Car Talk › Re: Maintenance Tips For Honda Cars by adanny01(m): 9:54pm On Jul 13, 2015
chamber2:
good day gurus

i seriously need help as i am completely baren of ideas. After buying fuel from a gas station on friday the 10th of july, i discovered that my HONDA 2009 MODEL was jerking and was exhuming some whitish smoke. the acceleration became weak, engine icon on the dashboard startrd blinking continously. The check VSA sign came up also. I drove it to the office but the was behaving as if the entire engine was to breakdown.

i called my mechanic who later diagnosised that the engine is faulty and requires replacement or repair which will cost 100k or so.

i am so frustrated as this car has never given me an issue since i bought it. i knw very little about cars as this is my first.

i need help from the gurus in the house. i live in the easten part of naija and appreciate recommendations as to where to get this car fixed. Its a V6 engine. thanks all
Scan! Scan!! Scan!!!

A little thing like a sensor connector pull out can cause serious problems like this. Besides how will a mechanic abitrarily call repair price without knowing or telling you what is bad? That mechanic is after your hard earned money. Get a better guy especially one who will scan the car first.

I have been using my Honda Accord 2003, 4 Cylinder for about 2 years and some months now and the millage has increased about 43000 since I started using it. The gear is fine and not giving me any problem but I keep having this feeling that the transmission oil ought to have been changed in view of the 43000 increase in millage.
Should I go ahead and change the transmission oil?
Where in Abuja can I get the original recommended DW1? and any idea of the price?
Is there a good trusted alternative to the DW1?

Thanks.

You didn't mention your total mileage. If you have a manual, it is mentioned change transmission oil at 110,000 miles or so. If your mileage is above that please change if you can afford DW1. If you cant afford it now, i advice you continue using it but make sure you make the change before 130,000 miles. However, there is another condition, they also recommended 6yrs for a change as option. A 2003 car was 6 years 2009, that means you were due since then if it has never been changed from factory. Subsequent change is at intervals of 60,000miles

I got original DW1 in Tonsjos service station, Zuba, Kaduna express @N3,000 per US quart. 3 bottles will be a little short because the specific quantity required for drain and fill as per service manual is 2.9litres (3.0USqt). 3 US quart is 2.8litres.

I just changed my inner shaft bearing, after driving for like 10km, I noticed I need to press the pedal hard till the RPM increases real high and still yet it doesn't pick fast. Once it picks, before the gear 1 changes to 2, the rpm increases and and it jecks before changing.
Could it be the inner bearing I fix isn't good? Or isn't fixed well
I hope they didnt remove the inner cups when the car was still hot. If thats what happened, just plan for a new gear box. Changing only the bearing wouldnt cause any problems unless the pull out the inner cups while its still hot

Samfigo1:
Nairalanderz I hail thee....
Goodday everyone , I want to share what I am going through at present, I want your advice or better still judge me I could be wrong with my action.
I have been cohabiting with a lady for a week now, before I move on let me share how the cohabitation began.
This girl came to our house when she was seeking admission to a school close to my house, one of my housemates accommodated her, he claimed the girl was his girlfriend, eventually, the girl got admitted into the school and started living with the guy but after two weeks they had misunderstandings the girl had no where to go, this lady in question since she came into the house I have taken her as my sister and my friend so we had good rapport. After the misunderstanding with her boyfriend she walked up to me and told me she wanted to leave her boyfriend's room for my room and that it won't last long just for mean time I concurred with immediate alarcrity I told her no qualm after consulting her boyfriend about her plan, the guy said he has no problem as regards her plan. The following day she packed her things inside my room, I thought I was dreaming, I started mulling on what to do, someone I have taken as my sister chei! Kongi na bastard you know now.... I kept calm, that night we were discussing she started telling me stories on the same matress with me, suddenly, I kept mute I was not responding to her super story I was even facing down because I was trying to pack my John Thomas I didn't want her to see the kind of press up it was performing, she thought I had slept so she kept quiet. After few minutes I did as if I jarupaing Lol. pardon me sleep walking or unconcious turning anyhow (you should have understood) I put one of my hands across, lo and behold it rested on her bossoms I was thinking she would throw away my hand but she didn't, that was why I drew her closer and we started kissing, pressing and the likes but whenever I wanted to go down low she would say stop and I would sluggishly take my hand off her, after 4-5 days I could not control the urge, I said to myself tonight I must enter this girl, when night came we started as usual when I was about going down she said stop I did as if I didn't hear, I was trying to unclothe her, she was still saying stop but I turned deaf ears when I was about to remove her undies she started crying profusely I was like what the hell! Did I beat you? She did say a word other than crying after few seconds she said ''it's because I'm staying here'' my blood that was flowing for 140km/min just slowed down and I left her on the matress and slept off. The following day she did not leave and this sexual urge was unresistable. Nairalanders am I taking advantage of herhuh? or was she trying to form? If I asked her to leave she has no place to go what can I do?
Na usual shakara, abeg climb the tin. You should hv told her honestly its not because she is staying with you but because you developed feelings for her. She needs consolation and you didnt give her. The rule book says a girl must atleast make an attempt to resist the 1st time. She kissed, what else. If you try again she wont cry. Kill dat konji before the konji go kill you. You don make konji catch me sef.

However, after that konji goes away, you will be stuck with her. It'll be improper to continue living together and cant srnd her packing too. She is definitely taking advantage of you but wants you to feel you are.

One thing I would like to sort out on this ride. Its been there ever since I owned it or got my scanner I should say... There are no readings on the O2 B1S1 when running livedata. On my own scanner, the O2 B1S1 output doesn't not show up let alone having readings. I only see outputs for O2 B1S2. On a different scanner I tried, the O2 B1S1 didn't have readings. So its not a scanner thing. My scanner has access to engine, SRS, ABS and transmission. Car moves fine, no check engine lights.
Haven't really seen much on this online. I'm beginning to think it has to do with the OBD II port huh

Siena, Gazzuzz, CityNG et al I need your help

NB: 2.4L 4cyl 2003 Accord LX. Auto transmission.
lomomike and yourself are correct. Our cars 2003 accord has an Air fuel (A/F) ratio sensor on B1S1 and Oxygen sensor on B1S2. Our V6 counter parts have B1S1/B2S1 as A/F ratio sensor and B1S2/B2S2 as Oxygen sensors.

There are 2 types of oxygen sensors that i know; normal oxygen and A/F ratio/Lambda sensors. Newer cars like ours have A/F ratio/Lambda sensors as precat and oxygen sensor as post cat. The 2 dont function exactly the same way so the scanner wont mistake one for the other. However, as long as you are on closed loop, the A/F sensor is fine. One other thing i have noticed is that i have live data on O2S1_WR_lambda Ratio and O2S1_WR_lambda I. So check for other sensor parameters other than oxygen sensor, you'll definitely have live data.

Take a look at the first parameter in the first sc shot, it says Oxygen sensors present, the number seem to be 1. The A/F sensor may function as a Lambda sensor but definitely not like an oxygen sensor. O2 sensors are displayed live by OBD II devices in voltages while A/F displays in Lambda = 1 for a perfect stoichiometric ratio. Lambda above 1 is lean and below is rich. The second data is live current data which is zero at stoic, lean when positive and rich when it shows negative. The A/F is a modification of O2 sensor. Thats why your scanner wont see your A/F sensor as an oxygen sensor. The O2 sensor is a narrow band and the A/F ratio/Lambda sensors are wide band O2 sensors. The latter is more accurate in reading oxygen contents than the former.

Does the car shift smoothly?(I mean the gearbox)
Up shift is good although not as good as my untempered 03 accord especially during hard acceleration. One thing i love about the 08 is the instantenous down shift with very little trottle effort. In my 03, you sometimes need a harder push on the trottle to have it downshit for acceleration. I feel its more of a design problem that a mechanical one. Not forgeting that the 03 trottle is drive by wire while 08 is electric. Electric is softer but its gear response to me is more of an advancement in technology.

The sound is unbelievable, you will be shocked. The valves are more quiet than my EOD that has never been opened.

There has been no permanent error code since the VTC actuator was changed and plug to the temp sensor 2 was put in order.

The only one that comes once a while and goes off itself is P0420 Catalyst efficiency below threshold. My EOD has that too but it goes off itself on both cars. Right now there is no error code.

Thanks so much. If only our mechanics can have access to service manuals, they will be better. I remember the mechanic who worked on the crankshaft struggling to align the intake and exhaust camshafts. I suggested the process in the service manual and he ignored me. I allowed him suffer as long as the end product will be the same. Surprisingly, when he had to reset the timing after taking the chain off, he followed my advice pinning the two camshafts in position at the camshaft position sensor side. He didnt know that the holes provided there were to fix them exactly in position while chain is being installed. Am sure he learned.

hmmm am so happy for you, at least ur problem is solved,

Thanks again. With regards to the cost of the engine job, it is relatively cheap except for labour especially the Abuja one. Whole camshaft plus VTC actuator is N6,500. Other ones are silicon gum and fuel while labour was N10,000.

The 2nd job was outside abj but the part was sourced in Abj. Crankshaft and bearing N25,000, silicon gum, fuel and labour N5,000. Labour was cut low because the whole job was considered unsuccessful and a mere waste of money and energy. This once suffered more since the took down the engine twice and worked even on sunday. I guess if they did set the oil pump well they would not have droped the engine the second time and would have earned more than what they got with better client and labour satisfaction. I will call and let them know of their mistake.

Put the total at N65,000 including yesterdays oil pump bearing, silicon gum, fuel and labour. Its acceptable compared to the N300,000 dealers have quoted for the engine.
Car Talk › Re: Advice Needed To Repair 2008 Honda Accord 2.4L by adanny01(op):
I didnt go to work so my friend asked me to help him fix coolant leakage at the thermostat housing. The engine oil was getting contaminated with ground metalic particles making the oil look strangely coloured. A different menchanic was used so i described our predicament. He listened very well and then squat on his knees to hear the bottom. He asked me for permission to open the bottom oil pan. I agreed knowing my friend will not be pleased i am encouraging him to spend more money after experienced people have given their virdicts.

The mechanic proceeded and discovered sludge of wearing .metal and the connecting rod end cap bolts were the ones a making contact with the oil pump balancer shafts at positions shown in the picture below. I thought whether Honda didnt think that those could meet hitting themselves but why it didnt happen before? They thought so thats why they had a procedure and markings for installing the pump just like that of timing. My little online search revealed that the mark on the oil pump sprocket should be around 7o'clock.while the engine is set at cylinder #1 TDC. That will effectively ensure the bolts will not hit the balancer. My previous mechanics obviously didnt know that and so they might have installed the pump with sprocket mark at 12o'clock just like the crank shaft would have been set at cylinder #1TDC. That was their gross mistake. I made an attempt to tell this mechanic, he said he knew very well how to set oil pump timing. He eventually did very well.

However, things didnt just go so smooth. I remembered the last mechanic saying that the oil pump had its own bearing and also had no explanation for the metalic stained oil pan and oil. I imagined that all the hits this oil pump took, something may have suffered. Just when the pump was to be reinstalled, i paused him and asked to inspect the pump myself. I shook the 1st balancer and was firm. I shook the 2nd and it was seriously gapped and wobbly. I called his attention. We discovered the bearings was almost totally worn probably due to the hit. Thats the source of ground metal in the engine oil and oil pan. That was 6pm, we were lucky to get it at Apo mechanic village.

Now, i cant tell you the huge relieve i have had. My friend had to verbarly express his gratitude for all my selfless sacrifice and comittment to solving his headache. My drive home was so sweet i maintained 140km/h with a/c cooling my nerves.

IdaraCHODB:
I really wish you the best in this endeavor because it can be done. At least you have got a service manual, what you need is someone who will follow it religiously.

The challenges include the near total absence of new OEM engine parts but used parts with guarantees not worth much, the time it takes to bring new OEM parts from outside the country, the cost of bringing them from outside, mechanics who will not listen to the voice of wisdom ( that is manufacturer service procedure), mechanics that feel that the cost of labour exceeds the money paid to perform the service and will deny them easy jobs that bring in much more to a difficult job that brings in so little profit, lack of a registry of certified engine rebuilders, to mention but a few.

If you look at it from the above lenses, you will see why Gazzuzz recommended as above, and now Cardoctor has done the same, and why most Nigerians prefer to replace the engine once and for all and be done with it.

Like I said it can be done, it will take your time, and your money, your patience, and your stress and your involvement.

Question is, at the end of the day, will it be worth it? The pain versus gain debate.

Following the thread quietly all along, but since you have got the passion, keep it up, you might be rewarded for all the stress!

If I were in your shoes, I would most likely have done the same.
I wish to thank you for the kind words of encouragement. Fortunately enough, it came on the day when finally unplanned success was made.

Finally, the engine can be revved up till the limitter kicks in. I never knew that the oil pump must be set in time. Meaning the there is a specific setting for oil pump at cylinder#1 TDC. I never looked at that part of the service manual and the mechanic who did the crank shaft job didnt know the exact setting too. So they messed up setting the oil pump to bump into cylinder #2 and 3.

I will explain further when get home.
Car Talk › Re: The Reason Why That Your Tokunbo Car Keeps Overheating Here In Nigeria by adanny01(m): 4:08pm On Jul 03, 2015
Macmilla:
Please pals, i have a car that has been running without thermostat. The check engine keeps coming up indicating "cooling system malfunction". After some research, I understood that the code signifies that the car is taking too long to warm up. That makes sense as the car has no thermostat.
So I tried to put in a thermostat into the housing and drove the car. After less than 5min of driving, my temperature gauge hit the red zone. When I opened the hood, the coolant in the radiator was boiling. BUT I noticed the thermostat housing barely got warm. If the housing is cold, the thermostat won't open and the fan switch won't trigger the fan, that is fast overheating for me. I removed the thermo again and the overheating dissappeared. Fan still runs intermittently, being controlled by the temperature in the housing.

The question now is, why didn't the water in the thermostat heat up with the engine? What are the possible causes?
Thanks
How sure are you that the thermostat you installed is a good one? If it is bad and stuck in close position your car will definitely overheat.

Water pump may be another cause.

Do a cylinder compression test to rule it out. You don't need any fancy tool, just buy a couple of sparkplug defoulers like 5 of them, bolt them up together, screw into sparkplug position place thumb over opening and u should be able to feel the bad one out with the engine running. (I know this is kazeemy)
I like it but my spirit is down right now with report coming in from my friends meeting with cardoctor. I am at work so couldnt go. Getting that size of defouler will be a big task.

His comments i expected will point the problem or kill the matter. He has opted to kill the matter by buying a new head or straight engine. Thats his position which i believe came out of much experience. All mechanics now say the same thing, retire the engine.

I dont want to give up but i cant give my friend assurances either. With the new decision, he has lost alot of money already. I wouldnt want to make him lose more.

However, i tried Piyke's improvised stethoscope thingy, just like i said before the sound is confirmed to be from the front (intake side) of the engine not the back (exhaust). The sound is obviously highest at the middle btween cylinder 2 and 3 and exactly at the position where the head gasket is.

I listened from that position at the front and back of the engine and the sound is incomparable with the front even not eaaily accessible because of the intake manifold but loudest. At the valve cover, everything is quiet and calm.

I am positively sure, 1 or 2 intake valves is hitting the piston of either cylinder 2 or 3. What i can do now is limited to checking the valve spring and lash for the two cylinders. Any more will incure expenses that i wont put my friend. Make im no think say i carry im car do experiment!

Using a wrong crankshaft could also cause same issues.

Check that they are same part number.

I'm sure it's not the valves touching the pistons.
Yes, i agree. I am not sure of the part number since i didnt check to confirm. Its too late to do that since the engine is running on it unless cardoctor who is our last consultant wants to get down there with assurance.

There are several reasons why i think is a valve hitting piston problem.

1. After the crankshaft was installed and engine assembled, there was a point engine did stop rotation. We didnt know what it was. Oil sump and pump were removed again and checked. Everything was ok but rotation will still stop after few turns. That was the 1st time the cylinder head came off on suspision that there is accumulated carbon deposits. It was true and carbon was cleared. The engine without the cylinder head rotated beautifully. The head was reinstalled and the rotation cycled with no obstruction. Upon starting, we got that sound. I felt that the new sound was the result of the initial obstruction to rotation which was only made less by decarbonizing. I figured there is still contact but not enough to stall rotation. Since the head came off and the engine block rotated beautifully, the problem is either on the head cylinder or in between it and the engine block not below.

2. Valve-piston contact is very possible because the engine is designed with very little space between them. Meaning, if timing chain breaks while valves are open and there is piston movement, contact will definately be made. I have experienced this about 4 times when timing belt of 96 accord broke. Valves were destroyed in te process. Other causes i have read include weak valve spring (i will check for this) and bad timing between camshaft and cranshaft.

Pardon me for lengthy descriptions.

If the bearings were mismatched it could be a problem, if the bearings were damaged on some cylinders and those were the only ones replaced it is better to replace all so they are worn evenly. That will take care of possibility of metal shavings in the near future. on top there is a video for valve adjustment the specs might not be what your mechanic is used to so he has to use the one written on the inside of the hood it has the spark plug spec and gap too if the valves are good and the cam lobes are right there should be no tapping.

Multiple misfire might be coil wires installed on wrong coil/cylinder it can happen

First let me inform you guys that i drove to Abuja safely with no new issues or increase in the sound. I tried my best to limit rpm to 2000 meaning i drove very slow ranging from 60 to 100km/h.

All bearings were changed. New ones are not available for this engine anywhere in Apo, Zuba, Kaduna or Jos that we made contacts trying to source it. The installed crank shaft was taken from a donor engine in Zuba mechanic village looking almost new with serial no and bar code sticker on its counter weight. There were 2 stickers on it and the journals were guaged before purchase. It came complete and exactly like the one removed with the pulse plate and all its accessories. I didnt take a shot as it was 5pm on saturday and i wanted work to begin immediately as the guy threatened to shut down till monday.

I wasnt around the two times he claimed to have adjusted valves. Valves are not that noisy anyway. I have the car's service manual which i printed the page and gave the guy for the right feeler guage. Whether he used it, i dont know. Plugs are not spec since what i saw there is champion plugs. I feel the plugs may not be that bad to cause a misfire. The misfire is not permanent and occurs mostly when engine is started after it was worked on.

Coil wires cannot be installed on another cylinder because it is fixed and cant extend to another cylinder.

The file was bigger than 250kb.

I made a shorter recording as attached. I am sure the top cylinder is quiet likewise the crankshaft area.

Piyke:
Can you pin-point where this sound is coming from? You may need a car stethoscope to this or improvise with a piece of tubing (the type you use for putting petrol in a gas tank); one end near your ear while the other end is moved round the engine until you get where the noise is loudest.
From what you've described (sound increasing with RPM), try to rule out a worn bearing eg in the power steering pump or any of those parts connected to the serpentine belt.
The engine misfire may be unconnected to the noise.
I cant pin point where the sound is coming from. I saw a mention of the stethoscope but thought i cant access it. The only idea i have is that the sound seems to eminate from the centre of the engine. The location seems to be at the head cylinder gasket positon around cylinder 3. The car revs very smooth except for just that single sound. Something tells me a valve is making contact with the piston and it seem to be getting worst. One coincidence is that after the engine started this last time, i got P0303 meaning there is a problem in that cylinder. One of the causes of misfire is loss of compression. A mistimed valve will cause loss of compression to that cylinder and can make contact with the piston if there is something wrong.

I have ruled out worn bearing since this one is constant while bearing is not. Power steering is far from it as it whines not repeated tapping. Other ones on the serpenting belt will most likely rattle.

My friend made an appointment with Cardoctor. However, the car is 200km from abj, i hope it will take me there.

I tried to upload the sound i recorded but it wont upload.

Its been long since i wrote an update.

We are at a point where we are all lost including the mechanic. I feel like i let my friend down.

The car was with a mechanic since Friday till yesterday tuesday. In the period the engine came off the engine bay twice and the engine was openned thrice.

Let me review the chain of faults from begining. 1st problem was Camshaft noise at cold start. It was changed then a new sound that was mildly there became louder. Crankshaft noise at 2700rpm and above.

It took 2days of serching to get an unworn crankshaft in Abuja. The old crankshaft was guaged and the new one too. The new one had all main bearings journals same guage and cylinder journals also same. The old one had cylinder journal 1, 3 and 4 less than 2.

New crankshaft was installed but after timing was set and everything was ready to return to engine bay, one last engine free rotation was ran but it failed. The process went backwards head cylinder removed this time. Alot of carbon was cleared. After coupling and installing. The engine started at first kick with a smooth run devoid of noise from either the crankshaft or camshaft. However, there was a new tapping sound as if 2 rotating parts that are not suppose to meet are touching each other. The sound is constant from idle to the highest rpm you can get. The sound is constant in intensity but increase in frequency directly proportional to rpm. Check engine light was misfire P0303 and P0304, cylinder 3 and 4.

For the misfire, i felt it was loss of compression in those cylinders due to exhaust valve leak as a result of carbon build up. Or, the carbon build up in one valve may have contributed in the valve not closing all the way making contact with piston.

From here i left for work till yesterday evening. They claim to have dropped engine again, attempted to change gasket but later didnt and grounded valves. We were happy after start with no sound at idle, after a drive around the sound came back fully.

We are now confused and mechanic is exhausted.

I find it funny that people easily forget and wonder why Bukola Saraki shouldnt be a force to reckon with.

He in his own right can match Tinubu pound for Pound as regards political office, experience and godfatherism.

Tinubu profile vs Sarakis Profile

As Governors

Tinubu : Lagos state governor 1999-2007 (two terms)

Saraki : Kwara state governor 2003-2011 (two terms)

As Senators

Tinubu : Senator 1992

Saraki: Senator 2011-date

Home state influence

Tinubu : Installed successor and lawmakers

Saraki : Also installed successor and lawmakers

Educational Experince

Tinubu : Account huh

Saraki: Medical Doctor

Addition to Saraki's expericence

- SA to former president obasanjo on budget 2000

-Former Chairman Governors forum.

And people expect this man to bow to Tinubu

Please what does Tinubu want to show or impress saraki with to demand control on him?
Trash.

Tinubu installed current Vice president.
Saraki installed himself destroying the party in the process

Tinubu brought ACN party into APC which was the third biggest party in Nigeria.
Saraki brought votes limited to Kwara state alone.

You cant compare CV's when politics is about personality and influence. Has Tinubu done anything to bring APC to disrepute? No. Tinubu shelfed his VP ambition for the interest of the party due to the Muslim Muslim ticket. Saraki created chaos in the party in refusing to shelf his personal ambition for the party. Who sounds like a humble leader to you.

I hate the name Saraki for bringing down the party of change which i believe and hope in. I wish APC will just close their eyes to any consequence and just expel Saraki. His followers of like minds can join him. They can go join PDP from whence they came from. APC should concentrate on delivering good governance and see how PDP will fail one last time come 2019.

Who has seen this before. I have seen it so many times mostly from new fake ball joints in which their stud breaks.

I can risk buying fake upper arms and tie rod ends but would not risk buying low grade or fake lower arm (camber) ball joint. unfortunately it is the cheapest of the lot whether oem new, fake or toks. It is also the main culprit followed by tie rod end.
