At this point I think an online conference would be better considering what is involved in organizing a real event.

However, if after all these weeks the website is not even up then my optimism may be far fetched.

We can start with an online conference, make our mistakes there, learn from them and progress to a better conference "offline".

I see where you are coming from, but it is really true that military officers stick together for their own. As human beings though there could be exceptions to this on rare occasions.
That coup was a special case, a dark period in Nigeria's history. Moreover, it was a reaction to an earlier coup staged January 1966 during which eminent Northerners were killed including 1. The prime minister, Tafawa Balewa 2. The premier of the northern region, Sir Ahmadu Bello 3. High ranking military officers from the north and even 4. Premier of western region, Samuel Akintola e.t.c. And you know the civil war followed shortly after. In short this topic is too sensitive, especially here so I prefer not to discuss it
How convenient. You excused the actions of the soldiers who killed their own in July 66 but could not excuse the actions of the soldiers who killed their own and some civilians in Jan 66. Why the preferential treatment?

Funny enough, it seems the original topic has been relegated to the background.

Technically, he has not really done ANYTHING.

For NIGERIA as a country, he has done VERY WELL.

That he entered the competition is also VERY GOOD.

Oracle is also trying to sell their products, just like MS, Sybase, MySQL etc.

Above all, well done for putting NIGERIA on the list.

It is better than been on list of SUICIDE BOMBERS.
100% in agreement.

One thing I have noticed here is that those who are ignorant are the first to label others as ignorant people and those that accuse others of having ego problem are those that actually suffer from such.

Maybe, for these people they are relying way too much on the "the best form of defense is attack" saying.

We can live with facts as they help make our lives easier to understand.

I hope that others will read and learn from what is happening now as being in the spotlight or making money while dining with those that make Nigeria bad don't mean you will be respected.

Put differently, Nigerians know those that speak for them especially the poor and the oppressed.

Hope we learn a thing or two from these comments. Nigerians cannot be deceived!!!

Once again,Nigerians as usual with their ego bashing comments on an appluadable feet by one of  their own. Ok, I know that poster may have over streched the topic with the use of the words "Breaks IT Record". But we all know that the Kehinde Adeyemi guy set a record being the only African on the top winners list.

When we talk business or enterprise application development ,I guess most of us IT guys know that Oracle DB is the standard, when it comes to Back End. So i guess the thread and its achievement is still on point.

My own little 2 cents  undecided
I guess you need to be more specific in your comments.

Don't you see the double speak in your post? You agree that the "Breaks IT record" was not necessary just as others may have alluded and yet you talk about ego.

I maintain that this is a good development and should be celebrated while pointing out the nature of the competition which is based on a particular vendor's product.

You must learn to live with facts of life whether you like it or not. That is how life is.
PoliticsRe: Nigerians, Are You Dead? by Afam(m): 9:03am On Jan 04, 2010
Every nation gets the type of leaders it deserves.

Personally, I don't get to bother about the mess in Nigeria anymore because we are too selfish, too self centered and too ignorant of the issues to attempt to resolve some of these problems.

We do nothing but talk. We offer and take bribes yet we turn around to talk about corruption.
WebmastersRe: Nigeria's First Web Conference Hold January 2010: And It Depends On You! by Afam(m): 8:58am On Jan 04, 2010
What is the problem with the website that was promised for some time now?

If web developers cannot setup a website for this then what do we want to talk about in the conference? One of the major problems in the industry is the disconnect between promises and delivery.

There are companies who paid for website development and waited for months for projects that were quoted for days or weeks before seeing anything.

We have a big problem in this area in my opinion.
PoliticsRe: Kosovo Must Go! by Afam(m): 8:50am On Jan 04, 2010
Being a moderator does not mean that you will not have your own opinions on issues.

So, in this regard kosovo has done nothing wrong at all.

One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. However, my problem with some terrorist activities is the idea of killing innocent people in the process. If they can target those that are directly responsible for the pains and killings going on in their countries then in my opinion there is nothing wrong with that as we cannot continue to pretend that might is right.

Today, innocent defenseless Palestinians are being killed by Israeli military just as innocent Iraqis die on daily basis due to the illegal invasion of that country based on lies by the US led military. For starters until Saddam was removed/Iraq invaded we never heard of suicide bombing in Iraq in spite of the ethnic/sectarian problems in that country which Saddam was able to put under control.

So, anyone can support anything as long as the person has enough reasons to do so.

No price is too high to pay for the equal rights and justice of all Nigerians.  You can't keep cheating other ethnicities by denying them their rights based on falsified census figures.

I was actually talking about a sovereign national conference, where the ethnic groups have equal representation. How does population or majority or minority come into such an arrangement?

You can not have a discussion about the future of this country without including all stakeholders (ethnic groups). Internal colonialism, adminstrative convenience and sarcasm will not change that.
It seems you conveniently avoided my questions and instead raised others.

Back to the issue you raised about equal representation here is my question - What makes you think that we have 250 ethnic nationalities? Have we taken time to list all of them or are some ethnic nationalities preventing others from being heard or listed?

What if we have about 3000 distinct ethnic nationalities? How can we (in practical terms) convene a SNC with 3000 ethnic nationalities comeing with their representatives?

Maybe we will also end up with 3000 states in Nigeria and about 9000 senators.

Please stop acting like Mekusxxx and WILYWILY. If you have to say something about other tribes, please stick to facts rather than perceived opinions.
I really don't understand you my friend, you seem to be taking sides regardless of the facts on ground and that is unfortunate.

Someone accused the Igbos of not voting for a Yoruba candidate even when there was an Igbo vice presidential candidate in the same election and Mekusxxx brought evidence to dispel such lie. The accuser refused to address the exposed lie and all you can say is for them to stop acting like others and still encourage them to stick to facts.

It seems you prefer facts when they suits you and discard them when they don't. Can we be more consistent here in what we believe and preach?

This is a good development and should be celebrated.

However, this is limited to one out of some many database technologies out there. There are people (like me) that don't use oracle database and probably never will so it is important we understand the specifics as regards the organizer and the organizer's product (oracle) just like Microsoft organizing a competition based on its own technology or Adobe doing another based on its software.

PoliticsRe: Nigerians Don't Need Crude Oil by Afam(m): 2:53am On Jan 03, 2010
SapeleGuy:
Afam - Respectfully, I disagree. It can't be based on numbers because that reverts to an exam score of 3 over 250. Failed state. We have had 49 years of your number politics it hasn't worked.

At the table of the sovereign national conference every ethnicity must have equal standing with no regard for population or federal character.
Well, you have every right to disagree but your disagreement does not have any basis in reality. Anywhere that democracy is practiced there is nothing anyone can do about populations or numbers where those that are in majority will have their ways while those that are in minority will have their say.

3 over 250? Ok, maybe we need about 250 states with each state having 3 senators and of course the house of reps etc.

Are you really sure that we have only 250 ethnic nationalities? Are you sure you have not dismissed the rights or claims of some people to identify them as distinct ethnic group?

If there is any good reason to support your position I guess you should be the one making it clear as the onus is on you to explain that.

In my opinion, you are mistaking majority/minority in terms of population to mean majority/minority in terms of self worth where ethnic groups in the majority see themselves as superior while those in the minority see themselves as inferior which is not proper or correct.
PoliticsRe: Nigerians Don't Need Crude Oil by Afam(m): 7:58pm On Jan 02, 2010
SapeleGuy:
The argument for diversification is a positive one. However, I don't think it makes sense to blame the underdevelopment of Nigeria on Crude Oil.

Why is it so difficult for some of you to relinquish your colonial status and accept the equality of all ethnic groups?
All the ethnic groups cannot be equal based on numbers as you must have some that are in the majority and others in the minority and nothing brings out this fact more than democracy - a game of numbers.

However, every Nigerian must be treated as a Nigerian and respected regardless of ethnic group. It is important to state that the issue of majority or minority has everything to do with the populations of the different ethnic groups and should not be seen as any form of reference to inferiority whatsoever.

You insult my people and tell me not to take your comments to heart?

Do you really understand the meaning of Biafra? Biafra is not an Igbo project. The name was not even suggested for the new republic by an Igbo person. Check your history and argue based on facts.

Once you discuss Biafra then you are referencing the old eastern region.

Talk about the Igbos then focus on the core Igbo states plus Igbos found in Rivers and Delta states. The present president of Ohaneze Ndigbo is from Delta state, that should give you an idea of what I am talking about.

And do not disparage a people based on your disagreements with a few people it is wrong.

PoliticsRe: Nigerians Don't Need Crude Oil by Afam(m): 7:34pm On Jan 02, 2010
Hmm, but for the ongoing exchanges between Dede1 and Emperorolu I would have used very harsh words on Emperorolu for some very careless statements that were borne out of ignorance in my opinion.

As Dede1 clearly stated anyone that talks about Biafra without any part of the then Eastern region does not know anything about Biafra.

Now, as regards the Igbos wanting a separate nation (if it comes to that) the Igbo states alone (without Igbos in Rivers and Delta states) can survive and indeed do very well from crude oil (Imo, Abia with Anambra sitting on what they have termed strategic reserve due to politics) to commerce and other spheres of life.

The Igbos do not hinge their survival on any non Igbo states. Get this simple fact straight and stop the over generalization based on half truths. It is insulting.

And please, while we advocate for discussions free from insults do not mistake that to mean that you can make false allegations against a people and then you wait for those who disagree to take your points one after the other to trash them.

Do your research and more importantly base your comments on facts.

overall it looks good to me.
Thanks. Actually, I had to fight the urge to use more green color than necessary so as not to make the site look like a typical "proudly Nigerian" website with green all over the place.

Once I figure a way to add green without the possible green color abuse I will surely do as especially as the color has a lot to do with energy conservation, efficiency and renewal energy issues.

Many thanks for your time.

Fashola is doing well and I doubt if such allegations (from irrelevant to ridiculous) would change the perception and appreciation people have for him.

No one is perfect and I am sure Fashola never claimed he was. When serious issues come then people will take notice.

So, it is now a crime for governors to continue with or complete projects started by predecessors? This is far better than the typical practice of abandoning on-going projects in favor of new ones while wasting money in the process.

PoliticsRe: Nairaland Quoted In Toronto Star, Canada ---congrat Seun & Nairalanders by Afam(m): 2:54am On Jan 02, 2010
There is a world of difference between a forum, a news service and a source of news.

Maybe the average okada rider may be quoted as a news service too since people get to know about certain news from them.

Major news service websites have discussion forums as well, what then do we call the forum within the news service website? News service within a news service?

A forum remains a forum where unlimited number of people can start or post comments. A news service does not allow for unlimited number of people to start or post news items especially when they are similar or just content and links to other websites.

PoliticsRe: Nairaland Quoted In Toronto Star, Canada ---congrat Seun & Nairalanders by Afam(m): 6:36pm On Jan 01, 2010
You don't get to see multiple posts (sometimes up to 10) of the same topic in a news service website.

You only get to see such in a public forum where posters may be using multiple usernames.

This argument should not even be taking place at all.

A forum is a forum. CNN and other news sites being referenced don't run on open source forum scripts. CMS will be more like it.

@ndu chuks , who is to be the judge of whether Nairaland is a news service or not ? The stories on I-Report on CNN are considered news aren't they ?
This is 2010 and distinction between one form of media is fast eroding if you don't know ? Is the daily independent a newspaper or a website ? Is the VOA a broad
caster or a web based medium ? Is google just a search engine ? All of these media organisations, over time, have evolved from one thing to the other and the lines are fast eroding.
Now ,what do you use Naira land for ? Do you come here just to chat with Nigerians from various fields and nothing more ? Then i guess it wolf qualify as a forum for you.

Then what about those who come here to find threads that are linked with headlines of interest to them ? Surely Naira land would not qualify only as forum to such people. To people like, of which i am one, Naira land points to issues of interests and provides links to renowned media organisation where the feeds were gotten. If that is not providing news i don't know what is.
On this issue nairaland.com is a public forum and not a new service. And I don't think there is anyway anyone can make the two mean the same thing.

I am happy with the success of the forum but it must take a bold step to improve the quality of discussions if more serious or mature people must get involved in discussions. There are people that will visit and say goodbye to the forum by opening just 1 or 2 threads laden with unwarranted insults, ethnic bigotry and childish comments.
