Food / Black Friday Food Deals For The Entire Month. Who Wants? by adjain(m): 10:48am On Nov 17, 2016

Let's take a break from recession to talk about food.

As you know, Jumia is going to be dropping prices on Friday, November 25, 2016, after its regular fashion of 'Black Friday.' Konga will be running its 'Fall Yakata' deals then as well - ensuring that your favorite electronics can be bought at great prices if you time it right.

But there's more:

Jumia Food is running a daily Black Friday Flash Sale daily until the 28th of this month. The way it works is this: there is a calendar of food deals, lunch and dinner, that you can participate in. It is often rushed and lasts two hours (12-2pm and 6-8pm daily) but the deals are often worth it.

Here's the link to the daily deals: http:///NairalandBlackFriday

It first started as an Independence Day giveaway (on October 1st) and now Jumia Food is extending the offer past its regular customers.

If you live (or work) in Lagos or Abuja, you can use this opportunity to sample the Jumia Food delivery service (which is the largest and the best online food delivery platform in the country).

There are different kinds of foods you can select from on Jumia Food - if you like Nigerian or European dishes, pizzas or burgers (or salads) you can make an order from a list of hundreds of your favorite restaurants.

Your food will be delivered in minutes (if the food does not get to you when Jumia Food promises that it will, Jumia Food will give you a voucher for a free meal.)

New customers get 30% off on a selected range of JumiaFood restaurants when they use the discount code: "NAIJAFOOD" on checkout.

Travel / What Is 404 And Why In God's Name Do People Eat It? by adjain(m): 1:51pm On Mar 22, 2016
Quiz question:** What is the similarity between a Calabar restaurant and a South Korean one?
Answer: Your food barks when it is not properly cooked.

Okay, jokes aside: say you have touched down for the Calabar Carnival and are looking to try some of the native delicacy, might I interest you in a steaming dish of 404? It is no myth - although it might be surprising for a befuddled, horrified and totally scandalized first-time visitor - that the Calabar people love their dogs, and they love them well.

Let us take a break to admire this cute puppy:

Why would anyone ever eat a dog? OMG!
Why would anyone ever eat chicken? Or fish? Or, for that matter, edible worms...?

I don't know, man. Humans are so weird. If it is there, there will be somebody to eat it.

Someone I know recently asked: I'm looking to start a fulfilling dog-eating career. How do I begin?
Before you begin, take a look at this guy:

And this other fella:

Do you still want to eat dog meat? Yes?

Oh.
Wow. Okay.

Word on the street is that you can woo a woman with dog meat (the actual mechanics is what I am unsure of. It might be acceptable practice to wave a violently struggling, whining dog, in the face of your lover while promising her some lovely canine stew in return for her ring finger.)

There is an interesting story http://hotels.ng/travel/naijasinglegirl-confessions-of-a-serial-dogmeat-eater/here about a first-timer's adventures into dog-meat consumption. Read and be on your way.

Or read the full guide to eating dog meat here: http://hotels.ng/travel/best-404-joints-in-calabar/

Travel / Apart From A Bed, What Other Services Are You Entitled To When You Book A Hotel? by adjain(m): 12:00am On Dec 21, 2015
There are services a hotel room is required to give to you which you might be oblivious to. This post answers the question "what are the services rendered by hotels?"

The typical Nigerian hotel user might be a bit flummoxed as to the services offered by hotels. Apart from providing you a room, there are a number of things you should expect as standard when booking a hotel room.

Basic Necessities Provided by Hotel Rooms
The following are some of the basic services given by hotel staff:

Hotel Security: It is the duty and responsibility of a hotel business to give maximum security to its guests.
Electricity: This varies, admittedly, but hotels are required to provide electricity to your hotel room for specified duration of time. Usually you are furnished with a brochure that lets you know the times of the day to expect uninterrupted power in your hotel room no matter the PHCN situation.

Classier hotels will provide you 24-hour power.

Clean sheets: This one explains itself: your bedroom must have clean sheets which should be changed accordingly for the duration you will be using the room.

Prophylactics: I am not sure how much of a tradition this is, but hotel rooms have been known to have condoms on hand for guests who request. Some might keep a roll of these close to your nightstand. Some hotels, however, might consider that their guests might be offended by the sight of condoms so they only proffer those when asked directly.

Value-Added Services Provided By Hotel Rooms

The hallmark of a good hotel are some of the exclusive services it provides which earn it a higher status. Some of those include:
* Breakfast in bed
* Gymnasium
* WiFi
* A bar
* Swimming pools
* Sports arenas
* Cable television
* Room service

Travel / My Greatest Travel Fears And How I Solved Them by adjain(m): 6:50pm On Oct 14, 2015

Due to the nature of my job, I tend to have to travel a lot, which is quite unfortunate. I am 6'2 and I hate cramped space. Apart from being slightly claustrophobic, sitting for a long time in a confined space will inevitably stop the blood flow to my legs and give me pins and needles.

Anyway. I am always afraid of being robbed - especially on that Benin/Ore road at night. See, I am also terrified of my vehicle breaking down unexpectedly and making me susceptible to highway dangers and missing my appointment.

The list goes on, guys!

So recently I have started writing a list of my travel fears and how I solved them and I would be glad if you can suggest tips you have used for your own travel fears.

1. Blood flow stops to my legs after a while on the bus: I have learned to ONLY sit in front on buses. This means that I usually have to arrive at the park very early so that if I can't make the front seat on the first bus, I take the next one - without fear of running late.

2. Fear of being stranded on the road: Before travelling, I load my phone lines (I have three phones) with recharge cards so that I increase my chances of having internet connectivity no matter where I am in the country. I have sometimes visited Hotels.ng and booked an emergency room while on a journey. Sometimes, however, where even data connection cannot be found, I just call their customer care agent on 0814 880 8800 and each time I receive great services. Nowadays I feel happier travelling with the knowledge that I can just book a room with them no matter where I am and they'll guide me to the nearest place to sleep.

3. Fear of robbers: I admit, I haven't figured this one out completely (help, anyone?) but I have the emergency numbers of the police stations along my route. I was robbed once but couldn't call the numbers in time (although I also suspect that even if I had called, they wouldn't have gotten to me on time.)

Do you have any tips to share,Nairalanders? Please share.

Hehe. I understand that Dulaman. Some of the people who have had to send data to me in the past have complained about the exact thing. My advice is usually to do as best as you can, but to politely acquiesce if the owner of the property doesn't want their establishment photographed. However, for the most part, you will have no problems.

I hope this answers your question.

But you know is not every shop or location the owner will allow you to snap. What if they think you are planing to Robb them or set them up

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Job For People With Phone Cameras And Internet Connectivity by adjain(m): 5:11pm On Oct 11, 2015
It isn't feasible to pay per spot, but rather for the entire information you will be collecting and the cost (to you) of acquiring all that information. Singular information is useless to me, so I will not be paying 'per spot', but for the entire information.

ennydollar15:
how much will u pay per spot?
Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Job For People With Phone Cameras And Internet Connectivity by adjain(m): 5:09pm On Oct 11, 2015
That's not a very nice thing to say. Have I duped you before? I understand that this is a forum, but coming here to randomly post like I have proven to be a fraud is defamation of my character.

Anyway, in the same vein, I could pay before the data is sent and never get the data requested. It's a two-way street. I can also similarly get defrauded. This is why I am paying everyone for the first set of data they send me, so they know I am legit. After that we can then work out a payment timetable as it's a bit stressful having to pay everyday through the week (also the inter-bank transfer cost can come up to a neat sum if I have to pay too often.)

Martins301:
Do this job at your own risk. If the op agrees to pay before sending the data, fine. If he agrees to physically inspect the data on YOUR device then pay before u send it to him, fine. If he demands that u send him the data b4 he pays u, JUST RUN FOR YOUR LIFE unless u have time and money to waste.

True. This is why I'm not asking you to cover Owerri, but your specific location in Owerri.
abdulrazat:
Okay then. How do we start? A town like owerri will need almost 10 people to cover it.
Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Job For People With Phone Cameras And Internet Connectivity by adjain(m): 10:22am On Oct 11, 2015
Well, you'll receive payment for all the spots you have covered. If you ever travel or find yourself in a new area, you can send me a new list and I'll check if I already have someone covering that area. If not, well, then you can cover it for me cheesy
Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Job For People With Phone Cameras And Internet Connectivity by adjain(m): 10:12am On Oct 11, 2015
Hello 1miccza;

Typically three-five photos per location, from good angles, is enough. But I am amenable to working with the data collector's discretion. I am quite flexible.
Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Job For People With Phone Cameras And Internet Connectivity by adjain(m): 10:00am On Oct 11, 2015
Hello Abdulrazat, I mentioned that I would pay every two weeks or (if you finish before 2 weeks) when you are done with the data. It's a recurrent task and it would take anybody more than two weeks to do this, from previous experience with other data researchers.
Jobs/Vacancies / Job For People With Phone Cameras And Internet Connectivity by adjain(m): 9:23am On Oct 11, 2015
Hello everyone!

It's me again. I am currently looking for people who are highly mobile and can take photos with their phones and describe locations. I am currently building a travel website and need a list of interesting places around Nigeria.

For example, I need a list of best places to club, hangout, buy food, change money, etc in your location.

Here's what you need to do, quite simply:

1. Send me a list of the most interesting spots in your location - and mention your location, too (eg night clubs, bars, restaurants, shopping malls, parks, cinemas, supermarkets, national monuments, historical landmarks, markets, etc in Ondo state) The bigger your list, the more I will pay for you covering all the items in the list. When sending your list, think widely and have a mental screen for what is interesting.

An example of interesting spots include, for example, White house restaurant in Yaba Lagos, national theatre, Ozone cinemas, Surulere mall, etc. Get the idea?

2. When I review the list, you'll go out and start taking photos and writing short descriptions about the location (e.g, after taking photos of a club, you can write a 200-word description about it saying 'This is the Mercedes Club. The people who come here are usually employees of Mercedes in Owerri. Every Friday, they throw a parade that is filled with fanfare..." etc)

3. As soon as you send me your list in (1) above, we'll fix a price value for the list and I'll pay you when you have sent me all the data in that list.

Send me an email here: feelirabs@gmail.com.

Payment is every two weeks OR as soon as you finish with your list.

This is an ongoing job. Tell anyone you know might be interested about this.

Regards

Events / This Saturday: Hotels.ng Organizes Hackathon (all Coders/developers Invited) by adjain(m): 9:36am On Jul 29, 2015
Hotels.ng will be holding a machine learning hackathon on Saturday, 1st of August to develop an algorithm that will efficiently predict which users are most likely to cancel a hotel booking.

In a press release by Hotels.ng the reason for the hackathon was explained as:

The idea behind the hackathon is simple: all hotel booking websites around the world have incidents of cancelled hotel bookings. Some users are more likely to cancel their bookings than others, depending on several factors/conditions. For example, a person who books and pays is less likely to cancel his booking compared to someone who intends to pay on arrival. A person who books 5 different hotels in different states on the same day is likely to cancel at least 4 of those reservations. Or maybe not – because he’s probably booking for other people.
The participants of the hackathon will be given a dataset of 5,000 pieces of dummy data against which a machine learning algorithm will be coded based on past patterns of users making hotels reservations. The end-goal would be to create an algorithm that would predict booking cancellations.

At the end of the hackathon, each algorithm will be run against the entire Hotels.ng dataset from past behaviors of users to see whose algorithm was the best predictor of booking cancellations.

Everyone is invited to the hackathon, but only software programmers will be allowed to participate due to the complexity of the task. Solo developers and/or teammates are invited to participate as well.

The hackathon will take place at the Hotels.ng office located at No. 3 Birrel Avenue, Sabo, Yaba (right beside the Chief Magistrate Court). It starts at 9a.m, and will probably end shortly after lunch hour.

The winner gets a prize, obviously. Interested participants can register here eventbrite.com/e/the-hotelsng-machine-learning-hackathon-tickets-17933483532

Travel / Nairalanders In Nasarawa, Ondo And Abuja: I Need Your Help! by adjain(m): 10:49am On Jun 15, 2015
Hi guys,

I would be the happiest person on earth if you can help me with this!

I am currently writing a project about all the states in Nigeria, including a list of all the places of interest in those areas. I want to start with Nasarawa, Ondo and Abuja states.

I need people who can tell me some of the top places (churches, hang out spots, businesses, markets, popular bus stops, streets, etc) in these states.

If you are willing to help me, I can call you and we can talk on the phone.

Thank you in advance!
Business / Re: My Startup Hotels.ng Just Raised $1.2m. Ask Me Anything by adjain(m): 5:56pm On May 27, 2015
I am always pleased to read heart-warming victory tales from legitimate Nigerian business owners - especially internet business owners, so CONGRATULATIONS MARK! I am proud of you.

I have been following the progress of Hotels.ng on and off for the last year, and I daresay you are an encouragement to a young businessman.

I have a very generic question: if you had no software developing knowledge but identified the potential for Hotels.ng when you did, how would your lack of knowledge of 'coding' have affected you?

Please be as clear as possible with your explanation - it is of especial value to me.

Thanks!

Whew! FINALLLLLLLYYYYY.

Thanks for organizing this, White Mosquito. This is the most fun I've had on nairaland in a long while.

Thanks to the judges. Your lack of bias is a glorious thing to behold. Your knowledge of the nuances of writing and the understanding of behind-the-scenes plot crafting was just simply...exemplary.

The comments you gave, Caracta, and White Mosquito on my piece is all the prize I need. And (PS) it really isn't a true story LOL. I have simply been spending too much time - I guess - wondering what happens if a mentally-challenged person comes to his senses, and this was the product of it.

I am also glad for the third place consideration. I am thrilled.
