Don't try us oo, We are very sophisticated according to APC and amala and ewedu people. grin

PDP controls the senate.

Tinubu should keep using osibanjo as his house boy.
If you think PDP is in control, then you must be joking. The Senate is simply out of control! Neither has APC or PDP in control of it!

What i wish APC will do is to suspend or dismiss Bukola Saraki from APC, let him return from whence he came from. He does not deserve to be reunited with the APC leadership after winning. I wish APC should do something to him to serve an example to any of their members who feels high and mighty to work against his party for selfish reasons.

I was supporting Saraki but not at the moment for this serious anti party deed. I expect Buhari to work with him until such a time when his services will no longer be needed.

This was done by Tambuwal to PDP, even though i liked him, i wanted PDP to use him as example but they didnt want to sacrifice the position.

Looser's consolation.

Can you tell me what happened in Rivers and Akwa Ibom. Was there rigging or not? There were international observers every where in Nigeria covering the elections. How come only Rivers and Akwa Ibom election made rigging headlines? How many pics do you have as prove that there was wide spread under age voting in the north? Can you prove the pics are taken in Nigeria and not Niger, Chad, Ghana or Cameroon? Can you prove the pics was taken in 2016 not 2011, 2007, 2003 or 1999?

You cant say elections was rigged only because your prefered candidate lost. Thats the reason you guys hail Jonathan like a hero he is not with no victory to show for it.

Why wont someone who lost an election not step down? He didnt just decide to step down, Nigerians decided to step him down. The African trend was what people feared but he did the normal thing instead of the wrong. Thats why he wont get that award. Besides, he wasnt liked internationally and the majority of Nigerians didnt like him either.

You are average at the moment, you will become poorer if your Naira becomes weak. 25% of your worth was wiped away because your Naira was devalued. You have to defend the Naira. You will become poorer if you continue to enjoy free PMS. Deal with the cancer and live. Get a new skill and get employed in the real sector that will boom. Make Harsh choices now. A stitch in time saves nine.
25% of my worth didnt just go away, government didnt save in the times of plenty. They were looting and spending recklessly. Now they are broke that they had to devalue. So in addition to 25% loss of my worth i should sacrifice more of my worth for them to continue their recklessness.

Guy, this is just trust issues. I support subsidy removal, not before i have some trust that i am making a sacrifice for my country not some greedy politicians.

Dont ask me to get a new skill because my chosen career is my life long desire and i find joy in doing it. If you encourage me to lose it in pursuit of more money, you think Nigeria will grow if every body decides to go for paying jobs leaving careers to die. Who will do the career jobs? Assuming i am a teacher and i love teaching which doesnt pay much because government devalued, who do you want to go to the classroom when you continue to dish out that advice of yours? If i become a politician just for the money not because i want to deliver good governance, what type of politician do you expect me to be? Advice of this kind encourages corruption and pushes unqualified people in places they ought not to be.

If you do not have money to buy PMS at 200 Naira, park your car at home and sell it if you see a buyer. It means you are too poor to maintain a car, so why buy one in the first place. It also means Your country is too poor for you to own a cars.

If you want to travel, enter a macopolo, they run on diesel.

We can survive with PMS at 200 Naira.
I am average at the moment with fuel at N87 if the government makes petrol N200, they made me poorer. Note that i wasnt poor but the government made. Does that sound like a good government to you? Dont forget, its not that i am buying a car, i own one and used to maitain it with my income, but suddenly i cant afford to maintain it not because my income changed or my responsiblities to family has changed. Remember its just not me alone but the entire middle class down to poor Nigerians.

If the public transport system is too expensive because of 200 Naira PMS, trek. If you cannot trek, occupy your state gov palace and tell him to provide mass transit for you. All modern mass transit run on diesel.
About this, you can tell me that, but no government can tell me or any Nigerian that. Subsidy should be removed before refineries.

Why? Firstly because the goverment cannot afford to continue paying subsidies and also invest the huge sums required to develop our refineries. This is evidenced by the fact the government is borrowing to pay salaries at the moment.

Secondly the goverment shouldn't be the only one building all the refiberies we need. This should fall to private investors, but no investor is willing to invest billions of the government dictates how much to sell their product.

Removing subsidy will free up the sector to market forces and in the short to medium term prices will go up ( they are already up anyway) but in the medium to long term with competition and supply it will come down and the money saved from su sides can be better used in more crucial areas.
Corruption should be removed, then subsidy can go, then refineries building.

Stop the delusion that a hike in PMS prices will affect anything. It wont. If at all it does hike, it is caused by your delusion. Your delusion will panic the market. Your economy is run by diesel not PMS.

There are no reasons while the hike in PMS would mean hike in anything. What was the hike in prices when we paid 97 Naira? Even if everything hikes, we would not die. Again do you want your kids to be out of school, you want your wife/mother/kids to die in the hospital because you do not have good medicare, but you want to fuel your Gen in a leaking house?

Agriculture is the sure bet to put your subsidy money into. It is the real sector. You employ your people, you feed your people, you produce excess and reserve in time of war, you diversify your economy, you earn exchange rate and put less pressure on your naira and as such values your naira which will in turn reduce price of imported PMS. I can go on and on. Hopefully you get the picture now. Do I need to explain to you how investing in education can help our economy?

With all due respect try I read about economics.
I bet you dont own a car or probably dont travel or too rich to travel by road so petrol is pretty useless to you that only a petrol power generating set is worth mentioning. Gen set is the only machine you agree that uses pms abi? We should convert our cars and all those interstate buses, taxis etc which are the main consumers of petrol to diesel abi. The petrol generating set which has a very expensive big brother in the diesel gen set will now be the main power source abi?

How can you get this done with corruption that is in the subsidy regime still existing in the government? Is it not when the subsidy fraudstars are jailed and those in government are locked up that any government plan will work? Removing subsidy wont reduce corruption but just make Nigerians poorer and some corrupt Ministers and Perm secs richer.

You are talking from the perspective of a government who want infrastructure for their people and development for the future generation. Not these men.

We sold Crude at astronomical prices and GEJ did not think of setting up refineries to curb out subsidy wastages. Look at Madam Madueke Flying in Private Jets with government funds. Look at the hundreds of people GEJ flew to different summits. Look at the bags of money distributed during the election.

With Subsidy removal, it would be the same, especially under a government like GEJ. The partial Subsidy removal proves it. The money went down the drain. Same with the Subsidy removal of Diesel. Yet no refineries but the same old scam. Things gets harder, the future ones suffer.

Left to me, let them lose more and let me buy petrol at N55.

Please be more civil.

Stop being scared. It is better we are at the mercy of them and learn how to checkmate capitalism excesses in a free market than still be on thier mercy right now. No country ready to progress will pay subsidy on Imported PMS. Subsidy is not a bad word. It should be done in other places (Transport, Agriculture, Education) Not Imported PMS.
Why not on PMS?

There is subsidy on fertilizer which coincidentally is also a petroleum product but used in the agricilture sector. Is the subsidy on fertilizer having any effect on its availabilty to farmers? No

Some states have various levels of subsidy in education. Is free education in Imo and other states not subsidy? My state of Kaduna pays NECO examinations fee. What has that done to reduce illiteracy in Nigeria. Instead, literacy levels are not getting better.

The poor man in the remotest village feels the immediate impact if N5 subsidy is added or subtracted from PMS. Tell me now which of the various subsidy regimes has the capacity to affect positively or negatively the lives of 170milion Nigerians.

You are mistaken. I dont trust any government official with our 4 trillion annual budget. In fact i think it is too much. Why should i trust them with additional subsidy funds when they are even the ones enjoying it? It makes no sense. Even the parable illustration of Jesus Christ does not allow me to trust the government that constantly loot the coffers entrusted to them. I hope you have not forgotten the parable of 10shillings. The one who brings more gain to me, more responsibility shall be added to him. The one who brings me no gain, his responsiblity will be transfered to him who brings gain. I means i will vote out any government that brings me no gain. I will also give a second chance to him who brings me gain. My gain means education, employment, healthcare etc

We will have a new government from Friday, i dont expect them to remove subsidy instantly. I want them to put a plan in motion that will permanently solve our petrol importation nightmare, they must show commitment to it, only then should they remove subsidy.

See the twin problem;

You want them to build refineries before removing subsidy? The country is too broke to afford to build one refinery while paying the subsidy (most of it are outright stolen funds). As i have said elsewhere, the country has never been as broke as it is at present.

On the other side, it will take years to buid a refinery. Doubt it can be done in 6 months.

So how do you wish to continue?
What if they remove subsidy and still dont build a single refinery in 10yrs? What really stopped them from doing it when they had money? Dont you know that its when one is broke that one starts counting his debtors? They had the money and wasted it, now they want out portion all on promises. Aint you tired of promises?

If they want a refinery they can build it with what they have if they are honest and dedicated to it.

SMH
Thats the problem when you think i use petrol on generator only.

Is it not the same government who coudnt maintain refineries, build new ones, build hospitals, schools, poorly manage the subsidy regime? I should make sacrifices for them to continue their fraud and mismanagement?

A government has to earn the peoples trust before the people will make sacrifices for the government. The only way for me to trust a government is when they build new refineries and maintain the old ones. Before then, they should carry their cross since the mismanged their own share of the petroleum bounty and now they want my own (Subsidy).

Question

Answer

Nigeria can no longer afford to pay subsidy on petroleum products full stop. Corruption or no corruption we do not have the money to pay. You have to let it sink in your head. We have an infrastructural decay that will take 200 billion dollars to fix, you have annual 'deficit' budget of less than 20 billion dollars of which 40 percent is used to fund lazy states and you want to continue to spend 25% of your the remaining budget to subsidize PMS?

Hope the anology below helps

You are the head of your house, and you have an annual budget of 100 naira. Rent in a dilapidated house is 20 Naira. School fees is 20 Naira. Transportation to work and school is 30 Naira. Fueling your generator is 30 Naira. Let say you want to start up a new business to increase your income and as such you need to save 20 Naira. You also need to move from your present apartment because the ceiling leaks water any time it rains, which will require you save an extra 10 Naira. You took a loan from the bank, and the monthly deduction is 10 Naira. You have relations that cannot run their family and they have come asking for money because the landlord is about to evict them from the house. In the middle of all these, Something happened and your annual budget is reduced to 50 Naira. Will you keep paying for fuel to light up your house while you cannot pay rent and your kids can not go to school?

Before you critic always put yourself in a leadership position and provide practical solution

I have a little problem with the analogy as it undermine the importance of petrol to Nigerians. You need fuel not just to power generators but for many other goods and services. The cost of those goods and services depends on the price of petrol so such goods or services will go up with the price of petrol. For example, due to the recent fuel shortage in which my initial petrol monthly spending is 25% of my salary, it is now 50%. I am now poorer than i used to be just because of fuel. i may need to dump my car and life becomes harder.

In the end, government will become richer if subsidy is removed, but Nigerians will become poorer. So removal is not the most suitable option. The best option is refining our own petrol. One more thing, the government who is crying for money has the responsibility of refining the crude oil, if they cant do it, they should bear the brunt not innocent Nigerians. Its their failure, so they should deal with it.

Been on nairaland for years but this will be my first post and I must say its worth it because its one of the most intellectual posts I have seen here. let me first start by saying I am a practising structural engr(two years) in Europe (B.Sc Civil engineering & Msc Structural engineering). What the OP displayed was his idea on optimisation which is definitely lacking in the Nigerian sector. someone was clamouring for 1:2:4 instead of 1:3:6 for a building with such little load and a good soil at that. Thats what a white man will call wastage. In my own opinion, while people have been putting up 'what to do', OP has shown his 'why','how' and 'what' skills. My 2 cents
There is something about Nigeria that you wont understand. By the time you come to construction, 1:2:4 intentionally or unintentionally becomes 1:3:6. Dont forget, there is little to absolutely no quality control of concrete at site. You will need, quality control on cement, water and all aggregates to achieve that mix design grade without this control you cant get it right. You will also need slump test for water quantity control, moisture content test on aggregate, etc. At the end, the margin of error in grade as built becomes great and you cant go back. So you end up with 1:3:6.

Less i forget, in Nigeria where things can be done illegally, building design could be changed mid way into construction without considering substructure. There are cases were more floors are illegally added. This has proved to be disastrous in the past so designers prefer a safer concrete grade, hence, 1:2:4.

There are also case of outright cheating when labourers steal cement, that will automatically mean they will make lower grade of concrete.

i really do not know where to begin with you. first it seems you read my post upside down. and you are also forcing words into my keyboard.

first Peugeot made only rear wheel drive and they were bankrupt, in order to survive they adopted the fwd , cheap and easy to produce. it is your turn to read peougeot history.

Toyota Avalon, Camry and Honda EODs are bigger than Mercedes C class and BMW 3 series in size but they are all FWD . How's that for your size theory. i will also like to point you to the fact that some Asian SUV are even FWD!!!

AND YES, FWD are cheap, more mass product for those who are just interested in the traditional use of vehicles as means of conveyance. NO MORE.

AND NO , the title of this thread is why FWD sucks. the poster i quoted was painting a slightly different picture. MERCEDES A CLASS is Renault with a mercedes badge.

Yes FWD e.g toyota and co will continue to serve the vast majority like tecno and Infinix: affordability over substance.

and i never infer that Lexus is European, only was drawing a comparison to European cars.

LEXUS is Japanese toyota's struggling attempt to meet up with Europe's heavy weights. it is based and debuted in america.

Who said Lexus,.Nissan and accura do not have RWD in an attempt to meet up. The nissan gtr, nissmo and etc have RWD as do some lexus.
What i am telling you is that Peugeot didnt change to FWD because of bankruptcy or cheaper production, they did because the market and technological trend demanded they do. FWD 406 was already in the French market before they started assembly of 406 in Nigeria. You are misplacing reasons. The reason they changed was because FWD is efficient.

Did you remember the classification lesson i gave you its time to use it. The MB C class is a line of compact executive while Honda accord toyota Camry is a line of Mid size while Avalon is a Full size car. Recent models upgrade as in the case of Accord and camry to full size. So that is the basis of comparison at any point. C class is not in the same class with all these cars so you cant compare, their physical size has no effect in comparison. The S of the SUV is sport so that should tell you which class those cars belong and why they need RWD which most Asian manufactures skip to AWD.

Wrong
LEXUS is Japanese toyota's struggling attempt to meet up with Europe's heavy weights. it is based and debuted in america.

Two word : ENGINEERING SACRILEGE.

what you said is not only laughable it is both by physics and engineering laws impossible.

FWD and handling do not go hand in hand; they don't ever mix. A FWD can even keep a straight line under full acceleration and you are talking about handling in top speed. hmn.
I wonder if you know what engineering is.

It is a fact in engineering that FWD have more traction but only lose it due to hard acceleration as a result of transfer of weight to the rear. This advantage makes RWD better on a race where 0-60secs is a determining factor. On very slippery surfaces, there is very little transfer of weight, the FWD will have better traction than RWD which means the FWD stands a better chance. On a race track on a rainy day FWD will catch up or do even better than RWD since acceleration will be lower due to the loss of traction by the wet road surface.

On handling, FWD suffers from understeer which is easily corrected by slowing down and easy from natural instinct while the RWD suffers from oversteer but in this case can be corrected by driver's skill and experience without necessarily losing speed. Therefore, FWD is only easier to handle because the average driver could control understeer while skill is required to correct oversteer correction of RWD. Also there RWD cars are heavier than FWD have more even distribution so it handles better. On the race track, the RWD will be better because as a professional, you dont need to lose speed to correct oversteer unless its out of proportion.

Let me point out to you that you are not a race driver but just a racing enthusiast. The limit with which you can handle your RWD unprofessionally can be beaten by most FWD of same class.

Watch more top gear episodes.

peugeot stopped making rare wheels when they hit bankruptcy and almost went extinct.

VW,Ford, Chrysler, Chevrolet and kia cars are not known for luxury or top brand. RWD are not necessarily for performance. they are for luxury, confort, durability and smoothness and hwndling. All the manufacturers you listed do not own a super car in their brand, they are not serious manufacturers and lack true automobile heritage.

Benz, BMW, Porsche , jaguar, Bentley, Aston martin, Lamborghini, mazarati, rolls Royce, etc do not torch front wheels. and rear wheel isn't fuel consuming except it is a performance car, ask Mercedes users of 1993 C and E class to date.

My point: the big companies with strong history and automobile heritage who pride themselves in solidity, road feel, comfort and great driving dynamics do not touch front wheels except in their halfbreed cars(Mercedes A Class) .

kia, VW, Ford, Chrystler are in roughly same class with Toyota, Honda and co: soulless.

that is why Toyota, when it tries to measure up with Europe in luxury and refinement equips most of its luxury brand Lexus with RWD as do honda does accura and nissan does some infinity.
You need more studies on cars.

How did that first line of yours sound in your mind as you read it to yourself. First to fourth generation Toyota Corolla were all RWD, so Toyota went bankrupt thats why they changed to FWD from the fifth generation abi?

Do you know what car classification is? Every car falls in a certain classification starting from Micro car through, Sub compact, Compact, Mid size, Entry level Luxury, Full size, Mid Size luxury, Full Size luxury, Super cars etc The higher you go on the ladder, the more expensive, bigger in size, heavier in weight, bigger in engine size and therefore populated by AWD and RWD. Down the ladder is the FWD which is more affordable, economical, smaller and have the highest production and patronage.

Would you compare how many Toyota Corolla's to Mercedes Benz C-class on Nigerian roads? How many cars you listed among Porsche , jaguar, Bentley, Aston martin, Lamborghini, Mazarati, rolls Royce do you see on the roads? Can you afford one? Do you think its just a coincidence that only the rich buy these cars? What does it mean to an average Nigerian to say RWD is the best car to buy but he cannot afford it or maintain it? Isnt that the basis of the main post? The fact that something isnt affordable means it cannot be the best like the OP said.

Your point in bold is wrong and misconceived. Big companies with strong history and automobile heritage like you said dont make RWD for just no reason, they make them because they make large sized cars with big engines. Your example of Mercedes Benz A class makes a good case of a compact car but with FWD. Was Mercedes Benz bankrupt to have made a FWD?

If you wish to call other car manufacturers other than those you like soulless, fine, its your business. Know this, that those soulless cars are the real ones that serve majority of people across the globe and Nigeria inclusive.

Lastly, your last line contains yet another set of misconceptions. No 1, Lexus is not a European brand but American. No 2, There are no RWD Lexus or Acura but FWD and AWD. Nissan has RWD only on its Pick up truck lines which is a general feature in those lines.

You dont seem to know why manufacturers use FWD, RWD or AWD. Read my friend, read on.

you have said it better than i could.

front wheel drive is a bore and no serious manufacturer make them in numbers except the japanese. the lack of road feel in a front wheel is always a big turn off for me.
Big lie.

How many Peugeot cars are RWD?
How many VW cars are RWD?
How many Kia cars are RWD?
How many Chrysler cars ate RWD?
How many Chevrolet cars are RWD?
How many Ford cars are RWD?

The truth is SUVs and trucks are either RWD or AWD but mostly AWD because of their weight. The big sedans join this category too. The highest category of cars are FWD accross the globe except for Mercedes Benz, BMW and other few manufacturers that traditionally produce RWD and AWD. These cars are not designed with fuel economy as selling points but as luxury or performance range of cars. How many people buy cars in Nigeria for luxury, small percentage, thats why most people go for japanese and Korean cars.

One big test for you. With exception of Benz and BMW name 2 recent cars that have less than 2.0 litre engines and have RWD? You will see how hard you will think before you get one. 2.0 is the average engine size of sedans in Nigeria.

Nullified..BIG NO to you brother...This is your opinion, Naija is not an exemption..Better come to the South South and east and see what we do with RWD and AWD are the better options here.

The OP is correct except for the plagiarism. He deserves a round of applause for digging this out...
Nullified by what exactly? Do you have an opinion i have not seen?

It is my opinion, my post says so, did you read?

I have lived in the SS for years and have passed SE always. I work in the Niger Delta region mainly going off roads doing construction. I have seen roads you have never seen with your eyes. I used a 4x4 SUV and have gotten stuck uncountable times. My colleagues with cars such as Toyota prado, Toyota Hilux, Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Highlander, Nissan Frontier, Ford Ranger, even a farm tractor and a JCB all got stuck at one point or the other. You dare not take anything less than a 4x4 into those terrain. A Nissan frontier lost its front drive shaft CV joint in site one time and its RWD couldnt get it out for a week. That instance i knew RWD is a great disappointment because the FWD Toyota highlander got out succesfully. That Highlander impressed me.

Have you passed Umuahia-Ikot ekpene rd or Aba- Ik rd in the mid rainy season. Have you experienced when the rd will close for days leaving you to find bypass in villages off road. I have. Do you know which cars cause hold ups on those bypass? Mostly, buses because they have RWD. In general, all the vehiles that find it difficult on the rd are RWD including the articulated trucks that causes the problem since they are mostly RWD.

On slippery roads, FWD does better than RWD
On economy, FWD does better than RWD
On race tracks, RWD does better FWD

Have you ever seen a race track? Do you have a race car?

If you like RWD just say you like it, dont join the op in saying RWD is the best because it isnt.

If you can make list of all passenger cars you know, how many are RWD drive and what category are they? When next you want to disagree give you own opinion but it seems you have non other than to simply disagree with no reasons to back it up.

A lot of misconceptions here.

Whilst a FWD car will have more traction than a similar car with RWD, due to the weight of the engine, this will ONLY apply in wet, slippery, muddy or snowy conditions.

Let's assume both cars have 300hp. The FWD car will NOT accelerate quicker that the RWD car. Sure, the weight of the engine will aid traction in a FWD car if driven moderately hard in dry conditions, it will trail the RWD car if it is launched hard from standstill.

The reason here is weight transfer. When any vehicle is launched, the front end will lift, and the rear will squat, as the shift in weight takes place. This affects EVERY vehicle regardless of configuration - FWD, RWD or AWD.

When weight transfer takes place and the front end lifts, a FWD car will lose a great deal of traction. With a RWD car, weight transfer is favourable, as the rear squats, pressing the rear wheels harder against the tarmac. This aids traction. Watch cars at the drag strip, and you'll observe the rear tyres actually flatten under full-bore acceleration, as all the weight transfers to the REAR.

This is why RWD drag cars use larger tyres at the rear, generally HOOSIERS. Besides offering superior grip, the higher rear end discourages excessive squatting. Or wheelie bars are also employed.

A FWD car is more of an economy feature. It favours better gas mileage, as the power source (engine) is closer to the transmitted drive (the wheels). A RWD set-up hurts gas mileage, as you have a long propshaft for the power to travel down to the rear driven wheels.

An AWD car is the best compromise, even better if it is permanent AWD, with a centre differential.

A FWD car is not great if driven on the limit, especially if it has in excess of 220hp to deal with. Neither is it a quarter-mile car, at least not a great one. I am NOT a fan of FWD cars, preferring AWD, with RWD the next best option. But...

...all these configurations have their advantages and uses. Simply get the one that best suits your finances and use, and be happy. I am happy with AWD, and can't remember when last I owned a 2WD model.
Your post is a final clarification

Relating it to the op's choice in a location like Nigeria. We all know RWD do very well in race tracks, how many do we have? There are so many fast cars in Nigeria, what do their owners do with them? They keep them in the garage or under the car port since there are no drive ways to show them off. There are very little mechanics to work on them. At the end they lose those beautiful looking numbers called horsepower or kill themselves in the machine like el Rufai's son and Sambo's brother did to themselves of recent. The drivers themselves have no training or experience to handle the power.

Car owners in Nigeria end up requiring only a handful of power their cars have which brings them back to the region of FWD. Even though someone like the op wants to drive a RWD, in Nigeria he ends up disadvantaged or simply wasteful. If not for Mercedes Benz and BMW who traditionally make RWD we may have too little sedans with RWD. The almighty 'Lion' of France left behind their RWD and took up FWD for a reason. My personal summary is that RWD is good in the race tracks, FWD is good in the streets and highways and AWD better in all conditions except for its economy disadvantage. Therefore am sure above 90% of cars are made for the streets and highways so we can conclude in general that FWD is better than RWD meaning the op was wrong unless its his personal opinion which of course it isn't since he copied from someone.
