This story is more about that supposed Chinese led industrial zone

Wow, This is the best thing that can happen in Enugu at the moment, I pray this administration succeed

breaking ceremony of the Enugu Free Trade Zone, ENPOWER FTZ, last week, were impressed with the turnout of dignitaries and the motivation of the citizenry towards actualizing an economic hub in South east Nigeria even as the state government is also planning another industrial park in Enugu which will be the biggest foreign investment south of the Sahara, propelled by a Chinese private investment.

Saturday Vanguard gathered that after a careful survey of economic activities in Africa, a Chinese group known as GoalMark group, traced most of the Sino-Nigerian trading activities to the people of South East, Nigeria and decided to set up an industrial park in Enugu state. The public-private sector imitative is a project between the state government and the prospective investor – Goalmark group of Beijing- China through the coordination of a Nigerian company- Superjet Industrial Company Limited based in Enugu.

Gains of investment

During the signing ceremony of the MoU, GoldMark group’s delegation from China led by one Mr.Lin Feng said “the company decided to go ahead with the project after a careful study from which we confirmed Enugu as a suitable place for it. The project which will cost billions of dollars to complete will bring massive investments to Enugu from all over the world and ensure the tremendous improvement of the economy of the state and environs.

Most Chinese companies shipping goods to Africa will move down to Enugu and set up base within the industrial park from where they will distribute or export to other African countries.” Going by the proposed investment, the Industrial park is to comprise investments in such major areas as coal mining, power generation from coal and water treatment plants as well as cassava and rice processing concerns.

The Industrial park is made up of various zones such as a Residential zone that would warehouse a well serviced residential estates with over 20,000 housing units comprising of flats in high rise apartments of 35 floors each and duplexes; a Free Trade Zone; a Commercial Zone covering a modern 500 shops wholesale, warehouses, shopping complex, malls, bus terminals, sports recreational facilities, office spaces on several high rise buildings, hotels and more; an Industrial zone designed to accommodate light, medium and heavy industrial complexes with a capacity to host over 250 industries and the industries will be provided with state of the art environment for indigenous and foreign industrialists.

It will also accommodate an Agricultural zone, a large area covering over 700 hectares of land for modern and high yield crop and live stock production complete with modern abattoirs and produce market that will also serve as a training environment for local farmers; There will also be power infrastructures providing 24 hours power for both the residents and industries from a 300 mw thermal power plant powered by coal. Also included in the plan is for an establishment of a specialized school for training of manpower to handle the various investments that the park will be attracting.

Ugwuanyi’s foresight

Governor Ugwuanyi had since May this year developed road to the site through Nchatach-Nike including other communities of Oruku, Akpuoga-Nike, Owo and Amechi-Idodo. The Governor severally went to the host communities to resolve the issue of the 2, 632 hectares land acquisition for the project. The President General of Nchatacha community, Chief Fredrick Edeh, confirmed to Vanguard on Ugwuanyi’s effort at reaching amicable resolution with the host communities which brought about an access road developed to the site of the project.

The General Manager of the facilitating private investor company, Superjet, Mr. Emeka Ugwu, who was at the ground-breaking ceremony of the Enugu Free Trade Zone, said that the ENPOWER FTZ would not affect the proposed Enugu Industrial park but would rather complement each other. He stated that the Chinese decided to set up the industrial park because of the interest of the people of the south east in industrialization. “It is a real estate development designed to gather critical infrastructure in one locality so that the aggregated infrastructure becomes cheaper.

The choice of Enugu

“It’s like a new city to contain 250 factories and will also house residential estates. The choice of Enugu for the location is because the state is strategically located for access by 26 out of 36 states within 24 hours and the state hosts an international airport. We have acquired the mining lease for coal which will be used to fire the power for the industrial park.

Our social responsibility includes scholarships, employment, trainings and will take care of host communities and government will take care of revenue generation through personal income tax. In the next 6 to 8 years everything will take shape,” disclosed Ugwu. It was based on the unprecedented industrial revolution and economic activities coming in the state that Governor Ugwuanyi requested from the Federal government to commence construction of a second runway at the Akanu Ibiam International airport.

He stated that the establishment of the Free Trade Zone has created an urgent need for the construction of a second runway at the airport in order to accommodate the expected increase in air traffic. “We therefore invite the Federal Aviation Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, to present to us, a plan for this project and we affirm the availability of land required for its actualization.

We further appeal to the Federal Government to ensure that the Airport meets with all internationally accepted standards especially by extending and resurfacing the existing runway and installing or building facilities that would improve night operations and accommodate heavier aircrafts that are normally used for international and intercontinental travels.

Offers galore

The Deputy Head of Mission at the Czech Republic Embassy in Nigeria, Mrs. Hana Klucarova, who was at the function said that her country would partner and work with the Enugu State government in order to make the free trade zone a success. Also speaking, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the ENPOWER FTZ, Engr. Emeka Eneh, said the project would stimulate trade and investment beyond oil when operational as well as provide massive opportunities for employment.

He explained that of the 35 operational free trade zones in the country, Enpower Enugu Free Trade Zone located near the Akanu Ibiam International Airport Enugu and its 9th Mile Corner annex is the first free trade zone to be established in the South East zone.

Visionary leadership

The state commissioner for commerce and Industries, Mr. Sam Ogbu-Nwobodo said “The state government is enhancing the Private public initiative designed to mop up most of the unemployed youths in the state. It’s a great industrial hub that will create 30,000 jobs and will help in diversifying the economy. It’s a unique partnership that allows you process export commodities and has N240b expected direct foreign investment. About 5000 companies will operate the ENPOWER; it is the same manner that China and Dubai were created on free trade zones.

“The specialized industrial clusters to be developed within the free zone areas include the manufacturing centre and whole sale market; the Aviation and Aerospace cluster; the power, utilities and light manufacturing cluster; the Health care park, the Business and Hospital park; Technology and Digital Media Park; and the Chemicals and Agribusiness cluster.”

Nobody is saying the Governor isn't doing any thing at all. It will be silly to do so. We're only comparing him to his immediate predecessor and we have to say it the way it is. We have gone so far in Enugu not to maintain a certain level of developmental strides. Currently, Ugwuanyi is living up to the expectations a lot of people had for him. We're hoping he is still strategizing and will do better subsequently.

within his short period of time in office, ugwuanyi has done a lot of road projects. Nsukka has been neglected for ages by previous administrations and that is what ugwuanyi wants to correct. I don't think any governor in this current regime has built a road with the kind of sophisticated drainage ugwuanyi built in Nsukka. The length and the depth is just something else. I don't think Sullivan was able to build the number of road project ugwuanyi has built within such a short period of time. roads ugwuanyi is constructing are littered everywhere in Nsukka. Also remember that there were a lot of money coming in under chime. According to people in the know, Sullivan embezzled hundreds of million while leaving office leaving almost an empty treasury for ugwuanyi. I know that ugwuanyi has been using vehicles left by chime as his official vehicle although I don't know whether he has bought a new one now.

Seems like the administration of Ugwuanyi is turning some folks in this thread into unabashed, unbendable haters. I call them haters because I know most of them are witnesses to the massive road project by the same administration in Nsukka which only one or two state governors in Nigeria can boast of presently. Well, I give no hoot about anyone hating on the governor for some political reasons, whether risible or reasonable but a further attempt by this group to hurl unwholesome slurs towards my people -- yea, the people of the governor's zone, will undoubtedly get a desired response.

Despite the back-to-back good news coming from the administration into this thread, haters keep raising their voices in protest. They shamelessly claim to be protecting the interests of their villages but still find a fault with the governor protecting the interests of another person's village.
If for anything, I like how they are already summing up some insignificant clans that will stop the governor's ambition, because it will expose them for the losers they are when they are eventually unable to accomplish that.
For the records, I'm from Enugwu Ezike and the governor has done nada down here. I don't like Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and probably never would have if I hadn't come in contact with folks who are fighting tooth and nail to present him as an all-round failure when he is obviously doing a lot in the town of Nsukka for example which is not even in his local government talk more of being his town talk more of being his village.

It is indeed regrettable that some people's judgments are clouded. Our governor for me is only second to Obiano in terms of development in the east. I don't live in Enugu but my visit last week made me to rethink the authenticity of some posts here.
I do not know Enugu well but I could not believe Abapka when I got there. Also was 9tmile junction. Opi to Nsukka dual lain is almost completed.
These are just few to mention and talk less of other bilateral agreements with different firms to boaster the d economy of the state. Also one should not forget that the civle servants are also enjoying d administration with a proposed housing for them.
I am not against anybody airing his or her view but let be factual. Indeed he might not have done the best but he is trying harder than most governors in Nigeria. Also this is just his second year in office

Point of correction Oga. Obiano hasn't done anything and if you think otherwise kindly list the roads, schools and hospitals he has done since coming to power. Please don't mention the flyovers in awka. Tanx

But their road dividers for dual carriage roads are always wack.

Ifeanyi, shut up your dirty mouth, Obiano has done more roads, schools, hospitals etc, and presently he is the best in the east. I think you are rather stupid and silly at the same time, so why should we not mention the flyovers or are they not achievements too? Focus on this thread if you don't have anything in your head to say. Maybe you should start listing what your useless Imo state gov has done with all the loans he has wasted!

Point of correction Oga. Obiano hasn't done anything and if you think otherwise kindly list the roads, schools and hospitals he has done since coming to power. Please don't mention the flyovers in awka. Tanx

I think everyone has every right to criticise the government of the day, and even past governments. It is democratic to do so. It also makes for good government because the leaders themselves might be listening, and can correct the wrong impressions made.

I also don't see any wrong with anyone complaining about a wrong treatment meted out to either him or his people. Such complaints are democratic too, and are the only way for constituents to point out where the government are not doing well. Nobody should stop a section of the populace from complaining.

But the problem comes when others think the criticism ain't right, or is a slight on the rulers, or a section of the populace. Of course, opinions must differ from person to person, that's why we bear different names and have different faces. Such opinions are also right, and even democratic.

A lot of people right here felt bad about Chimaroke Nnamani government tactics, and they were not vilified, many people also criticised Sullivan Chime here on this thread, but nobody used foul language on them, even Jim Nwobodo and Onoh are being criticised. No biggie. Why are we getting carried away about Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi criticism? It is very democratic.

But what is undemocratic is the use of foul language to express our discontent. Some people just invade the thread to do nothing but use languages which can cause discord. Words like "hater" or "shameless" does not belong in this thread. We should desist from those foul language no matter the temptation to use them.

Let the contribution continue in peace.

Thank you all.

Oga sir. I get ur point and that's uncivilized. However, d criticism of any of them should be constructive. Why most of us are not happy with the criticism of Ugwuanyi is that most of them are unfounded. In fact from their analysis one who never been to Enugu lately will definitely believe that the governor is doing nothing. But that is a blatant liar. Just imagine someone using d quality of R.C.C. work to criticize him and even the one who feels that his village is neglected fails to mention multi-million bridge under construction in his local gvt by the same governor.
One will needs to be in Enugu to see for him/herself what the governor is doing.

My submission therefore is that while criticism is a great tool in a democratic governance, such should be constructive and factual devoid of unguarded misconceptions.
