In the same way I do not understand the hate for dstv.
I do not know if it is real, or if it is some Internet trolling.

Dstv is a monopoly that has consistently improved its service over the years. The channel bouquets have increased, cost of decoders has gone down, options for renewing subscriptions are myriad. Your average Nigerian run monopoly is content to degrade from first experience, confident that subscribers have nowhere to go.

Maybe Nigerians are the problem, we rather want a cheap, chaotic and unreliable service over an expensive reliable one.

Like you, I don't watch dstv, though the missus does. I download all my stuff which I still do not have time to watch.
Funny thing is I checked their site and the Information about the decoders is completely different from what people have been saying. The hard drive support is external. Not inbuilt.

Somehow the legend circulating is that the decoder comes with inbuilt 500gb drives. That's not what the official write up says. Obviously this is going to be a case of 'they lied'

Also not the use of the phrase 'our smart STB' can make video call.

I think that's a pointer to the fact that they'll have more than 1 model decoder

Last week Friday, I called three different dealers listed on their website. Their launch day was October 1.no one had any in stock, and they were not expected for at least a week.

A lot of people said wait for them to launch. End of a week and nothing.

Not promising.

I have worked as a project manager, and you do not launch until everything is in place. Licences, equipment, sales infrastructure, etc is in place. These guys were more obsessed with a meaningless political statement than actually rolling out their service.

You are a techie. How many of their claims are economically feasible?

Theres some stuff about 500gb storage. 500gb in a 5k box?
Yes they are overselling of course.
And very disorganized. Its obvious they are new to the business and lack coordination.
I also made calls and its obvious it'll take at least a month or more to get their commercial line going for sales. They kuku just started test transmission. If they sold decoder to you October 1, what would you have used it for when they hadn't started broadcast?

And I think the 500gb is actually 50gb or zero but can support external 500gb drives. Marketing semantics.

If you are observant you'd notice most of their publicity stuff isn't professional or techy as it should be.

And a lot of what is being circulated is actually not from their official communication and deniable.

For instance there's about 5 fake TSTV handles on twitter posting these stuff and people are following and retweeting citing those as official.

And their online marketing bots are plain silly, ignorant and telling a lot of lies.

But that doesn't change the fact that most of these complaints and comments are from a position of ignorance. We don't know anything for a fact, but so much complaints from assumptions.
And that simply doesn't make any sense.

Why not wait to see it in person first before passing judgement?

Because it sounds too cheap doesn't mean it isn't real. How else do you want to create a subscriber base in a market with no margins if not by enticing them with low prices then increasing it later?

Because of course those prices will double in a year, guaranteed.

The laughable one is this 'scam' angle.

Has anyone paid for a months service and not gotten it? Or are we saying that if we buy decoder 5k they must be in business forever?

Did HiTV scam anyone by folding up?

Funniest part is, there's nothing actually unique about what TSTV is bringing in the sense that you can get almost all of those stations as Free to Air with 2 90cm dish.

Matter of fact, in my view the only thing they are bringing to the table is a android decoder that has satellite tuner, and data. And thats why I'm interested, not their so called channels. I haven't had DStv in a long while and I watch ALL the football I want.

The lack of knowledge and ignorance on these TSTV issue is just funny. And its these ones dedicated to rubbishing it that I find weird. Almost like they are being paid to shoot it down. Has anyone announced its compulsory?

The free publicity they've had from people like this over what is more or less broadcasting FTA commercially is remarkable

TSTV MAY BE A FRAUD.
I promoted Tstv and was hoping that it could challenge DStv. It was launched in Abuja few days ago.
Read this:

Is TSTV A Fraud?

Another MMM Scam. Everybody beware.

These TSTV guys are actually reckless. I am really surprised that they brought the minister into this.
I believe that this is another MMM. Buyers beware. This is based on the following:
1. Bein sports acquired the EPL, Champions League and Laliga only for MENA (Middle East and North Africa). They do not have the right for Nigeria. DSTV owns the rights for Nigeria till 2019. You cannot give what you do not have. When a new service is launched, you have to wait for the next bidding round to have a shot at acquiring the rights. You cannot jump in the middle and start showing it. Things are not done that way in the PayTV world.
err, ok.

Please post a copy of the 'rights agreement'. or are you saying this based on what you have heard people say or think DStv announce?

have you fact - checked this claim? if so, how?

Do you also know how the rights issue work? Please point us to information

because for instance, Canal+ shows EPL in french speaking countries in Sub-saharan Africa. BeIN also shows in Arabic speaking countries in Africa.

install Live Soccer TV app on android and check TV listings for premier league matches, or go to liveonsat dot com and check tv listings

is is possible they intend to broadcast it in those languages ?

neyop85:
2.
A lot of channels listed like CNN, National Geographic, Discovery etc were acquired by DSTV on an exclusive basis for DTH in sub-saharan Africa by DSTV. Channels like Star Movies, MBC2, etc are only cleared for middle east and Asia. I really doubt that they have the rights to those channels. They may show it for one or two months before they are asked to take them off air.
Lol.

MBC is available for FREE on Eutelsat w3a 7.0E, 26E and Nilesat 7W.

Ask on the FTA section

CNN is available on those, and also on Kwese package on Eutelsat 7B, SES 4 Africa, and even BADR 5 for MENA which many FTA users track and use in Nigeria and Africa

Discovery, Nat Geo, Star Movies etc are available on Zuku Package. a tanzanian sat tv provider. see here: http://www.zuku.co.ke/entertainment/channels

Where is this exclusive rights that DStv has and why have they not been writing these people to challenge and enforce it?

Ordinary Metrodigital and CTL that they can shut down in 1 hr are showing these things, but you people are so sure about the rights agreement of DStv

Most Sat TV agreements are confidential because the pricing is always selective. so i'm not sure how the details of DSTV's agreements are public knowledge in Nigeria that you all claim to know, yet no proof.

neyop85:
3.
I check with a content aggregator on the cost per subscriber for these channels, assuming they can buy the rights, it came out the about 23 USD per month. That is excluding the sports channels. Based on today's naira exchange rate of 365 naira to a dollar, the cost is 8,395 Naira per subscriber. The content owners globally charge per month for their content. They do not charge per week or part of the month. The content owners dictate the terms. Nobody can pay 8395 Naira and charge 3000 Naira. Not possible.
Which 'content aggregator' is that? we need to start bringing verifiable proof for these things.

Give us a link to these prices.

why do you believe you need an aggregator when there are direct satellite feeds for you to connect and link up the stations?

You don't sound like you know much about satellite TV. What do you think those >5 Meter dishes scattered around their offices are for?

which aggregator does Champion TV Ghana or even DSTV use for example?

neyop85:
4.
The cost of decoder package is as follows - decoder 25 USD, smartcard 4 USD, dish is 5 USD. Total is 34 USD (12410 naira). If we add shipping and clearing, you can get 15,000 Naira. To charge 5000 Naira for the package, you will need a lot of cheap money from bank to fund the decoder purchase. Buying 15,000 and selling 5000 sounds interesting to me.
How did you assume that the decoder you checked is the one they intend to use?

why do you assume that it will use a smart card.

This is an example of a decoder that works like what TSTV propose, incidentally its also called TSTV in China.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oc88Z8RR6gg

as you can see, there is no sign of a smart card interface and it rather uses a online login number/pin system.

IT IS NOT WHAT TSTVAFRICA want to use, as far as i know, but im showing you so that you can see that its not only smartcard technology that is possible

Secondly, did you check Alibaba for wholesale prices of decoders from China? I'm sure you did not. if you did you will see hybrid decoders wholesale price for about $20 and anyone who goes to shenzhen for products will tell you that depending on your order size you will get even lower prices than on Alibaba online.

see this link: https://www.alibaba.com/showroom/android-iptv-decoder.html

Do you know that latest strong decoders retail for around 10k? single unit, after import, shipping, profit added about 5 times by each person it passed through. how much do you think it would cost from the factory that makes them directly in bulk?

neyop85:
5.
To do internet via satellite, you need VSAT equipment which is expensive compared to the dish/lnb you need to receive dstv. Minimum cost of vsat equipment should be not less than 50,000 Naira. If you use the traditional dish equipment, you can only receive. You cannot do internet with it. Unless TSTV will supply you 40,000 Naira vsat equipment for 5000 Naira.
Appears you are not aware that DStv used to offer this internet service here in Nigeria before they moved to 36B for better footprint and signal in Nigeria.

Its the modem thats the sole difference from any other setup.

The modem in a Samsung Flagship thats less than 2inch in size is far better than the modems of 10 years ago. so why do you assume the decoder does not have a modem capable of this?

funny thing is the images being circulated that the decoder looks like looks more like a router/modem than a decoder sef

neyop85:
6.
I went to lyngsat and checked the ABS 3A satellite, I did not see any information about any TSTV channels. Lyngsat is the database of all channels currently on satellite.
This is true.

But lyngsat is not automatic. it requires the satellite feed providers to submit their offerings to it for listing. Considering they haven't started broadcasting, and appear to be very disorganized and unprepared it is understandable why

neyop85:
7.
When you launch a new DTH platform, you start with a test transmission. This allows you to work through some issues that might come up. It also gives people chance to see some of your channels to make sure they are real before committing their money. There is no test transmission from TSTV.
And when did they make this rule?

again, they haven't started broadcasting so........

meanwhile, i assume you have tracked AB3 W and not found a feed active?

neyop85:
In conclusion, people should ask enough questions before investing their hard earned money. If it is too good to be true, it's probably is. Let this not be another MMM". Pls look before you leap.

Cc: lalasticlala
This is the part i don't get.

Have you given them a dime? have you paid for a month's broadcast without getting anything in return?

so how is it a scam?

and going by your definition of a scam, it would then mean that HiTV and Daarsat amongst many others were scams?

It goes without saying that satellite TV is not a necessity, neither is there compulsion.

thankfully theres PLENTY of choices apart from the scam, so why not calm down and let people decide.

ironically you used MMM as example. but i'm sure you remember that it was also a matter of choice, and participants went for it on their own.

Will they illegally stream Bein sports as well? Because from the letter Bein sports does not know them.

I dont think because something can be streamed means no lines are being crossed. Youtube does take down streaming of some live contents and even hosting of some other contents on their website.
Well, thing about streaming is you have to know who to go after especially If they dont run the servers.

I've been streaming football exclusively for 2 years now, it's a different world compared with YouTube. YouTube is a content aggregator. You are posting your video on YouTube servers. They have control.

When the server is not yours, it's more difficult. Even UK that they started clamping down on kodi boxes and livestreaming through ISPs, folks simply use a VPN and life continues.

Anyways, I still want to know how all these infringement thing doesn't affect CTL

Meanwhile, why is the market responding instead of calling their lawyers to sue TSTV?

Adding stations and more football content to Gotv, even hearing speculation of DStv price promos.

Why is that the response?

I think it's better to just chill and watch events unfold rather than jump to all these conclusions.

At least these guys managed to get connection to the govt of the day. And we all know 'leg' is 90% of Nigerian Business
TV/MoviesRe: TSTV In Trouble? by 4llerbuntu(m):

Interesting.

So why are all these stations being shown by CTL in the east for about 3.5k?

Is there no other satellite provider in the entire Africa showing CNN? Hope you know its actually available as Free To Air on some satellites in Africa?

I doubt if paying for CNN gives them the right to use it for Gotv too

This sub Saharan Africa rights thing is a fable. There's something about that story that doesn't add up.

Canal+ shows the premier league in many countries in Sub Saharan Africa. BeIN sports too. Check TV listings for any coming premier league match...

Install Live Soccer TV app, it has listings for stations showing football. Sudan, Chad, Djibouti and some more watch BeIN sports.

I think we often conflate the fact that many of these countries don't have satellite TV providers at all, and Dstv is likely the only provider there to mean its only DStv that has rights.

Ive read somewhere once that the rights is for English speaking broadcast and others can broadcast in other languages. Thing is, its hard to sell French broadcasts in an English speaking country....

If I'm not mistaken sef, the last time they sold rights it was country by country and not whole Africa

Moreover, nothing stops a provider that has rights from sublicensing.

Thats all I want to know. I am not challenging your lengthy write up even though Im not inclined to fact check but some things no add up na

PS: LYNGSAT is not omnipotent. Its people who list SATs there and many times you will find old info or no info for what's there. For instance least time I checked Daarsat was still listed and we ask know it died.

Some one posted it on FTA thread that test transmission started with 7 stations about a week ago. I just wasn't inclined to move my dish yet. I don't think those that said it was transmitting had cause to lie. But sha na Nigeria we dey.

They have a big office and equipment in Abuja. They haven't collected a dime from anyone. It will be very weird that they'd do all that, get govt rebates, launching etc for nothing.

What if the entire football thing is streaming? Does DStv own streaming rights too?
