I have no right to question any so called "Man or Woman of GOD" (does that mean the rest of us are not God's childeren by the way ?)

However I expect any would expect any so called "Man or Woman of GOD" to ask ask themselves these question, Am I or the congregation spending this money judiciously ?, is it good value for money and most importantly What Would Jesus do if he were in my shoes ?.

In a nation where poverty, joblessness and disease is rife, wisdom to use the resources at our disposal to better the quality of life the people around us should be paramount. Jesus did not discriminate, ALL mankind was the target of his GOSPEL and well as healing.

Food for thought !

Car Talk / Re: Man Builds Light Aircraft In Bayelsa by Digiman(m): 2:24pm On Jan 28, 2013
cheesy wink cheesy cry

I don't see what all the fuss and negativity is about, anyone with the some knowledge and the right tools and parts can build an aircraft. However will it achieve flight ?, well that depends on several factors.

My observations based on what's in the pictures are as follows:

1. Landing gear - no brakes !, no shock abosorbers ! ... he may be able to take off but landing may break up the airframe !

2. Wings appear to have control surfaces, lets hope that at least he's also got elevators and he can get them to operate correctly

3. There is no spec for the engine (i.e. power out put), the prop looks smallish, lets hope he has done his calculations weight vs power properly otherwise he won't be going far.

Good luck to him for making an attempt an attempt and I hope he is able to fly it .

Politics / Re: How Well Do You Know Lagos And Her History? by Digiman(m): 2:54pm On Jul 06, 2011
seguno2:

I'm sorry but oral history ALONE will not cut it.
The elder is LIKELY to narrate a story that is embellished to glorify his family/ancestors/clan/tribe etc. The oral history needs to be corroborated by different, independent and (if possible) opposing oral history sources. It should also be corroborated by scientific studies such as archaeology, lingustics, anthropology etc.
You will be surprised at how much similarities in words there are between seemingly diverse, sometimes warring groups of people/"tribes".

I agree with what you say because  it makes makes sense. The history needs to be corroborated by different parties / sources  in order to establish authenticity.

For instance my grand father on my mothers side lived in a remote village about 1 hours drive from Ikeja (turn off the Lagos Ibandan Expressway after Isheri), according to what my mother told me, her father and possibly her grand father  were the very first to "settle" there, however  recently as most of the  grand children of the original settlers have died and development has spread to the area, land ownership disputes have become widespread as the Awori's now claim they were the first to settle there. Without the testimony of those who were first / second hand witnesses to how that settlement came to be it's difficult to establish who is telling the truth.

I still believe that although what you learn via oral history may not be 100% authentic, it cmay still contain little gems of truth which  can help  complete the puzzle.
Politics / Re: How Well Do You Know Lagos And Her History? by Digiman(m): 2:14pm On Jul 05, 2011
The persons best placed to answer this question are the elders, to be precise,  the octogenerians  and beyond who have  have a weath of historical knowledge  passed down verbally (oral history) from generation to generation.  Unfortunately there are not many left around any more who have such knowlwedge.

Forget what's written in the books or the stuff you see in Google / Wikipedia, you want to hear what come from the mouth of a great elder who has never stepped into a classroom.

Nigerai wants Nuclear power stations does it ?, what proof does it have to show that it can maintain these stations to the very high standards that are required ?, what is going to happen to the waste products ?.

Chances are if it goes ahead we will see a situation in which the waste products are disposed of carelessly, in habitants on the local community will come in contact with the highly toxic waste and before long well have mutants all over the place lipsrsealed

The poster deserves to be applauded for his efforts. I will explain why,  firstly he has taken the time and effort to construct that contraption which appears to be a prototype motorbike  which is no easy feat speaking from experience.

Considering that we was able to build it from bits show that he has a creative streak - how many nigerians or Africans can boast of inventing something ?. See this artice http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/7881708.stm

Although the design of his prototytpe does not appear to  practical i.e. I doubt if it could be ridden because 1. The angle of the yoke to which the front wheel is attached looks wrong - such angle will require a very wide turning circle which makes it impractical for normal use on the roads. 2. The front dampers in the position they are do not serve any purpose
Despite these shortcomings it is still a good concept.

If the poster did indeed create this be it a toy or not its still a good start. In a country where people spend years to gain degrees in Engineering only to sit behind desks pushing pens this is  most welcome.

I do not believe he has to divulge details of his "alternative energy" souce for the time being, if he has indeed been able to achive this then my advice is to patent it first before spilling the beans.
Politics / Re: Yaradua Suspends Domestic Passenger Plane In Air For 3 Hrs. by Digiman(m): 9:54pm On Jan 27, 2009
There are so many unanswered questions regarding this story

1. As  a comercial flight, the pilot would have filed a flight plan, the fligh plan would have included an alternate destination if for some reason he or she could not land at the original destination. Why was this not done or maybe they do not do proper fligh planning ?

2. As part of the preparation for the flight the pilot / flight crew should have received information regading the airspace they intended to fly through  such information would include weather reports / forecasts, as well as any flying activity they need to steer clear of  i.e. air space restrictions e.t.c however it appears this information was not available in the first place because if they had known they would have either  delayed the flight or filed a completely new flight plan which would take them away from the restricted airspace/airport.

3. May be the pilot opted to circle for 3 hours till he/she received clearance from ATC, it is not uncommon for this to happen.  As long as there is sufficient fuel on board and the captian is OK with ATC instructions   this does not pose a problem however the captain would still have to monitor fuel consumption  and make a decision call as to when to abandon circling and head for an alternate airport while there is sufficient fuel to reach the alternate airport.

4. Or maybe the pilot got lost  for 3 hours and had to fly  lower so he/she could find visual  cues to indicate where they were ?  wink  ( I am only joking)

Car Talk / Re: New Helmet Rule In Lagos by Digiman(m): 11:32pm On Jan 04, 2009
There is one important point everyone seems to have missed here,  helmets are not "one size fits all" so it will be pointless for the OKADA operator to carry an extra one for his or her passangers.

My advice would be for the frequent OKADA passengers to purchase their own. It's hygenic and you have the assurance that it will be a snug fit and protect your  head in the event of  an accident.

Another reason why you don't want to use one provided by the OKADA operator is that you do not know if the helmet is safe to use, it may have been involved in a accident previously in which case  you  cannot vouch for the structural integrity of the helmet. It's better to be safe than sorry.

I have one which I use for track days, it took me almost an hour to find the right one in the shop I visited.

What is the point ?. If someone sent me a thank you note after attending an interview it would most certainly be disregarded. I am more interested in the persons perfomance at the interview and their suitability to the post they have applied for.

Always remember to thank who ever interviews you after the interview, for instance when the interview ends and before you leave the interview room and also if you are being escotred out to reception for example by a member of the interviewing panel repeat your thanks that should be enough.

Whenever I am interviewing I like to break the ice by using small talk to get a feel for the person, the nwe move on to the main business the interview itself afterwards I expect the interviewee to have questions as well this will show that they have done their research, and finally the exchange of plesantries e.t.c. No point no point in sending afterwards.

Properties / Re: Why Pay House Rent In Advance? by Digiman(m): 10:58pm On Jun 10, 2008
@Busuguma

Here in the UK you are not allowed to take more than 2-3 months deposit from a tenant, this to be kept aside to be refunded to the tenant when they exit the property. You are allowed to deduct any costs you need to recover from the tenant from the deposit in the event that there is damage to your pproperty or its contents.

Secondly there is a  process for evicting tenants which has to be followed otherwise you will be in trouble with the law basicaly you cannot just chuck a non paying tenant out neither can you disconnect utilities i.e. gas , water or electricity or remove doors and windows - you have to go through the proper channels courts e.t.c just to get them out, your chances of recovering unpaid rent may also be very slim once you start the eviction process. If you are unfortunate to have a sit in tenant who knows the law inside out and can use it to their advantage you could end up having to pay mortgage on a property for several months  or years with no rental income coming in for you during the period.

In order to get good tenants you will require references from them as well as credit checks to ensure that the prospective tenant is credit worthy and will not become a nightmare once they move in to your property but the system is not fool proof, we had a set of tenants , two brothers who due to one of them being off work  defaulted on rent payments ,they owed 3 months rent which we never recovered from them, needless to say their deposit was not enough to cover our loss but on the positive side they did not damage anything in the apartment.

As a land lord you have to look after your interest because you have loans/mortgages to repay, your rental property should be seen as a business and not a charity, remember if you cannot pay your cerditors you'll loose the property.

The system here is a lot easier because you do not have to go round asking for rent each month, you just get the tenant to set up a standing order  for the rent to be paid into your account every month, all you need to do is check to make sure the rent is in each month and  chase any late payments and take the apropriate action if it there is a likely hood that you will not get the rent, I normal chasing a a day or two after the rent is due, begining with texts , email then phone calls followed by a letter reminding them thay they will incurr interest on what they owe for each day the rent remains unpaid, if after a after 2-3 weeks nothing is forthcoming then its time to serve an eviction notice and debt recover process.

Compared to what goes in Nigeria this his much easier. We have some office blocks in Lagos with tenants, these are business that we have to chase yearly for rent, each year they come up with empty promises fortunately for them my parents collect the rent so they are soft with them , left to me I would have had them in the streets years ago.

As regards the comment that nigerias do not like paying bills, its very true!, everyone  wants something for nothing !,
I have currently got two nigerian owned businesses I did  some work for  here iin the UK who are refusing to pay up  angry
By the end of this  week , I'll be instructing debt collectors to recover the monies they owe me.
Travel / Re: People Afraid of Flying: What Remedy? by Digiman(m): 7:08pm On Jun 09, 2008
chaircover:

The Emirates planes have on board cameras. One underneath the plane and the other on the nose of the plane. Apparently its supposed to allay the fears of nervous passengers by giving them a sense of understanding of their environment.

This achieved the opposite in my case. On Arriving at Gatwick and the plane was taxing to its allocated hanger and just as I was breathing a sigh of relief, I switched this function on for the first time and nearly collapsed in fear when I saw how close the plane was to the airport terminal building. I was thinking to myself will this plane stop or are we going to go through the glass??

I think most of the fear stems from the fact that as passengers, we have no control over the vehicle. When I am driving and in control of my car, I am happy to do 85 miles an hour on the motorway but I don’t feel comfortable when any one else drives me even at 40 miles an hour and am constantly pressing this imaginary brake and telling the driver to slow down.

As a plane passenger you are relying on many things…… ground technical staff to tighten and fit parts correctly, the correct amount of fuel is put on the plane, Pilots reading the manual correctly and flicking the correct buttons, the doors have been closed properly, the landing gear will work, etc etc etc and …………, of course one hopes that the computers display the correct information to the flight crew……………, Software testers are probably the most nervous passengers J

I read a story a couple of years ago about 1 passenger who died and several others injured in turbulence so I take turbulence very seriously.

…………….and nervous passengers MUST NEVER watch Air Crash Investigation on the national Geographic TV channel.

God is the only one we can & should rely on

@chaircover yoyu are spot on!.

The fear of flying is caused by the fact that the passenger does not know the how and why an aeroplane flies and also they have no control hence the feeling of helplessness.

The best way to overcome the fear of flying is to get to know how and why an aeroplane flies, search the internet and you'll find explanations. Some people may also experience motion sickness whenever they fly, my advice is eat before you fly but do not over eat just do not fly on an empty stomach.

Takeoffs and Landings are the most demanding tasks for the pilot and there is a chance that things may go wrong but rest assured that your pilot has been trained to handle the situation - stalling, failed engine, failed landing gear e.t.c (just pray that they remember what they were taught in flight school !).

As regards trubulence you will enconter them every now and then as long as you are not flying in bad weather you'll be fine. If your pilot has done his/her pre-flight planning and obtained accurate weather reports he /she should be able to plan a route that avoids severe weather area.

I fly light aircraft so I am talking from experience cool.

I don't fy professionaly, I fly as a hobby and I am still working towards my PPL . So far I have flown  a Cessna 140 and  currently train in a Piper Warrior.

When I was much younger I wanted to train as a pilot but could not get funding, NAF was an option then but things did not work out, I also  did the NDA thing  - SSC but was'nt too keen on the prospects in the  NA,  I much preferred  the NAF.

Fastforward several years  later I earn enough to be able to sponsor myself and I am enjyoing it !. I hope to qualify as a Flight Instructor  then I can continue flying in my spare time, I also have the oppurtunity to get into uniform at some point but only as a non combatant cool, then I'll get the chance to fly in some military aircraft .

You fly Alpha jets !, kudos to you, that's one of the coolest fighter jets I have seen and heard, I remember seeing one do a low level pass just a couple of feet above the runway at Ikeja airport during a NAF day celebration in the 80's it was awesome cool.

Your training seems to have geared towards fast jets from the onset, you must be pretty good then.

Hopefuly one day Nigeria will aquire some supersonic jets then you'll get the chance to go MACH 1 wink

@IVY4U

You have the right attitude and determination, well done ! and all the best.

My advice to anyone hoping to embark on a a career in aviation is to stick with the deram and be determined. I have read of people in their late 40's changing career to become airline pilots, by the time they finish their professional training they are already in their early 50's but that does not put them off.

For anyone in Nigeria your best bet is to seek sponsorship because that is the only way you can do it, try airlines and oil companies or join the airforce. Most privately sponsored pilots I know work 2 or 3 jobs to raise funds to train for their Private pilots license then look for loans or sponsorship for the rest of their training but that method may not be possible in Nigeria. Years ago their used to be a flying club in Ikeja, Lagos, does it still exist ?, if so joining the club to do PPL training will be a good start.

@Poster

For you to start a Private School, you must have a different mindset and orientation from where you currently are.

Its people who have the desire to impart Knowledge, teach and nurture others and build a legacy for his or her wards that should go into opening schools.

If you go into it just as a business venture, then you would ultimately mess up the lives of the kids that are placed in your hands when the 'bucks' are not rolling in as planned.

People who have been known to be successful in running schools are those with the innate passion to nurture and impart knowledge.

This translates into well tutored lives, and by extension, happy parents and then comes the financial rewards.

But if its just a business venture, then the reverse would be the case : Unhappy parents, terribly run school and ultimately, a failed 'business venture' .

Hope this helps.

Well said. I also believe you must be an educationist otherwise you'll make a mess of it. On the other hand you could employ an overall head to run it for you but be prepared to employ only the best i n the field and pay top dollar to retain them.
