shymmex: This the topic Nigerians at home and in the diaspora should have a discourse about. Let's leave countries we have no stake in alone, and focus on our continent..

My hypothesis:

Till we rid Nigeria off retards - and uncle toms, we would continue to be the most disappointing country on this planet... Nigeria has so much potentials - but nothing to show for it... Most of our so-called 'educated' people are clowns with herd mentality who can't think critically... Nigerian educated class are also notorious of having low self-esteem.. cool

OP - name one, just one pure black country on this earth that is develop - the answer is none, then thy did you think naija should be different?

Good comments so far and thanks to you all. May I add that the foundation and success of any advanced country is Research and Development (R & D). South Africa pumps an unbelievably whooping amount of funds into R & D that would make Nigeria weep like a baby.

I was a researcher in South Africa for some time and I can tell you that SA is doing everything to leap into the future. There in SA, their Universities are researching almost at the same awareness level as most American and Europeans Universities. No wonder they rank among the top 500 universities in the world. As a researcher there, you have almost all the tools you need for your research. SA is a country doing all they can to rub shoulders with other World powers. Recently, I was at an IEEE conference where statistics of research output in 2010 for top African countries were listed as thus:

Egypt: 3004
South Africa: 1485
Tunisia: 766
Sudan: 40
Nigeria: 32

When I saw this statistics, I was ashamed and filled with rage. As far as I'm concerned, Nigeria is a dead-end in Africa. I can boldly say that Nigeria is walking-dead, Big-for-nothing entity for now. Any country that fails to drive R & D is a dead country that can never grow. I hope our greedy leaders get to see the damage they are wrecking on the country. Lest I forget, the city of Johannesburg in SA consumes over 2500 MW of electricity alone. This is more half of the output of Nigeria (at 4000 MW) alone. Nigeria should wake up and smell the coffee, we are at least 20 yrs behind SA.

SA is more advanced than Nigeria for many simple factor 1.) less ethnic group, half of those ethnic groups are related to each other way or another. 2.) whites developed the land for them. 3.)less corruption than Nigeria. 4.) they allowed ethnic groups whom wanted out, to leave and not force them to stay. 5.) less bad publicity therefore more tourism. 6.) less population 7.) the government actually invest on it's citizen. Despite being lord over by the Europeans longer than Nigerians, SA are not obsessed with oyinbo and would rather choose someone from their community rather than a random white person to do a work for them. 8.) They actually create relationship with other African nation therefore a trust between the nations thus more investment from those nation.

The problem with Nigeria are Nigerians themselves, simple...

A country with utterly corrupt leaders, and docile followers - who only care about what they eat today, and not the future = Nigeria, the greatest disappointment to humanity.

Its something i cant necessarily put my finger on, i won't say its because of the whites or because Nigeria had a long session of bad governance and might still have an element of that in its system (every Country does) but i will probably dwell on a few insightful replies i have seen here concerning how SA's government was managed and treated like something that would be owned by the colonies, while Nigeria's was treated like something that was for rent and eventually was taken back. Nevertheless, i feel both Countries are striving for a change in the depiction of Africa as a whole.By checking on Forbes to have a look at the very accomplished entrepreneurs in the African continent, you would notice exactly what I am saying. The list is dominated by South Africans, Nigerians and a few Egyptians thereabout but mostly the two a-fore mentioned Nations and although a Nigerian tops the list, it doesn't really matter because all work together directly or indirectly in changing the label established on the Continent. http://www.therichest.org/nation/richest-people-in-africa/

Bitter truth. My MSc dissertation involved obtaining some data's from a similar federal agency both in Nigeria and Ghana. Ghana developed their agency framework of operation from ours and are already miles ahead of us. The problem with Nigeria is corruption and lack of R & D. We are stagnant. Continuous Improvement does not exist in Nigeria.

If black South Africans were lazy barely anything would have happened since 1994....now how much have we achieved since then? Obviously way more than the rest of Africa, and even some of Europe, while a black govt is in charge. We might not be perfect, and with a lot of unresolved issues but we're focused on not just building South Africa but also developing the continent, even if it means dragging it, kicking and screaming into the 21st Century.

According to most of you, the white skin is the magic wand? So why is Albania and most of eastern europe sorry sights? They are not white enough? Is China white? Japan? South Africa has enjoyed massive western investments since the aparthied years because just like the isrealis or Japanese, they totally subsumed themselves to the core tenets of western civilization. Period! If you want to know what happend in South Africa, look at what didnt happen in Zimbabwe after western bank loans dried up following Mugabes land seizures.

In the 70s, Zim was under a white rulership that protected massive western/colonial investments in the country. Mugabe took over and even killed to protect these investments and he was knighted by the queen! Then he had an epiphany and went for their farms and dear Zim was torn to pieces. Dubai and co ar biulding up their cities today wth a mixture of bank loans and their oil cash. Note how they follow NATO all over the place even in the Arab world. It is just like a gang of thieves who share their spoils after every expedition. Even Apartheid South Africa was proped up by the west because while the white minority government terrorized the black population, the same government kowtowed to western dictates no matter who was in charge. In essence, Botha would have bowed to Obama as the leader of the "free world" if Obama was in charge then and Obama would have protected that government irrespective of his black lineage!

Most African countries are not that imperialistic. Although there is this belief in western circles that African nationalistic struggles share similar ideals with socialism, it is obvious that racism also encourages certain western political and economic policies in Africa. So what happened in South Africa is just a question of the super rich helping to develope the small guys who abide by his rules by playing their roles to entrench his dominating ideas. Dont be surprised if Dubai and co get favourable loan deals from the world bank and co to foot the construction boom in their countries deu to their roles in Libya- a fellow Arab country. Color has a role in this but the answer is not as simple as black and white.

Also because they have cowardly unmotivated citizens who would rather live under opression and penury than carry out a revolution.

How can you call south African citizens coward?they are the most motivated
and social-political conscious group in Africa.

It is true that the whites laid the foundation but the blacks are doing well
by following the path of inclusive participation by giving its entire citizenry
access to institutions that enhance human opportunities.People are supported
to be the best they can be.

The difference with Nigeria is that they combine good education with good conscience
which is opposite in Nigeria and equally they love justice which is vital for
sustainable development. The black government is improving seriously from where the
whites stopped and you don't see them making noise to commission completed projects.

Brilliant analysis. It is unfortunate that most people on this forum don't understand the rules of politics and power. They seem to relate everything with skin color. I always encourage my friends and even enemies to engage themselves with books and documentary rather than fictional movies.

Many years ago, most Chinese are complaining what Nigerians are complaining today.Even most of their citizens don't believe that their country will ever become better. Most people look than upon them as stupid and senseless people but now the game has changed.

Another great issue that is drawing Nigeria back is ethnicity and religion. Like someone said earlier, it is hard to see a country that is diverse as Nigeria without issues.

So to start with, it is better to break that country into segments or come up with a rule that suits everyone

And for those that care, I would also recommend reading books like "The Economic Hitman".

Very apt.
This chap has said most of the things I didn't want to say. It's not about the color, it's about the power bloc. Just like in our own society, where the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer, the world works along similar lines.

South Africa in its current state is as a result of the Boers and their alliances. During the apartheid years, the white regime got a lot of aid, financial and technical, from Israel, who has always enjoyed aid from the United States. That in an era of sanctions.
