As harsh as many of the questions may be they remain very valid. If the original poster cannot defend what he claimed he built then his claim cannot be taken serious. It is possible for him to build a bike but the picture and quality of information he provided thus far don't match. In this case however, the "bike builder" has made it easy for anyone not to believe him so he has himself to blame (assuming he built anything anyway). We cannot allow belief in Nigeria or patriotism confuse us and allow people who make unsubstantiated claims to have a field day. Questions must be asked (and should be answered) and clarifications sought. |
From mailbox. ++++++++++++ +++++++++ +++++++++ +++++++++ + ------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- -- Can Mitchell turn Jerusalem into Belfast? - Ali Abunimah US President Barack Obama's appointment of former Senator George Mitchell as his new Middle East envoy is a good choice. Mitchell showed even-handedness uncharacteristic of US officials when he led a fact-finding mission to the region in 2000. Had its recommendations been followed -- cessation of all violence and a full freeze of Israeli settlement construction on occupied Palestinian land -- the peace process might have made progress. Mitchell, who is already in the Middle East, helped broker the 1998 Belfast Agreement, the key to ending decades of strife in Northern Ireland. Because of historical similarities, that peace agreement is an important precedent for Palestinians and Israeli Jews. Before 1948, European Jewish settlers, newly-arrived in Palestine, wanted their own state once British colonial rulers withdrew. But because Jews were a minority, the only way to achieve this was a partition that the majority Arab Palestinian population, fearing dispossession, bitterly opposed. When Israel was established in 1948, most Palestinians were forced from their homeland, and those remaining became second-class citizens in a "Jewish state." The modern conflict in Ireland began when Great Britain, facing resistance from Irish nationalists, decided to withdraw after centuries of rule. But the Protestant ruling class -- a quarter of the population -- descended from English and Scottish settlers, insisted that Ireland remain tied to Britain. These unionists refused to live in a state with a nationalist Catholic majority. To appease the unionist minority, which threatened violent rebellion if it did not get its way, Britain partitioned Ireland in 1921, creating Northern Ireland, an entity whose legitimacy nationalists refused to recognize. As Israeli Jews did to Palestinians, Protestants institutionalized their own culture and religion as the official creed and violently suppressed expressions of nationalist identity. In the words of its first prime minister, Northern Ireland's seat of government at Belfast's Stormont Castle was a "Protestant parliament for a Protestant people." Catholics faced systematic discrimination in jobs and housing. Nationalists launched a civil rights movement in the 1960s inspired by the one in the US. Protestant unionists violently resisted demands to share power and reform, but the numerical growth and assertiveness of the nationalist Catholic population within Northern Ireland made such intransigence untenable. In 1972, Britain sent in troops and imposed direct rule. During 30 years of "The Troubles," 3,700 people died at the hands of the Irish Republican Army (IRA), Protestant militias, British forces and others. The Mitchell-led Belfast Agreement ended formal Protestant hegemony in favor of equality, mitigating partition's injustices. It promised that government power "shall be exercised with rigorous impartiality on behalf of all the people" and guaranteed "just and equal treatment for the identity, ethos, and aspirations of both communities. " Decades of bloody conflict left deep social divisions. But a framework for nondiscriminatory democratic governance has allowed nationalists and unionists within Northern Ireland to begin to shed their siege mentalities. While formal partition of Ireland remains, it is disappearing on the ground as anyone can live, work and move freely, and official cross-border bodies are integrating the infrastructure and economies of the two jurisdictions on the island of Ireland. The power-sharing executive in Belfast, led by staunchly nationalist Sinn Fein (closely affiliated with the IRA) and the hardline Democratic Unionist Party, was once as inconceivable as a government made up of members of Hamas and Israeli politicians would be today. US diplomacy played a key role by putting pressure on the stronger parties -- the British government and Protestant unionists -- in favor of the weaker nationalist side. Instead of shunning Sinn Fein the US, prodded by the Irish American lobby, insisted it be brought into the process. By 2010, Palestinians will outnumber Israeli Jews in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza Strip combined. The two groups can no more be totally separated than Protestant unionists and Catholic nationalists in Ireland. Like Irish nationalists, Palestinians will never recognize the "right" of another group to discriminate against them. Like Protestant unionists did, Israeli Jews insist on their own state. Israel's "solution" is to cage Palestinians into ghettos -- like Gaza -- and periodically bomb them into submission just so Israeli Jews, their relative numbers dwindling, can artificially maintain a Jewish state. If Mitchell is allowed to apply Northern Ireland's lessons, then there may be a way out. But he goes to Jerusalem with few of the advantages he brought to Belfast. The Obama administration remains committed for now to the failed partition formula of "a Jewish state" and a "Palestinian state" and maintains the Bush administration' s misguided boycott of Hamas, which overwhelmingly won Palestinian elections in 2006. And the Israel lobby -- much more powerful than its Irish American counterpart -- warps US policy to favor the stronger side, an intransigent Israel committing war crimes. If these policies don't change, Mitchell's efforts will be wasted and escalating violence will fill the political vacuum. ------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- -- Co-founder of The Electronic Intifada, Ali Abunimah is author of One Country: A Bold Proposal to End the Israeli-Palestinian Impasse An abridged version of this article first appeared in The Detroit Free Press. ++++++++++++ +++++++++ +++++++++ +++++++ |
candylips:The first statement addressed the issues I raised. I don't know where the second is coming from neither do I know where it is going to. |
It is rather sad that many of us have assumed that the police woman was trying to collect bribe from the driver of the car. What if the car failed to stop when it was stopped for other vehicles to pass? Quite a number of drivers forget themselves while driving, it is common to see people driving through red lights at traffic light junctions. And when they are stopped they begin to beg. It is possible that the police woman did nothing wrong. It is even more unfortunate that the driver was able to get away with this act. |
candylips:PHP is the world's most popular web programming language. MySQL is the world's most popular web based database application. PHP/MySQL combination is the world's most popular platform for web based applications. Very popular applications like Facebook, Yahoo are based on these technologies and they are very busy websites. If you know of better technologies why don't you state them or point the poster to them? Talking about researching other technologies (that are unpopular on the web when compared to PHP/MySQL) is not only vague but can only be promoted by people who are not sure of the technologies they are even asking someone to research. Let us know these technologies some of us want the poster to research more on. |
otoidea:Without NSE offering feeds no programmer can consume the feeds and what you want done cannot be done unless you want to copy static content every time it changes and paste same to the website that needs the information. |
Kobojunkie:Why don't you advice the poster on the more reliable technologies instead of asking him to research more? You must not advice people if you have nothing concrete to offer. Stop discouraging or misleading people with vague advice especially when you don't have any reasonable thing to contribute. |
Live feeds from NSE? Do they offer feeds? |
davidylan:At least we are making progress here. Egypt has banned all major opposition parties. The president has been in power for over 20 years. Very unpopular government but has the support of the US. Saudi Arabia is ruled by a family, does not practice democracy and the ruling family has the support of the US even though the US claims to be exporting democracy to the rest of the world. So, considering the above, is it surprising that these 2 countries would oppose HAMAS? HAMAS won a landslide election in Palestine, defeating the Western backed and very corrupt Abass led government in a free and fair election. Let the hypocrisy continue, at least our friend here is running out of ideas and shamelessly clinging to all forms of nonsense just to justify his lousy positions on issues concerning Islam, Israel, US, Arabs etc. |

Kobojunkie:PHP/MySQL can handle any web project. The combination remains the most widely used development tools for web development in the whole world and comes with very reliable support. mr.uwaifo:If you are the person handling the project then you should know what to charge. Companies don't pay you because they like your face, they pay you because you are able to solve a problem they have with your solution and based on your skill set, experience, work rate and quality of work I believe you should charge what you are comfortable with. If you want just N20,000.00 to handle the project, fine. If N3,000,000.00 makes sense to you, cool/ |
MIGS:I agree with the content in bold but why visit your premises? At least you should be able to use PHP and MySQL to develop your own company's website to show people that in reality it works. |
candylips:Don't think? Well, your thoughts are certainly not right because it doesn't take anything to turn data into web services that can be consumed by third parties. |
dhtml:You sounded as though you were supporting the guy that reproduced an article from the web without making any reference to it. That is what I am against and that was the essence of my post. Take care. |
dhtml:If you are reproducing somebody's work then state it. You don't have any right to claim ownership of some else's work (by not referencing the source or giving credit to the content owner). |
dhtml:I disagree with the content in bold completely. Things are shaping up real fast as more and more companies are turning to functional web applications. I have had discussions with individuals and companies that demand web applications that are meant to solve real business problems. As for the post proper I didn't go past the first few lines to realize that the poster wasn't the original writer, he just copied the piece from the web and posted same here. You can see a more comprehensive piece at http://www.sitepoint.com/article/build-online-community-drupal/ |
sleek_p:I will not argue with you on this because that is just the fact with davidylan. |
Why not look for some history books or better still ask people that are far older than you to know? ![]() If people will have to tell you everything you want to know then in 90 years we will still be here telling stuff. ![]() |
More than 13 months ago I wrote an article titled "The President's position on alternative energy - not in our own best interest" when it was reported that developed nations were conspiring to seek for alternatives to crude oil as the main energy source. It is funny that some people in the government are just waking up to this reality. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The president's position on alternative energy - not in our own best interest 26th, Dec 2007 - 08:47:45 At a recent meeting of OPEC member states it was reported that Nigeria's President Umaru Musa Yar'adua stated that the developed nations may be conspiring to push for alternative sources of energy and as such would negatively affect the economy of oil producing and exporting states since they are the ones benefiting from the high oil prices right now. While I agree that crude oil will remain a major source of energy for quite some time it will be dangerous for anyone to assume that alternatives cannot replace crude oil supply because those who do not want to adjust, prepare or acknowledge change may be consumed by the change itself. Energy and power drive the economy of so many nations especially the developed nations. Non oil producers and unfortunately some oil producing and even oil exporting nations like Nigeria must buy crude oil at the international prices which is at least $100.00 per barrel. Power plants especially gas fired ones, factories, industries, automobiles all require one form of fuel or the other to run and for now the bulk of the energy requirement is met by crude oil. But things are changing, albeit slowly but surely. Distributed systems are becoming common place in some parts of the world today, individuals can generate their own electricity by using solar panels or wind turbines. As more and more people generate their own power the revenue of power generation companies will reduce and the need to generate energy that may not be purchased will reduce as well. In other words, distributed energy generation systems are enough to case a major change in the way people demand energy from power generating companies which have a direct bearing on the cost of crude oil vis a vis the economy of nations that depend on crude oil revenue to survive. Do not forget the fact that if individuals can generate their own electricity, companies with more financial base can as well. Automobiles are yet another major consumer of oil whether in the form of fuel (PMS) or diesel. Even though the use alternative source of fuel for automobile is not common here in Nigeria we must realize that in some countries today bio ethanol is already being used by individuals and government programs like mass transit systems like what Brasil is doing today. Hybrid cars are already on the roads today and many automobile makers are thinking in the direction of manufacturing cars that would utilize alternative sources of energy. If I generate electricity using solar panels or wind turbine and my car runs on bio ethanol (used vegetable oil plus methanol and caustic soda are enough to produce cheap fuel for diesel engines) then I may as well not give a damn what PHCN charges per kilowatt of electricity consumed or what the price of fuel or diesel is at the petrol station. If gradually people embrace these alternative sources of energy what becomes of our crude oil that we depend on for our survival? What will happen when the demand for crude oil reduces? Many argue that the demand will always increase due to population increase and industrialization though. Unfortunately, those that are seriously seeking alternative sources of energy are the same people that will spend time and money on research, they will do all they can to find alternatives that make economic sense. Put differently, we are not in any position to decide whether they will depend on us or not, we simply have to hope and pray they do or we begin now to weigh our options because the change or shift in the current energy regime may come sooner than expected or anticipated. Considering the abundant quantity of renewable energy sources like wind and sun in this part of the world it is still surprising that we are not at the forefront of research into these viable alternative sources of energy even if only to guarantee steady power supply to Nigerians. By the way, why are we making so much money from crude oil today and yet the majority of Nigerians are living in poverty? It seems we have a way of rubbishing all known economic theories and postulations. If Nigerians cannot benefit from the current high price of crude oil today, is it when the price crashes or when the world must have found alternatives that we will benefit? The only constant thing in life is change and we must either prepare for it or be consumed by it. In the past the media was controlled by governments, information used to be properly vetted and filtered by governments, today just about anyone can set up an information system by owning a website or a blog and immediately begin to publish information thanks to the power of the internet. Today, governments are even forced to react to issues raised by individuals who publish information that would never have seen the light of the day in the past. If the people in Nitel were told some 10 years ago that one day mobile phones will be in the hands of practically every Nigerian and that people would be able to communicate without running wires from their homes or offices to telephone boxes or poles across the streets I am sure they would have laughed off the idea, today we know better. Though patriotism may make one dismiss anything that appears not to be in our own interest we must remember that there is a thin line separating reality and perception of reality. It is very possible to replace crude oil as a major source of energy, the earlier we believed this the better for us. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ http://afamnnaji.com/blog_view.php?myview_id=49 |

Sympathy for Bush? He should be arrested and tried for war crimes. That is the fair thing to do. |
Did Israel succeed in taking out Hamas as promised and boasted by Israel? Emphatic NO! So, if you set out a target and fail to accomplish it would it be ok to state that you failed? Clearly YES. In view of the above and with these few statements of mine I hope I have been able to convince all reasonable, truthful, honest and courageous lovers of peace and justice that in spite of the many innocent lives killed by Israel it failed in the over 3 weeks war waged against a resistance. TINAOGE:In fact, do not invest your money in anything you do not understand. |
The atrocities of Israel and the US are grave and unfortunate. |
Thanks. |
pintogen:Thanks for your response. Now, you will understand why I asked the questions I asked in the first place. Did you use Macromedia tools (Adobe more like it) to develop those sites or what? From what I can see 2 out of the 3 sites you posted are based on the free open source Joomla CMS. Thanks for your time. |
See me see trouble? You want me to enroll and pay you to train me before you can show what you have done in the past. You must be on drugs if you believe I will do so. Displaying sample websites designed by you of course would help, it is a proper thing to do and an easier way to see if you are genuine or not. Anyone can claim to train people on what he/she does not even know anything about so the concerns raised on this issue are valid and in order. Is Pintogen the company behind this training or is Pintogen the name of the person or just a username? In fact, can you prove that this is not scam? It is your duty to prove otherwise. If I want to be trained by someone I must be certain that the trainer knows what he/she is doing, simple. |
The media is another corrupt industry. Publishes or kills stories based on the amount of money coming in and the source of the money. Not surprised at all. |
Jairzinho:So, even against the position of the UN and many nations (non Arab nations) Israel continued to slaughter innocent men, women and children and when they are ok with the monumental wastage of lives it is decided to declare a ceasefire and you are interested whether Hamas will agree to a unilateral ceasefire declared by Israel at its own timing? Get real. |
Anyone that claims that OBJ did not do anything good in Nigeria is either a liar, living outside Nigeria or living in denial. This is a non issue as facts support the position that he did a number of good things his mistakes notwithstanding. |
