Elementary physics: What is a thermostat?
Make i give you expo!

Automotive
Main article: Wax thermostatic element

Car engine thermostat
Perhaps the most common example of purely mechanical thermostat technology in use today is the internal combustion engine cooling system thermostat, used to maintain the engine near its optimum operating temperature by regulating the flow of coolant to an air-cooled radiator. This type of thermostat operates using a sealed chamber containing a wax pellet that melts and expands at a set temperature. The expansion of the chamber operates a rod which opens a valve when the operating temperature is exceeded. The operating temperature is determined by the composition of the wax. Once the operating temperature is reached, the thermostat progressively increases or decreases its opening in response to temperature changes, dynamically balancing the coolant recirculation flow and coolant flow to the radiator to maintain the engine temperature in the optimum range. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermostat

Elementary physics: What is a thermostat?
You want me to teach you? OK lets go.

Thermostat is a temperature control device that maintains temperature at a preset point.

Let me play with ur intelligence a little.

There are 3 pictures attached. The first is of a typical car thermostat (hope you've seen it before), the 2nd is of a typical car temp sensor and the 3rd is a typical car cooling fan.

Q1. Is the first an electrical, mechanical or electromechanical device?
Q2. Is the second an electrical, mechanical or electromechanical device?
Q3. Is the third an electrical, mechanical or electromechanical device?
Q3. Which among the first two devices can be connected by means of electrical connection that can control the third?
Q4. Explain means by which 1 and 3 can be connected directly or indirectly?

You wan do elementary Physics, abeg answer while i remain glued to my PC to see your reply.

A thermometer or temperature sensor picks temperature values depending on the state of the engine. The regional/enviroment temperature is inclusive.

For example, i noticed that the thermostat activate the fan quicker in the hot sun compared to early morning cold start.
The thermostat understand its work perfectly, at heavy traffic, the fan picks up immediately as if it was directly connected
The thermostat does not control the operation of the fan. The coolant temperature sensor and ECU (brain box) actually does. The thermostat only stops water flow at cold start so the temperature can climb up quickly. After that, its work is done unless the temperature drops less that the specified on the thermostat usually between 70-90 degrees Celsius.

In a lay man terms I will make this easier for us

Tropicalization of cars

The climate conditions vary severely across the globe and car manufacturers previously made cars for specific countries based on their climate conditions without realizing that with globalization the cars do get exported out from the country where it was originally meant for sale in.

Cars made in Europe used to be designed for European climate which were cooler and dryer than sub tropical Asian countries where temperatures can exceed 40C and have humidity over 80%. The direct impact of exporting a car designed for the European climate to Asia meant that the cars were not able to function at its best. There were many examples of cases where the cars would over heat as the cooling system was not suitable for the sub tropical climate. The radiators were far too small and other components were not able to cope with the high humidity leading to premature failure. Some BMWs, Alfa Romeos and Audis that were imported to Asia from Germany or UK struggled to cope with the heat. Many of these cars could barely travel 100km across an Asian city without overheating.

Some interior components also started to fade and peel off as the coatings and linings were meant for dry climate conditions.
The car manufacturers only realized this in the late 1990s and started to do global scale testing during the development phase.

Things involved in tropicalizing a vehicle:
1. Paint - either repaint or try a good paint sealant.
2. Rubbers and Plastics (e.g. weather strips, dashboard, plastic bumpers, trimmings, etc.) - replace weather strips with tropicalized ones. Other plastic parts may require painting.
3. Cooling system/ Radiator Size/ Fan, etc. - Replace radiator as necessary or replace fan that has higher air flow.

Start with the paint. Its the most expensive part. Next is the cooling system. Then just observe first the other rubber and plastic parts and replace as necessary. Some might not need replacing immediately.
I made a simple research online to get the extreme temperatures in the US. I got a highest of 56.7 °C and lowest of −62.1 °C according to wikipedia. Compared to the highest recorded temperature in Nigeria 47.2 °C, the lowest is beyond comparison. By this there is no temperature in Nigeria that cannot be found in the US. Why would i modify a car made in US based on temperature or humidity? It is pointless and baseless.
Car Talk › Re: The Reason Why That Your Tokunbo Car Keeps Overheating Here In Nigeria by adanny01(m): 10:29am On May 15, 2015
Cooling system: this is mostly left untouched, though the thermostat in the engine bay could be set to activate the fans/water pumps at a lower temperature than that abroad seeing that we do not need a long warming up period after cold starts, and our warm weather means our engines heat up faster in use than in cold weather.
tonychristopher:
What is the function of thermostat in a car ....tell us before we argue the relevancy or don't you believe it tropicalization
You made major misconceptions on how the thermostat operates in relationship with the cooling fan.

In fact, the thermostat has no direct or indirect connection to the cooling fans especially the electrical ones. You should know that the thermostat is completely a mechanical device while the electric cooling fan is an electromechanical device. There is no physical connection by switch or wire between them. Therefore, the thermostat does not control the function of the cooling fan.

The cooling fan is controlled by coolant temperature sensor, ECU, Relay in that communication order. The temp sensor sends the correct temperature of the coolant to the ECU which has a preset temp if reach triggers the relay to switch on the fans. After which the temp drops to acceptable zone the the ECU communicates the relay to stop. The process happens intermittently as temp fluctuates due to many factors such as engine load, speed (related to amount of air cooling), ambient temperature etc non of which relates to thermostat but depending on the coolant temp sensor. Note that both could be housed in the same location in the system but independent of each other.

On the functions of the thermostat, you have been answered.

Wrong.

A car with thermostat removed and fan running steadily but with a bad water pump will still overheat. A car with bad radiator cap will overheat even with quadruple cell radiator and quadruple fans spinning non stop.
Please tell him again and again till he understands.

What do they mean by blame FG? are they not the same. Imagine fuel no goes for 130 to 150 per litre. If they had removed to crazy subsidy by then we would be buying fuel at this same current high price back then and by now it would have dropped drastically as more competition would have emerged and fuel would be every where. We are waiting!!!!
What if marketers gang up and refuse to import? The the Nigerian economy crumbles like a pack of cards. There has to be safe resort (our own refineries) to protect the economy from saboteurs. Regulations and control mechanisms set in place. Without that, we will continue to buy fuel at the mercy of marketers and their suppliers.

They are scared Buhari won't honor the remaining subsidy payment...they now resorted GEJ pay them in full before leaving office!!! No wonder they paid illiterates and cows to protest when subsidy was removed.

The problem of Nigeria are the Politicians and the Richs!!!!
I agree with you on everything except the bolded part. Am not sure you understand the fundamentals of the subsidy fraud by your statement in bold.

The subsidy fraud is by the politicians and the rich who manipulate the government to condone the corruption. Is subsidy bad for the economy, in truth, no? The corruption in the system is what is bad for the economy not the subsidy itself. Removing the subsidy wont ever end the corruption in the system but it is morally wrong for any government to embark. Who will now pay for the corruption, Nigerians. Who is responsible for the corruption government. SO if the Government are responsible for the corruption they are responsible for the failure of subsidy and must not make Nigerians suffer for their inabilities.

A responsible government will first of all remove corruption from the system, maintain and build new refineries only then will they remove subsidy. It is governments failure so they should deal with it and not shift the load to poor Nigerians. You cant infect your wife with HIV and divorce her for being infected.

Waec skipped a letter in my first name which now appears to be an initial.

My 1st name is Aninta
Waec spelled it Anin a

I graduated and went for NYSC with it. The process of correction as informed by waec was complicated so i abandoned. They said i cannot apply for correction directly but the exams officer of the school must write. Since certificate has been issued, i have to pay full charges of a reprint.

Between 650-750 RPM. If u are having irrational idling then u might want to perform an idle learn procedure for Honda, that is provided u have not altered the factory settings.
Mine (03) idles at exactly 800rpm on average at operating temp and 1500rpm when cold.

The only time it comes around 700-750 is when gear is engaged but remains around 800 with a/c or any other electrical load.

When my ECU was disconnected which i believe reset it, the car idled very rough at between 650-950 and mostly around 700. The gear shift was affected but later everything settled out which i believe the ECU had relearned its settings.

Am concluded that the idle rpm should be 800. Mind you, i believe there is no idle speed adjustment on this car since the ECU controls it, so if you have higher or lower, there is problem like an intake leak

You may not need. You only need when you are expecting some increased stresses such as that of large volume of backfill or as a result of unleveled land profile. Other factors may require the engineer from his judgment to introduce beams and columns.

Btw, that's what we've been shouting. Remove subsidy and let's manage the situation till our refineries are put in place by Nigeria engineers. We have the skills and resources. Fuel subsidy must go and that's the only 'something' Buhari can do about the oil cartel.

Naija must be great osmiley
There is one thing that i believe you missed.

Assume an analogy like this, you make an order for bread for your family. The supplier brings the bread asking for N500 per loaf when the originlal price is N300, you say the price is high, your family who will eat it must pay for it by themselves.

Now, the main question is, will the supplier sell to your family at N300 after you refused?

We cant ask our government to remove subsidy, because we will directly pay for it. In this case we ask them to check the system tighten it up so that marketers wont just be adding up fake unverified scam claims and getting paid for supplying nothing like its been done now.

Hi guys,

My Honday EOD is showing key maintenance required on the dash board and it does hard start.
What could be wrong?
Pls ur candid advise. no insults
They are not related to each other. The key is related to your immobilizer while the maintance required is what it says it is.

The key should normally come on go off when you turn ignition to on (II) and will flash 5x if you return to position I.

The maintenance required is a counter that helps you count when next your engine oil change is due. It counts mileage and i think 7500miles or so. It will flash a couple of times when key is turned to position II. By 10,000miles it comes on steady. To reset, press and hold the instrument panel control knob then turn ignition to position II while holding the knob for atleast 10secs.

Car Talk › Re: DIY: PCV System Check And PCV Valve Replacement 03 Accord I4 by adanny01(m):
IdaraCHODB:
I had a nasty experience with the same manufacturer.

I replaced my fuel pump with a brand new Denso.

Then decided to replace the fuel pump housing with a Beck Arnley.

So everything would be new and work like a charm or so I thought!

Now you may be aware that the fuel pump housing has come electrical connections in some vehicles for reading the fuel gauge etc.

While driving, at speeds much in excess of 90 km/hr, the car acted like the ignition wires were not receiving current, and like there was a fuel cut-off or speed limiter or like the fuel pump was dying or the fuel lines were clogged, suddenly everyone I had overtaken and dusted started overtaking me, for the fuel to flow I had to reduce my speed to less than 80km/hr.

So what could have been wrong? Brand new fuel pump and brand new fuel filter and brand new fuel pump housing?

So I sought professional help and I was given varying answers such as a dying fuel pump; a clogged fuel tank requiring dismantling and washing; clogged fuel filter or replacement of my ignition wires.

I was not too certain they were right, so I decided to take a look myself.

I personally inspected the fuel pump, fuel filter and fuel pump housing, and discovered that the unit ( fuel pump housing) had started melting and the wires were of extremely substandard quality and had started burning and shorting, so I removed it and replaced with the OEM unit I had earlier removed and the vehicle came back from coma.

The scenario above has not repeated itself, no matter was speed I drive since then, if I ask for fuel, the fuel pump has never failed me

After market quality is sometimes a gamble. OEM quality is nearly always a given.
You see, thats why many Nigerians resort to tokumbo aka Belgium (foreign used). Some of these used oem parts come with some life left off them while others may come dead on arrival. They are still better than those chinco that have become a threat to life.

There are certain areas the aftermarket stuff does help but not suspension and power train parts. I remember buying a $3 with free shipping honda key shell that is fulfilling its purpose when there is the oem that is very expensive like the one on konga that goes for N7,000.

Who will ever know that this 1yr after market chinco less than N500 key shell does same thing like the N7,000 one sold on Konga.

A designer suit can be gotten for as low as 25k while a designer wedding gown starts from atleast 70k. The suit can be an every day clothing after 1st use while the wedding gown can only be worn once in a lifetime.

How can one justify lets say 100k for a wedding gown that will be used for a day to a 25k suit that can be worn twice or more times a month for up to 5 years or more. The gown can only be rented out by the owner after use or sold back with so much depreciation.

My own case is the one that English people say 'let sleeping dogs lie'.

I met this young girl at my friend's wedding, i was a groom's man while she was a bride's maid. The groom was a pastor, he tried to keep us far from the girls while the bride knowing her friends too tried to keep us away. Affinity between bride's maids and groom's men is stronger than a magnet to metal that i hooked up to this young girl. We were catching up the following day and she mentioned she would be by my place the next day. She came, the stage was set for action before she paused to tell me, 'I am a virgin o'. In my mind i said, 'i just met you 2 days ago and you are about to sleep in my place, how come such a girl is a virgin?'.

I told her i dont do virgins so no action today (seriously, virgins freak me out). Thats when the story changed a little bit. She proceeded, that she's been pregnant before! I said, 'WHAT!'. Are you Mary second mother of Jesus and where is the child? She said she aborted, but she is honest that she never had successful intercourse. The guy tried to penetrate her but was unsuccessful and he finally released his fertilizer all over her v area. A month later she was found pregnant.

I was listening with rapt attention and had forgotten my mission while my little Johnson was dozing. I am a good listener so i didn't want her to feel bad or anything so i told her it was all alright and cuddled her then every emotion resumed from where we left off. Any way, she was as tight as a virgin that i tore 3 condoms without successful entry, na Vaseline finally pop the lollipop.

I never believed her story and she still insist i disvirgined her. Thats how i left sleeping dogs lying since that time. Abeg make my virgin of a wife no hear this story o, she go kill me, cos she thought i was a virgin like her!

Meanwhile is that hymen for real, cos i never see am o! Lest i forget, another girl wei claim virginity gave me my best head till date. Actually, Vaseline and a whole night of attempt no see success with this one o!

The preferred walking speed is the speed at which humans or other animals choose to walk. In the absence of significant external factors, humans tend to walk at about 1.4 m/s (5.0 km/h; 3.1 mph).[1][2][3] Although humans are capable of walking at speeds upwards of 2.5 m/s (9.0 km/h; 5.6 mph)
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preferred_walking_speed

Assumption 1: 5km/h walking speed which can be more
Assumption 2: takes off each day 6am and rest by 12noon continue by 1pm stop for the day 6pm. That gives 10hrs of walk.

5km/h x 10hrs = 50km everyday

778km ÷ 50km = 15.56 days to complete

He spent 19 days out of which i learnt he spent 2 in Niger state not walking.

So he walked in 17days actually. That means he was even slower than expected.

So he probably started walking 6am took 2hr break from 12noon to 2pm and stopped 6pm.

This gives 45km everyday to complete in 17.3 days.

All is very possible and with better stamina, could have done better.
