abatically:I will try. Thanks. |
nissparts:What do you suggest? That in spite of the alarming poverty rate in Nigeria we should still spend fortunes on maintenance. If it was affordable buying the whole CAT will be preferable. I used to think only Nigerians want things cheap, i have seen worst especially my white boss. My connection is very bad leading to the double post, sorry. |
nissparts:I would have, but where and 5k for something that may or may not work. I have asked on a post above who knew where and got no answers. I got tired of looking for it even showing them pictures, most part dealers had no idea. The fabrication parts and labour isnt more than 1k. Besides "Cheapest Way To Deal With P0420?" is the thread's title. |

Emperoh:Yes, i think you got that right on the 0420 and 0430. Spark plugs is what i changed. |
sempeman:is the steering working normal, i mean soft? Is it worst in the morning and reduce much later when the car is hot? |

UPDATE!!! Over the weekend, as i was thinking of what to use to fabricate the O2 spacer, i thought of changing my spark plugs since i had a hunch they are not so good. I checked the exhaust tube and intake air leaks as guided from the list below. Possible causes - Three way catalyst converter Bank 1 - Exhaust tube - Intake air leaks - Fuel injectors may be faulty - Fuel injector leaks *Spark plugs may be faulty* - Improper ignition timing - Engine Control Module (ECM) Then i changed the spark plugs, and my mileage improved from my 110mile trip this morning and no CEL for over 200miles so far. I am still watching and in a couple of days if the CEL does not come back, then i shall conclude the spark plugs are responsible for the P0420. I have suspended the fabrication but had already purchased a 16mm torque wrench attachment to weld onto a 22mm nut to fit the O2 sensor. The next thing was to buy the 22mm nut, weld and thread the other end. Pic below show; 1. and 2. 16mm torque wrench attachment 3. O2 sensor with probe in the socket wrench 4. Red arrow shows where i will cut away to reduce the space the sensor will be away from exhaust flow. The yellow arrow shows the extend of treading which is about the same with where the probe end will be and the blue arrow shows where the welded nut will be. Dont mind the worn thread on the O2, it is an old bad one. My major challenge was to be the threading and the thickness of the attachment. Any ideas?

I have been watching a lot of youtube videos suggesting to wash CAT with lacquer (Thinner) and others with just soapy water. Cant seem to find an obvious working method of getting the CAT working up to threshold. Though I got the fact that the P0420 comes up when the CATs efficiency drops by as low as 5%. That means that the CAT is not entirely bad but has started degrading. The check light is annoying so the need to get it out. I have not seen a better and easy solution like the installation of the spacer. Getting one has been a challenge same as the present economic conditions. I have also found out from one of the videos that to check that the CAT is still working there should be about 100 degree Fahrenheit difference at the inlet and outlet of the CAT tested with an infrared thermometer. I wish i could have access to one. |

speed001:P1135 Toyota P1135 Toyota - Air/Fuel Ratio Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction Bank 1 Sensor 1 Read more: http://engine-codes.com/p1135_toyota.html#ixzz3Oyc9bKgF You will hardly get a new oem sensor or if you get it will be expensive. Honda has Denso sensors factory installed. If you are in Abj i can refer you to a mechanic who told me yesterday that he has both the Air/fuel sensor and the O2 sensor. However, they may not be working since he removed from a car or may not be the exact replacement for your car. Honda uses Denso 234-9040 Air Fuel Ratio Sensor or NGK 24803 Air- Fuel Ratio Sensor for pre CAT(Bank 1 Sensor 1) and Denso 234-4797 Oxygen Sensor or NGK 24412 Oxygen Sensor post CAT (Bank 1 Sensor 2). There is an opinion i have read that says not to use Bosch or universal sensors, just Denso or NGK so beware. Compare these with you car if it match, we get him. |
Emperoh:Its going to be 24hrs soon. Waiting! |
The funny thing about this list is that there are 6 people with PhD's while only Jonathan has his field written. Again, all the qualifications are just written , why has Namadi's own with Arch after it. It is totally obvious that in the list, only PDP candidates have their specializations listed and for what purpose? |
My tradition demands that the groom is expected to buy assorted boxes of wrappers, shoes and bags etc, this may be the best area to assist if at all your tradition demands the same. My wife helped me buy some of the wrappers from the list likewise my sisters, mum and cousin sisters. Unfortunately for me and my wife, after our wedding the whole boxes were stolen at our house by arm robbers. It was a fortune lost. All those Jugde, Super wax, Hollandis, shedda materials lost. The main bride price should be left to him as a matter of pride. |
Piyke:Yes i guess eventually i must. Instead of that i will fit a test pipe with an O2 space fabricated on it as i have read. The hollow section of empty CAT may not be a good thing for the engine and a straight pipe is recommended instead. For now, i want to try the spacer and if it fails, then the straight pipe thingy. For now, most mechanics i have asked have no idea that a spacer of that dimension exist. Thats because most spark plugs threads are same but the nut are either 19 or 21mm while the O2 sensor has a bigger threading with 22mm. With the new $ exchange rates, the spacer is too expensive to make an orders. I think i can fabricate the spacer by welding a 22mm nut to a fitting pipe and having the other pipe threaded to correspond to the CAT O2 hole. It shouldn't cost more than 1k for labour and parts. |
How does that stop police from taking bribes on the highway? When i tell some people this man is clueless they see me as an enemy. Buhari, come and jail those bribe taking police officers jare! GEJ continues to fall my hand. |
lomomike:I think you need to take every thing including the car if you are buying a used one. You have to install and scan live data before you pay, thats how i did it. Both sensors are hard to unscrew, an Oxy Acetylene Welder may have to preheat. |
lomomike:I bought my car with a P1157 Air/Fuel Ratio Sensor 1 Range/Performance Problem but i got a used one in Apo mech village for N3,000 and has been working well. From live scan you should know for sure that the two sensors are not live. Am sure you will get it with those in Apo who sell exhaust parts except if you are after new oem, them your search will be stressful. |
abatically:Please if you bought in Abj let me know where so i can buy tomorrow. |
I only recently got this code P0142 on my 2.4 '03 Honda Accord which refers to the Catalytic converter being below threshold. In simple terms this code means the CAT is almost gone and the result is a constant unicode lit CEL. I now realized that the code is trouble for a Nigerian who likes to keep a car running close to manufacturers recommendation. It takes 1-3 or something like 100miles or above to have the light back after clearing the code with the OBD II tool. I must mention to those who do not know that apart from the lit CEL, high fuel consumption is inevitable in tolerating this code. To properly fix the code i understand one needs a new OEM CAT which is not affordable to me. Getting a used one like most mechanics advise is also tricky since a good buy cannot be determined at the point of purchase. Like i stated above, it may take up to 3 or more days before i know the used CAT i purchased is still good or not. Even if it is good for a week to a month, how much longer can i be guaranteed? (Question 1: Is there a way i will know from live data?) Nigeria does not have the laws to compel me to keep my CAT according to factory spec. I have attempted to install a spark plug defouler but the locally sourced one does not fit to size and cannot be installed. I do get live data so i assume the sensor is good. The solution like i have read is to install an O2 spacer of spark plug defouler that will fit. However, getting that locally is a challenge. (Question 2: Can i get any of that in ABJ and where if you know?) I have started entertaining a thought of fabricating the spacer. (Question 3: What is the best dimensions for this spacer) Seina did mention on an old thread that a straight pipe would work better in the event you would like to gut out the CAT. (Question 4: At this early stage of the CAT failure, should i just do the straight pipe thing to avoid getting back to the same code in the near future?) Question 5: What other advice do i need to attempt getting off with the code. Please the best procedure must be cheap for me to afford without spending a fortune. Ikenna, you did something like this though probably on a Peugeot which i know a Honda emissions system will be harder to fool but your experience is needed too.

dejavume:Do you know what the international fellow means? "The International Fellows Program is a two-semester seminar open to students of all graduate degree programs at Columbia University. The diverse perspectives and professional backgrounds that fellows bring to the program enrich their year-long common enterprise." |
chukwudi44:He forged certificates to enlist in the Nigerian Army! Do you know what that insinuation makes the Nigerian Army? |
tit:Its either you are playing dumb or you are actually dumb. Does your research into the term 'fellow' as shown above relate to the context of their use of the terms 'International fellow' with regards to a class of 1980? Now look at this link https://sipa.columbia.edu/international-fellows-program Quote from paragraph 2 of the above the link "The International Fellows Program is a two-semester seminar open to students of all graduate degree programs at Columbia University. The diverse perspectives and professional backgrounds that fellows bring to the program enrich their year-long common enterprise." With this definition, does this have any relation to the mischievous definitions you offered. Next you will be looking for definition to the word Seminar as mentioned above. Get a life! tit:Do you know what a court affidavit is? Why is it that a person unconfirmed age can be recognized by a simple affidavit and not a school certificate that the Nigerian Army can testify to have seen? |
Piyke:No, i wont. By my understanding of the youtube videos i watched, its obvious that is not needed. By getting the P0142 does not mean the CAT is out of use but below threshold. The O2 spacer is to take the sensor away from the exhaust flow stream which makes the O2 detect a little more of oxygen and would seem a normal reading after the cat system produces less. Taking out the cat entirely would not help since the spacer will not be able to get some supply of O2. If the spacer fails to clear the code i will consider buying a used one. However, its a challenge to buy a used one since even as expensive as it is being sold, you will have to drive atleast 100miles to know if your purchase is good enough not to produce the P0142. By that time my brothers in the mechanic wont take it back unless that dealer is too good. For now, i will look to order the spacer from Amazon. |
Piyke:I successfully unscrewed the O2 sensor this afternoon. However, the spark plug defouler would not fit in it while the threaded section of the defouler is smaller than the hole in the exhaust. I ran a live scan after that with RPM at 3000 and the B1S2 voltage steadied at around 0.6volts. The range at idle was between 0.1-0.9 volts but sometimes passing 0.9 but not up to 1.0. See the max at the red marker in the screen shot below.
|
Piyke:Thanks and yes the cel came back after being cleared 4 times. Each time took at least 50miles to come back. |
Impressive! You will get from my post on the water-in-ecu episode that i got the dreaded P0420 right after. I have decided to try installing the spark plug defouler inplace of the O2 sensor spacer in attempt to clear the code and eliminate the resultant open loop. I dont know were to get the spacer locally and the defouler is cheap. My challenge is that my mechanic couldnt get the sensor loose. I will make a second attempt tomorrow but my fear is that the sensor may get damaged in the process of losing. |
Macmilla:P0730 - Incorrect Gear Ratio Possible causes - Low transmission fluid level - Dirty transmission fluid - Shift solenoids - Transmission mechanical problems - Transmission hydraulic control circuit Check fluid level first then clean the solenoids with carb clearner. If you still have the problem, change the solenoid and try again. |
henchamb:When i saw that Nnamdi Azikiwe Nigeria's president 1960-1966 i began to get confused of my knowledge of history. When i know the head of state was the Queen till 1963. Were they 3, Prime minister, president and head of state? Then i saw General Saninegeria Mohammed Abacha Then i saw General Atiku Alhaji Abubakar An lastly the picture. If we had a government someone will be publicly fired for incompetance. Lets wait an see the lies Abati will tell or the flimsy excuse he will give probably that even in America such mistakes thrive. |
