PoliticsRe: BayelsaTV Ends Live Programme After Guests Criticised Govt's Inefficiency by ACM10: 12:23pm On Nov 01, 2012
Bayelsa stinks of corruption. Corruption is glorified in the state. Its government does not tolerate dissent. Meritocracy is nil in the state. Most of its citizen inculcate share-the-money attitude into their culture. Its ministries and parastatals are filled with mindless praise-singers. I spit on that state.

Yes, one can survive without spleen. But you have to heed the advise of your attending physician and surgeon. They alone will determine if it is right for you to remove the spleen.

Check for the position of spleen and liver in the human abdomen on google.

Abali1: I don't have this problem, I have a flat tommy. But I will like someone to explain this to us.
Oga ACM10, please can you help us out (going in search of my boss ACM10).
Thanks for inviting me to make a contribution.
Protruding belly in people living with SCA is as a result of enlarged spleen, liver or both. Due to the fact that they are overworked in the job of breakdown of sickle cell and conjugation of bilirubin. They tend to hypertrophy to compensate for their increased functions.
Its treatment is usually splenectomy when it becomes worrisome. But immunisation against some organisms may have to preceed the surgical procedure. Though most people living with SCA undergoes autosplenectomy before attaining adulthood. There is no treatment for enlarged liver. Partial hepatectomy is not advised. Protruded belly may also be due to ascites if liver decompensates in failure.

@Blink,
Using glucose to treat jaundice is new to me. Though glucose might be of benefit in constant fatigue, but it certainly has no proven benefit in the treatment of jaundice.

sirkay09: Gud mornin Doctor, I will like to know if there are any side effects or complication associated with using a concave lens eye glasses with the wrong lens power.I've been using an eye glasses since the past 10 months now because of short-sight am afraid that i might be using an inappopriate lens power. Is there any risk in that.
I think that an ophthalmologist is best suited to attend to your question. To the best of my knowledge, it has no side effect or complication. It is only prescribed in the correction of myopia which is one of the refractive errors.

Stevecares: Please doc, i need a urgent reply. I took pharmafit Ginseng soft capsule(korea) just a capsule for the first time together with emzor paracetamol on going to bed at night. I was awaken in the middle of the night by body itching, culdn't fall asleep again, and feeling soft stomach, discomfort like worm and d urge 2 use d toilet. Could this discomfort possibly be a adverse reaction of the drug? or caused by other thing (like that very day before night i had a RVS test just 2 knw my status. Could the other cause be from the needle used for the test?). But d result showed negative. But am stil worried cos d itch has last up to 6days now. Thanks!
It is as a result of the medication you took. I continue to warn you guys not to resort to self-medication. Only doctors are trained to prescribe drugs. No one else. Take drugs prescribed by other health professionals at your own risk.

Dynamiq: Hello Doctors in the house. I need your advice and recommendations on my eye problem. I have a very good eye sight but the same eye sight is troubled by what I have been told is Conjuctivitis since I was born. I have learnt over time that it is not the infectious type as me and my dad are the only persons who have had it in our family. I think I inherited it from my dad. Those who make contact with the tears from my eyes never get infected with the eye problem. I also observe that it is during rainy and moist weather that the eye problem troubles me; the symptoms that characterise it, such as itching, redness, tear secretion and swelling normally disappear or subside without treatment during dry seasons. Right now as we are having rains, my eyes are in trouble again. I need to add that over the years I have been attended to by many medical personnel, who only recommend eye drops for me, such as Visine, Chloramphenicol, Spersalleg, Ivisine, etc. I don't use glasses because my sight/vision is excellent, despite my eye irritation. I have passed ALL eye tests in the past.
In short I have used the majority of eye drops sold in pharmacies/chemists but they only give relief. Please what I am now looking for is a CURE, and I would like doctors in the house to talk to me on this. I am optimistic that this problem has a cure. I will be glad if I find it. Thank you.
What you have is allergic conjuctivitis. You have to avoid the triggering factors like dust, moulds. Stay in a room which is tiled instead of rugged. Or better still, change environment. If anti-histamines like visine could not control your symptoms, then you have to meet an Ophthalmologist. He will prescribe an eyedrop drug containing steroid and neomycin. I bet that your symptom will subside when placed on that.

Cool83: am having back pain, constant high temperature, occasional prolong cough, feeling as if something is moving in my veins, getting tired easily.most time my mantoux is neg-,
You may have to visit a hospital. Back pain alone does not diagnose Tb of the spine. It must be accompanied by spasm.
Prolonged cough might be due to pneumonia or other conditions.
Fever in Tb is low-grade.
Pls visit a tertiary health centre.

filcast: 'You gave a clearer description of your symptoms now. The physician who diagnosed peptic ulcer can't be wrong. In western countries, diagnosis of peptic ulcer involves both invasive and non-invasive investigations, of which endoscopy is the gold standard. But in Nigeria, we only depend on our clinical acumen and the progression of the symptoms to make diagnosis of peptic ulcer. So our diagnosis is blind at best.
The current treatment of peptic ulcer is called "triple therapy". It involves two different antibiotics and one acid-reducing agent. Treated for two weeks, while the acid reducing agent is continued till one month. I expect your physician to know about this protocol.
Other older regimen has high rate of treatment failure. Yours might be a case of treatment failure'.

Hello doc,i culled the quote above from your response during our interaction on 19th sept. Today a doctor prescribed the triple therapy for me but he prescribed the 'ulsa kit'-omeprazole,tinidazole,clarithromycin- 1 capsule each twice daily, for only one week (remember you said 2 weeks) while the acid reducing agent (rabeprazole) continues for 1 month. Is this adequate?
It's adequate. Hope it has subsided?

Abali1: I don't know how to stop the yellowing of the eye, but I notice that when I take excess water my urine is normally clear and people don't comment on me having "yellow fever". It's not as I carry mirrow arround. Infact, I no dey look mirrow.
The yellowing of the eye is as a result of the deposition of the bilirubin pigment on the sclera(white part of the eye). Bilirubin is the breakdown product of haemoglobin. Remember that haemoglobin confers on the red blood cell(RBC) an ability to transport oxygen.
In a normal RBC, its life span is 120 days. But the life span of a sickle (RBC) is between one-third to two-third the life span of the normal RBC. This means that the life span of a sickle RBC is shortened. Therefore there is excessive breakdown of sickle RBC and the release of its bilirubin pigment.
Human liver will be able to handle this breakdown in a normal RBC by metabolizing them(conjugation). The conjugated bilirubin pigment is excreted from the liver to the intestine. They are subsequently acted upon by the intestinal bacteria and excreted with the faeces as stercobilin. Some are later absorbed and excreted in the urine as urobilinogen. Thereby giving urine a yellowish colouration.
But in people living with SCA, the excessive breakdown of RBC as a result of short life span usually overwhelms the livers ability to metabolize bilirubin. Therefore, the level of unconjugated bilirubin in the blood rises, leading its deposition at the sclera of the eye and mucous membranes of the skin.
The little you can do to help yourself is to rehydrate. Take more water. This helps to flush the blood and leads to its increased excretion in the urine.

crisycent: My sister and her husband are both AS. After the birth of their first child, it took 5 years before they had the second. This is not because she couldn't get pregnant but because whenever she's pregnant, they test the genotype of the baby in her womb and if it is SS, they abort. But thank God that they finally had to healthy AA male twin babies.

I suggest that if you truly love your AS partner, marry her but make sure you check the genotype of the baby in your wife's womb before you create problem for yourself. Sickle cell is not something anyone can cope with and you just can't help but feel sorry for people with this disease. Not everyone is morally depraved to abort a foetus. But couples who can lower their moral bar can try this strategy.
PoliticsRe: Blame Gowon And Awolowo For Biafra Genocide - General Madiebo by ACM10(op): 12:36am On Nov 01, 2012
Katsumoto: Why won't these chaps let history be? They blame everyone else but themselves. Southern Cameroun was tied to the Eastern Region. If Southern Cameroun had been treated fairly by the Eastern region, they would have voted to remain with Nigeria just as Northern Cameroun did. The vote by the Southern Cameroun was a rejection of the Eastern region but these guys keep lying.

British Cameroons was ruled from Nigeria until 1954, when members of the Southern Cameroons in the Nigerian Eastern House of Assembly walked out and returned to Buea, capital of Southern Cameroons, where they formed a thriving parliamentary democracy which lasted until 1961. From 1954 then, the Southern Cameroons was self-governing, with its government, Prime Minister, parliament, judiciary and House of Chiefs. It conducted its first free and fair election in which power changed hands peacefully in 1959.

In pursuance of this idea of “independence by joining”, a UN-organised Plebiscite was held in the Southern Cameroons on 11 February 1961 in which the following questions were put to the Southern Cameroons people: “Do you wish to achieve independence by joining the independent Federation of Nigeria?” or “Do you wish to achieve independence by joining the independent Republic of Cameroon?” The People of Southern Cameroons voted to “achieve independence by joining the Republic
of Cameroon”.

Of course, the Plebiscite was merely a mechanism used by the United Nations to discover the intention of the People of Southern Cameroons. The proposed partners for joining, Nigeria and Republic of Cameroon, were not part of this consultation and quite clearly also, the determination of this choice by the UN could not be the implementation of the choice.

Southern Cameroons was therefore administered from Enugu, which was the headquarters of the Eastern Region of Nigeria. Under this administration Southern Cameroons suffered ‘Ibo domination.’ The Ibo established control over Southern Cameroons who were then badly discriminated against.

When the first parliamentary elections were organised in the territory to choose representatives to the Eastern Regional House of Assembly and Federal House in Lagos, Southern Cameroonians walked out in protest at the inequalities and declared Benevolent Neutrality in Nigerian politics.

This then led to the holding of the first Southern Cameroons Conference in Mamfe in 1953. Attendees at the Conference adopted a petition which they addressed to the United Kingdom Government demanding separate regional status in conformity with Southern Cameroons’ status as a UN Trust territory. It was from this point that Southern Cameroons nationalism sense of born.

http://lydiaandbernard./cameroon-a-brief-history/

Following a dispute within the Eastern House of Assembly in Enugu in May 1953, nine out of 13 delegates from the Southern Cameroons, who had originally been elected on the platform of the National Council for Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC), opted for ‘neutrality’, claiming that they were not Nigerian. Mr. S. T. Muna, the only Southern Cameroonian in the Eastern Executive Council at that time was actually dismissed. This crisis led to the name change from “National Council for Nigeria and the Cameroons”, as the NCNC was then known, to “National Council of Nigerian Citizens.
When Madiebo's account favours your line of argument, he becomes a credible historian. But when it conflicts with your line of thought, he becomes a liar.

You claimed that it was Zik who struck out the seccession clause from the constitution. You could not put up a credidble defence when you were exposed as liar.

You started a thread to assail Sanusi claiming knowledge of economics. Yet you don't know the economic indices which affects the strength of a currency.

You claimed that Awolowo offered Zik the position of prime minister when Awo was secretly negotiating with Sardauna to form a coalition. When you were busted; you labelled Awos trescherous act "politicking". You later went eeriely silent on that issue.

You continue to shamelessly dance unclad in this forum with your revisionism. You can never make your point without diminishing the other person. You must call the other historian liar as if you have a first hand account of the event. Only your account is correct cos you have monopoly of history.

You claimed that Ifeajuna is a cousin to Zik, much to the chagrin of some of us who grew up in Onitsha. When you were challenged, you called on Ajuluchukwu as if he he has an exclusive knowledge of the two families.

You went berserk yesterday, quoting article from nigerdeltacongress and dawodu. I only felt sorry for your outward show of desperation. Why can't you research deeper on a topic instead of spamming the thread with junk articles?

You continue to dance around on the forum from one position to another like your demi-god Awo. Shifting the goalpost whenever you are busted. You only deserves our pity.

So the drugs must pass through those stages.
