TravelRe: Nigeria Issues 58,000 Visas To Foreign Investors At Lagos Airport by 9jaRealist: 3:35am On Dec 07, 2019
SUFFERInSMILIIN:
Nigeria is a country of illiteracy. People just celebrate for anything.. 58000 visas were issued and he is celebrating. This is equivalent to 166 foreigners visiting the country every 24 hours. Even a country like Zimbabwe Benin Republic Togo more foreigners visiting the country every 24 hours that Nigeria and people are celebrating
First, nobody is "celebrating" anything, merely giving data...
Second, on-arrival visas are NOT the only visitors visas being used.

Furthermore, even though I do NOT think most of these were investors...
It's nonetheless much BETTER to get 166 investors/day than 1000 tourists/sex tourists.

This is a very stupid idea. No country makes it’s borders this porous without extensive checks. What measures have been put in place to ensure that these are investors as opposed to foreign workers who come to take jobs that Nigerians do not even have? Also our immigration will abuse this by taking bribes and letting anyone in as long as they can pay. Who came up with this dumb idea? We are fighting so many problems already. Opening the airport to business visa may just mean we are importing ISIS escapees by the 1000’s. They have money too.
It's NOT!
SCORES of countries (perhaps up to 100) have on-arrival visas.

Mostly Chinese, Lebanese and Indians.

Those who will turn Nigerians to slaves, make them work from 6a.m to 8pm with peanut.
You don't need foreigners to "turn Nigerians to slaves"....
Nigerians do that all by themselves, especially with the so-called "househelp" system (where 6a-8p would be a LIGHT day). undecided

Very soon Nairaland will either be shutdown or petitioned going by the senseless vitroic anti-Nigeria comments emanating from this forum. No form of regulations for the stupid comment people make. Mature cerebral contents have been replaced by senseless topics where only negative anti-Nigeria contents and senseless gossips make FrontPage news.
We should all be AGAINST censorship here on NL...
The BEST antidote to so-called "senseless vitroic (sic)" is to EXPOSE it to sunlight!

There's absolutely nothing that the Nigerian government does that will ever surprise me. It issued 58,000 visas on arrival at the airport to foreign investors (so it claimed) but would deny Nigerians who happen to have dual citizenship and put them through all kinds of hoops just to visit. It is no secret that Nigerians have more respect and affinity for foreigners more than their fellow Nigerians and would go to bat for a foreigner especially if he/she has a different skin color. These foreigners that it rolls out a red carpet for would not invest in Nigeria simply because NO serious investors would invest in a country that has security lapses, unstable and rife with corruption at all levels unless they have ulterior motive intentions. If they are coming to Nigeria under the guise of investors you better believe that there's something that they want from the country. I wish that these FOOLS that run the government actually know how foreigners that have had the chance to visit the country regard Nigeria. They like visiting the country not for what they can bring and add to make the economy better but for what they can siphon away from it and how easily it is for them to do so with impunity. So, it's time that the government wake up and smell the coffee.
If they have dual citizenship, why would they need visas?
Except it's those low-esteemed ones who want to flaunt foreign passports.

But if they are forced to sell their products below market price , won't the government then pay them subsidy which is the difference between the actual price and the govt decreed price?
That may "work" for the short-term...

But building refineries is not a short-term investment, and there would be major investment UNCERTAINTY regarding what would happen if there is disagreement with the government over what is owed the refiners. It's not like importers who just stop importing until their claims are settled.

Don't argue what you don't know. Yes there is Onne seaport, but the cost of clearing goods is way higher because of some government policies which makes clearing from Lagos ports cheaper.

It is political, beyond your understanding
I will ignore the personal insults...
It merely betrays a lack of substance or a CRUDE upbringing.

There are actually TWO seaports in Onne (the FOT and the FLT) as well as seaports in Warri, Sapele, Calabar and Port Harcourt (apart from the terminals in Escravos, Forcados, Bonny, Qua Iboe and Tuma). A principal reason that costs are higher for goods destined for the Onne ports (or any of the other Niger Delta ports) is higher insurance charges due to militant and piracy activities (real or perceived) in the region., and not because of nebulous "some government policies". In fact, because Onne is part of a Free Trade Zone, it should ordinarily be CHEAPER because of "government policies" governing free trade areas.

We agree to disagree; I will not engage in any back and forth on the subject. My point is clear as is yours. Fact still remains that bad/failed governance provides the boost for the crazy, desperate criminality in the country; I do not exonerate perpetrators either but the root causes and enabling factors are clear to all.
Why are some Nigerians always eager to justify CRIMINALITY?! sad

There are other nations in Africa and across the world with desperately poor people...
And yet these people somehow still manage to conduct themselves with decency, honesty and integrity.

There’s no problem with owing Quadrillion Trillions - if you can COMFORTABLY service it...
Nigeria’s debt-service ratio is 67%, meaning the FG uses 67kobo of every Naira in revenue to service its debt (pay interest).

In effect, the FG is left with only 33 kobo out of every Naira in revenue to “develop” Nigeria...
Given that the FG’s recurrent expenditure is about 70%, only 30% of that 33% is used for capital expenditure.

In other words, for every Naira of revenue, the FG has about 10kobo available to spend on infrastructure, healthcare, education, etc.

How does fuel subsidy deter investment ?
Because investors will not build refineries locally if they are forced to sell their products below market price (at the government-decreed N145 price). That’s why (as I previously noted) the Dangote Group insisted on market-determined pricing for its products.

Yes but that's for debt servicing to oil revenue , not for debt servicing to the budget itself. the budget is higher than oil revenue.
grandstar:
Okay. Point clear.

At the end of the day, it is revenue that carries the day because that is what the government actually has.
The budget is higher than revenue only because we keep BORROWING even more to finance our deficits...
Racking up more debt service obligations and merely kicking the can down the road until the day it inevitably catches up with us.

So what's the way forward?
Get rid of the dubious “subsidy” and deregulate the sector...
That should attract investment, create competition and jobs in Nigeria, and have us exporting products rather than crude.

It is the responsibility of government to create the next hub to decongest Lagos state by building solid infrastructures and business support facilities that will force people to leave Lagos to other states.

Take a look at Apapa, Tincan area, the government ought to have declared an emergency on the issue of Apapa seaport.

Get other seaports outside Lagos working fully at all cost.

Create seaports in Ondo, Anambra and connect them by rail with Lagos, Portharcourt and Abuja. Help other states develop so industries can naturally relocate their factories to those other states and watch people naturally leave Lagos for good.

Nigerian government seem not to be ready to put Nigeria on roadmap to national prosperity
It is the responsibility of other STATE governments...

Meanwhile, there are many functional seaports outside Lagos...
PRIVATE importers just prefer to use Lagos ports for several reasons.

Sanwo-Olu is a very clueless governor. He might end up being the worst governor in Lagos state history.
The same OPay that has been helping Lagosians meet up with appointments, avoid sacks and saved lots of productive hours usually spent in Lagos traffic on a daily basis ?
Why are these people allergic to anything that will reduce the transportation woes of the average Lagos residents ?
The traffic laws only banned motorcycles with engine capacity lesser than 200cc from plying the highways and other restricted routes. To the best of my knowledge, OPay , Max etc use motorcycles with engine capacity around 250cc upwards.
The amount of traffic in Lagos metropolis is unprecedented, Yet this point and kill Governor wants to to make things worse.
While tankers are having a field day on the roads and he’s at lost as to what to do, it’s the Bike that are helping to alleviate the suffering that he’s barking at.
All the roads he announced will be repaired or reconstructed as soon as possible are still the same thing. From Badagry to Ikorodu , Epe, Alimosho, etc.
Infact all the 5 divisions of Lagos state is worse than he met them.
I hope Cardinal Odumbaku and other Lagos APC stalwarts are taking keen interest on this accidental Governor they foisted on us?
AMBO was bad, pompous, not a good party man etc. But I don’t think Sanwo-Olu is any better.
Ambode was only considered “bad” by APC and MC Oluomo people because he was not sharing loot and contracts (euphemistically known as “not a good party man”), but certainly not because of his projects and productivity (albeit he could have been more enthusiastic about the Badagry Expressway and the Blue Line). What these primordial party hacks are unable to grasp is that even though political officeholders are elected on the platform of a political party, once in office they should be there to serve the ENTIRE population and not just their party’s interest.

I notice something with nigeria leaders, They start there nonsense with begging, After the masses allow them implement there useless project due to begging , They turn around and start beating people to allow them improve there implementations, Just imagine, This toll gate price has doubled the amount people paid when it was first built.
Have you ever heard of inflation and/or currency devaluation?
If you are a car owner in Nigeria and cannot afford a $1 toll, go use the Falomo Bridge or go through Onikan axis.

Meanwhile, perhaps Nigerians should be “beat” more often because I have never ever seen such lawless people in life - driving against one-way traffic, jumping queues, pasting posters where it clearly says “Post No Bills”, building on drainage channels, disposing waste in gutters and canals, disobeying every rule and regulation ever made and being proud of it as supposedly being ‘smart’, the list is endless!
