highmey: Hmmm...

From my observations so far, most people are in religion (especially xtians and Muslims) cos:
1. They were born into the religion.
2. They are scared of been sent to hell.
3. They have no idea of what awaits them after death.

I'm very sure, if men lives for ever, no one will be religious.

Following this thread, it's so educative! smiley
Good observation!
May I also add one more point although minor...

4. They truly love God for who he is and what He stands for.

These group worship God out of appreciation and not fear. They don't pray to ask God for what he can do for them, rather they pray to thank Him for what he has already done. This group does not love God on condition that he does or does not do something, they love Him unconditionally whether they suffer for it or not.

However they are in the gross minority especially in a country like ours. Then again its not surprising. Even the Bible says that 'wide is the way that leads to destruction.' Being a true christian has always been difficult and challenging. Ask the apostles and early disciples.

CLUELESS APOLOGIST

Go, tell your deity that you've failed.
As usual, when you guys have nothing intelligent to say you resort to insults and emotional provocation to dissuade further discussion smiley. If you were an older member of nairaland you would have realised I started my habitation in nairaland on the "religious section" until most of the intelligent atheists left. What remains now apart from a few intellectuals are people like you.SMH at atheism.

You claim you are not an atheist but your posts indicate otherwise.

Failed in what? I have nothing to lose. It is you who has no proper belief system, you who are governed by the physical and nothing more, you who subscribe to the limited halls of man's knowledge. You who live your life rudderless, without an anchor, being swept by whichever wind blows in this vast ocean of the unknown we call existence.

It is you who has failed.

Martian: No I'm not troubled because it's not "all mythology" that have the mud aspect. If you look at Art, the earliest forms we have evidence for are either drawings or molded sculptures. So we can deduce that people in different cultures gave their ability to create molded sculptures to the deities they created. Hence, god made people out of mud just like people made things out of mud.
Wait, what? This your analogy makes no sense. Why didnt they just say people came out of the water or a great beast birthed them? Why the mud and the breathing of life?

What truth was well known? Besides, not all cultures have mud people stories.
http://www.gly.uga.edu/railsback/CS/CSIndex.html
So I clicked your link and looked through some but not all of the topics at random as there were too many. Earth, mud, land, rock, they all point to the same thing. Can't you see the similarity? Why didn't someone make man from water? Or air? There is a similarity in the creation story concerning man, (not the gods) no matter how bizzaire other parts of the story gets. Unless you deliberately don't want to see it.

What is "God Almighty"? Does it have the same characteristics as The Great Leprechaun?
And what do you know is "The Great Leprechaun?" If such a thing existed wouldn't it have beenemtioned in man's history? Can't you see such examples are given by atheist bodies to ridicule the idea of a supernatural being solely and so shouldn't be taken seriously?

Well, this "Almighty" guy can get on Youtube, Faceboook, Twitter, Instagram, CNN, FOX News. Al Jazeera, CCCN, C-SPAN, NTA, AIT, MSNBC, ESPN,,...............................MySpace. etc and make himself known.
And then what? You'll come on your knees to worship him if he does that? I doubt it. You'll probably go on about how its a hoax and how the Americans have devised a means to brainwash the masses. Besides God tried numerous times in the past to communicate directly with man, man simply goes 'wow' and then forgets after some time.

All religion, although diverse, have a common similarity. There is a God. That God may have demigods under him or send out emmissaires or have a Son but it still remains that there is a God. The last major spiritual upheaval is God sending his Son to die so that you can inherit eternal life in heaven. You don't need to do anything extra special like the Jews or Buddhists or Pagans. No need for any special atonement. Just believe in the salvation of God's son and be saved. So simple. Yet so difficult to follow for so many. Personally I think God has tried and if He has decided to leave us to rot in our ways I won't blame Him one bit. The bible actually warns that days like these will come when there will be a loss of faith on earth and people will be full of themselves, beat their chests and say 'there is no god.' and that the faithful should beware of those days.

I don't intend to preach or convert you to the Christian faith. I think most atheists on this forum are not angry at God per se, how can they be angry at someone they don't believe even exists smiley. I think they are angry at the behaviour of Christians they have come across at one point or the other in their lives, or because they prayed for something and didn't get it. Is that disappointment really enough to risk your soul for?

In your search for truth through science, remember to keep an eye out for things that science cannot explain. Try not to build on science so much as it tends to shift like the wind with new evidence. Be mad at Christians and pentecostal zealots with their fire and brimstone judgmental, holier-than-thou attitude but give God himself a chance by keeping your mind open to possibilities.

I know what monotheism means. Did it make you feel big to define it for me? smiley

But, you've got to go inside your house and analyse how these gods are one and the same. One, originated life at ile-ife, another in the garden of eden and later had a son,
Once again, unnecessary coarse words. But I understand. You need it to feed your ego. I'll bypass it.

I was talking about the creation story only. A similarity in the creation story shows a similarity in origins. That's what I was trying to point out.
Where is the garden of eden? Does anybody know exactly? Could 'garden of eden' have a different meaning e.g 'point of origin'? Can you conclusively disprove that ile-ife is the garden of eden? Or is it possible that this 'garden' was taken up after the fall of man?

Stop derailing the thread, thought the OP invited atheists.

cococandy: I could take a whole day but not do justice to this question.

*You do know that first and foremost, the mindset and opinion is that women are beneath men. That alone is something the needs to be corrected.
Whose mindset? Yours? huh
*
Legally?. Is there a law that protects women from abusive men? If there is,it only comes into play when the woman is dead or raped.
Other instances of assualt are dismissed as family matter.
Yes there is a law! If your husband punches you in the face you report to the police, I am fully aware of this!
Who dismisses it as family matter? When we wanted to arrest a man for battering his wife she and her mother were the one who refused, saying it was a family matter. On further discussion the woman admitted that she was the one who baited her husband. Should the police now arrest him without her pressing charges?

*
Legally? An African country just passed a law that permits men to take other wives if they wish without their wives' consents. That's not legal oppression?
True, but hasn't polygamy been here all along? Did the said country's wives stage a protest against that law? In fact I could be wrong but I heard the people spearheading the opposition are other males. The extra wives to be married are they not women? Why would you marry a man who you know already has a wife if you don't support it?

*
Most guys will tell you they don't want a woman at the pinacle of her career because she must have been thru' hell to get there. Why do they say so? Because they know the nigerian society is one that requires you to work your way up to the top of the ladder on your back with your legs spread. Not because you aren't qualified but because you can be made to forfeit whatever it is you pursue so badly.
Is anything being done about this?
No. The guys cover the others up and intimate assults keeps on increasing. There's hardly any woman who's made it to the top that didn't get there by hiding behind a powerful man to protect her against the predators.
This is a worldwide phenomenon. I agree its more difficult for a female to rise than a male due to sexual pressures. However I also know females who have risen to the pinnacle of their careers without opening their legs. I won't swear to it though. Then again is it possible some of these ladies open their legs before being asked in a bid to skyrocket to the top?

*
You know females can't inherit property in some parts of our dear country?

*some females aren't allowed education and their own choices in the upper part of Nigeria. But I guess it's ok because their religion permits it.
Not so?
If you read my previous post you will see where i mentioned some parts of the country. Those parts that keep dragging us back socially, medically, politically and other wise. But this is the wrong thread for it .

As for the inheritance stuff it'd part of our culture. It is so because in the past the woman was expected to return to her village if anything happened to the man. It may not be viewed as fair in this day and age but I'm sure you are aware there are legal recourses taken to back up the woman to get the inheritance.

I don't want it to look like I'm negating all your views. Remembee i said i used to like what feminism stood for before but not anymore. I'm just saying the feminism thing has stopped being music and has turned to noise.
Family › Re: false reasons why some people believe feminists hate men by 5minsmadness:
EnlightenedSoul: It was absolutely and terribly wrong for the guy to be forced into sex. That is called rape/ sexual assault! But when you say "imagine if it was female", I'm not moved. She would most assuredly be asked about what she was wearing, criticized for allowing herself to be raaped, offered a "poor thing" or a useless prayer. The rape_ of women is run of the mill thing so much so that it only conjures at best mild sympathy on here, and no real outrage.

Also, I'm not in support of what Solange did. I do not condone physical violence of any kind. He could've and should've pressed charges, but he didn't for whatever reason. Similar to the above, you do realize that violence against women is also far more commonplace, and also conjures mild sympathy, and oftentimes blames the woman for being hit! Maybe we should blame Jay Z also. Maybe he had it coming? Smh

I don't say women do not commit crimes, but what kind of crimes and why? Don't deceive yourself. Notice the glaring difference in what these crimes are, the scale, and who they're committed against. These disgusting stories are so commonplace, it's no longer shocking.

Saying you stand for femininity is like me saying I stand for masculinity lol. That's a given! It has nothing to do with the topic at hand.
These examples you gave are outdated. Who still blames a woman for getting raaaped for goodness sake? More like all the woman has to do is scream 'rape!' even if all the guy did was touch her arm and he will be imprisoned first before people will hear his side of the story. Where I worked some years ago in cases where we hear of rape the man has already been beaten from the house before being dragged to our office or the police station.

As for the second bolded, violence against women may be far more commonplace for various reasons including :

1. They are the 'weaker' sex. The tendency to get beaten is higher when you are weaker, whether male or female. Its not right, it just happens that wat.
2. Men don't complain as much as women. Open a thread for women who are beaten by their husbands, it will reach page three before you search Google. Open a thread, even an anonymous one on men who get bashed by their wives and it will be as quiet as a bus after someone has farted in it. Men are not complainers naturally. And no man will dare come out to say he was beaten by a woman, he'll be skinned alive by other men. Some people on this forum will even say it is impossible! Or those men are 'not real men'. And you want them to speak out?

The news will always be rife with 'man beats wife' and 'man rapes 3year old' cos its easier to print and more believable. Imagine looking at the headlines tomorrow and it reads 'woman beats husband for coming home late' or 'woman rapes her son' . Naah.
Christianity Etc › Re: Atheists. Come In Let's Discuss. by 5minsmadness: 11:58am On Jul 05, 2014
Martian: I'm not an atheist because I don't have a reason to affirm or deny the existence of mythical creatures.
God or Gods are only found in the myths and legends of cultures, and every god that I've ever heard of is always partial to the culture that worshipped or worship it.

As is well known, the ubiquitous nature of the three desert religions is the result of wars, slavery and colonialism.
After performing the resurrection trick in ancient Israel, Jesus didn't crawl out of another virgin's a$$ in Umuahia and repeat the trick for the Igbos. No! Some europeans had to get the story first, then bring it to Africa at the point of a sword. Likewise, the Europeans didn't know about a God named Chukwu before they met the igbos.

Each story about a god sounds as far fetched as the next, so why place one culture on a pedestal and call their bullshit story factual??

Afterall, Obatala created humans from the mud in Ile-Ife, Yahweh created the first human from mud in the Garden of Eden, Zeus and the Olympians lived on Mt. Olympus, which just happens to be the biggest mountain known to the ancient Greeks.

Why should I consider Yahweh a Jewish myth, Zeus a Greek myth but Obatala has the creator of the world and everything we see?

Why do people take Obatala as a god created in the minds of ancient Yoruba spiritualists and why do people view the Greek gods as creations of clever Greek writers; but Yahweh is not the creation of some ancient Jews??

In my opinion,if there is a being responsible for what we call the universe, that being would be out of the scope of our intellectual abilities. We won't be able to discern its existence unless it makes itself or themselves known.
A pity I arrived on this thread late. However:

Do you know that in Greek mythology Prometheus also made man out of munld while Athena breathed on him to give life. Does it not trouble you that all 'mythology' have basic similarities when it comes to the creation of man? Could it be possible that early on in man's history the truth was simple and well known but as time went on and man traversed the earth and seperated from each other and different languages came up that the story got muddled up in the process. Does similarity here not give a clue that a supernatural being was involved in man's creation? And do you notice how all ultimate supernatural beings have the same characteristic as God almighty?

Second bolded, has it occurred to you that the Almighty entity has tried time and again to make himself known to us, hence the salvation story?

But not Africa and Nigeria in particular.
Maybe if I lived in the west,I wouldn't be so passionate about it.

But anyone who asks how females are oppressed here is not being sincere.

Go on then, how are females oppressed here? And I am talking of legitimate legal oppression and not a crazy drunk lunatic beating his wife to a coma on the news.

I am new to the section
, but I don't see the double standards or problems in the OP. Point them out?

So you admit the " cherry-pickers" are "pseudo" and not true to generally accepted idea on what feminism is, right?

Why are NL men so up in arms about equality like its such a terrible thing for their counterparts to gain a footing in our African societies, and thereby improve our condition as a whole?

Yesterday an 11 year old girl made FP for being rape-d repeatedly by a grown monster 3 times her age. Last week, it was a women who killed her way out of a forced marriage to an abuser. Who is really causing the messes?

I hope by eye candy, you don't mean me and expect me to upload. Nor do I hope you expect me to go searching for eye candy women to post for your benefit. I'm positive you're capable smiley Onnila has beauty threads, this isn't one of them smiley

I welcome discourse wink

Which stalker?
Give it time. You will see what he is talking about. Though I must say since the rapture there seems to have been a softpeddaling on such issues, or maybe those people haven't recovered from the data loss?

About the bad news, are you saying crimes are not committed by women? The problem most sane nigerian men have is with the double standards feminism breeds. Early this year a guy opened a thread where he had been forced to have sex by a more experienced female. He felt terrible. However he was laughed off the thread and assured that he 'enjoyed' it, welcome to manhood etc. Nobody felt his pains. Imagine if it was a female.

A few months ago a prominent music star Jay-z was repeatedly assaulted on an elevator by his wife's sister solange. TV shows actually came up to say it must have somehow been his fault. Of course charges were not pressed and the case was dropped. Can you imagine what would have happened to Jay-z if he had been the one to slap the woman and kick her in the gut with a high heeled shoe? He'd be serving time now.

Where do you see real lack of equality in our society nowadays? Did your parents deny you education because you are female? Were you shouted down in church when you gave testimony? Does your husband come home from work, address you as 'woman, bring my food!' and then sits watching the news while you kneel beside him massaging his feet in fear and trembling?

I believe Feminism was once for a good cause but has now been so adulterated it has outlived its usefulness. If most of society sees the movement as extremist, anti family, anti-men, etc then its most probably true. Let's call a spade a spade and stop trying to eulogise a now deformed movement.

I stand for feminity and not feminism.

8. Kicking Him When He's Down - Did you forget how supportive and generous your man was when you were dealing with family issues, struggling through school, had little or no money to pay for school fees, buy clothes, toiletries, food and etc. and everything in between? Yet the minute your man is faced with job loss or some other life-altering event that causes him to lose his income, you are quick to badmouth him to your family and friends. Isn't turnabout fair play? If you have always been treated well by your man and, he's proven to be a hard worker and faithful to the core, why can't you support him, if you're capable of doing so, when he needs it most? Surely you can't be that selfish - could you?
All the points are very important but I just wanted to stress on this a little bit.
A thread was created here a while ago on a lady who said her husband was eating into her finances. She was angry that the mam seemed not to be doing anything for the family again and she was the one now bringing in the money. In no time other females and some males swooped in, insulting the man, saying what a deadbeat he was how African mentality was bad, how she should cater for herself only and leave the man to suffer.

Nobody saw the part in her story where she said he supported her while they were courting. Nobody saw the part where the man took care of her when they got married until he lost his job and she in turn found a job. It amazes me how some women can be so shallow and selfish. Now they want him to 'be a man' and go out even if its labour work to find a job, regardless of who he was before.
Happily though I think the complaining woman later realised people were projecting their own problems on her marriage and decided to seek better advice elsewhere.

Women should realise that not everything ends on the man's table. You married him didn't you? You loved him before you agreed to marry him, right? Do you know what 'love' entails? If you didn't love him why marry himin the first place and then start complaining or talking of divorce at the slightest signs of difficulty? Marriage is for life, you think problems won't crop up?

Hope I haven't derailed just wanted to get some bile off my throat. Una do-o.
