Politics / Re: Why Is Obasanjo Not Invited To The G8 Summit This Year? by SIBLI06(m): 1:41pm On May 05, 2006
my2cents:

It could also be one of the following:

- He went at first so as to convince the G8 folks of the need for Nigeria to be unburdened of her debt. I believe we just made our last payment. In other words, goal achieved. No need attended further.

- They only invited him when they wanted something from him, as in oil. Now that they have achieved their purpose, like an orange, after sucking it dry and eating the pulp, they have tossed him out the window.

Just wondering out loud (No your not, your stating your belief)

@my2cents, I totally agree and I'm pleased that obj achieved his main goal regarding Nigeria's debt to the Paris club. However I disagree with the second statement and think it is biased and uncalled for (Opinions are to be discussed not dismissed). You make out like there is no oil left in Nigeria, OK there is a real problem in the delta region but don't forget offshore. Nigeria is blessed with so much oil, it's practically floating on the black gold.

The issue is an extremely difficult one, Nigerian's feels that other countries only get involved with Nigeria because of there oil. Now this is not entirely true in my opinion. I do admit it is a big factor however, in my book it always returns down to present and past leaders of Nigeria. Deals are signed and agreed by all parties before exploration and production starts. So if the money from the sales is not put back into the country whose fault is it? Is it the oil companies or the leaders? I spent 5 years working in the delta for SPDC and I have seen the money that is being paid to the local communities, we are not talking about a few dollars here.

I don't want to make out that shell is everything, it's not. I am merely stating my beliefs. I look forward to hearing your response as I often find your posts informative.

Much Respect.

It's business afterall. I don't claim to know too much about the history of Nigeria, I am more than willing to learn as my wife is Nigerian.

I believe OBJ was not invited due to the 3rd term issue.

Nairaland / General / Re: Halloween- Is It A Good or Bad Celebration? by SIBLI06(m): 8:48am On May 04, 2006
Lighten up peeps! It's only fun!!! I don't care to know how and why it originated, all I know is that kids all over the world love it.

If it makes so many thousands of people have fun and smile what is the problem?

For those who are intrested see the story of Halloween below

The Story of Halloween (Source - http://www.scottishradiance.com/halstory.htm)
Halloween is one of the oldest holidays with origins going back thousands of years. The holiday we know as Halloween has had many influences from many cultures over the centuries. From the Roman's Pomona Day, to the Celtic festival of Samhain, to the Christian holidays of All Saints and All Souls Days.

Hundreds of years ago in what is now Great Britain and Northern France, lived the Celtics. The Celtics worshipped nature and had many gods, with the sun god as their favorite. It was "he" who commanded their work and their rest times, and who made the earth beautiful and the crops grow.

The Celtics celebrated their New Year on November 1st. It was celebrated every year with a festival and marked the end of the "season of the sun" and the beginning of "the season of darkness and cold."

On the eve before their new year (October 31), it was believed that all the dead people were called together . The dead would take different forms, with the bad spirits taking the form of animals. The most evil taking the form of cats.

On October 31st after the crops were all harvested and stored for the long winter the cooking fires in the homes would be extinguished. The Druids, the Celtic priests, would meet in the hilltop in the dark oak forest (oak trees were considered sacred). The Druids would light new fires and offer sacrifices of crops and animals. As they danced around the the fires, the season of the sun passed and the season of darkness would begin.

When the morning arrived the Druids would give an ember from their fires to each family who would then take them home to start new cooking fires. These fires would keep the homes warm and free from evil spirits.

The November 1st festival was named after Samhain and honored both the sun god and Samhain. The festival would last for 3 days. Many people would parade in costumes made from the skins and heads of their animals. This festival would become the first Halloween.

During the first century the Romans invaded Britain. They brought with them many of their festivals and customs. One of these was the festival know as Pomona Day, named for their goddess of fruits and gardens. It was also celebrated around the 1st of November. After hundreds of years of Roman rule the customs of the Celtic's Samhain festival and the Roman Pomona Day mixed becoming 1 major fall holiday.

The next influence came with the spread of the new Christian religion throughout Europe and Britain. In the year 835 AD the Roman Catholic Church would make November 1st a church holiday to honor all the saints. This day was called All Saint's Day, or Hallowmas, or All Hallows. Years later the Church would make November 2nd a holy day. It was called All Souls Day and was to honor the dead. It was celebrated with big bonfires, parades, and people dressing up as saints, angels and devils.

But the spread of Christianity did not make people forget their early customs. On the eve of All Hallows, Oct. 31, people continued to celebrate the festival of Samhain and Pomona Day. Over the years the customs from all these holidays mixed. October 31st became known as All Hallow Even, eventually All Hallow's Eve, Hallowe'en, and then - Halloween.

The Halloween we celebrate today includes all of these influences, Pomona Day's apples, nuts, and harvest, the Festival of Sanhain's black cats, magic, evil spirits and death, and the ghosts, skeletons and skulls from All Saint's Day and All Soul's Day.
Computers / Re: Best Home Internet Service In Nigeria? by SIBLI06(m): 2:52pm On May 03, 2006
Christino:

Wait for Accelon's Home Users solution. You know these guys are geared @ providing the best services, strictly speaking their 32K connection is more like 128K of most ISPs, a clear edge plus 24/7 technical support, that's where I like them.

Their solution will be out in the next few weeks, but i won't be needing it because i have it already, and its working fine.

@christino, I wonder why it is ok at moment? of cause it will be working well now if it has not been fully launched!!! Within a short space of time it will be like so many in the market these days, the companies over subscribe user's because they live for today and can not see past the week!! I have changed provider probably 5 times in the last 2 years. Multilinks remains the safest choice!
Computers / Re: Dial Up Internet In Nigeria by SIBLI06(m): 3:25pm On May 02, 2006
The best I have found so far (Lagos) is Multilinks. I tried the Mweb set-up, it cost about 30K for the equipment (When it first came out in Naija), I bought the extra phone line etc etc. How was the service I hear you ask!

Well i'm now back using Multilinks and I'm using my satalite dish to watch tv! and not browse!!

Multilinks is 15K per month for 24/7 connection, it's ok but still alot of money.

Has anybody used Mweb recently??

My misses uses both, (Not at the same time knuckle head shocked) depending on the time of the day and the flow rate (I did not mean for it to sound like a tap).

Phones / Re: New Virus Alert For Nokia 7610. by SIBLI06(m): 12:24pm On May 02, 2006
Found this that might help.

If your phone is infected with Comwarrior and you cannot install files over bluetooth, you can download F-Secure Mobile Anti-Virus directly to your phone

1. Open web browser on the phone
2. Go to http://mobile.f-secure.com
3. Select link "Download F-Secure Mobile Anti-Virus" and then select phone model
4. Download the file and select open after download
5. Install F-Secure Mobile Anti-Virus
6. Go to applications menu and start Anti-Virus
7. Activate Anti-Virus and scan all files

After disinfecting you phone, you can remove remaining empty directories by going to application manager and uninstalling the SIS file in which Comwarrior arrived (either commw.sis or random name)

I hope that helps.

@ZAHYMAKA, i'll gladly tell you why I'm getting less and less intrested in NL.

Another perfect example is the message that was waiting from me when I logged on today. The message was from Admin. Basically telling me that I should avoid confrontation on line, he also stated there are numerous other forums to go to, he even posted the links for the other websites. What is all that about, can he not tell me what it was I did wrong?? To me Seun is v clever but he seems to be suffering from mood swings recently and his posts / messages reflect this.

I wish I had not deleted the message. (Seun post your message to me here to others can see it. I don't suppose he will.

What really gets to me is the changing of posts by admin. The lack of control we have as members it's farcical. I joined the forum to find out more about Nigeria and to share knowledge. Not to be controlled!

Seun seems to be very moody recently, the way he runs NL shows that.

Health / Re: Why Do We Keep Suffering From Malaria? by SIBLI06(m): 2:53pm On Apr 28, 2006
I would much prefer to be in Nigeria than the UK if I had malaria. When you tell the doc in the UK you think you have malaria you are rushed (I mean rushed, sirens blazing) to the nearest tropical disease center like you have only hours to live. Here at least the medication is widely available to most and the doctors are experts at treating it.

I feel for the people that can not afford the medicine and would love to see free treatment for malaria given to all who needs it. One day!!
