf
Save it on your PC and talk like at least half educated person. Just go to table TABLE 3.26b and case closed.
To help you find it easy when the document opens hold "Ctrl + F" keys, then type "TABLE 3.26b" in the box that appears on the pdf or browser, then hit enter and there you are. I believe this will close the whole argument about education in Nigeria. many more must be learned from the records.

sheyguy:
jamb's stat can only support arguments for education up till secondary sch. level.
If we are to use Tertiary institution as our benchmark, i will give it to osun state based on my experience during NYSC. I noticed that osun state indigenes had highest level of participation. Though states like edo, delta, ogun & oyo had high number of grads too, osun state surprisingly topped the list. If we were to move higher to PHD/Proffesor level then i will give it to ekiti/ondo/part of osun. Overall i give it to ekiti and ondo people because of their high percentage of highly educated people in their overall population.

Do you know that majority of Southerners are posted to the North and majority of Northerners are posted to the South? In my camp in Ogun State, there were more Northerners than people from any other Region. Does that make Northerners to be more educated than the South?
Re: Which State Is The Most Educated In Nigeria by Jamesqu(m): 2:01pm On Apr 30, 2012
Chuba1, thank you for this bit of delightful information.

Mr. chmod777, you will agree that chuba1's post sums up IMO's claim to be the best educated or getting education unlike the previous data that had been posted.

The beauty of the post is that, no words were required to decipher it. It justs "talks" itself.

Persistent questioning educates us all and nullifies the assumptions we hold into hard facts.

AM JUST SAYING.

PS: IT wont kill us to be polite in our discourse on NL, after all who's from where exactly?
Re: Which State Is The Most Educated In Nigeria by Chuba1: 2:02pm On Apr 30, 2012
Essentially, Imo is no 1 in absolute terms (i.e. sends more people to university than any other state in Nigeria), while Anambra is no 1 and Imo no 2 when you adjust for population (Imo State is more populous).

guy yu hit de nail for head. Imagine de list. Hw come i cant find rivers there. Imo, Delta n Anambra cannot be educationally inclined dan rivers. Pls go n do de proportion or ratio.

I'm sorry, that was sloppy of me. You are right, it is the other way round (Imo was larger before the creation of the new Eastern states but is not currently). The education data is clear then: IMO is the undisputed no 1.

Pls stop this beer palour talk, if you don't believe Jamb and Waec statistics, then you need to provide another reliable source to back up your claim.
Some people who think Igbos are only good in trading still find it difficult to accept today's reality that educationally Igbos lead while others follow, their misconcecptions have been shattered.

Now the argument has been settled:
Imo and Anambra lead in both application and admission.

South East leads per region on the above criteria which supports the fact that the SE is the most literate region in Nigeria

What is next?
Who graduates most?
Who advances further (MS, Ph.D) most?
Any data for these? Please do not argue if you have no data to support your point.

The data provided by Chuba1 indicates that there are a only few Lagosions (indigenes) around; despite having the highest population in Nigeria, it comes at the bottom when state of origin is considered. Every body don answer their papa names. shocked shocked shocked shocked

icon aus: People are still living in the past . Even before the civil war , igbos were the most educated and this was the fact . Then after the war igbos suffered a major set back both in trade and education. But currently igbo people are people to beat in terms of education and other human endeavours. People esp the sw are still thinking that the igbos are still lagging behind in education ; that was after the war . That igbos are good in trading does not mean they are behind in education; you guys got it wrong . Igbos are in every thing and that makes a society or region complete. i came from a family of 8 in Aambra and all of us are professionals. And besides , igbos have money therefore can afford to send their children to school and the best one for that matter.
