2good: Ok first most of my friend that studied here made 1st class in their Bachelors studies in Nigeria. I made a 2-1 with a GP of above 4 point. The scholarship we all got is not PTDF but some other scholarship sponsored by either company, the university or the Dutch government. One of my friend got a scholarship from Shell Netherlands, myself and another got a scholarship called the Netherlands Fellowship Program(NFP) that requires you to have some work experience and also studying a course relevant to the development of your country in a Dutch university. The guy who got Shell scholarship studied Geophysics and current have a job with Statoil Norway. The other one that got NFP scholarship is working for a servicing company as a Production log analyst in Belgium. The friend working in Schlumberger got a partial scholarship from the Petroleum Engineering department. Every one of us studied at the Delft University of Technology, Netherlands. Besides the Geophysics guy, we all studied Petroleum Engineering and Geoscience.
The truth about scholarship is you have to research yourself and apply. There is no guarantee of getting the scholarship but you just have to apply for as much as you see and bear in mind that most times you compete with people globally for scholarship. About getting job, several companies come to campus to recruit as most of us got our job through the campus recruitment. However, getting a job have alot to do with yourself and not just going to a university. Most of these guys are very smart above the average Nigerian and are able to convince their potential employer that they are qualified to be employed because you have to compete with European citizen and the general rule is European first before non-Europeans but at thesame time, the companies will hire you if you can prove to them that you are good and also the class size is small. We were like 18 in my masters class from like 12 different countries and job placement was like 80% before graduation.
But I will still recommend you go to an American University to study preferable U Texas @ Austin, Texas A&M, Louisiana State University, University of Oklahoma, University of Houiston and Colorado School of Mines. Jobs are easier to get in the oil and gas industry in the US because there are more oil and gas companies in the US than any other country and the schools I mentioned above organise on campus recruitment which is a big advantage as you get to be interviewed by several companies before you graduate and it is easier getting a job on campus than after graduation. UK is a no no for me because there are so many Nigerians to compete with and the UK economy is struggling.
man, thank you for the insightful comment. UK? That is a no go area for me. The reason I stated that Canada is good was due to observation and prediction for the future. I see Canada as an evolving economy in oil and gas industry and hence wanting to one of the few starters made me decide plus the possibility of being a citizen easily.

I am graduating as an HND holder this year, please where or which school in the US can I do a postgraduate diploma in petroleum engineering before proceeding for a masters? Kindly feed me.

TisaBone: and all of you men on nairaland say that women are gold diggers. I must admit, it was mighty tempting, but he told me his age and i flipped. at 23, a 34 year old man is way too old for me. but for some reason i feel like i did something wrong, or that i should have given him a chance. but at the same time, this gives me the strength to resist other men. I can always tell them "look, i turned down a guy who was pushing a mercedes, what makes you think that I would put up with your mess?"

on the other hand im scolding myself. What is wrong with me!!! I feel like im self sabotaging or something.
wait, when you turn 27 you will come back here and say: HELP! I am 27 and I want to settle down.

The only thing I see here is that you are being proud of the age. You feel you are too young and that so many guys would come around.

tanimola22: Hahahaha. You learn being sociable little by little. I was almost like you some years ago, but now I can walk up to anybody and strike a conversation.

Interviews are almost about being liked by the interviewer. This usually occurs during the first three minutes of conversation. It is not always the best that gets the jobs, it is the person that clicks with the interviewers. Would you want to work with a very brilliant dude that you do not click with? Perhaps no!

Do a PgDip as you have suggested. While at it, apply to any oil companies you can think about. You may be shocked because Baba has his ways of doing things. The same thing happened to one of my, well someone I know. The dude is a very big oil guy today, but got in with an HND plus PgDip. The dude believes that his opportunity was magic as he never believed that he could even get interviews, not to now talk of landing an offer. The dude is a so called big man and lives a large life. He also lived in Texas for 2 years when his company sent him down for some trainings here and there.

To reiterate, I strongly ask that you go on with your PgDip plans and then apply like crazy to all these companies. No one knows what may happen.

All the best.

T22

When you say overrated it means its not worth the hype like we hear in movies, read from novels etc. This elements have contributed negatively to relationship.

SefB: smiley smiley smileyHello guys,
Im a 2:1 graduate of petroleum engineering, ive finishes nysc and working now with a multi national service coy, the salary isnt fantastic
Truth is,oil and gas producing is here want to be, i dont mind going back to school two years for that.
I hear UK isnt the best these days as there are less cjances of getting a job/beign recruited from school.

Can anyone pls advice me? Canada or US? which is better? i mean better in the sense of getting a job after school?
what schools do u suggest? Im thinking M.Eng petroleum engineering all over agian.. so that i wont lose chances cos i specialised lol.

Thanks guys

ps: im new on here
man, your best option is Canada. Their oil sector is booming right now. I read some here on NL that the US has cut off buying oil from Nigeria and now shifted attention to Canada. Plus I get over 40 vacancy email alert every month from indeed.com and all are from companies in Canada. I streamline it to feed me only vacancy from canada, specifically production operation. So, you can do same for other areas like reservoir, completion, drilling etc.

The only thing holding me back is finance. If I can get $25k, I am gone. I will do a PGD and then master degree and get a job.

The funny thing is that they don't discreminate like we do hear in Nigeria, nothing like age limit badashy.
CareerRe: Total Oil And Gas Workers by 2sexy(m):
tanimola22: Hey man, I know PTI. It is a nice one mhen, congrats in advance. I am not sure you will find it too hard to land an oil job. Have you been applying?

T22.
yes, I have but mainly using my OND due to the fact that I do not have the HND cert. yet.

I dont want to duel on my HND alone.

How do I break into the oil industry in Nigeria is my problem. I don't know anyone except my God.

I see you have experience with HR. Can you tell me what they look for during interviews? Is one expected to answer all interview question correctly and do they disqualify someone if the sense shyness( i am not the social kind) and this has an effect on me due to my inability to socialise and interact with people often. I had to join the choir at school and also join the press and SPE at school just to get over it but i still help.
