I'm a proud nd active member of ds forum, I have gotten quite a number of infos buh I'm still in dilemma of my chances of completing my fees myself. I got admission in Sheffield hallam university nd I have paid 1500 pound. my question is what my chances of survival nd completing d fees if I manage to secure Visa?

DO NOT TRY IT! first you can never make enough money legally to complete your school fees, you will suffer for one year and probably not get a job if you manage to finish.

try more progressive countries, forget the UK. I came here with enough money to survive so its not because I am suffering or anything, I am just saving you from heartache

grin grin grin you are not smiling with the UK these days. We need to balance it...if you are coming to the UK to hustle through student visa then forget it because the chances of make it now is slimmer than ever. But you are coming purely to study and leave then the UK is a place for you.

Australia is not even the answer because the UK modelled her immigration policy from Australia, Canada is changing theirs faster as well.

The changes which the Conservative-Lib Dem coalition made affected a lot of students - both legal & illegal. In their attempts to cover the student to citizen loophole, they've now made it a maximum of 5 years to stay in the UK as an international student, unlike all the previous international student laws, they made this one count retroactively, meaning all your previous years now count, regardless of whether or not you completed your degree.

I never paid attention to that new policy until I read your post now, yes they have managed to cut off student to citizenship route but with straight forward combination one can study for more than 5 years maximum.

What do you mean by 5 years as an international student i.e. what does the change in as mean?

Just asking you had to study for 10 years as an international student to apply for residency in the UK.

Not in this country, they'll even calculate to ensure that you haven't exceeded it. We were only 2 people at the university, who had this issue. The other girl was able to finish because after the calculations they discovered she had exactly the 6 months she needed to finish, so her extension was given to those exact 6 months.

My own was a special case, the university never pointed out that the 2 years I'd used for my A-Levels would actually help. All I wanted to do was finish the year, the irony was when I finally got a lawyer & mentioned my A-Levels in passing (while filling out my form), she and her colleague literally said "indefinite leave to remain"' in unison. So in their quest to bounce my butt, they unwittingly enabled me to apply for indefinite leave to remain.

ttmacoy, the new policy means you can only stay a maximum of 5 years as an international student in the UK. So meaning if you've already exceeded the 5 years already (maybe from a previous UK degree, masters with year in industry or whatever), then you'll be unable to apply for a visa. In fact the school would not even give you an acceptance letter.

Previously, all their former international student laws never enforced retroactively, until this one happened. I remember when the news about the limit was revealed the year earlier, I asked the university, they assumed the new rule wouldn't be enforced retroactively...then the government told us otherwise. The university had to reject and rescind their acceptance for a lot of students.

This law is serious. What of if I want to do a PhD and my masters course is approximately 18 months in duration ? (18 months because I started in January;PhD is 4 yrs most times). So I won't be able to do that ?

Wow... Ok that's serious, wasn't aware of this change.

Means your main route to settling is to get a job with a company willing to sponsor you for work permit after studies now.

Yes you can study for more than 5 years in this country, the 5 years limit is targeted at people who spent time studying the same course at the same level just to accumulate years for 10 years residency.
If you spent 1 year studying foundation degree, 4 years studying degree course and 2 years on masters course that is 7 years and it's perfectly legitimate.

There are obvious exceptions, eg those studying PhDs should not be afraid, as long as you haven't done a previous UK PhD, you're good to go.

My advice?Unless you are on scholarship, it is never too late to cancel coming to the UK. Cancel your admission apply to Canada, USA, New Zealand or Australia. You will thank me later for this advice.

Lol, tell them GeneralShepherd? TBH, I'm not quite sure if/why anyone wants to live here permanently. UK's facing one of the toughest times in history. A good percentage of the young citizenry prefer to hang out at local pubs than their forefathers who sought to conquer the world. They blamed the misfortunes of events on the non-eu international immigrants who didn't receive any benefits and eliminated many opportunities for them to find UK an attractive destination. However, the 'benefits' seeking EU immigration was allowed to continue unabated, This saw a dramatic influx of settlers from all over the EU demanding benefits in the UK. Now a referendum is currently sought by the UK to pull out from this same EU. The question is, what would be left of the UK when all these internationals leave? Would the benefits for citizens continue? Would the present crop of partying generation brits be willing to work as hard as the migrants did without extra benefits?.. Food for thought#.

You are just being an alarmist. You probably getting your news from Presstv because you couldn't be more wrong.

The UK is a welfare country with or without contributions from foreigners.

It's easy to condemn others without actually taking the pain to read their statements carefully. You haven't stated what makes me an alarmist. All I did was state the reasons immigration is becoming a key feature in UK policy, and the plan to pull out of the EU is one of them. Contributions aren't only monetary but economical, apart from the fact that the fees of one average international student has been used to sponsor 3 home students in universities, majority of the Nhs workers are international, many aspects of the economy are boosted through immigrants investments, if they weren't benefiting from internationals in any way they wouldn't have even let immigration begin . So I don't understand where the bolded part of your argument stems from. Justwise do your research, you're beginning to lose focus.

You are an alarmist like i said before and some of your facts are 5yrs old and not useful anymore. Home students are now paying £9000 a year fees, so the days of £3000 school fees went more 4yrs ago, school fees from foreign students are not funding home students education as you claimed.

Immigration has always been center of political discussion, not only in the UK but in many countries even South Africa. This is election time in UK so many political parties are including immigration problem in their manifestos, only one party(UKIP) has ant-immigration agenda but UKIP stand no chance of winning an election let a lone implementing their manifesto.

UKIP is the only ant-EU party again with only 2 MPs in house of parliament their chances of making that change is remotely slim.

If you read up you will realize that investment from foreign students have reduced in the last 2-3 years because of the removal of PSW but home students pay more now.

Point 1: I am well aware of the changes in tuition charged for Home students. If you focus on my sentences you would see that I stated ''has been used'' and not ''is being'' which shows I was referring to the past. And you are wrong about 5yrs ago, most universities only began implementing btw £6000-£9000 tuition charge for home students from 2012 so its fairly recent and at about the same time as PSW was eliminated. It was only necessary that they make Home students pay more for their immigration decisions.

Point 2. Where in this statement does removal of benefits for home students not connect with the immigration point I've been making? It's either you do not know what an alarmist is or you are admitting to be one yourself.

I just bumped into an article online now, http://www.theguardian.com/education/2015/apr/23/are-international-students-getting-a-raw-deal . maybe you would call them alarmists too, but the fact is you are backing up the wrong tree with a baseless argument that wasn't warranted in the first place. Critical reasoning is a characteristic trait that is termed Alarmist by those who don't understand its basic function. I expect better from you Justwise, but yet again I might be wrong as you so strongly want to believe.

The sections in bold are my issues with your post, yes i know what being alarmist is...someone who exaggerates a danger and so causes needless worry or panic.

The article you posted is stating the fact, far different from exaggerating issues just to create panic.

GeneralShepherd was making a very important point which i completely understand. Miss-informing people is not the right way to go about it.

Not everybody wants to come to the UK and remain after their studies, GeneralShepherd's post was targeting those who are planning to come to hustle through education.

Lol, Pweedy B I hope you are joking?

where is your first degree from again, Imperial, Cambridge or Oxford. There are 2 main bodies that rank UK Universities if I can call them that. Times University and Guardian. If you go on to the Guardian, that same RGU goes up the rank by 4. You cannot go by those rankings . That is not to say you should go and attend the bottom 3 Universities on the tables, however if you are aiming for only the best of the best may as well stick with the top 5, they rarely if ever change.

And if you schooled in some Nigerian University, you shouldn't really be casting stones at RGU. FYI,I schooled in Nigeria smiley

Hello.

I'm considering attending University of Reading. They've even asked me to start my transfer process (I have a diploma from UNILAG).

However, I'm wondering if there are schools on the UK that'll enable me obtain my Bachelor's in 2 - 2 and a half years instead of three.

Time frame is crucial in this matter. If it wasn't, I would be studying in the US (I'm a US citizen).

I know they have fast track degrees I'm Universities like Staffordshire, City University London, etc but I fear I might be unable to keep up with the strenuous and Herculeanous workload.

You can check out London School of Commerce which is affliated to Cardiff Metropolitan Uni or School of Business and Law which is affliated to Anglia Ruskin Uni. and they are both High tier sponsors for the uk visa and u could complete your bachelors in 2yrs
