If your computer is connected to the network and server. the problem might not be the computer its self, i should have asked if you are using domain account or local account to log in. if you are using domain account and you have loads of files on that account, Logging on and off is going to be slow as it is copying to the server and back when you logging off and on. you could try swapping the cable( if you use one). you can just try and rule that out that its not the cable.

I suspect you might be using domain account since you use server 2008. they all use roaming profile.

If you are the only one using the computer and no one else, why dont you just lock it instead of logging off?

Yeah i did check again, it actually uses a roaming profile and i indeed use a domain account. you are right.

i did wonder if the backups were the cause bt i asked the chap who set it up and he ruled it out, gave some lengthy gibberis explanation. anyway like i said i only use it for word processing and the files on it cannot be more than 20MB. i guess its a straight shoot between the Norton and the server.

They are actually selling a Phone and a dedicated Device. it does not use gprs as far as i know but the same DVBT tech in the decoder.
