Nothing like great wall of Benin. Even in history it was the Oyo empire that had walls, urban settlement. Not to forget Queen Amina of Zazzau who built walls all over the cities and towns she conquered.
Benin is not an empire who dash una self that word "empire".

"The King of Benin can in a single day make 20,000 men ready for war, and, if need be, 180,000, and because of this he has great influence among all the surrounding peoples. . . . His authority stretches over many cities, towns and villages. There is no King thereabouts who, in the possession of so many beautiful cities and towns, is his equal."

The city engaged extensively in trade and became
wealthy. It was known for its powerful cavalry. The
capital city was Oyo-Ile, also sometimes called
Katunga or Old Oyo. The palace of the ruler (oba)
was the most important building. The large market
was the heart of the city. There was a tall wall
made of earth around the city for defense.

No one is saying Oyo is bad and Benin is good. But the wall of Benin is something all Africans should be proud of.

Walls of Benin

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Walls of Benin were a combination of ramparts and moats, called Iya in the local language, used as a defense of the historical Benin City, formerly of the now defunct Kingdom of Benin and now the capital of the present-day Edo State of Nigeria. It was considered the largest man-made structure lengthwise, second only to the Great Wall of China, and was hailed as the largest earthwork in the world. With more recent work by Patrick Darling [of Bournemouth University, UK], it has been established as the largest man-made structure in the world, larger than Sungbo's Eredo [another massive earthworks in Ijebu Ode]. It enclosed 6,500 km² of community lands. Its length was over 16,000 km of earth boundaries. It was estimated that earliest construction began in 800 AD and continued into the mid 1400's.

Let me break it down:

1. Yoruba language is to Binis what English is to Nigerians.

2. Agbada/Buba & Sokoto(Yoruba outfit) is to Binis what suit, shirt and trouser is to Nigerians.

3. Ifa/Ogboni(Yoruba religion) is to Binis what Christianity is Nigerians.

Got it?

Jesus Christ, wentin concern Bini man concern. agbada,IFA worship in Benin? my friend wake up,just travel to Benin city and stop saying rubbish, the deities in Benin tradictions are Ogun(iron god),oromila, ailala,do u know am a Bini person I have no clue on single sentence in Yoruba means,we Neva know our language finish na Yoruba we wan go learn, which kind inferiority complex dey worry you

Try and imagine the extent the Benin empire stretched. I guess you are using todays Benin to gauge your view of that large and mighty Ancient Kingdom..It stretched all the way to present day Ogun state so that wall is part of the Ancient Benin Kingdom.

I say it as I see it, you are not up to that standard to hate. I don't like when cockroaches talk like an elephant. Benin was a tiny kingdom NEVER an empire. And what will I be touring in Edo when my town Ijebu Ode gets more tourist action than your whole state. You need to save yourself from shame and stop talking nonsense. What Benin has always been is exactly what you see when you look at it, the short man trying to talk big. If not allowing your lies to stick means hatred for you, the floor is yours. That Wikipedia that can be edited is your reference point is weak. You were never the story you tell about yourselves and still ain't,

You were never a great people or world renowned and still ain't. Check, you couldn't colonise the the hamlets around your town, yet you call yourself what again?

Benin was NEVER an empire, it doesn't matter how many surrogate writers you employ to write books.

There was a documentary shown here recently about Benin, and the white man said Benin kingdom.

If you are tired, go and sleep.
Not all historians are legit, that's why they have to be corroborated and discoveries are analyzed by experts.
Your stories can't be corroborated within Nigeria, and don't make sense.

So how did you tell your story before now? The whole world can't see what wasn't there, only now you inferior schizophrenic people are just trying to make up history for yourselves, you didn't have any.

That's what I don't get... because even history students in school RARELY discuss naija history, they mainly concerned with discussing foreigners. Such a shame.

Which version of history are you talking about here? On this one thread few can agree on where boundaries were, who lived where, what they wore, what language was spoken first, which religions were here first and which tribe was most influential.

Imagine a history class where radical tribalists start physically fighting each other over perceived differences. Is Nigeria ready to collect it's various histories and become one nation? I often wonder. I've been talking to Nigerians for a few years now. Is it possible to write a history book that won't cause a riot? You tell me?

History is extremely important. If nothing else, so we don't make the same mistakes over and over. It is also important to know where we come from.

Those who don't remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

Do you even know the meaning of Yoruba? A derogatory word derived from yar'riba. Used by the fulani jihadist to refer to ur ancestors as conquered tribe and runaway slaves from north east Africa? Oyo itself was never an empire but a military brigade used by criminals to raid traders until they were sacked severally by d nupe n final blowdealt by alimi n co.

You are a dullard!
Oba Ehengbuda died in battle in a bid to annex Owo. Since then, Obas stopped going to war.
If Benin could not annex Owo, how can you rank it above ancient Ife, Ibadan, Oyo etc
Yorubas have always lived in big, planned towns.

You're a buhari (dead brain). The Benin kingdom is the most supreme. The Yoruba history is not authentic. I stay at Ibadan, and believe me when I say I've heard like 3 different story about the Yorubas.
