I am not one of those people who believe that people must always get married...

But if a long-term couple is doing everything as if married, why not just go ahead and formalize it - especially as there are legal PROTECTIONS in a marital relationship that may not necessarily exist outside of one.

My brother it saddens me tremendously that with all the mountainous natural resources we have in this country, we are still at this stage. As recently as1990 Dubai was hugely a desert area but look at the mighty transformation Dubai and the whole of UAE experienced during this short period of time, that is what is called practical Transformation. I am presently in Singapore and since l have been here l have not experienced a light out not for one second let alone a minute, they don't interrupt electricity here at all if you are a Nigerian like me, you might not get used to it very quickly.

Singapore is a city state, there are only three city states in the world the other two being Monaco and Vatican City, Singapore is extremely beautiful, modern and entirely urban in fact its a paradise on earth and City in a Garden.

Singapore is among the top 5 richest countries in the world by GDP. Imagine the whole country looking like Maitama or Banana Island that is Singapore for you, Singapore is one of the most expensive cities in the World to me personally l will rate Hong-Kong over Singapore any day that place is way expensive.

Someone will argue that it is because of the size of the country that's why it is easy for the Quick transformation, though Singapore is the number 20th on the list of the smallest counties in the world. The vision of their first Prime Minister LKY was so strong that if Singapore were bigger than this he will transform it even if he takes him 50 years to do, and if he can not continue due to death, other leaders will continue. did you know the reason while the Changi Airport in Singapore has been maintaining the number 1 spot for 7 years consecutively, it is because they don't stop to make the airport looks great every year, Singapore is one of the safest countries in the world, you can walk on the streets 3am here without any fear of being killed or harrased.
Not making excuses for Nigeria’s mostly inept leadership, but...

Singapore and the GCC countries were aided by two basic elements we didn’t/won’t (and should not want to) have: (1) a largely ethnically-homogeneous population (with the GCC countries entirely Arabic and Singapore with about an 80% ethnic Chinese population); and (2) they have largely been developed under dictatorial and/or autocratic leadership (and you can add South Korea to list, with a basically ethnically homogeneous population and developed under the iron fist of General Park).

In Nigeria, we have reportedly over 200+ ethnic groups fighting with each other, and if you dare to even suggest demolishing crumbling buildings on Lagos Islands, slums that pockmark our urban cities, illegal markets or mechanic workshops along the streets or underneath high-tension power lines, you had better be ready for armed combat or endless court injunctions. We have to accept that our chaos is the price we pay for our relative freedom, while the Ruler of Dubai can simply decree that he suddenly wants to build a canal down the middle of the city and all land require thereto is simply ceded to the state.

Hian, for saying God didn’t give Nigeria sense to manage her resources, I will send your details to Buhari and you will be arrested in the next 24hours grin, kidding with you though, @topic, I can't agree with you less.

l read an article yesterday about the UAE, the Sovereign wealth fund of ABU DAHBI alone is 875 billion dollars and that of Nigeria is 2.15 billion dollars, Nigeria is about 200 million in population the UAE is about 9.5 million, local citizens is about 1.5 million while foreign expat is around 8 million.

Nigeria, the UAE and several GCC countries all have oil and gas, one is smart/ intelligent with pragmatic, visionary and caring leaders while the other one has a burukutu / Suya / cow rearing president ruling the country with 14th century brain and the results is what you see all over the country = the headquarters of poverty in the world shocked
But when Obasanjo was fighting the Govs to establish the Sovereign Wealth Fund, weren’t most Nigerians backing the greedy Governors? shocked

Even the Excess Crude Account that Obasanjo established as a stabilization fund (or rainy day savings), and which had as much as $22 billion, hasn’t that been subsequently raided and depleted by Jonathan, Buhari and the Governors to the extent that it currently has just about $183 million this week (shockingly down from $631 million just recently in December 2018). Granted that we have a Constitution that generally promotes rent-seeking, but even the constitutional stipulation that all income accruing to the Federation Account belongs to the three tiers of government (federal, state and local governments), it does NOT require nor mandate that such revenue be spent immediately without savings!

Amusing that any Nigerian would be surprised that Nigerian airports do not make the cut...

First, most Nigerians have no idea whatsoever what an aesthetically beautiful airport terminal would cost (even without the in-built corruption often attendant to most Nigerian infrastructural projects), which is why many are still bitching about borrowing $500 million from the Chinese to build 5 new (standard) terminals. Meanwhile, Ethiopia spent 250 million for just 1 new terminal, while Morocco spent $500 million and Senegal spent about $700 million for just one airport each (and on an altogether different level, Dubai spent $4.3 billion for its one latest terminal). So we are getting essentially what we are paying for (sans the corruption haircut), but at this point in our development what is most important for us to build airports that work and try to keep our airplanes from falling out of the sky. Education and healthcare are more of a priority for us at the moment than fanciful airports. Would rather see a Nigerian university in the Top 100 than an airport in the Top 10.

The Murtala airport is a disgrace to the name airport, developed countries will not even use that filth as a bus terminal..it's that rotten. Congrats to Singapore..
But MMIA is suitable for Nigerians... cheesy

It is just as much of a “disgrace” as the behavior of Nigerians. At any airport in the world, you do not need to be told which boarding area is handling the flight to Nigeria. Just the shouting, arguing, pushing, fighting and trying to get around the rules (from trying carry an engine or fridge as hand luggage to everything else), is more than enough to identify each Nigerian-bound flight. MMIA is ideal for such behavior.

Did Tony complain to you or to anyone else (or placed it anywhere on SM or other public realm) that he did not grant consent for his work to be publicized with his picture? The PROJECTION here yet again is that you believe that he is ashamed of his job. Unfortunately, such projection arises probably because you would be if you were in his shoes - but that says more about you than Tony. You just displayed your ignorance. Go and do your research, they only came with ideal, an abstract ideology
I decline to climb down into the gutter of personal insults with you, because I was raised much better...

Nonetheless, on the SUBSTANCE of the matter under discourse, I do not exactly what you are trying to say by “ideal, an abstract ideology” but we all know for a certainty that MTN brought $285 million to pay for its operating license, and pursuant thereto brought in billions of dollars to build thousands of cell sites across Nigeria. Of course because Nigeria is a country disgracefully characterized by prevalent insecurity and poor-to-nonexistent infrastructure each cell site meant not only paying for CofOs and to the local baale or chief, but also paying for private security and sometimes local vigilantes or the often ubiquitous so-called ‘youth groups’, and because Nigeria shamefully cannot adequately provide even basic public electricity paying for 1 or 2 generators per site (the 2d generator to backup the 1st).

MTN’s investment and operations has provided TENS OF THOUSANDS OF JOBS FOR NIGERIANS directly and even more jobs indirectly, many of such Nigerians who would otherwise be pulling thug duties for the corrupt politicians that so many Nigerians idolize and worship or engage in Yahoo, cultism, stealing used panties and such other nefarious activities. Those jobs not only provide these Nigerians with a decent honest livelihood that affords them the means to take care of their families and contribute to general economic activities (by buying stuff, paying rent, going to the dentist, etc.), but the income taxes paid by each job holder generates revenue for the government which (if not first stolen by the politicians you are cheering for) is then be invested in social infrastructure such as schools, healthcare and public transportation.

It is rather shocking that a lot of Nigerians apparently do not have a basic understanding of how market economies work, but whether you are an Akara ball or Aso oke seller, ultimately every market participant (or investor) seeks to get more from the market than they came in with.

Before you react to this, first out sentiment aside. The church has every right to do whatever it likes on its property. I can only feel a bit concerned if they didn't warn the traders beforehand. However, Remember Jesus didn't warn those traders who turned God's temple into a market place before he flogged them away from the place.

If you put sentiment aside, you will see that we are currently living lawlessly in Nigeria. We have Keke drivers blocking the entrance of a street just because they are looking for passengers. Market women cover half of a busy road causing traffic just cos they want to sell their wares. Danfo buses parking and picking up passengers anywhere as if they don't have bus stops anymore. This illegality has turned our brain upside down that we now frown at measures use to curtail them.

I won't be surprise to see Christians criticize the church for what it did which Jesus Christ also did.
As someone who did not grow up in Nigeria, now I live here the highlighted is the only reason that I sometimes am tempted to feel somewhat sorry for the government. Here in Lagos, it sometimes seems that the government is struggling to build a 21st century city for a population that has a substantial number of people stuck with an 18th century mindset. But then again, perhaps it’s a chicken and egg situation.

While still waiting for more facts to emerge (not aproko stories), I must say that we must have some semblance of order in an around the house of God. Knowing the attitude of Nigerians never to obey constituted authority, I would say this: if they had been warned by the church authorities to stay away from there and they refused to do so, then the church is within its right to do with intruders on their property as they deem fit.

In Winners, there is a laid down procedure. If you want to be a vendor, you have to operate within the walls of the facility and you must be registered so that the church authorities know you and who they are dealing with. I remember a Boko Haram member posing as an ice cream seller was apprehended at one of the church facilities several years back.

It is to avoid these kinds of things that vendors are usually asked to register with the church, pay what they need to pay and get a properly allocated space. But no, you will see people selling on the road, selling on pedestrian bridges, selling under high tension cables....NO!

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! We have to learn to be orderly as a people and do things properly. In other climes, you do not just wake up and because you see a large church with a potential market, you simply pile your goods outside the gate and start selling. No order, no control!
We have to have that “semblance of order” EVERYWHERE from EVERYONE!
Accordingly, it is similarly irritating when churchgoers block streets and roads during service/programs.
Christianity EtcRe: Sellers Goods At Dunamis, Abuja Burnt by 9jaRealist: 1:04pm On Mar 27, 2019
Good decision...
Bad methodology.

They could have gotten rid of the sellers in a more humane and cooperative manner, but it never ceases to astonish how many Nigerians appear to think that they can simply set up a ‘market’ in any free space - on road medians, pedestrian bridges, walkways, bus shelters, roundabouts, in front of offices or even people’s homes, etc. They attract all kinds of elements, litter the place and then bitch about the dirty environment.

BusinessRe: Government Insists On MTN Paying $2b Tax Penalty by 9jaRealist:
Many Nigerians seem unable to grasp the basic concept of RULE OF LAW - and the government apparently even less so...

The Attorney-General is NOT the tax authority and CANNOT just wake up one day and proclaim anyone’s (foreign or Nigerian taxpayer’s) tax liability from numbers that he might as well have pulled out from his backside. The LAW provides a statutory process of assessing and determining taxpayers’ tax liabilities, including an appeal process and a judicial determination of any alleged liability (if necessary). Even with such a horribly incompetent Attorney-General (as seen with respect to several other matters), obeisance and respect for our own properly-constituted laws should be the very minimum requirement for a nation that portends (or even publicly pretends) to be nation of laws.

Nigerians often ponder why and bemoan the fact that Nigeria does not receive anywhere near the levels of foreign investment that many other countries of similar endowment and characteristics receive (and that even much smaller African markets such as Ghana and Rwanda receive even much higher levels of investment), but this is a PRIMARY reason why - the arbitrary and cavalier disrespect for the rule of law. Contrary to much of the (frankly xenophobic) sentiment being expressed on many comments here, foreign investors are NOT against paying taxes or fulfilling other corporate obligations. They just want a TRANSPARENT/PREDICTABLE process not arbitrary ministerial proclamations.

Why have a “large civil service” if you do not have the resources for it? undecided

Unfortunately, this is what happens when people become weaned on a dependency and/or windfall mentality (Nigeria’s oil curse). Because people who generate and depend on their own resources will never hire more employees than they can sustain with their revenues, and/or will put in the effort and inventiveness to try to generate more resources/revenues to do so. Conversely, if the only effort that you have to put in is to fly first-class (or business class, if you are ‘slumming’) to Abuja every month to share money, you can hire as many people as you choose to placate your village folks and sundry benefactors (especially if you only pay salaries after the Govt House entertainment fund and the political slush fraudulently fund tagged as “security votes” have been satisfied). The result is that most Nigerian states are unviable economic entities that are little more than mere clearing houses to collect money from someone else’s hard work or land to distribute to their kin.
