Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab's teacher, family dismayed, shocked at recent terror attempt aboard Flight 253

LAGOS, Nigeria -- A Nigerian man who tried and failed to blow up a plane over Detroit "sneaked" into his native country the day before his botched Christmas Day attempt, leaving his father shocked and regretful, Nigeria's information minister said Sunday.

Information Minister Dora Akunyili told reporters Sunday that Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab passed through Nigeria for only one day before attempting to blow up a Northwest flight headed for Detroit via Amsterdam.

"The man in question has been living outside of the country for a while," she said. "He sneaked into Nigeria on the 24th of December 2009 and left the same day."

She did not elaborate or say where Abdulmutallab entered Nigeria or where he had lived previously. Nigerian officials said Saturday that they would launch their own investigation into the incident and cooperate with U.S. investigators. She said Abdulmutallab's father, a top banker, had previously warned U.S. officials about his son's activities.

"The father, Alhaji Umar Mutallab, who is a responsible and respected Nigerian, with a true Nigerian spirit, had earlier reported his concern about his son's activities to relevant American authorities," she said. "The father has already expressed deep shock and regret over his son's actions."

On Saturday, U.S. officials charged Abdulmutallab with trying to destroy the plane. A conviction on the charge could bring Abdulmutallab up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

One of Abdulmutallab's former teacher said he was shocked to hear the news. He said on Sunday that Abdulmutallab was so well-respected in high school that classmates nicknamed him "the Pope."

But Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab also showed signs of inflexibility, said Michael Rimmer, a Briton who taught history at the British International School in Lome, Togo.

He said that, in a 2001 discussion about the Taliban in Afghanistan, Abdulmutallab was the only one to defend their actions — something he attributed at the time to a desire to play the devil's advocate.

He also noted that during a school trip to London, Abdulmutallab became upset when the teacher took students to a pub and said it wasn't right to be in a place where alcohol was being served.

Rimmer said that overall, his impression of Abdulmutallab had been an extremely positive one — noting in particular an incident in which the youngster chose to give 50 pounds to an orphanage rather than spend it on souvenirs in London.

"At one stage, his nickname was 'The Pope,'" Rimmer said. "In one way it's totally unsuitable because he's Muslim, but he did have this saintly aura.

"In all the time I taught him we never had cross words," Rimmer said from London in a telephone interview. "Somewhere along the line he must have
met some sort of fanatics, and they must have turned his mind."

Rimmer described the institution — an elite college preparatory school in the West African country, attended by children of diplomats and wealthy Africans — as "lovely, lovely environment" where Christians often joined in Islamic feasts and some of the best Christmas carolers were Muslims.

Abdulmutallab showed no signs of intolerance toward other students, Rimmer said, explaining that "lots of his mates were Christians."

The Briton noted that he has not seen or heard from his former pupil since 2003, when he was about 15, but added that other students had been in touch to express their shock.

The Caption of the picture you posted as "Another Governor with his 4th wife", says nothing about the "woman" being a 4th wife and in fact, it wasn't the Governor at all!

The Caption of the picture (right below the Picture) says: Director General for Media & Strategy TO Niger state Governor, Malam Danladi Ndayebo and His Bride!

Where on earth was it written that she was the 4th bride?
Where on earth did a D.G suddenly metamorphose into a Guv'nor?

I don’t know how many Chinese that were surveyed to arrived at such a claim but its very important that is why I asked and response is to abuse me with your Oprah Winfred/Dr Phil taunt.
Because you quoted a psychologist rating what inspired Chinese to get married and disagreed because I personally don’t think that Chinese a strange to be inspired to fall in love with someone and marry them. You can disagree but you don’t have to abuse me

Before we get sidetracked, this issue is about how you have  insisted that polygamy should be banned because it's responsible for  the spread of HIV/AIDS and you are saying that Uganda has made progress in fighting the disease without backing it up with  a peer reviewed journal/study that supports your position
I made mention of China, Nigeria and the US in that ranking and you ran way with China. 3 things are possible.
1. You don't believe  that it's a fact-  its your right to do so , but you should provide me with a different source to solidify your position. “I don't believe in that” doesn't win arguments, facts do.
2 You have not read this text book, why do you challenge the  credibility of  a study you know little about?
3.Facts about this study. 9,000  young adults in their mid 20s who lived in 37 different countries were surveyed by researchers (Buss,1994; Buss et al., 1990). Subjects were given a list of 32 traits and asked to rank the traits  from most to least desirable in a potential partner.

I have not intentionally abused you in anyway, I was alluding to the fact that not everybody subscribes to the western notion of love as Oprah and Dr Phil present on their shows.

Yes, the issue is not about you or anybody in particular, but it will be interesting to know where you ranked love before you get married your own wife. What was o top of your rating, instead ranking the Chinese or others. If I questioned the blanket ranking of the Chinese and others, I don’t think I will question yours because it is coming straight from your mouth. So, it is not really about you. Really.

This is a total contradiction from your stated position that your assimilation and understanding of marriage should apply to everyone. This contracts your earlier assertions that polygamy is the same thing as promiscuity. Would knowing my opinion change your mind that we should not foist on others our beliefs?

I am glad that you mentioned about the failing marriage rate in the West. It solidifies my argument because most people do not put love on top before going into marriage, for the reason that “REAL LOVE” never fails. It can be weakened with time and then can also be reinvigorated and the West is not an exception to failure to rank love on top of the equation.

This is another contradiction that no type of marriage is perfect. Why would  advocate for ban on polygamy knowing very well  that your cherished and espoused monogamy has 50% survival rate in the west? Isn't  this an admission  of guilty while you are trying to be a moral police?
PoliticsRe: Will You Support Any Law Against Polygamy? by adconline(m): 8:01pm On Dec 22, 2009
I don't know how many Chinese your quoted psychologist spoke to before ranking them. As far as I know, I am an African, who married to a Scottish woman for 38 years and have seen all types of match ups in marriage, love is number opium of any successful marraige that will bond every other factors to be considered.

This write up is absurd. So the fact that  you do not know how many Chinese the book surveyed makes their findings incorrect? This is an assault on reason especially coming from  someone  who claims to be a professional.Even though you have refused to provide us with your Ugandan facts, most folks here have not questioned how many people were in involved. Do we need the researchers to talk to everyone in Nigeria or China in order to have  credible results? Do researchers in UK talk to  everyone when carrying out  surveys and polls? Why are u arguing fact with sentiments? You should counter facts with facts not emotions. You are not a standard, so we cannot use you as a benchmark for measuring success. Dr Phil's or Oprah's definition of love will not do it for every1 in the world. Kapish!

But one thing you have failed to tell us to strengthen your argument is, where exactly did you rank love in your own marriage ? However, if you are still not married, where will rank love when the time comes?

This argument has never been about me or you. It's about your stated position that polygamy reduces HIV. So, we cannot use you as a standard. Since you are of the opinion that “love” is everything, how  could you reconcile the   fact  that divorce rate in most western societies  is 50%? Why hasn't love conquered  break ups in unions? Remember you are of the opinion that some Northerners don't know anything about love

^^ Who said anything about the Church of England?? We are quoting from the undiluted word of God. You either take it or leave it.
What the bible says about polygamy is thus:
Deuteronomy 17:17
Neither shall he multiply wives unto himself that his heart turn not away

Maybe Church of England was reading from Koran when they approved slavery and banned polygamy. For your information it was the official church of the British government that brought Christianity and colonisation to Nigeria. It was an apparatus of the government that disseminated Christian teachings in Nigeria. They introduced  "Bible to Nigerians.
So without the early Europeans,  would you have known the Bible?

There is nothing eurocentric or afrocentric about love. It is a universal human feeling and emotion. Practically it is based on doing unto others as you would wish to  be done unto yourself.

This your one side fits all approach  is not the way to go. The way Africans rank " love" is not the way westerners do.  In a psychology book  by Rod Plotnik and Haig Kouyoumdjian, Nigerians ranked "love"  as the 4th most important thing in choosing a life partner,  Chinese ranked "love" 5th, while Americans ranked love  first  as the most important factor in choosing a life partner. Hope this has answered your question.

Would any polygamist for instance agree to share his wife with another man? No. So by 'marrying' another 'wife' he is already going against the commandments of God that a man should love his wife. It is that simple.

How about those who do not worship your type of God? You have refused to see that marriage to you may not have the same meaning when a polygamist is involved. Your view is western ascribed value of marriage and not everyone subscribes to that. Folks who are in polygamy have also established rules, so U don't go out  to bring foreign bodies into the union.  How was polygamy as sin according Church of England and slavery was not?Did u know that Church of England owned slaves and plantations in Caribbean and at the same  time banned polygamy?
How could Church of England not take  a stand on homosexual unions and but has taken a stand on polygamy?

I wonder, how many of them married for love, because you can't really have a romantic love for more than one person at the same time, in my opinion

U got to be kidding me. How could yar'dua's daughter marry a guy becuase of power? Yar'dua is more powerful than the governor and this lady could have married any man she wanted. I think you have got a warped eurocentric view of love that is always prounced by parties in order to get to their immediate needs.

PoliticsRe: Will You Support Any Law Against Polygamy? by adconline(m): 2:19pm On Dec 19, 2009
Lets be clear. A Polygamous man by the very fact that he chooses to marry more than one wife has already sent out the signal that he is sexually promiscuous.
It's either you are  isolated from the real world or dont u want acknowledge that polygamy/polyandr cannot be substituted with promiscuity. Tiger Wood is not a polygamist but was promiscous. Do yourself a favour, use dictionary to find the meanings of polygamy and promiscuity.

So it makes little sense for some posters here to try and distinguish between sexual promiscuity and polygamy. Polygamy is a direct consequence of it.
Furthermore there is no evidence that such a polygamous man changes his behaviour because he has a specified number of 'wives'

Polyandry is still practiced in some parts of Asia. One woman and many husbands. U are the one who is confusing things.Even junior high schoolers know the difference between promiscuity and polygamy. There is no corelation. You are still arguing from emotional stand point instead of factual stand point. Is polygamy a direct consequence of promiscuity in the west even though such practices are outlawed? How do you explain the fact marriages in the west break down  because of sexual infidelity,  even though they are "monogamists"

The point of a law against polygamy is that for the first time in Subsaharan Africa there would be a painful consequence for the unrepentant womanizer. Right now it is open season for such a man which explains the spread of AIDS.

\\In Saudi Arabia how would the law work against polygamy since it is allowed by their faith?

It is not about building long bridges, but it is about reducing pollution and saving the climate. China beware

Versus providing a better future for its citizenry. Is it possible that  not embarking on this project  could save the planet? Its like a western liberal  telling my mum who lives in a village that not constructing a dam for electricity  in a  nearby river would save her environment. I remembered  a so called environmentalist on BBC kicking against the introduction of $2500 cars by TATA without taking into account that she got to her job by car, train, plane. In California, Schwaznegger has pushed for many green policies, but still drives Hummers, Porches, Escalades. It seems to me that those who have crossed the bridge are praying for the bridge to collapse because they are afraid that their new found territory would be over crowded
PoliticsRe: Will You Support Any Law Against Polygamy? by adconline(m): 12:54pm On Dec 19, 2009
To your first question the answer is that there in Washington DC as well as San Francisco,  the spread of AIDS is perpetuated by those who choose to carry out acts of faggotry and engage in intravenous drug use.

OP blindly insists that there is a connection between polygamy and high HIV cases whereas in DC  there are more cases of HIV/AIDS even without polygamy. This is pure JUNK science or BS. How would  polygamy be responsible for HIV if parties involved keep to themselves? This statement would be true if there are facts to show that folks who are involved in polygamy are more likely to be promiscuous. Which is not the case.  Polygamy is not  the same thing as promiscuity. Science literature that is peer reviewed would state that promiscuous acts like that of Spitzer, Tiger Wood, Clinton,Mark Stanford etal would increase the risk of contacting HIV but not polygamy.  How about Warren Buffet's open marriage? Is he not a polygamist?
Polygamy laws are part of English Common Laws. English  Common Laws were delivered from Canon Law and  Canon Laws govern churches till today. How could you reconcile the fact that polygamy was a crime, but slavery was not? Church of England owned plantations in Caribbean and used slave labour and at the same time was against polygamy? Now, the same Church of England is not taking a stand on gay marriage, but has taken a stand on polygamy.
So how can you legislate against  this practice in a country like Naija where  there are Christians, Muslims, Animists, and Traditionalists etc?

That is exactly what happened in Uganda, where it is custom and common in most rural areas for every man to have at least three wives. And there is a community, I visited with some British colleagues in 2001 in a fact finding mission for UNESCO, what remained in so many villages are thousands of little children left with their very aged grandparents, because their parents are all dead from HIV. In some cases, the kids are looking after themselves because they are the only ones left. And almost 40 percent of the kid are already infected from birth.

Could you explain why Washington DC where polygamy is outlawed has more HIV/AID cases than West Africa where polygamy is still practised? Could also tell me why former Gov. of New York, Eliot Spitzer would have sex with a prostitute with out a condom? Keep posting junk facts

If you the article of the thread again, you will find out where I am getting my facts from. Even Uganda too have joined, no wonder they have recorded the lowest number of infection for the past 10 years in East African. HIV nearly wiped Uganda out by the turn of the late 80s.  I think best on the little I see among just Nigerian immigrants in the U.K alone, Nigerian HIV infection rate scenario is a dynamite waiting to explode

i don't know where u got these junk facts. So Washington DC that has a higher prevalence rate than West Africa is because of polygamy? Look we dealt with this issue before on this forum. Polygamy is part of English Common Law which is a derivative of Canon Law. It was premised on the fact that it was  contrary to Christian tenets. A ruling on this case in England remarked that "English Law was adapted to Christian marriage and therefore wholly inapplicable to polygamy"

It's a good thing in western society, but I dont think it would work in Saudi Arabia. There is also polyandry-one woman with multiple husbands
