OP, I wished I could suggest something but the truth is that no matter what I say, you would hardly understand much. No thanks to the fact that most people aren't financially intelligent nor skilled.

Firt of all, get this two 3 books and read them:1. Rich Dad Poor Dad, 2. Rich Dad's Guide to Investment 3. Think and Grow Rich. This will help you develop the kind of mind needed to excel in business, but not absolutely though. Atleast, that should be a starting point.

Do you have a laptop? If you do, I could show you a way to download the books free.
Call me on saturday, 23rd of june . My number is in my signature so that I can advice you.

T22, you are the real deal. Man, we go rob mind when I grad in less than 2months time. I have questions to ask.

Anyway, I got your email from another thread.

At GboyegaD, I can't send you an email here. This nairaland has made it even difficult and its not so user friendly for that purpose. Do you know how I can send you the email?

GboyegaD: This is one of the challenges of the Nigerian Youth creating obstacle where actually there is none. Just strive to finish with an Upper Credit and I can assure you by WES evaluation, you sure would meet the minimum 3.0 GPA required for admission. Like Ak adviced, you would need to prepare well for the GRE and get a good score and write a very good statement of purpose and you sure would get the desired admission.
Lastly, I would advise you read well about the funding options in your school so that you are sure they have very good funding to see you through school.
Thanks man. I know I will. I visited the university of texas website and their minimum requirement for master's degree is 3.20. Again I will like to know if the university of texas and texas a&m are they the same or different schools? AKtunde, please send me your email via the email in my signature or follow me so the I can PM you. GboyegaD, kindly do the same. thank you.

aktunde: As for the guy asking me not to return now, wetin I wan come do? As a Grad student working in the Technology department of my school, I get paid more than what an average professor of more than 30 years of experience will get in Nigeria. So, how would I come down and start competing for the same peanuts with those cruel lecturers (local champions) who see themselves as kings and terrors in the classroom? Here in the U.S, my professors address us as "sir" and "ma'am". When in office, they keep their doors widely open except when the weather is cold. But in Naija, lecturers/professors offices are not only closed. They are always locked (probably because they always have babes inside). And when the babe manages to open the door for you, the stern look on the the lecturers face will make you forget why you came initially. I never forget all these memories, and I feel like coursing out all those rude lecturers/professors in Nigeria, each time I see the way professors respect students here. It's just something different. So my brother even if I return (which I don't even think of doing except visiting), I am not coming to work with those kind of sadists. I will rather set myself up, and run a business of my own.

Note: I am not trying to paint the U.S as the best solution to everything (the discrimination or whatever). My experience in the U.S just happens to be on the good sides. Others have their stories which might be horrible. So, the best thing is either you have HND or Bsc or even Phd in Nigeria, it still doesn't guarantee you anything good in the Nigeria I know. Just keep trying, and I hope one day you will smile cheesy cheesy. Im out! wink
man, I feel you. Its everywhere and most of them stupidly carry this attitude with them even to developed countries. A month ago, a man stated here that he terminated his contract with a whole cleaning company just because of the rude manner of a Nigerian woman displayed in London. And she didn't realized that it was the owner of the hospital standing by because the man looked like a patient and was just recuperating from a surgery he just undergone in his hospital. The owner of the hospital is a member of this forum.

Last week, I met with a lecturer to submit my project work for review and he angrily asked me to get out of his presence for a crime I didn't commit. I left him but still greeted him the next day I saw him. I have given my file to his superior.

Yet , these same people will blame top leaders but not realizing that they too are leaders.

nijanigga: You must be very hungry, what's 200,000k is going to do for you? less than $1500 USD. While senators and jona, ministers are sharing millions of dollars in seconds.
Nigerian youths are sell out and no hope in our youths. Our youths can't challenge the status-quo,they are always happy with crumbs.
Bros... Not bragging or having my head in the clouds. With N200,000, I will make millions right here in Naija.

Its all about financial intelligence. You need to work on yourself and develop it beyond the job-seeking mentality because one day you will either retire, resign or get fired. On these will happen but what will you be leaving off when it happens?
NYSCRe: Ex corpers now in the real world. Welcome guys. Whats next? by 2sexy(m): 8:58am On Jun 15, 2012
Thinking is nothing to me. I can be very creative sometimes.

For instance, I have chosen website design as my number one source of income. But guess what? I tweaked the idea and I will be making money than most webdesigners.
How? I will do what most aren't doing. And what's that?
Some people place ads on newspaper for webdesign business and hoping that someone contact them. I will be setting up website free and earn as much $125 per person indirectly. You won't understand because you are not into such business nor have you heard of anything like that. And the website won't take me more than an hour to set up plus I can set up 20 off such sites in a month(practise makes perfect... I don do am).

Now, whom will you want to design your website for you, paid or free? I believe you will choose the free option because people love free things. Again, there is website where people list their product but most do not have a website and there over 5000 businesses listed on there. Imagine how much I will be making if I contact these owners and offer to set up their website free of cost.

The most surprising thing is that there are also people advertising for webdesign business on there who hope that someone will contact them but its obvious that I will make money than them with my approach. All I will do is call them on phone and offer them my service instead of waiting by placing adverts with the hope that someone comes in.

Proactiveness wins any day.

aktunde: There may be, but I am not sure of any school that offers PGD in the U.S. Most offers Masters direct. So, you can easily escape the PGD thing, and go straight for Masters. Some U.S schools have agencies that convert foreign degrees to that of U.S standard. When my HND was converted by World Education Services (WES), it was an equivalent as a Bachelors in the U.S. So, as far as the school is concerned, I have a Bsc (after the conversion), and they accepted me for Masters. Depending on your undergraduate degree, you may be asked to take some prerequisite courses. But if your HND is directly related to your Masters, you can start the Masters direct. Most US schools look beyond your certificate. They consider your entrance scores (GRE,GMAT,TOEFL) and your statement of purpose. If you impress them with your write up, with a good test score and GPA, you are good to go! Since you said you did Petroleum engineering, I will advise you look for schools in Texas. you can research schools at www.univsource.com . Search by state, and look for schools in schools Texas. On a final note. Do not pay anyone to help you get admission in the US or to get visa. If you take your time to read, you can do it all by yourself. I did not pay agent one kobo to get here. I did it all by myself, and I got my US visa at first appearance on a virgin passport. This tells you how smart HND students can be wink If you need more information about studying in the US, I encourage you to check the travel section of nairaland, and read threads about studying in the U.S. That place is very helpful, and I consider it as the best section on nairaland.
Thanks... From the way you talk it seem you graduated with a distinction. But I will be leaving with an upper credit so what are my chances of being taken when my CGPA is converted to the US standard?

I know the travel section but often visit the Canada thread. I only recently chose US due to the job prospect after following the advice of a fellow member(2good) in another thread.

What about the issue of financing, your tution fees, accommodation etc how did you scale the hurdle? Did you get a grant or scholarship? I know its very expensive to school in US when compared to Canada and as such I wasn't born with a silver spoon but I believe I can do it.
Kindly fill me in.
Thanks.

kilokeys: My guy . I like u anyway.. It takes one idea, just one to explode..
Some places for lag too dirty jare. If the houses are clean, drainages are clean, rats go run enter bush.
Lol.. The rat idea is nt a so-good idea sha. Rats are mammals.. They r a neccesary evil sometimes. Seed dispersion, land burrowing e.t.c.
wldnt d chemical affect other rat-like animals like the grasscutter, squirrel and so on?. Even humans might nt be so safe. Seepage of chemicals into groundwater.
Eradication of a specie, any specie wld disrupt d ecosystem of that area.. What wld snakes eat when all rats are gone? Rats are easy meals for bigger predators.
My guy.. We shall get there.. Let the ideas roll in.. One wld be good enough. I am so sure
.

I said eco-friendly chemical formular. Yes you are right but at least it would reduce their population drastically. I'm just saying a good thinking would yield good result, but for some people, thinking is hardwork.
NYSCRe: Ex corpers now in the real world. Welcome guys. Whats next? by 2sexy(m):
When I said people should look for opportunity by looking for problems to solve; problems begging for a solution.

Has anyone ever thought about the invasion of rats, especially in a place like Lagos? I believe they have the largest population of rats on there. What have people done to solve this problem over the year? Solution came in form of rat gum, trap , and poison but has these been very effective over the years? Not entirely I guess.

What if someone come up with a eco-friendly chemical formular that could make rats infertile, can you see the possibilities? Someone can even go further to patner with the state governments and make boat loads of cash.

Now you do not have to be a chemical or lab engineer or wizards to get this done. You may wish to patner with someone in the field and share the profit 50-50 or pay him off by buying the entire right to the formular.

That's how Cocacola and my Microsoft came into existence--the bought the formular!

That's just one.

Has anyone thought of creating professionally packaged educative videos that could teach kids in secondary schools physics, chemistry, biology, economics , mathematics etc? But all in a very easy to understand terms , such that kids will find it easy to comprehend in a long time and parents will appreciate. All you have to do is do it better than it is taught at school, make it friendly, throw in some stories and with fluent english.

These are million naira ideas I have shared with you and any serious minded person would take advantage of this. There are more of ideas like this which I have in my head. My room-mate at school laughed at me when I said I will pay 50k to attend a conference at Abuja come next year. He probably judge me by my present status but what he hasn't realized is that some people are 'walking' ATM and they don't need more money in their wallet neither are they bothered if they lost everything.

IDEA+PROBLEM=SOLUTION + MONEY

aktunde: Thanks my brother. You are talking about me here. And this is why my heart never stops bleeding for the youths of Nigeria. Especially those who couldn't find an escape route from such discrimination. Graduated with HND and served in 2006, I faced this discrimination as a job applicant. Universities in Nigeria will also not allow me to go straight for Masters despite my good strong GPA. I tried the PGD route to Masters. I was also frustrated by those seeking bribes which I could neither afford nor give at that time. Button line, I couldn't get a job with the HND, and I couldn't proceed educationally when I wanted to. I got stuck!! I applied for Masters with the same GPA, performed well in the entrance exams and I got admitted into for a Masters program in U.S. My country is too blind to see the potentials in me, but the smart country can see it and accepted me. They gave me all the opportunities, and right now, I am preparing for my Phd. After my Phd, I will rather remain here and show gratitude to the country which sees the potential in me, and gives me all the opportunity than rushing back to a country which almost ruined my potentials. Call it brain drain if you like, I don't care because Nigeria doesn't care about us (the HND Grads, other unemployed grads & the educated hustlers). And to you HND holders, don't let them hold you down. Struggle till you get to the top because they don't care about you. Your destiny is in your hands
Bros. I am currently doing my HND and wouldn't mind if you feed me with info about schools where I can do a Postgraduate Diploma in US as a petroleum engineering graduate. Please send me an email through the email in my signature and I'll be more than glad if you help me.

Or na teeth i go attach to the 3 point linkage or na ur wretched fingers i go put for d P.T.O shaft to work on d land? Besides, where in ogun state can u rent an acre (12plots) for 2,500 naira? Ignorant retard. If u r a petty farmer working with hoes. I am nt. I wldnt want to start that way. Besides, look at the big picture of what i want. An acre with basic farm structures, like accomodation/farm shed, for housing, security and tools, and for tractors and attachments, store for grains and fertilizers. I wld need to carry out land clearing and survey operations, wld need a water source for irrigation. Probably a borehole with tank, pumping machine incorporated with a drip-irrigation system over the 12 plots, pay my workers. U cant start meaningful farming in a small way. Na garden?
I am an agricultural engineer, who are you?
All this one na story. If you are really serious, yyou will get started anyhow. I read about a man today in punch newspaper who currently has 103 people in his employ. How did he start? Anyhow! He quite his job with an engineering firm and went out to learn soap making and he started making soap to sell.

He faced a lot of challenges but persisted till he got married and relocated to Abuja. At Abuja,he and his wife started as food vendor but today he is the owner of a real estate firm.

You seem to have a big dream but not wanting to start small. O boy you go grow white beards.

Role up your sleeve and get to work. Think big but start small. Never dispise your days of little beginning.

For instance, i read agricultural engineering. There is little one can do on his/her own. Wld i buy an acre land for 10m to plant maize?, buy a tractor of 45m?, when wld i recover my capital?.. These are the Government's responsibilities. most of the personal biz or runz or self employed stuff pple are talking abt profits little or nothing. can u run a home with its profits? Start a family?.
nigerians are just over-motivated jare... More than 5,000 biz names are registered with CAC every week. Everybody na General contractor, everybody dey into clearing and forwarding, branding, cleaning services and so on.. How does this help the country, or u ? Besides cash to feed urself, flex a lil. our Government needs to wake up jare. We are a consuming nation. Busy with paperworks. God help us
Man, you may be right but not entirely. I tell you there is still untapped niches which you can break into and make more money for yourself. All you have to do is educate yourself more on business opportunities around you. As I type this, there are people who are involved in export of Nigeria's commodity and there are companies overseas that buy form them. You may decide to become a middle man and earn commission. You can connect the buyer and seller together and receive commission on both sides. I read about a guy called kenneth obi who earned thirty thousand dollars doing this from Nigeria. The guy has been doing this for over 6 years , so you may not have the same experience as him, but with a little research and persistence, you will get there.
e
What the said kenneth did was to find a buyer of sesame seed online and the man needed 30 containers of sesame seed. kenneth had to ask the Romanian that he would be paid one thousand dollars per container and the man agreed. Kenneth sourced for sellers of the seed, the man came to Nigeria and that was how they did business. he found the guy at www.alibaba.com at the forum on there.

If I wanted to do mine, I will simply help people design their website and help take their businesses online and of course, webdesign is not enough. If you have a skill and you do not have the marketing tools in place, then you are as good as dead. The basic principle of money is find a need and fill it, but with more value added to it than its widely available and you will always smile to the bank.

As I type now, there are over 3 systems and blueprint which I have built for myself that is guaranteed to make me good money when I am done with school work.

There are many more that I could share with people but that may be when I am at my NYSC camp.

So guys, find a need and fill it. Find a starving crowd and feed it. Find a problem and solve it. let you thinking do the work and take action.

Many Nigerian do not read books written by American because some think that whatever is written in such books may not work in Nigeria. Let me tell you, the owner of complete sport came from a poor family but he is a millionaire today just by reading books written by Americans. The first book that changed him waas Think and Grow Rich.

I on my part first got the a first touch of business/investor mind set after reading Rich Dad, Poor Dad, by Robert Kiyosaki. There after I read Rich Dad's Guide to Investment. The latter alone revealed how businesses think and act that is why most advert dont work on me any more. Adverts make people poor and investors richer. You wont understand what I mean till you read that book.

Read, develop your mentality, Take action and you will never be afraid of Nigeria's economy.

Improving your financial intelligence is all you need to do... and you will be invisible!

T22, you have it there. I too will be joining soon but frankly speaking, I am not in any way scared. The reason is that in the last four years, I have developed my entrepreneurial skill. I have skills that people will pay me for. It is very sad that Nigerians are yet to realize it that being in business is the right thing to do, pending when you get a job.

nitrogen: @2sexy, you are right, but the starter(op) is thinking and trying to present himself like a prof. motivator.
Not really, from what I see. He actually thought he had no problem or refuse to see it so. A lot of adults don't know how to spell correctly.

I know a guy that even at his age, he still make basic mistakes in spelling, no thanks to the way he was brought up. His dad used to call me back then to spell certain words amongst his other brothers and when I did spell it correctly, he would commend me for it while this guys would be upset. It got so bad that they almost banned me from coming to their house. Over 20 year down the road one of them can't spell correctly. Why? Because he refused to develop himself when his father was hammering it on him. Infact he and I even talked about it early this year while he said about his basic spelling errors(my mind quickly flash back to years back when his father asked me to spell) and he asked me how he could overcome it and I told him that he refused to tackle the problem that's why its still there. And he agreed.

Well, on my part, most people do not know what I did. I am a believer of self-development. I don't believe the teacher can teach you anything without your effort. What that guy didn't know is that I self-taught myself how to read. Its unbelieveable but its the truth. I grew up in a house where no one care to teach me after school but I had to copy a friend whose mother took the responsibility of doing so. I taught myself mathematics when I realized I was deficient in that area. One thing about me is that it seems God installed auto-learning application in me. I have this tendency to learn from people things that are good and that's why I told the OP to do the same.

As a matter of fact, I once had F9 in english. So, basically if I can improve, anyone can!

This ain't a good way to help someone. You guys should commended him for taking a bold step for knowing what to do with his life and time. As you can clearly see, he is just starting out. How many people in Nigeria know what to do? How many of you here got it right the first you started something?

After that, you should then point out his errors and tell him how to correct the errors and also imrove himself to be a better writer, communicator and orator.

There are a lot educated-illitrates among us here on nairaland. All those laughing at the OP for words spelt wrong, your intention is right but with a bad approach. We should learn to give hope and encouragement at the slightest opportunity. Nigeria is a mess already. Don't make it worse by sending one to street.

Its not by knowing how to spell almost every word in the dictionary when you could hardly make an impact in the life of your fellow human.

OP, you can do it. All you got to do is watch what others have done and copy them. You do have to improve your spelling but it ain't that hard if you love to read. Just keep reading and before you know it, you could spell better. Watch and copy what others have done is only way to improve and don't let anyone fool you; you a great motivator. Yes you can!

CareerHow Do I Develop Myself Career-wise? by 2sexy(op): 12:17pm On Jun 04, 2012
Hello, folks.

Its no news that most people leave school, go for NYSC but know little about how to develop themselves to boost their CV and job prospecting. However, I believe this thread will help a lot of people if given front page exposure or the lunching pad to off.

I will use myself as an example.

In less than 2months time, I will be graduating and leaving with HND Cert. as a petroleum engineering student and hopefully, I will serve my country as a youth coper.

Apart from having HND cert, how do I develop myself career-wise so as to boost my job prospecting? Whatelse can I add to my CV?

I have heard people talk about short courses/ certificate but I honestly do not know which one to acquire that may be relevant to my field of study. Recently, I found out that software are used during drilling operation, completion, production operation and I will like to know the names and what the are used for.

I still feel that there's room for improvement and I don't want to leave any stone un-turned.

For instance, I studied mineral resources at OND level, though I chose petroleum engineering( you how they do it in Naija). At HND, I am studying petroleum engineering and most times, lecturer often assume that we all studied petroleum engineering at OND and this further makes it difficult to comprehend certain things. My grades meets the basic requirement for employment, but I still feel incomplete when compared to my colleagues who studied petroleum engineering at OND level. I will appreciate anyone that could assist me with audio visuals, ebooks, software which I can use to build or develop myself from ground up.

Thank you for your time.
