RektGeo:
I have a question regarding adding a spouse. I know everyone's personal circumstance is different, so I'm really just asking for what people think, in general. People with specific experiences/advice should please share too ohh.

For someone who is unmarried, when is the "best time" to arrange, say a court marriage, and add your spouse? Would it be post AOR, post PPR, post COPR, or post landing? Does the stage of addition typically influence the processing time for the spouse? Apart from post landing, do you always need to update POF? Just want to hear people's opinion.

This is delicate one here and a lot of the "before before" processes have changed. I'll wait for the elders to handle this one as it is delicate.

It will end in praise IJN!

Family / Re: Where Should You Build Your First House (city Or Village)? by TCann(m): 11:03pm On Jul 10, 2016
For some of us it's not simple to define city or village.

I was born and grew up in Ibadan. My Grandfather, the first Health Inspector of the old Western States moved to Ibadan in the early 1900s and settled and built a house there. We were originally from Ijebu Ode, at least my father was born and schooled there.

My Wife is from Ibadan also.

So tell me, where is my city and where is my village?

OP, build your house where it makes economic sense for your individual situation. Don't be moved by emotional stimulus.

I am building my house in Ibadan as it makes economic sense for me. As much as I hate Lagos I would even build there for economic reasons before thinking if Ijebu Ode.

PS: What racial war?

If you're thinking of racial war then keep your money in a bank and set up your family in a non war zone, if it exists at all in Nigeria. You think Boko or Delta folks can't travel to get you in your village?

What is it with my Ibadan born&bred brothers and sisters and their disdain for Las gidi? Lolz.

I hear this especially from Ibadan folks all too often...
I even have a friend that had to resign his job to return to Ibadan (in a better Lagos of Fashola era o, when Lag don become soft pap to handle)
I'm sure he won't even last a week if it were to be Lagos of pre-Tinubu era.

I schooled and lived in Ibadan for almost a decade...Ib has a way of making you laid back. You just get used to that easy going way of life and very few people will want to leave that type of life and adapt to the fast paced life in Las gidi which they describe variously as hectic, crowded, problematic etc....

But guess what, if you can survive in Lag, you should be able to survive almost anywhere in the world (correct me if I'm wrong!)

OmoBendel24:

Go add travel experience. Aside the travel history thing touched, what in your adjudication has changed since your last interview at the embassy? A proper transcript may help here cos sometimes one may zero in on travel experience as the cause of refusal, and engage in some quality travels however, and still be refused visa at the next interview.

Abeg, people should stop this funny trend of "you were denied because you have no travel history". For a fact, nobody gets denied a visa (especially UK or US) strictly or narrowly for not having travelled out before.

I read this thing on several fora and it makes me laugh...how people gets misguided to start chasing south African, Ghana or Dubai visas to "disvigin" their "pali" (ie passport) so as to stand a better chance when applying for UK or US.

I stand to be corrected, but from my practical information, good people, there is nothing as such...with your freshly minted passport acquired last week, painstakingly fulfilling 95% of visa conditions, without having travelled out of naija before, you can most definitely get your UK or US. I'm cock sure about this.

People should dismystify this visa procedure thingy and don't make it always look like it's based on some funny myths...Majorly by researching the procedure deeply and personally, we can achieve a position of less of what "Justwise said" and more of "discovered facts backed by immigration rules and regulations"....every material needed is available on the internet.

I hear all sorts even from people that are supposed to know(outside NL o), they will say "you want to waste your money abi?" I laugh them off (because I know what I ve researched deeply into even immigration regulations) and everytime, I get my visa and that of my family anyways.

Success to us all and those of us not travelling this year too. Lolz.

@OP,
I try to feel your pain...your feeling of failure (especially when you have always suceeded in almost all your major feats over the years). Follow one of the major advice though...let her be for a while and distract yourself with one of the healthy things you love doing like sports and others (not those bad stuffs o)and keep fighting for the unity of your family ,especially for your daughter's sake in the place of prayers...if God so wishes, he will grant you your request, if God has something better in stock for you, then, you may have to move on with your life (painful and easier said than experienced)

Back then, there was a lot of passion and interest to know, know and know more!!!! This is what I see majorly lacking these days with my bruvs and sis in school.

@Op...

You mentioned the word 'rich' 11 good times in your short write-up.

Haba!!! Maka why.

It looks to me that your circle of relations and family (you mentioned your brother's comment) are vain and materialistic...

I doubt it whether that can get you far in marriage.

You sounded like you will easily worship the ground that your 'so called 'big boys' step and hang on every drop of the drooling gibberish from their mouths.

Several factors make people make money and several factors also make people lose money. Its an uncertain world, my dear!

I know someone who started life with 20k salary, 2015 (5 yrs after) owns a house in London at less than 35 years of age, you see, you just can never tell...Your so called very rich guys, 10 years from now, can you ascertain their financial fate??

Of course, its good not to enter the boat with a guy that do not have plans of hitting it big (cos money matters big time, trust me, I can tell you), but most of us come as diamond in the rough...

Just look out for the burning hunger and zeal in him to make it and his concrete and practical efforts towards making it (not those that build their castles in the air, planning to buy houses in Ikoyi without any efforts whatsoever to actualizing that dream) and you will be good to go!!

In conclusion, prayer and God make for the best and lasting choice.

Just to advise you, why don't you try Dubai and Ghana first. Then apply. That's what I did. Disvirgin your pali first.

The 'wrongest' advice you can ever get on non-immigrant (visit) visa matters.

It amuses me when people tell you..."ol'boy go to SA, Dubai first o, to 'disvirgin' your pali", because having taken my time to read extensively UK immigration rules and guidelines guiding visa officers in making their decisions as to visa grant or refusals, then I began to appreciate the efforts of Justwise and others here (these guys are mobile encyclopaedia of knowledge) helping us to eraze our ignorance on many entry clearance issues. (Ol'boy, the Immigration Rules and Guidelines broad and extensive, no be small o,had to abandon it at some point! everything is on the internet)

Visas are granted (without sentiments or emotions) largely objectively when you meet the set down immigration rules, also visa processing shouldn't be spiritualized too. (my opinion though)

I have been granted visas as well as refused...thinking in retrospect now, having been armed with better information, I agreed that I deserved the refusal.

When I was granted my 1st ever visa to the UK, not only was I granted on a virgin passport, I applied for my family, other than my wife who had travelled to the UK before, my children applied with virgin passports. Meeting the requirements and without having to travel first to Dubai as a family to disvirgin our passports, we were all granted visa for holiday on our 'virgin' visa-less passports as a family.

Also on this other issue of "your-wife-must-bear-your-surname-on-her-passport", my wife still had her maiden surname as her surname on her passport as at the time we had our 1st ever travel together as a family, and recently renewed her passport with her maiden surname still as her surname (as we were not ready to go through the stress of change of name, Abuja Immigrations HQ runs etc)(at Ikoyi Passport office, the officers there kept making a fuss that my wife still wanted to re-list her maiden surname on her new passport and made it clear that we will be refused at the embassy. We just smiled and thanked them) and she still was granted visa on that renewed passport together with the rest of the family recently.

I just thought to push this out there to save some couples and their new families the stress. I dont think its worth it jor!

Calm down and know the rules! grin grin

Safe trips to all intending people (and families) in the course of the year!

Shoutout to JUSTWISE, VICJUSTICE AND OTHERS doing a great work here!!

Politics / The 9 Biggest Political Casualties Of The 2015 Nigerian General Elections by TCann(m): 9:18am On Apr 14, 2015
The April 11 Gubernatorial and State Assembly elections have come and gone, bringing to an end over 12 months of rigorous electioneering and scheming. Winners have emerged and the also-rans are counting their financial and political loses. Some losers, however, were obviously worse affected than others. Below is a compilation of the biggest casualties of the March 28 and April 11 political hurricanes.

Mua'zu Babangida Aliyu:
The Niger State "Chief Servant's" woeful performance at both the March 28 and April 11 elections has called into question his supposed status as a force to be reckoned with in the Nigerian political equation. The long-serving Chairman of the Northern States Governors' Forum (NSGF) not only failed to "deliver" his state to the PDP's Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in the Presidential Polls and in his bid to ensure that his anointed candidate, Umar Nasko, succeeds him at the Minna Government House, but he also fluffed in his quest to represent the Niger East Senatorial Zone in the 8th Senate. It's really been a season of reality checks for the once-influential governor, a politician who was reportedly being groomed by some power brokers in the North to succeed Goodluck Ebele Jonathan come 2019. He was even widely quoted in the local press few weeks ago as saying that he intends to "mark time" in the Senate while he awaits the 2019 General Elections when he would take a shot at the country's top job. All that is up in the air now. As it stands, instead of waiting in the senate, he will be marking time at home while he counts his loses and plans his next political move.

Lagos PDP:
These are not the best of times for the PDP nationwide, more so in Lagos state. The party's huge losses at the polls is made much worse by the fact that Lagos state is the de facto nerve center of the APC. Depending on how the APC goes about governing both the country and the state, the once-dominant PDP may be reduced to oblivion. The PDP's sudden loss of prominence will definitely instigate a flurry of realignments and defections into the new ruling party. The losses will be asphyxiating no doubt, but the PDP's continued survival and robustness in Lagos state is crucial for the democracy over there, else the "Center of Excellence" runs the risk of becoming a one-party state where no-one dares question or check the excesses of the ruling party. Four years is not eternity; 2019 is not as far as it seems. There's enough time between now and then for the party to rediscover itself and mount a greater challenge.

David Mark and Gabriel Suswam:
Not even the combined might of a two-time Senate President and an incumbent governor could stop the APC from snatching a hard-fought victory in Benue state. The PDP's latest defeat in Benue didn't come as a surprise to many this time around, following its shock loss in the state at the presidential polls. The party's overall poor showing at the National Assembly elections will almost certainly cost David Mark the presidency of Nigeria's Upper Legislative Chamber — a position which he has held since 2007 — while Governor Suswam's running battle with the Benue state civil servants has cost him both a ticket to the 8th Senate and a governorship ticket for his anointed candidate, Terhemen Tarzoor. What becomes of both men in the Nigerian political arena come the next administration is anyone's guess.

Nuhu Ribadu:
The revered former anti-corruption boss' sojourn into the murky waters of politics has so far not been fruitful. He contested and lost the 2011 Presidential elections on the platform of the ACN to the PDP's Goodluck Jonathan. In 2014, he controversially defected to the PDP from what had morphed into the APC with hopes of contesting on the platform of the PDP and probably winning the Adamawa state gubernatorial election. However, it was not to be. He was gifted the opportunity of running for the office, but he was always doomed to fail, following alleged anti-party activities and sabotage by members of his own party. This culminated in a comprehensive defeat on April 11, where he finished in an embarrassing third place.

Chibuike Amaechi:
His party may have been victorious at the Presidential polls, but it's been a pyrrhic victory for the APC chieftain. His failure to "deliver" his state to the All Progressives' Congress a fortnight ago was partially overlooked and forgiven amidst the euphoria surrounding their triumph at the national level, but April 11's heavy defeat will not go unnoticed. The Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council could do little as his party was trounced in a state where he is the governor, at the hands of the his arch rival, the Dame Patience Jonathan-backed Nyesom Wike of the PDP. Amaechi may be an integral part of the incoming APC-led federal government, but back home in the South South, his influence has been significantly whittled down.

Namadi Sambo:
Even his status as the incumbent Vice President and a one-time governor of Kaduna could not ward off a heavy loss for his party in his home state. Though no-one really expected him to "deliver" the North — or even the North West — to the PDP, the low-key and ever-smiling Vice President should have brought much more to the table in the March 28 and April 11 elections than he ended up doing.

Adamu Mu'azu:
This has been the People's Democratic Party's worst performance since its inception in 1998, prior to Nigeria's return to civilian rule. Every organization has a leader whose responsibilities are to manage its affairs and accept culpability for the outcomes of his managerial decisions and tactics, especially when they are negative. In this instance, Mu'azu (branded the "Game Changer" by his PDP colleagues) must shoulder the blames for his party's disastrous outing in the just-concluded polls, though it was not entirely of his own making. Under his watch, the PDP lost several states where it was once dominant, including Plateau, Niger, Adamawa, Benue, Katsina and Kaduna (Abia will also likely be lost to APGA), and it put up a limp performance in Opposition-controlled states where it was expected to do much better, including Oyo, Ogun, Nasarawa, Kano, Kwara, Sokoto, Lagos and Bauchi, his home state. Considering the amount of resources that was poured into the 2015 general elections by the PDP, the end product has been nothing short of disastrous.

Goodluck Ebele Jonathan:
He's, without a doubt, the biggest loser here, yet the manner in which he quickly conceded defeat and saved the country another round of senseless bloodshed has made him victorious in defeat. His political miscalculations, faux pas, misguided appointments and perceived leniency towards corruption all conspired to make him the first incumbent Nigerian Head of State to lose a presidential election. That notwithstanding, His Excellency deserves our dispassionate commendation for overseeing one of the most peaceful and successful elections in Nigeria's history, even in the face of intense pressure to manipulate the process.
