Dele Alake would be very influential in PBAT government.

When governor Tinubu appointed him as commissioner of information in 1999, he pressured Tinubu to add Strategy to his portfolio before he could accept.

Today, he is Special Adviser on special duties, Communications ad Strategy to president Tinubu.

If you are wondering why NTA is performing well suddenly, Dele Alake is the answer.

Just this evening, he appeared as a guest on NTA during the 9pm news hour.
Dele Alake would ensure NTA takes its rightful place.

You people argue too much.

Legal difference where?

This is Nigeria.

In the US, such a delineation may occur but not in Nigeria.

Both convicted people and awaiting trial inmates are all in prisons in Nigeria.

People spend 12 years in kirikiri without being sentenced. Tell them they are in jail not prison.
It may not necessarily be a practical difference in Nigeria…
But it’s still a SUBSTANTIVE legal difference that any supposedly professional “journalist” should know.

The distinction between being in PRISON and JAIL is not merely a cosmetic one…
But rather a SUBSTANTIVE one, distinguishing between inmates in custody pre- and post-trial.

If this is the attitude of so many Nigerians…

What does remanded in prison? Sent to prison does not suggest conviction, especially when the same report says she was granted bail. Only those who are not aware of Nigeria's legal process would be confused. 95% of people in prison in Nigeria have not been convicted.

EducationRe: Students’ Loan: FG To Introduce Tuition Fees In Universities by 9jaRealist: 7:38pm On Jun 14, 2023

What you pay for these services in a federal institution is highly subsidized that is why they cost more in a private uni. Paying 10k a semester for hostel rent and utilities cannot be market rate.

Also, overheads such as staff salaries.

Capex spent on equipment of all sorts
Tuition fees are fees you pay for your actual academic instructions/lectures…
It’s such an ELEMENTARY concept that it’s shocking to see so many struggling with it.
cool

I just don't understand this daily trust news. Universities owned by Federal Government were never free. Despite studying many years ago, I paid Tuition fees every semester. What I Daily Post should have mentioned is an increase in tuition fees. I just don't understand the way and manner which these journalists who should keep us informed are misinforming us.
I don’t know about EVERY single federal university…
But I know for a fact that UNILAG is CURRENTLY tuition- free.

Paying for accommodation, library, sports, food, clinic, etc…
Has absolutely NOTHING to do with tuition - that is, academic instructions.

.Dollar for hajj, dollar for pilgrimage , etc.
That one should go.
But when u say subsidize consumption,
The impact of subsidizing the fx for importation raw material of which is part of production cost is subsidizing production.
That is because we are Import dependent.
I am not here to discuss who is a drug baron or not,

I'm talking of macro economic policy for the general wellbeing of the Nigerian economy.
U will not understand the implications of Dangote and the sister NNPC being privately owned and insitu in many countries.
I hope u know a lot of politicians are equity holders both in Dangote and NNPC.
If u think the whole fx will enter Nigeria,. Well.
Let see as it unfolds
Regards
Dude, forget hot button items like hajj, even the petrol subsidy was essentially subsidizing consumption…
If you want to subsidize PRODUCTION, use tariffs, tax incentives, good infrastructure (including power), NOT “cheap” forex.

Virtually EVERY nation imports some raw material/components…
But Nigeria is “import dependent” because it’s cheaper to use subsidized forex to import (toothpicks, etc.) than to produce locally.

When you have these forex differentials, you are not only creating an avenue for corruption and rent-seeking…
But since you are actually subsidizing the cost of forex for only a segment of the population, you’re creating winners and losers!

Meanwhile, NNPC is NOT privatized (100% of its shareholding is held by MOFI), so it has NO politician equity holders…
But why would anyone expect ALL of the forex earned by Dangote (or any other Nigerian company) to ‘return’ to Nigeria?

So, yet again, Tinubu may well be a drug baron…
But his forex policy is the BEST (not the perfect) one for Nigeria. Time to start weaning our economy off cheap subsidized imports.

Lush100:
The way some guys are shouting up and down on this policy.
I hope u know how this affects international trade.

There is no country of the world that doesn't subsidize a particular thing or the other depending on the nature of that country.
The reason for our forex shortage is because we are import dependent.

They have stolen so much money such that there's no naira to defend the dollar.
Corruption and import dependency are the twin problem.
If u think Dangote which is privately owned who is in many countries and may want that they are paid their incomes in Nigerian because the thieving share holders do not want to expose their wealth.

This would not positively affect the naira unlike if NNPC was Nigerian owned.

God help us
Most nations subsidize PRODUCTION, not consumption (as we do in Nigeria)…
When price of imports rise, we ideally should become LESS “import dependent” and turn to local substitutes and/or inputs.

Furthermore, not quite sure what “income” you’re referring to?
Dangote’s earnings from, and exports to, other countries are repatriated in dollars (which should translate to MORE Naira).

Tinubu may well be a Drug Baron…
But this seems at first blush the BEST forex policy (no policy is perfect) for Nigeria, and hopefully his successor continues it. wink

ChybuzzDD:
Where will the more inflow come from??

You guys are so annoying and ignorant
Even if more forex doesn’t come in…
The states should receive more Naira (with the elimination of the approx N300/$100 disparity).

However, more forex should come in through OFFICIAL channels…
Since there is basically no (arbitrage) advantage in bringing forex through unofficial windows.

Nonetheless, this is a policy with LONG-TERM benefits…
A unified (reasonably predictable and hopefully therefore relatively stable) exchange rate should aid FDI (and thus more forex).

Tinubu may well be a Drug Baron…
But this seems the BEST (no policy is perfect) forex policy for Nigeria (hoping his rightful successor continues it cheesy).

This is good move in the right direction, my only observation is the guarantors aspect of the law, the difficulty of securing the listed guarantors would be enormous and may give birth to further corruption; asking for percentages or divide and share mechanisms. Where will children of the poor get hold of the guarantors. The admission letters and attendance certification/registration would have been enough to access this fund.
Somebody has to actually pay for these loans…
Otherwise, the FG might as well just dish out scholarships.

I suspect many recipients will not repay anyway (and will instead simply ”japa” if they can).

Hopefully, this doesn’t turn out to replicate the FG’s Students’ Loans program of our parents’ generation in the 1970s/80s, which just turned out as a massive drain on the national treasury (and ironically many of the beneficiaries ended up ”japa-ing”! At the very least, I would suggest that recipients of these loans not be issued with passports until the fully repay their loans (with an exception made for students traveling for advanced degrees), because the experience of our parents’ generation (1970s/80s) turned out to be that once people ”japa”, any hope or expectation of repayment (or ability to collect) vanish with them - effectively having Nigerian taxpayers funding/subsidizing skilled manpower for much richer advanced economies
