Should we be giving out what we don't have enough in the first place?

It might interest you to know that Nigeria has been the one shouldering the burden of the entire West Africa when we should be focusing on ourselves. Even Ghana's electricity is powered by Nigeria's gas. If something happens to the West African Gas pipeline powered by Nigeria, light drops significantly in Ghana.

The earlier we started redirecting our resources inwards the better for us. When we get it right, then we can start exporting energy again.
Omihanifa:
Person way never chop belle full angrydey give another person food to chop undecided

As if Nigeria won't make more than that amount of money if Niger Republic dams the Niger River and Nigeria channels the exported electricity back to its economy.
Jestin:
How can we be supplying Benin Republic and Togo energy when we are yet to experience improved power supply in Nigeria ?? That country Nigeria dey tire person self seriously .
VillageHead:
Nigeria is likened to a herbslist that cures dysentery while its household is dying of that same ailment.
The reason that we have an agreement to supply Niger Republic (not sure about the other countries) with electricity is so that they do not dam the River Niger upstream, which will severely affect the flow of the river into Nigeria. That will not only affect the hydro stations up North (in Kainji and Shiroro), but will also drastically affect the farmlands and agricultural production (including fisheries) in Nigeria.

PS: Also the electricity is paid in forex for at COMMERCIAL RATES (unlike in Nigeria, where tariffs are not cost-reflective)

Enlightenment is different from educated... We need to be both in this country.

Do you understand what double taxation is? Even our so called government are not accountable for our little tax we pay. So we should expunge this your notion from our mindset and let the government do what they are supposed to do. Era of mediocrity should be done with abeg
Perhaps you should follow your own counsel on the highlighted... grin

Nigeria is NOT be the first country to have tolled roads and/or bridges. Even in most (if not all) of the advanced economies where tax compliance is actually much GREATER than in Nigeria, toll roads (and all manner of usage taxes) exist.

Meanwhile, this bridge currently does NOT exist and if a private entity takes the investment risk of raising the capital (most of which will likely be in the form of DEBT from banks, etc.), it deserves to recoup its investment by tolling the road.

Not sure where you got the "double taxation" theory from. If the FG charges for the new trains being put into use, would that be double taxation? If Lagos charges for the new Light Rail or LagFerry or BRT, is that double taxation?

A NEW tolled road is substantively no different from VAT (or other consumption/usage tax). You don't buy VAT-covered goods, you don't pay VAT!

Nigeria is so backward, it does not even have the necessary port infrastructure ti receive most of the components.

thundafire:

seunmsg:
Hitech cannot get the contract. There are only three construction companies in Nigeria today that can handle a 38km bridge. They are: Julius Berger, CCECC and Borini Prono. I don’t think the contract will be given to any company outside of these three.
This will NOT be a windfall for the winner....

It's a PPP arrangement and thus Lagos will NOT pay a penny...
The entity that wins the bid has to finance it itself (and recoup from tolls).

NGpatriot:
Lagos state is a coastal state, but water transportation is very meager and underdeveloped, even investors are not taking advantage of the huge money-making opportunities around water transportation, we just expect the government to do everything, we want the government to build everything with little or no resources and when they take out loans to execute these projects, we cry, criticize and complain.

The Lagos Cable Car people need $280 million, but they are $50 million short, so, who is going to step up with $50 million to get the project off the ground? I think the LASG should step up with the balance for a sizable stake in the operation.

This is a daily multi billion Naira operation with enough capacity to move hundreds of thousands of passengers/day.

Ultimately, it is not by force to move to Lagos, the government can not keep up with over 20 million people with less than $3 billion, the pressure on infrastructure and social services is unsustainable.

Lagos state must decongest.
Under Nigeria's bizarre "federal" system, the federal government controls all inland waterways through National Inland Waterways Authority (pursuant to the NIWA Axt). Accordingly, the states do not have control over the waterways that run through their territories and have to negotiate (or in the case of Lagos when the PDP was in power at the centre, litigate) for use of the waterways and to develop water routes (most of the routes in Lagos require some dredging). Most private investors will NOT invest in some an uncertain regulatory environment (albeit now that Lagos has reached some arrangement with the now APC-controlled FG, UberBoats and a few others have taken the plunge).

Presumably your region is now being massively "developed"? grin

Anyway, appointments are not about parochial "development" (eg, the NPA boss cannot build a port in the North, however much she may wish to "develop" her region), but about fairness (as in every group having an EQUAL stake in Nigeria) and COMPETENCE. Frankly difficult to believe that the only (or even the most) competent Nigerians come from the most educationally-backward (and economically-underachieving) part of the country.
