I really liked the guy. RIP. |
shymexx: Both are the same when it comes to institutionalised racism. However, America is more openly racist in everyday life. Only in America would some white nutter tie a black person to a car and drag him around, yet the nutter won't get charged for murder till Al Sharpton starts complaining. That would never happen in the UK. Didn't a naija girl's neck got slashed in America a few week ago? You're getting it all mixed up. Granted that America seems more crime prone than the UK and that's why you would see a lot of these scenarios that you have painted but it's not always about race. Was the Nigerian girl whose throat was slashed killed because she was Black? I doubt that very much as she was killed by her housemate that she has lived with for quite some time. |
shymexx: Also, Afam, stop comparing 1.8 million black people in the UK with about 50 million black people in America. Come on now, black brits have overachieved in comparison to other black folks, to be honest.I'm not necessarily comparing them to their mates in America. Rather i'm comparing them the openness of the British society to absorb these people in all spheres no matter how little their population may be. |
shymexx: They made their name in America because hollywood is the mecca of movies. However, they're still Brits. Just as the UK/Europe is the mecca of football and you have to play there to be considered 'bigtime'. Or should I include Wimbledon and the legend of Pete Sampras?I'm not arguing about their nationality. I'm wondering how they were able to break into the mainstream American movie industry that's supposed to be racist but couldn't do so in the British theater. This has nothing to do with America being the mecca of entertainment. Infact, that should have even made it more difficult for some black blokes from another country becoming stars in Hollywood. Whichever way you try to dice it, America is way more opened than any country on earth. That's why an Arnold Schwarze-whatever despite not being born in America became the governor of America's third largest economy(California). |
GustavoFring: The british movie industry is nowhere as large as Hollywood...But it's large enough to cater for White Britons? Talk another thing. It's surprising because these actors never made big in Britain before going to America. America afforded them the opportunity to achieve their dreams. It's only after they have made it in America that some British Directors started giving them some little roles here and there. Btw, van Vicker never made his name in Nollywood. That's a sick analogy. |
shymexx: We've got Trisha Goddard for Oprah. Idris Elba, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Adewale Agbaje for Denzel.Who the heck is Tricia Goddard? How's she comparable to Oprah? Just because she's a presenter? SMH And pls, like i said, those Actors made their name in America and not in racist Britain. |
tensor77: Old man don't forget that whites in Europe have their own music and comedy shows. Why should they all appreciate hip-hop anyway? And don't the whites in America have their own music and comedy shows? And who's talking about hip hop. Are those Hip Hop movies not mostly made by Blacks themselves? I'm talking of blacks who have made it in mainstream American movies. |
Italiano1: Very funny comparison. You're nnot even ashamed to name these people who made their name in America. If Britain is so good then why are they flocking to America? That shows that America is an open society and welcome colored people even those from outside the country. |
HumbledbYGrace:I'm saying that i'm a foreigner. |
shymexx: If we judge based o population, with blacks making up just 2% of UK's population compared to 13% in America - pound for pound, the UK might be on the same level. Apart from probably Obama. And another thing is that blacks have been in the UK since the 17th century, but most have been assimilated and they now look white. So we might have to do DNA testing to discover the older generations and those who carry the black DNA.I give you Oprah Winfrey who's a media giant aand i give you Denzel Watshington who is a Holywood star. pls, name me one very big Black British movie star in the UK. |
tensor77: Crap post. If England were so racist how come there are so many thriving immigrants from all over the world. If some people come here without papers or their papers expire how can they blame racism for their predicament? Are there more thriving immigrants in the UK than in America? |
tensor77: You are full of hate though. There are still plenty of opportunities for ethnic minorities here regardless of what happens to Umunna. And why should he be PM for that matter? There are other more qualified candidates.Just show me a list of black people who have risen to the highest height of the British society like their colleagues in America. |
cap28: Affirmative action is being dismantled in many states in America because whites are against it and do not want blacks to catch up with them in terms of jobs and education. My fridnd, stop changing goal post. The reason why slavery was abolished is immaterial. The point is that it was abolished and we have to commend the whites for that cos if black people ever found themselves in a situation where they have pre-eminence over others, it will remain like that till Jesus comes. And what's your proof that affirmative action is being abolished? Was it removed from law or what? Pls, stop lying to support your warped idea of white people holding black people down. And whether or not Obama represents black interest is not the point as he's the president of America and not of Black people. The point is that he's black and not just black, he has kenyan heritage and he's the president of the United states of freaking America. He's the most powerufl man in the world and he's black. That shows the tolerant nature of America as a country. |
souldust: there is a Nigerian British man that is believed to become the next prime minister of the UK. Cant remember his name. Are you referring to Chuka Umunna? Let him become the PM first. Until then, as things stand, the UK seems more institutionally biased towards minority groups. I hate the boring BBC though. |
chelseabmw: Cos the damn thread is not available on the home pageThis is the new year. I don't think Nairaland is interested in chelsea threads making the frontpage. We want successful threads in the FP. You chelsea fans have done more harm than good. |
chelseabmw: Go n DieWhen are you changing you moniker to EnyimbaToyota? |
Ms Nas: Loool. He probably hasn't stepped on the shores of America not to talk of setting foot in the south.I was shocked when i saw that post. Those states in the South actually having the highest percentage of blacks in the entire US. |
Is chelsea playing in the spirit? Why are there no spectators here? |
We foreigners have to come together and forge a common front in a Nigerian dominated forum. |
cap28: The likes of Condoleeza Rice, Oprah and Obama were allowed to get to where they are by the white power structure. This was done intentionally in order to pacify the masses of angry black americans who were rising up against the system of white supremacy in the 1960s.Bunkum! Those people are where they are because they worked for it. The American society gave them that opportunity to succeed which they have done and that opportunity is available to a lot of black people via affirmative action but only the sensible ones are making use of it. We can't keep blaming the white people forever. They used their own hand to stop slavery, segregation and have put black people at an advantage due to the injustice done them in the past and common sense suggests that i will take a lot of time before Black people will catch up with the whites and there's progress in that regard else Barrack Obama wouldn't be the president of America. The truth is still remains that black people in America tend to be more successful than their counterparts in the UK and that's because the society affords them that. You can't say that society is racist, can you? |
souldust: what about the so many Nigerians working for the BBC?Lol I'm mentioning Oprah and co and you're mentioning working for BBC as a junior staff. God punish BBC. |
naijacutee: To help us understand the argument better, do you mean that the money is deposited in the bank and shortly after, a bank robbery takes place? If the money has been desposited then it's assumed to be safe. The OP is referring to probably when you're on the line waiting to deposit and then armed robbers attack the bank and not only take the money owned by the bank but the money owned by the customers. @topic I don't think the bank is liable. It's only when the money has been put in the bank's custody that they'll be liable. It's like saying a church is liable if your money is stolen in a church? |
The most tribalisric people in Nigeria are the Nigerians themselves. |
What are the features of a church website? How are they different from others? |
It's also imperative to note that the racism in the UK is more institutional than it is personal. There's an extent to which a black person or a foreigner can progress in the UK. That's why you don't have the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Obama, Condeleza rice etc in the UK. More black people keep getting to the top in the US unlike the UK. |
ROSSIKE: The USA is FAR more racist, and far more crude in their racism. You won't believe I was refused service at a bar at the airport in Orlando, Florida a couple of years ago, simply because of the colour of my skin. It was all very blatant. That could never happen in the UK. The British are far more civilized, intelligent, and cosmopolitan than Americans. This is obviously a fat lie. How can a country that have lived with people of different racial composition be more racist that the ones that just started being cosmopolitan not too long ago? Btw, how are you sure you were refused service at the bar due to the color of your skin? |
Pls, how did he insult the president? |
Is this even a comparison? If the US wasn't a liberal country, you won't have a blackman as president and other black people holding key positions and succeeding like their peers. |
Pukkah: The Afam!I suppose you don't know the difference between playing the devil's advocate and also going ahead to state one's opinion. Everything is not a black and white affair. |
This is a very good reason why i should support Jonathan even more. Tambuwal ko Tampoline ni. I wonder the next step of action of Rochas and Amaechi cos i know these people are ambitious. |
Go to their website and get it or go through a 3rd party like Licensepal. |
If that's Orlu then whoever says Rochas is not working deserves to get themselves checked. I wanmt to see the major towns in Imo state acquire a city status and of international standard. I must commend Rochas for taking it upon himself to do something about Okigwe and Orlu which have been neglected for a long time that a song was even composed for both cities...Obodo nile emepesiala ofo ndi Okigwe na Orlu. That song will become history very soon. |
